Nothing, earlier this month, launched the successor of last year’s Phone (1) – the Nothing Phone (2). The Nothing Phone (2) will be available for purchase for the first time today in the country.

Last year when the first Nothing Phone debuted, it promised something individualistic to a monotonous smartphone landscape.  Many were quick to call Nothing’s design approach gimmicky even though the hype it generated was palpable.

Phone 1 was eventually appreciated for being a solid and reliable Android handset. Now, after exactly a year, Nothing Phone 2 is officially out this week and amidst all the hype it is time to take a closer look.

Nothing as a brand has a vibe that is both glam and futuristic. Phone 2 is a much more refined and higher resolution version of Phone 1 that gives significant upgrades across the board.

During the live-streamed keynote, CEO Carl Pei promises that Phone 2 is going to be thePhone 1 .

“With Phone 2, we deliver top-notch features while encouraging more intentional smartphone usage through hardware and software design innovation. A smartphone is a vital tool in our lives, but it has increasingly become a distracting force, making us less present and less creative,” said Pei during the live stream.

The new smartphone features a revamped Nothing OS 2.0, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform, a powerful 50MP dual rear camera, and a stunning 6.7-inch OLED display with LTPO.

The display comes with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,600 nits of peak brightness. It has a 4,700mAh battery that supports wired and wireless charging.
Phone 2 further incorporated up to 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage.

Phone 2 also features an enhanced Glyph Interface that has more LED segments to allow greater customizability and functionality. The Glyph Interface can now serve as a visual countdown, volume checker, timer, and progress tracker for third-party apps such as Uber or Zomato.

The OS 2.0 is based on Android 13. The brand has reworked the home and lock screen utility with widgets to access key functions without opening the apps.
The Nothing OS 2.0 also feature a new monochrome layout and an option to remove the app label.

Nothing Phone 2 – Design and Build Quality

The Phone 2 presents a much more refined and premium design compared to its predecessor. The flagship version also gets a significant number of upgrades across the board that impresses both on paper and in hand.

Despite being slightly thicker on paper, the Phone 2 cleverly utilizes design elements that give it a perceived thinner profile when held in hand.

With a thickness of 8.5mm, the Phone 2 surpasses Phone 1’s 8.3mm measurement but achieves a visual effect through thoughtful design choices that make it appear thinner.
Contributing to the Phone 2’s perceived thinness is the reduction of the aluminium mid-frame on the sides.

By reducing it by 1mm, Nothing has managed to create an illusion of slenderness, resulting in a sleek and elegant feel when holding the device.

Nothing Phone 2 – The Glyph Interface

Undoubtedly the most hyped aspect of the Nothng phone is the Glyph Interface since the first time it was introduced before the launch of Phone 1. This time, with Phone 2, we are getting a better design and a more capable Glyph interface.

The enhanced Glyph Interface has more LED segments to allow greater customizability and functionality. The Glyph Interface can now serve as a visual countdown and progress tracker for ride or delivery services.

It also offers additional functionalities such as a volume checker, and timer. When receiving a notification from selected contacts or apps, the top-right LED segment will remain on until it has been addressed.

The Glyph interface in Phone 2 has been redesigned. The new interface now has an extra number of LED segments compared to Phone 1.

The upgrades in design give it the ability to assign personalized light and sound sequences to contacts and apps. When receiving a notification from them, the top-right LED segment will remain on until addressed.

Nothing Phone 2 – Camera Hardware

The Nothing Phone 2 will have a 50-megapixel dual camera setup on the rear. The primary lens has been upgraded to IMX890 from the previous IMX766 used in Phone 1.

The Ultra-Wide lens, on the other hand, is Samsung ISOCELL GN1. On the front, you get a 32-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calls.
The front camera too has been upgraded to an IMX615, which is a 30 per cent larger sensor and can capture more light and field.

With Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip enabling camera processing, the Phone 2 gets an 18-bit ISP that captures over 4,000 times the camera data than the Phone 1’s 14-bit predecessor.

The phone is bringing an advanced HDR to address the over-exposure of images when in direct sunlight. The advanced HDR breaks the image into 8 frames of different exposure and then stitches them back together to get the best results.

There is a significant upgrade here from the 3-frame break out that the usual Phone 1 HDR was capable of.

The Nothing Phone 2 seems to have also addressed the issues most camera face in capturing moving subjects. The brand is introducing Motion Capture 2.0 which intelligently detects moving objects to ensure distorting-free and noise-free final images.

It supports 4K recording at 60fps on the main rear camera. The main lens also has EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) and OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). The front camera records at 1080p at 60fps.

Pros

Presentation:- From the get go, the phone give you a premium feel by the unique and well designed packaging that the phone comes in.
Apart from the actual phone inside you do also get a cable and sim ejector tool which stay true to its transparent/ look through apperance.
Build:- The phone has a very premium to look at design and finish to it, it looks distinct and something that nobody else has to offer, mainly being the transparent back design and glyph interface which makes up its brand identity.

Holding and using the phone feels very solid too with the flat edge to edge display, metal rails and the ever so slightly curved back panel which makes it look good and feel more comfortable than the phone (1).
Although the phone does seem a little less dense that it seems when you do pick it up.

Diplay:- Probably the part i enjoyed most while testing the device was it’s display. The flat amoled panel looks great with it’s symmetrical bezels and the tiny punch hole in the centre which is easy to forget about.

The display has vivid but realistic colour representation, the viewing angles are great with little to no colour shifting issues, it’s nice and snappy with the variable 120hz refresh rate, and it gets nice and bright with its 1600 nit brightness put in the sun.

For what it is, there doesn’t seem to be much I’d want more from a display in this class. I would like to see even slimmer bezels all around the next time though.

Haptics:- The phone seems to have an x-axis haptic motor which does a great job at feeling tight and fast in its response.

I also loved the integration of these Haptics in many areas especially the glyph paired ones which work very well with the lighting patterns at the back.
The only thing I would like to improve is the strength as it has room for improvement.

Battery Life:- The phone with it’s more efficient yet powerful chipset and a larger cell size from its predecessor provides a better experience in terms of battery life.

With mixed usage of WiFi and mobile data and also using the camera app for quite some time paired with YouTube and internet browsing, I was more than comfortable in getting a full day of use with 10-15% still in the tank.
Safe to say it’s very difficult to kill it in one single day of use.

Performance:- The phone comes with last year’s flagship chip (SD 8+gen1) and it’s a beast of a performer, not only does it fly through daily tasks like watching videos or social media apps, it also has no problems in running heavy games at high settings with ease and very few frames are dropped.
All in all a very solid performer and this level of performance is more than enough for most of the people.
Notable, Incredible, Upgraded Glyph interface:- Yes, it’s a gimmick for the most part but it is what makes this phone unique and nothing have integrated it in a much better manner than the phone (1) for it to be more useful and like to see more functionality moving forward.
For the most part though, it’s more of a fashion statement than a feature and i don’t mind that.

Cons

Cameras:- Being a big camera enthusiast, I love testing phone cameras out and this one sadly didn’t impress me quite as much.
For what the phone’s asking price is, i expected better camera hardware and software to be implemented. For the good, the camera does seem to have good stabilization and noise reduction, but apart from those two things, it’s a mix bag.

The HDR for starters is a big hit or miss, and even when it does hit, it’s not very good at it and i consistently get blown out highlights, and a weird big that i detected was when shooting into a bright source of light, the processing seems to spawn dark black bands in the photo out of nowhere.

Secondly even though the noise reduction on surface seems good in daylight situations, the moment light starts to go down, there is a huge dip in the quality as the phone resorts to extreme smoothening which sacrifices a lot of details in the process, this is very evident when you zoom into pictures.

There also seems to be quite a white balance difference between the main and ultrawide sensors which is still solved by software in photos, but videos do suffer quite a bit from it.
The night mode for the most part is satisfactory except, I’d want to have a manual toggle to switch it on in some instances and also when the auto night mode does trigger, it consistently produces crushed shadows.

The video department is where it needs most improvement, the HDR is botched with blown highlights and extreme smoothening at night. When I did turn on the HDR video mode, it sacrificed a lot of detail and didn’t really do much in preserving the highlights or shadows.
I would’ve also liked to see a dedicated telephoto module for the price.

Speakers:- Even thought it has a sterio sound setup and does get decently loud, the highs and lows are very weak with the kids being very dominant. The high pitched sounds are mushed in the vocals and the bass is almost non existent even at the max volume.
Call quality:- The microphones do a good job at cancelling the noise in the background but the earpiece itself isn’t very loud and clear to listen to and i couldn’t understand a single word from the other end when I was out in live music event.
Charging speed:– Even thought it has a new and improved 45w support, the phone still takes just under an hour to fully charge which again is an area where many other smartphones have improved a lot and can do the same thing in half the time with ease. I’d like to see 65w support the next time around.
Fingerprint scanner:- The two main gripes i have with the scanner are its location and speed.
It’s placed way too low and I didn’t seem to get used to it, and secondly it’s not the fastest one out there with me having to press for quite some time and that too in a very specific way and area for it to read my finger.
Pricing:- The phone starts at 45k which is a lot to ask for in the Indian market that too for a brand as new as nothing.
Even though they have made many improvements in the second iteration, it would’ve been better to price it around the 40k mark for it to be much more competitive as there are many more well known brands under 50k which people know more about.

Ans) Phone 2 package follows the same tap-to-rip-open concept of tearing the top packaging. Once you tear open the top Dark Grey packaging, you get a separate white colour box inside that slides out.

This inside box is solid and self-contained, which you can keep with you for later in case you want to resale this phone.

Inside the box, everything greats you at once with all items placed together in their carved-out spaces.
The first thing you notice is the Nothing Phone 2 neatly tucked in a phone size cut out.

2) What is the Guide to using the Nothing Phone 2 Glyph Interface?

Ans) One of the interesting functionalities added to the Glyph Interface of Phone 2 is the Glyph Timer.
So, you can set the Glyph timer on the phone and keep the phone upside down, an LED segment works as the progress bar for the timer and you don’t have to keep checking the timer to know the progress.

The second feature is where things could get really interesting.
With Phone 2, Nothing has opened the Glyph API for third-party integration.

This means that once integrated with a third-party app such as Uber or Zomato, you can actually track your Uber and food delivery using the Glyph Interface.

The possibilities with API integration are endless.
However, it’s worth noting that while Uber and Zomata will come integrated with the Phone 2, this feature will not work natively with all apps until the developers integrate it if they wish to take advantage of it.
Though, Nothing promises that more such integration with popular apps is in the pipeline.

The Sony WF-C700N Truly Wireless Earbuds come in a pill-shaped compact case that offers both portability and convenience.

However, it’s worth mentioning that a flat design might have offered even more comfort, especially when carrying the case in tight pockets.

The case has a sturdy build quality and a delightful soft finish. This combination not only adds a premium feel to the case.

The strong magnets hold the earbuds securely in place, preventing them from accidentally falling out or getting misplaced.

We actually tried to shake them off purposely to test the hold of the magnets but the grip is strong. The case flap too has strong hinges and slap closes to ensure a secure hold.

On the back of the case, you’ll find a USB-C charge port. Though we wish it had wireless charging also.

The earbuds also have an ergonomic design philosophy. With each earbud weighing a mere 4.6g, these are lightweight and provide a snug fit even for smaller ears.

We have to say that the audio quality is impressive. These earbuds reproduce a rich mid-range sound. In our experience, we received every note and nuance crystal clear and satisfying to the ears.

Basically, Sony WF-C700N straight out of the box offers good sound quality. The active noise cancelling feature is actually quite effective in blocking out external noises. The advanced Noise Sensor Technology used here seems to taking the audio experience to the next level.

South Korean electronics maker Samsung on Thursday announced that its Wallet and Thermo Check apps are coming to the Galaxy Watch series. In addition, the WearOS based smartwatches in the line to get instant messaging app WhatsApp.

“A range of new apps for its Galaxy Watch series will bring more responsive, adaptable and multi-functional smartwatch experiences for Galaxy users. With Samsung Wallet, Thermo Check and WhatsApp, users can do more than ever straight from their wrist,” said Samsung.

Samsung had last year integrated its Pay and Pass services into one app, called Samsung Wallet, for its smartphones. The app is now coming to Galaxy Watch series.

It will debut with the new Galaxy Watch series, which is set to arrive on July 26 at its Galaxy Unpacked Seoul. The Samsung Wallet app enables users to make payments, store identity documents, and more.

Samsung said, the Thermo Check app would allow users to measure the temperature of their surroundings, from meals they are about to eat to water they are about to swim in, all without any physical contact required.

Like the Samsung Wallet app, the Thermo Check will be available first on the upcoming Galaxy Watch devices. It would later be available for the Galaxy Watch5 series.

As for WhatsApp, it is now available for the company’s WearOS-based smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch5 series and Galaxy Watch4 series.

The app will let users continue conversations, reply to messages by voice and even answer calls, all without needing to take out their phones, said Samsung.

WhatsApp for smartwatches was announced on July 19. It is available only on devices running Wear OS 3 or later. The app has been rolled out worldwide.

The company will launch the K11 5G on July 25.

Ahead of the launch, OPPO has started teasing the key specifications and features of the upcoming mid-range smartphone. The K11 5G’s design has also been revealed ahead of its launch.

The phone will sport a flat frame design. It will also feature a triple-camera setup on the back.
OPPO has confirmed some more details about the K11 5G. The teaser confirms the RAM and storage details of the phone.
OPPO has also revealed the display design of the K11 5G.

Bobee Liu, Oppo China President, stated in a Weibo post that the upcoming Oppo K11 5G will be priced around CNY 2,000 (roughly Rs. 22,900) and teased the company will offer a flagship-level camera in the handset. The phone is confirmed to come with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 sensor. It will launch in Glacier Blue and Moon Shadow Gray (translated from Chinese) colour options. It is speculated that the phone aims to compete with the Honor X50, which starts at CNY 1,399 (roughly Rs. 15,900) for the base 8GB + 128GB storage variant.

The company also revealed the colour options and design of the Opoo K11 5G handset. The phone is seen with a flat display and a 2.8D curved back with rounded edges.

Two slightly raised circular cutouts are placed in the upper left corner of the back panel that houses the triple rear camera units alongside an LED flash unit beside those.

The volume rocker and the power button are seen on the right edge. The handset is confirmed to measure 8.23mm in thickness and weigh 184 grams.

OPPO K11 5G: Specifications

In the teaser of the upcoming device, Oppo has confirmed that the K11 5G will come with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Additionally, it will also offer 8GB of virtual RAM support. The processor has also been confirmed by the company.
The K11 5G will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 782G SoC, based on a 6nm process with a peak clock speed of 2.7GHz.

The rear of the phone is confirmed to have a triple-camera setup.
The main camera sensor will be the same 50MP Sony IMX890 sensor that’s also present in the OPPO Reno 10 Pro+ 5G, OnePlus 11.

Other specifications of the K11 5G have been tipped or leaked. Some rumours suggest that the phone is likely to be a tweaked version of the OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G. This model has been recently launched in India. The battery of the K11 is expected to support 100W fast charging.

Rest of the hardware is tipped to be the same as the OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G.

OPPO recently confirmed that the K11 5G will feature a triple-camera setup on the back. The phone has the same 50MP Sony IMX890 primary camera sensor found in the OPPO Reno 10 Pro+ 5G, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Nord 3, etc.

Other details of the phone have leaked as well. It is tipped that the K11 5G will be a tweaked version of the OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G, which was launched recently in India. Ans) The Razr 40 is available in three colours: Sage Green, Summer Lilac, and Vanilla Cream. While all three colourways look quite stunning, we spent most of our time with the Lilac variant. Looking at the pricing difference, it’s quite obvious the younger sibling had to cut some corners. It misses out on a larger cover screen from the Ultra variant but gets a 1.47-inch display instead.

This cover screen immediately reminded us of the Galaxy Z Flip, which had a slightly smaller screen estate. The screen is still useful as it displays recent notifications, contacts, weather details, event details, music, peek display (wannabe always-on), and more. We are yet to check if it allows you to pick up phone calls or reply to texts, though it seems very unlikely.

Unfortunately, the cover screen cannot help you take selfies by displaying a viewfinder. Instead, it displays funny little emoji wallpapers, not useful but still fun. It’s an AMOLED panel that refreshes at 60Hz with a peak brightness of 1000 nits.

The entire screen module protrudes a bit, with two circular cameras accompanying it. It features a 64-megapixel primary camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera. The in-hand experience is quite sophisticated, partially thanks to the faux-leather finish at the back. It has slightly curved sides, which help with the grip. The right side of the device features a volume rocker and a power button which doubles up as a fingerprint sensor.

The Razr 40 is IP52 rated, which means it’s not just water but dust resistant. This is perhaps the first time we see any dust resistance in a foldable, so it’s a pretty big deal. Motorola has chosen to keep the branding minimal, with a shiny logo on the bottom portion. There’s no extra flamboyance on the hinges. Speaking of which, while the hinge is designed to hold the display for watching content, taking selfies, and more — we found it to be a bit stiffer than the one on the Ultra. When folded, there’s no visible gap on the sides, which is good.

Upon opening the phone, we were greeted by a tall 6.9-inch LTPO OLED display with relatively minimal crease. It features a punch hole cutout at the top, holding a 32-megapixel selfie camera in place. The panel has a refresh rate 144Hz, so the animations were buttery smooth.

The Razr 40 is powered by a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, the only phone with this processor in India, as of now. As mentioned, it comes in a lone 8GB LPPDDR4X RAM and 256GB UFS 2.2 storage variant. It packs in a 4,200mAh battery inside with support for 30W wired charging and 8W wireless charging.

Ans) Both the Razr 40 siblings are, without a doubt, promising offerings from the house of Motorola. The Moto Razr 40 is the cheapest and more accessible clamshell foldable on the market, and its only competitor is the year-old Galaxy Z Flip 3.

While Motorola had to cut some corners in the processing and cover display department, it’s still a good offering for someone who always wanted to flaunt a foldable. The larger battery should help the Razr 40 breathe for extended hours. On the other hand, the Razr 40 Ultra’s selling point is its massive outer screen. Motorola wants you to stick to the cover screen for almost all of your tasks, and we don’t have an issue with that.

Motorola gets a lot right with the latest Razr. It’s a compact phone that turns a big smartphone screen into something portable that easily fits in a pocket. It’s even got rounded edges to make it comfortable. It makes it nice to hold, but conversely, also means that it loses some of its Razr-ness.

The Motorola Razr – historically – has been a sharp, angled phone. It wasn’t named after a razor for no reason. And yet, the 2023 versions don’t have anything particularly sharp and angular about them at all. They’re rounded, soft and friendly. While the very first model looked like it might cut you, this just wants to give you a cuddle.

It’s a good-looking phone that snaps shut leaving no gap between the two halves of the phone. That means you’re not likely to find dust and debris finding its way in there. At least, not as easily as you might on the Galaxy Z Flip 4, with its gap near the hinge.

Moto is launching the phone in three colours: Infinite Black, Glacier Blue and Viva Magenta. The last of those is the only one that features a soft vegan leather back rather than glass. That gives the pinkish-reddish model a softer feel on the palm, but the matte, frosted glass on the other two has a great, smooth texture too.
