Google Pixel 7a Durability Test: Check Performance Result in JerryRig Everything & Comparison to Pixel 7 Pro

0
Google Pixel 7a

HIGHLIGHTS

* The Pixel 7a is Google’s latest smartphone and it’s on the affordable side.
* The smartphone comes with a plastic body which is one major difference when compared to the more expensive Pixel 7.
* The Pixel 7a was put through JerryRigEverything’s durability test and the result is quite surprising.

Google launched the Pixel 7a earlier this month in India. The Pixel 7a is a more affordable offering that is much cheaper than the Pixel 7 but one major tradeoff is its plastic body.

Speaking of which, the Pixel 7a also went through JerryRig Everything’s durability test which ended up with an unexpected result.

Google recently introduced the Pixel 7a — a confusingly priced budget phone that’s costlier than its predecessor, but cheaper than the Pixel 7, while trading a few features to achieve said price.

Google Pixel 7a

With Google’s tendency to prefer an all-plastic build on the a-series, one would presume there’s no way the Pixel 7a is sturdier than the flagship Pixel 7 Pro. However, YouTuber Zack Nelson’s classic durability test has a surprising conclusion.

The JerryRig Everything channel has earned a name for itself in the tech YouTube community for videos that push devices to the physical limit of their endurance.

With the $500 Pixel 7a, Google seems to have made a pretty sturdy phone, despite the liberal use of plastic in the construction.

The phone has metal side rails, detachable metal buttons, and a metal SIM tray, all with adequate sealing to maintain the IP67 water resistance of the device.

The Pixel 7a’s display survives for 25 seconds directly under a lighter’s flame, and the OLED panel recovers completely as well.

Its camera visor is still made of metal, and scratches easily. The screen has Corning Gorilla Glass protection, so it should be okay sharing a pocket with your keys and coins, but sand and other harder substances can leave a mark.

The plastic back panel also gives in to scratches from a razor blade. So, you’ll be better off buying a protective case for your Pixel 7a, but not for the same reasons as the 7 Pro.

Nelson suggests we avoid associating plastic with low-cost or cheap items, noting that toys and tools built to last also use plastic.

While we understand Google’s use of plastic on the Pixel 7a helps bring the cost down, there’s the counter-argument that the display is glass whether you like it or not. Nonetheless, the newest Pixel isn’t as weak as the 7 Pro, as we can see in the final bend test.

Google has also made an interesting design decision of having the metal camera visor separate from the metallic frame of the new budget phone.

Although it looks like a structural weak point, the phone holds up to Nelson’s powerful bend tests admirably well, showing zero signs of permanent deformation. So perhaps a slim case would suffice, because Google’s design doesn’t need help with the structural rigidity here.

Google clearly learned valuable lessons from the Pixel 7 Pro’s design, and has made the Pixel 7a almost twice as rigid for just over half the Pro model’s price. You’re getting your money’s worth here, and the Pixel 7a is well on its way to becoming one of the best budget phones out there.

Google Pixel 7a Durability Test

Google Pixel 7a

The Google Pixel 7a comes in a plastic body but with a metal frame, removable metal buttons for the volume rocker and power button, and a metal SIM tray. The metal frame around the body easily scratches with JerryRig’s razor blade.

It has a Gorilla Glass 3 which gets easily scratched at level 6 and even more at level 7. When put under a lighter flame, the Pixel 7a’s screen lasts for 25 seconds until it starts reacting but it also quickly recovers.

Now the part where the Pixel 7a outperforms the more expensive Pixel 7 Pro and even the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is the bend test. When trying to bend the Pixel 7a from the front and back, it doesn’t budge at all proving that the phone is indeed durable.

Yes, it’s a plastic body on the Pixel 7a but as JerryRig says, it’s still better than glass that can easily shatter into a million pieces.

In addition to a durable body, the Pixel 7a also has a decent set of specifications and you get almost all that the Pixel 7 has to offer. Here’s a look at its specifications.

Faqs on Google Pixel 7a

1) This torture test suggests Google’s Pixel 7a mid-ranger is more durable than the Pixel 7 Pro. Details ?

Ans) Yes, the Pixel 7a is without a doubt one of the best budget 5G phones available today both on paper and in real-life use (at least based on the time we spent testing out Google’s latest stock Android-running mid-ranger but how will the plastic-and-metal 6.1-incher hold up in the long run?

Although we haven’t returned from the future or checked our crystal ball of late to attempt to answer that question with any degree of certainty, there is one totally unscientific but generally reliable way to tell how solidly built a brand-new mobile device truly is.

Yes, we are talking about Zack Nelson’s grueling and often unnecessarily violent JerryRigEverything durability inspections over on YouTube, which sometimes end on surprisingly good terms. While no phone has ever managed to emerge completely unscathed from a clash with Nelson’s razor blades and lighter, some handsets are capable of resisting bending attempts much better than others.

Surprisingly or not, that’s true for the Pixel 7a in relation to the larger, higher-end, and way pricier Pixel 7 Pro. It’s not entirely clear how Google has managed to pull off such an unlikely engineering feat, but the $499 Pixel 7a shows almost no sign of flex whatsoever when bent from the back… or the front.

That was definitely not the case for the $899 and up Pixel 7 Pro flagship when its durability was assessed last fall, and although the 6.7-inch beast did not altogether break under Nelson’s pressure, its overall integrity was seriously threatened, raising some big questions regarding its long-term resistance to the challenges of everyday life.

While no one can guarantee the Pixel 7a will still work one, two, or three years after you buy it, and just like with any other contemporary smartphone, drops on hard surfaces remain a potential issue, the results of this durability test are clearly encouraging for hardcore Google fans who can’t afford or don’t want to get the Pixel 7 Pro.

What’s interesting is that last year’s Pixel 6a mid-ranger was similarly praised for its apparent toughness and durability… despite not holding up anywhere near as well as its successor to bending.

2) What are The best Google Pixel 7a accessories?

Ans) Google’s Pixel 7a represents unprecedented midrange value. It sports a best-in-class smartphone camera, a smooth 90Hz refresh rate display, excellent performance, and fantastic upgrade commitment. Google promises three years of Android version support and five years of security coverage. If you don’t enjoy shelling out for a new phone annually, the 7a promises buttery, up-to-date performance for years. As such, you’ll want to accompany your Pixel 7a with accessories that will last just as long as the life of the phone. Let’s run through some of the best Google Pixel 7a accessories on the market.

Carl Pei confirms Nothing Phone (2) will be powered by Snapdragon 8+ Gen1

0

HIGHLIGHTS

* Nothing Phone (2) is confirmed to be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 SoC.
* The handset is a clear upgrade from Phone (1) which came with the Snapdragon 778G+.
* Nothing Phone (2) launch date is yet to be revealed.

In March, Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced that the Nothing Phone (2) would be launched later this year. He also hinted that the upcoming smartphone will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series chipset and focus more on software experience.

Soon, the rumour mill speculated that the Nothing Phone (2) would be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

Nothing Phone (2)

In a recent tweet, Carl Pei confirmed that the Nothing Phone (2) will indeed be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Compared to the Nothing Phone (1) which features the Snapdragon 778G, apps on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 open almost twice as faster.

The former OnePlus co-founder said that apart from performance gains, the new chipset brings huge improvements to the battery life, network connectivity and camera.

Since the Image Signal Processor on the chipset can capture more than 4,000 times the data captured by Nothing Phone (1), it will offer advanced features like Raw HDR and 4K video recording at 30fps.

Nothing Phone (2)

At the Mobile World Congress 2023, Carl Pei also confirmed that the Nothing Phone (2) will support satellite connectivity. However, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 packs the X65 modem, which does not feature satellite connectivity, hinting that the upcoming phone might sport a modified version of the chipset.

After the successful launch of the Nothing Phone (1) last year, Carl Pei’s brainchild, Nothing is gearing up to introduce the Nothing Phone (2) shortly.

The handset will come as a premium offering, unlike the predecessor which is a mid-range offering. During MWC 2023 event in February, Nothing had confirmed the Phone (2) would come with the Snapdragon 8-series chipset.

Now, Carl Pei took to Twitter to announce the Phone (2) will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 SoC, which is again in line with the rumours and leaks.

Nothing Phone (2) Chipset

Nothing Phone (2)

Furthermore, the top executive explains the reason behind choosing the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 SoC.

* Firstly, Carl Pei acknowledges the new chipset is a clear upgrade from Phone (1) which came with the Snapdragon 778G+.

* Probably having used the Nothing Phone (2), Carl Pei says that during the initial tests, the app opening speed is twice as fast compared to Phone (1).

* There is an impressive 80 percent performance improvement.

* Carl Pei says that opting for the Snapdragon 8 Series rather than the 7 Series brings significant improvements across the board including battery life, network connectivity, and camera capabilities.

* The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features an 18-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP) capable of capturing over 4,000 times more camera data than the ISP used on the Phone (1). This results in the Phone (2) camera offering advanced features like Raw HDR and 4K recording at 60 fps.

* The Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 is based on 4nm TSMC and offers stable performance.

Interestingly, Carl Pei talks about pricing as well. The top executive says that “Sometimes the latest technology comes at a cost which isn’t always justified from a user benefit standpoint. Choosing Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 ensures that Phone (2) remains accessible while delivering a significantly improved experience compared to Phone (1).“

Nothing Phone (2) Specifications (Expected)

Nothing Phone (2)

The Nothing Phone (2) is expected to feature a 6.55-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The phone is expected to feature a 50MP primary camera with OIS.

The Nothing Phone (2) is topped to launch in three variants of 8GB + 128GB, 8GB + 256GB, and 12GB + 256GB.

Nothing Phone (2) Specifications Revealed Via Geekbench

Nothing Phone (2)

The Nothing Phone (2) will launch as a new premium smartphone later this year. The phone has visited the Geekbench website ahead of its launch.

The listing on Geekbench confirms some key specs of the device.
The Phone (2) has the model number A065. According to the listing on Geekbench, the device draws power from a Snapdragon processor codenamed taro.

This essentially is the codename for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, which has a peak clock speed of 3.0GHz.

The SoC has three performance cores clocked at 2.5GHz and four efficiency cores clocked at 1.8GHz.

Nothing Phone (2)

The Nothing smartphone’s variant listed on Geekbench has 12GB of RAM. We can expect the phone to launch the device with 8GB of RAM as well. It is likely to launch with 128GB and 256GB of storage in various markets.

The Phone (2) scored 1253 and 3833 in Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core tests. It was also spotted running Android 13 on Geekbench. The device is likely to feature Nothing OS 1.5 on top of Android.

The listing does not reveal any other specs of the device. We previously reported that the Phone (2) is likely to pack a 5000mAh battery. It is also likely to sport an AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

The device has cleared the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) certification website, which hints at an imminent launch. It is also confirmed to be available for purchase via Flipkart soon after it has been launched in India.

Nothing Phone (2)

The Nothing Phone (2) already cleared the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard) certification, which suggests the Indian launch might be inching close.

Not much else is known about Phone (2) at the moment but we’re curious to see the direction Nothing is headed. We’re hoping to learn more details about the phone in the days to come.

OnePlus Nord 3 5G Price in India, launch timeline, Specifications & live images leaked

OnePlus Nord 3 5G

HIGHLIGHTS

* OnePlus Nord 3 is tipped to launch in India in June.
* The upcoming OnePlus phone is expected to cost around Rs 30,000/Rs 32,000 in India for the base model.
* OnePlus Nord 3 will arrive with MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC, a 6.74-inch display, and Android 13 OS.

OnePlus Nord 3 5G has been a part of the rumour mill for quite some time and is easily the most-anticipated OnePlus phone to launch.

The handset will arrive as a successor to the Nord 2 from last year.

OnePlus Nord 3 5G

Now, while we wait for the announcement, tipster Yogesh Brar has shared the phone’s key specifications and also tipped to launch timeline and Nord 3 price in India details. This gives us a clear indication of what to expect when the phone lands.

Separately, in another leak, the OnePlus Nord 3 alleged live images have surfaced online, showing the entire design of the phone in full glory, probably for the first time.

However, the source of the leak may not be completely legit and the image we see belongs to the Chinese variant.

OnePlus Nord 3 India launch Timeline and Price

OnePlus Nord 3 5G

The OnePlus Nord 3 India launch is tipped to happen in June. The handset is expected to have a starting price of Rs 30,000/Rs 32,000.

Alleged OnePlus Nord 3 live images

OnePlus Nord 3 5G

The OnePlus Nord 3 live images have been shared by a Twitter user @realMlgmXyysd, showing off the complete design.

The phone looks identical to the OnePlus Ace 2V, which makes us believe the Nord 3 could be a rebrand.

While the live image shows the design completely, the source appears to be dubious as we see the Chinese variant and not the global model, so it may very well be the OnePlus Ace 2V.

OnePlus Nord 3 5G

The handset has a centre-positioned punch-hole cutout for the selfie shooter, flat edges, and narrow bezels.

Flipping the phone to the back, we are greeted with two circular modules that house triple camera sensors and an LED flash. We see OnePlus branding as well.

OnePlus Nord 3 5G

The power button and alert slider are on the right edge, while the volume rocker could be on the left side.

Interestingly, one of the images shows the ‘About Phone’ page of the phone.

* The smartphone could be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset.

* For cameras, it could house a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP secondary sensor and a 2MP sensor at the rear. It will also feature a 16MP front camera for selfies.

* The OnePlus Nord 3 5G is also expected to pack a 5,000mAh battery with 80W fast charging support.

Ans) The Nord 3 was supposed to arrive in 2022, but the company chose to unveil the Nord 2T with minor upgrades. Now, the original successor to the Nord 2 is expected to arrive in the near future with better specifications this year. It could feature either a 4,500mAh or 5,000mAh battery under the hood.

The company could provide support for a 100W fast charger considering the Nord 2T has support for 80W fast charging tech.

The mid-range phone features an AMOLED screen which will likely refresh at 120Hz and operate at FHD+ resolution. We might see a triple camera array at the back of the OnePlus Nord 3. The headset is expected to have mixed reality capabilities, with both virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) experiences. Let us now take a look at the latest rumors and leaks about the Apple AR/VR headset.

Rumored Features
The Apple AR/VR headset is expected to have mixed reality capabilities, with both virtual and augmented reality experiences. It is rumored to have 4K resolution, eye-tracking technology, and a high refresh rate. The device is also expected to have a slim visor design and a separate battery pack. According to some reports, the headset will work with existing iPadOS apps.

Pricing and Release Date
The Apple AR/VR headset is rumored to be released in 2023, with some reports suggesting that it will be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. The device is expected to be expensive, with some analysts predicting a price of around $3,000.
However, Apple engineers plan to use more affordable components to bring the price down for a lower-priced version of the headset. However, it will have the same general AR/VR “mixed reality” functionality as the more expensive version.

Apple’s AR/VR headset has faced numerous delays, and while the company originally wanted to launch it in 2022, that wasn’t possible. According to some reports, the device has faced hardware and software issues that have caused internal disagreements among Apple executives.
Some insiders are not feeling confident in the product. However, Apple continues to push ahead with its headset despite other big players in the virtual and augmented reality world seemingly walking away from the market.

Future Plans
Apple engineers plan to use more affordable components to bring the price down for a lower-priced version of the headset that will have the same general AR/VR “mixed reality” functionality as the more expensive version. There are also reports that a more affordable second-gen Apple AR headset is already in the works.

Apple’s AR/VR headset is one of the most expected products of 2023. While there have been issues and delays in its development, Apple is still pushing ahead with its headset. The device will come with MR features, at least this is the expectation. This means that it will have both AR and VR capacity. Of course, no one should expect this device to be cheap. Though the company plans to use cheaper parts to cut down the price of the cheaper version of the headset. However, it will still not be very cheap. We look forward to seeing what Apple has in store for us at WWDC 2023.

While we wait the official release of the Apple Reality Pro headset, there are some specs that gets people interested. With its high – resolution displays, top camera system, seamless AR and VR switching, and strong performance, the headset is poised to redefine the XR experience. As the market eagerly waits for its launch, the Apple Reality Pro headset has the potential to set a new benchmark for immersive tech.

2) Apple schedules “special event” for June 5, likely for AR/VR headset.Details?

Ans) As the name suggests, Apple’s WorldWide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) is aimed mostly at developers. However, it’s also an opportunity to do some marketing with a well-publicized keynote and the announcement of new Apple OS versions that gets iPhone, iPad and Mac users buzzing.

This year there will also be a mysteriously titled “Special Event at Apple Park”, an all-day event on June 5. What could this be about?

Apple hasn’t confirmed anything, but this could have something to do with xrOS, the software platform that will power Apple’s Mixed Reality headset, and the headset itself. The latest reports state that the headset is on track for a June launch and some analysts believe that it could boost the whole AR/VR industry.

The Apple Reality Pro is expected to be one of the most powerful XR headsets and it will be priced accordingly. It is said to have micro OLED displays from Sony, dual processors fabbed by TSMC, 12 cameras and an external power supply. The price we’ve heard is $3,000, so this will be aimed at professionals rather than recreational users. The headset is expected to go on sale later this year.

3) What is WWDC 2023 schedule?

Ans) WWDC 2023 is Apple’s annual event where the company dives deep into information regarding its latest software and how these changes will benefit developers. It will open with the company’s signature Keynote on June 5th at 10:00am PDT / 1:00pm EDT, which is set to be the primary focus of there show where we will see the latest news about macOS 14, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, tvOS 17 and watchOS 10.
But beyond just that, we have reason to believe we’ll see Apple’s mixed-reality headset at the show, alongside the heavily rumored Apple Silicon Mac Pro.

Paul Hudson also hinted on Twitter that there will be a special evening activity for those who make it there in-person, which is creating speculation that those attending the event will get an opportunity to test out Apple’s mixed reality headset.

After the Keynote, a developer lunch begins at 12:00pm PDT / 3:00pm EDT before the Platforms State of the Union starts at 1:30pm PDT / 4:30pm EDT. The latter is especially important as it is set to offer an in-depth breakdown of what developers can expect from Apple’s latest updates and changes.

At 3:00pm PDT / 6:00pm EDT is when the Meet the Teams portion will happen, which won’t be relevant to people who aren’t involved physically. In the same vein, people at the event can tour the inside of the ring and the inner meadow at around the same time.

What’s most important to take away from this schedule is that the Keynote starts at 10:00am PDT and the Platforms State of the Union starts at 1:30pm PDT. Both of these are available to anyone on the web to tune in and watch, so if you’re interesting in keep up with all things Apple, we recommend saving the date and time.
