With an aim to expand ChatGPT to more users, OpenAI has launched the ChatGPT app for iOS users in 32 countries, including India, after its launch in the US a few days ago.

However, several initial users from the US have reported experiencing battery drainage issues and overheating problems while using the ChatGPT application on their iPhones. It’s too soon to say whether such issues exist in India as well.

The ChatGPT website and app have comparable features, but the app can be extremely useful whether you need help, knowledge, or simply want to have an interesting chat.

ChatGPT is officially getting an iOS app, ending the need to speculate over whether that App Store app promising you ChatGPT access is legit or malware.

On its site, OpenAI announced its official ChatGPT for iOS app. This brings the full power of the AI chatbot to your iPhone so you’re no longer limited to a web browser. Plus the mobile version integrates Whisper, OpenAI’s speech-recognition system, so now you can prompt ChatGPT with your voice. The app is available to download right now over on the App Store and thankfully, there are no ads shoehorned into it.

Just like when using ChatGPT on your browser, you get what you pay for with the ChatGPT app. That means unless you pay up for ChatGPT Plus, you’ll be limited to GPT-3.5, the same model that powers the free version of ChatGPT online.

If you have a ChatGPT Plus account though, OpenAI says you’ll get access to the GPT-4 model, which is trained with up-to-date information.

Plus subscribers will also get early access to features and faster response times, perks they already had with their web subscription. It’s unclear if ChatGPT plugins and web browsing — new beta features for ChatGPT Plus rolling out now — will also be available on the iOS app.

And don’t worry Android users. While currently, the official mobile app for ChatGPT is only available to iOS users in the US, an expanded rollout is tipped in OpenAI’s official announcement. OpenAI says, “P.S. Android users, you’re next! ChatGPT will be coming to your devices soon.”

How to get ChatGPT for iOS

The process to get set up for ChatGPT on iOS is simple. Either search for OpenAI ChatGPT in the App Store or head over to the app page in the App Store directly. Then just tap install and you’ll be good to go.

You will need an OpenAI account to access ChatGPT whether you’re in the iOS app or on a web browser so make sure to check out our guide on how to use ChatGPT if you don’t already have an account. You can also sign up for an account in the login process on the app itself.

Once you’re set up on your iPhone, there are a lot of things you can do with ChatGPT. You can compose music, write a book (or at least a chapter) and even play text-based games. So have fun! Just make sure you are downloading the official app. Fake ChatGPT apps are rampant and can do anything from try and scam you to pay for free features or put malware on your phone. So make sure to only download the official OpenAI ChatGPT app.

ChatGPT app for iOS launched in India

After making the ChatGPT for iOS available in the US on May 18th, the company has now rolled out the app in India and other countries as well.

The ChatGPT app for iOS syncs your history across devices and is available for free. ChatGPT currently offers Hindi language support, with the possibility of adding support for additional languages in the future.

Additionally, Whisper, the business’ open-source speech recognition system, is integrated, allowing voice input. Meanwhile, Android users can expect a specific app soon.

ChatGPT iOS app: users complain of battery drainage, overheating

The all-new ChatGPT app is reportedly riddled with bugs. According to Reddit users, the main ones include excessive battery drain and device overheating while using the application. Some users have even claimed that the app does not work at all.

Overall, the ChatGPT app does not appear to be very stable right now. However, looks like these issues are limited to global users and have not reached India.

There does not appear to be a practical technique to eliminate the device’s overheating and major battery-draining concerns while using the app at the moment. Some Redditors suggested turning off the haptic feedback on the gadgets; however, this does not help either.

Shared links feature comes to ChatGPT

The Sam Altman-led company has also introduced a new feature named shared links for its chatbot. This feature will enable users to create and share their ChatGPT conversations with others. Users who receive the shared link can either view the conversation or can copy it to their chats to continue the thread.

Currently, the feature is being rolled out to a handful of testers in the alpha version. OpenAI is also planning to expand this feature to all users (including free) in the upcoming weeks. To share ChatGPT conversations, users have to click on the thread they’d like to share. Then they have to select the “Share” button and click on the “Copy Link” option to share the link(s).

Disabling chat history on iOS

Users can now disable their ChatGPT chat history on iPhones. OpenAI has confirmed that conversations that started on devices when chat history is disabled won’t be used to improve its models. This feature will also ensure that the user’s history doesn’t appear on any device and the chats will only be stored for 30 days. Just like the feature on the web, this setting will also not sync across browsers or devices.

OpenAI has integrated the browsing feature “more deeply” with Bing. This feature is currently in beta and is available only for paid users. The company has promised to expand the integration soon.

ChatGPT Plus users can get early access to experimental new features, which may change during development. The company has noted that these features will be accessible via a new beta panel in settings. These features will be rolled out to all Plus users within the next week.
