Remember the reported privacy disaster that was (is) Nothing Chats?

Companies are trying their best to replicate an iMessage-like service for Android phones so that users who don’t have an iPhone don’t feel left out.

This is very much a US problem though as the entire world is happy with WhatsApp.

However, in a recent development, a new service Beeper Mini has been launched, which also aims to bring an iMessage-like experience to those on the Android platform.

What is this app and is it going to be different from Nothing Chats?

Let’s find out.

A New Approach to Cross-Platform Messaging

Immediately the biggest difference from previous attempts to bridge the Android-iOS messaging divide becomes clear.

Beeper Mini does not rely on relaying messages through a Mac or requiring users to log in with an Apple ID.

Instead, it establishes direct communication with Apple’s servers.

I don’t have to tell you that this innovative approach involves registering a user’s Android phone number with iMessage and requires extensive reverse engineering of Apple’s proprietary messaging system.

Beeper co-founder and CEO Eric Migicovsky stated “We’re not actually a middleman anymore. The research that we’ve done is actually reverse-engineering the iMessage protocol, down to the lowest layer of the protocol.

So Beeper Mini doesn’t use a Mac server as a relay like all the other apps — they have a Mac Mini in a data center somewhere. And when you send a message, you’re actually sending a message to the Mac Mini, which then forwards it to iMessage,”

Key Features of Beeper Mini

Beeper Mini stands out with several key features:

  • Android Phone Number as a Blue Bubble: There goes the green bubble vs blue bubble debate, at least for a while.  Beeper Mini will enable Android phone numbers to appear as ‘blue bubbles’ in iMessage, giving Android users a proper inroad into iPhone-exclusive group chats.
  •  Enhanced Design and Speed: Apart from that you get the usual new design, where there is an emphasis on speed and a user-friendly interface, providing a smooth messaging experience.
  • End-to-End Encryption: I think this is the most important part. Prioritizing user privacy, Beeper Mini offers end-to-end encryption, ensuring that all communications are secure and private. Let’s see if it stays that way.
  • Standalone Functionality: Unique among similar apps, Beeper Mini operates independently, without the need for additional hardware or connections to other devices.

However, this service is of course not free.

Beeper Mini is available for download on the Google Play Store, with a seven-day free trial followed by a nominal subscription fee of $2 per month.

“Our business model is simple: we build a great app and earn money from those who find value in it. We feel that this business model aligns our success with your best interests. No ads. Complete data security and privacy.

And we stay incentivized to continue improving Beeper Mini with new features and improvements,” says Beeper in their blog post.

Is Beeper a company just coming out of the blue?

Actually no. Beeper, founded by Eric Migicovsky, is a startup focused on integrating various messaging platforms.

It has been around for a while and raised $16 million since its inception.

Beeper Mini is notable for its open-source code and its commitment to user privacy, claiming no access to messages, contacts, or Apple ID passwords, something that Nothing failed to notice with its own Nothing Chats.

Speaking of which, Nothing Chats, a project in collaboration with Sunbird, faced significant privacy concerns.

Though it claimed encryption and privacy, it was found to transmit messages in unencrypted plain text and store media files on a Google database platform, leading to its withdrawal from the Google Play Store.

No one knows, if or when the Nothing Chats app will return but since it was exclusive only to Nothing Phone (2), it’s probably not going to be missed a lot.
