Demand of over 1.5 lakh in roles in 5G, cloud computing and other new-age technologies in last one year
Demand of over 1.5 lakh in roles in 5G, cloud computing and other new-age technologies in last one year

There was a combined demand of over 1.5 lakh in roles in 5G, Cloud Computing, AI & Big Data Analytics, IoT, Mobile App-Development and Robotic Process Automation with demand supply gap of almost 28% in last one year, revealed a new report by Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC).

The talent demand supply gap will continue to widen with the advent of 5G and allied technologies rollout, said the report titled ‘Overview: Indian Telecom Market 2022-23’ which was released today in New Delhi. The study charts out the areas of traction where the telecom industry would witness growth in the coming financial year.

In view of India’s 5G rollout in the near future, TSSC has firmed up its plans to boost skill infra and workforce along with its partners and stakeholders. The industry-led apex body – jointly set up by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) – plans to train 1 lakh people in the next three years and open 10 new Centres of Excellence across the country.

DoT Secretary K Rajaraman

The report launch witnessed the presence of Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship; K Rajaraman, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications; and Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

The various dignitaries from ministries, industry, and academia deliberated the steps to be taken to achieve workforce skilling and optimization for the next phase of India’s economic growth where telecom is an important pivot.

DoT Secretary K Rajaraman said, “India, with a vast gamut of telecom and network related services, has an immense opportunity for skilling and growth. A levelled progression in the skilling requirement will ensure progression and a deeper look at the technological changes along with skilling will ensure upgradation, make the workforce more relevant for future. This would require a tremendous amount of follow ups within the IT systems with high reliability which will enable affordable upskilling/reskilling.”

“We hope to address policy issues like low penetration of broadband, RoW issues, and the industry needs to proliferate at CAGR of 30-40%, in order to create phenomenal jobs. TSSC should put in place a set of occupational categories such as rural broadband technician which can support the development of BharatNet within the country, especially rural areas,” added Rajaraman.

MSDE Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal said, “In next decades, technological changes will be there but the human nature will remain the same. Telecom is embedded in every sector such as entertainment, construction, agriculture, etc., right from production to the distribution. It is important to train the workforce to use these new technologies in a much more effective fashion. When we talk about jobs in telecom sector, we should not talk about only the jobs here but how they need some kind of upskilling.”

ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo moderated a panel consisting of industry stalwarts like Dr N. S. Kalsi (Chairman, NCVET), Ved Mani Tiwari (COO, NSDC), P. Balaji (CRO, VI), T. R. Dua (DG, DIPA) and Arvind Bali (CEO, TSSC). They discussed the rollout of 5G services and allied technology, and their use cases with regard to skilling of workforce in India.

Akhil Gupta, Vice Chairman, Bharti Group, said, “We have achieved great success over the years in skilling the youth of India. We now plan to accelerate skilling initiatives to international regions and map the international workforce demand. We will achieve the Hon’ble Prime Ministers’ vision to make India the skill capital of the world.”

Arvind Bali, CEO, TSSC, said, “We are focused on providing the workforce demand for the growth of 5G ecosystem in India. The ecosystem is seeing a big influx of manufacturing units with approval for PLI in telecom equipment, electronics, and handset manufacturing. With OEMs setting shop in India, they will need a plethora of job roles to set up their supply chain. We aim to aid the ecosystem with a world-class skilled workforce for 5G and its allied technologies.”

TSSC plans to expand its existing infrastructure with 10 new Centres of Excellence across India and build the much-needed capacity to train a quality workforce on futuristic technologies such as 5G, IoT, AI, ML, M2M etc. The organisation plans to expand to telecom manufacturing and service clusters where the need for a skilled workforce is paramount.

Apple announces Door Detection, Live Captions among various software features to mark Global Accessibility Awareness Day

0
Apple updates

To celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day and offer new tools to differently-abled users for navigation, health, communication, and more, Apple has announced various software features to reiterate its commitment to make inclusive products.

Among various software features coming later this year, Apple has announced to add navigation tools, door detection technology, and live captions to help users with low vision or visually impaired, physical and motor disabilities, and users with hearing disability.

The US-based tech giant has used advancements across hardware, software, and machine learning technology to make inclusive products. Here is the list of newly added features by Apple

Door Detection

To navigate the last few feet to their destination, visually impaired or users with low vision can use their iPhone and iPad with Door Detection. This cutting-edge navigation feature allows users to locate a door upon arriving at a new destination. It also allows users to understand how far they are from it, and describe door attributes — including if it is open or closed, and when it’s closed, whether it can be opened by pushing, turning a knob, or pulling a handle.

Featuring combined power of LiDAR, camera, and on-device machine learning, Door Detection can also read signs and symbols around the door. This technology will help users to know about the room number at an office, or the presence of an accessible entrance symbol. iPhone and iPad models with the LiDAR Scanner will be equipped with Door Detection technology..

Apple has confirmed that Door Detection can be found in a new Detection Mode within Magnifier, the built-in app of the Company supporting blind and low vision users.

Door Detection, along with Image Descriptions and People Detection, can each be used separately or simultaneously in Detection Mode, offering users with vision difficulties a go-to place with customizable tools to help navigate and access bettwer descriptions of their surroundings.

Besides navigation tools within Magnifier, sound and haptics feedback for VoiceOver users to identify the starting point for walking directions will also be offered by Apple Maps.

Voice Control and Switch Control

With the help of assistive features such as Voice Control and Switch Control, users with physical and motor disabilities can fully control Apple Watch remotely from their iPhone with Apple Watch Mirroring. It allows users to control Apple Watch using iPhone’s assistive features such as Voice Control and Switch Control, and use inputs including voice commands, sound actions, head tracking, or external Made for iPhone switches as alternatives to tapping the Apple Watch display.

Apple Watch Mirroring uses hardware and software integration, including advances built on AirPlay, to help ensure users who rely on these mobility features can benefit from unique Apple Watch apps like Blood Oxygen, Heart Rate, Mindfulness, and more.2

Additionally, simple hand gestures can be used  to control Apple Watch. The Quick Actions on Apple Watch allows users to answer or end phone call with a double-pinch gesture. It can also be used to take a photo, play or pause media in the Now Playing app, dismiss a notification, and start, pause, or resume a workout.

Live Caption

Those who are hearing impaired or hard of hearing can follow Live Captions on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Users can follow along more easily with any audio content — whether they are on a phone or FaceTime call, using a video conferencing or social media app, streaming media content, or having a conversation with someone next to them. Font size can also be adjusted for ease of hearing.

Live Captions in FaceTime attribute auto-transcribed dialogue to call participants, so group video calls become even more convenient for users with hearing disabilities.

Users have the option to type a response and have it spoken aloud in real time to others who are part of the conversation when Live Captions are used for calls on Mac. Live Captions are generated on device, user information stays private and secure.

VoiceOver adds new languages and more

With more than 20 new languages and locales including Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese, the tech giant is also expanding support for its industry-leading screen reader VoiceOver. These features will be available later this year with software updates across Apple platforms.

Users will also be able to select from dozens of new voices that are optimized for assistive features across languages. Apple has confirmed that the newly added languages, locales, and voices will be part of the Speak Selection and Speak Screen accessibility features.

Additionally, those using VoiceOver on Mac can use the new Text Checker tool to check common formatting issues such as duplicative spaces or misplaced capital letters, which makes proofreading documents or emails even easier

Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of Accessibility Policy and Initiatives said that Apple embeds accessibility into every aspect of its work, and Company is committed to designing the best products and services for everyone.

The new features are combination of innovation and creativity from teams across Apple to give users more options to use our products in ways that best suit their needs and lives.

WhatsApp working on silent group exit feature

WhatsApp, the meta-owned messaging service, is bringing a lot of new updates. Reportedly, the app will soon include a feature that allows members to leave groups quietly. Other group members will not be aware of their departure thanks to this function. As per the information on WABetaInfo, only the members who have left their groups and their group admins will be notified about it. Other group members will not be able to tell whether one of them has left their group after the functionality is implemented. The WABetaInfo also shared a screenshot giving a peek at this latest functionality. The current settings allow all the group members to get a notification when a member leaves the group. WABetaInfo said, “WhatsApp normally adds a system message in the chat to inform all participants that you exited the group: this information will only show up to group admins in the future. Group admins should always be notified about what happens in their groups, so it is needed to show them who exited a group.”

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, observed on May 17 every year, helps raise awareness about the possibilities that the use of information and communication technologies, including the internet, can bring to societies and economies. The day also brings to fore the digital divide – a defining feature of the 21st century – and how it can be bridged.

The day celebrates the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention by the ITU members in 1865. The United Nations decided to mark the day after it was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain, in 1973. The body pioneering this celebration is the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The aim is to foster the idea that government and private agencies can and should do more to help people take advantage of technologies and improve their lives.

The theme for this year’s celebration is – “Digital technologies for older persons and healthy ageing”. The ITU says that the ageing of the global population will be the defining demographic trend of the 21st century. Telecommunications and information communication technologies have a role to play in achieving healthier ageing, according to ITU.

Here’s what Industry has to say:

Arvind Bali, CEO, Telecom Sector Skill Council

“India is at a cusp where possible 5G rollout this year will ensure beginning of endless possibilities in communication services and customer experience. For adopting new tech and infrastructure, skilling along with reskilling/upskilling of the workforce will ensure that the human resource requirement is sufficient when 5G services are live. TSSC along with all stakeholders is already driving training of workforce in new age technologies and has developed NSQF-aligned courses with unified credit framework on 5G technology that will be recognised in universities and institutions to meet this huge upcoming demand in trained talent force when the time comes. We are here to ensure smooth adoption and execution of 5G technologies in India from skill management perspective. ”

Anku Jain, MD, at MediaTek

“Adoption of 5G is the most remarkable technological innovation and societal disruption of this decade. The industry estimates, the adoption of 5G enabled smartphones in India to more than triple in 2022. The telecom industry is gradually entering an era of innovation, technologies like the Internet of Things, 5G, Artificial Intelligence, and AR/VR are transforming connectivity, creating better, more personalised and better experiences for better user experience. MediaTek is focused on R&D in new-age technologies  like AIoT, edge computing, 5G and support the user’s needs in area like connectivity and networking, telemedicine, health-tech and remote education among others.

Telecommunications has played a significant role in connecting and running businesses, societies and government efficiently, as a result we’re able to connect digitally in such difficult times and IT sector has been a great beacon of light, allowing billions of people staying connected with the world, made us realise the importance of telecommunication in our life and has revolutionised the whole world.”

Nokia

“Nokia is working with Indian CSPs for getting their networks ready for 5G and has demonstrated its 5G capabilities in the live trials. As a front runner in the PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme, we are already manufacturing 5G equipment in India at our Chennai factory while our global delivery centres in Noida and Chennai are managing 5G deployments for several global markets. We are all set to support the CSPs unleash the 5G revolution in India.”

Agendra Kumar, MD, Esri India

“The Indian telecom industry is set to make a huge social and economic impact with 5G. 5G technology is expected to contribute $450 billion to the economy between 2023-2040, and the cumulative economic impact of 5G is estimated to be $1 trillion by 2035 itself. To make these numbers a reality, India is expected to have 920 million unique mobile subscribers by 2025, including 88 million 5G connections. However, to realize this vision, ‘fiberization’ of telecom towers should grow from the current level of 30-35% to 70% or more. The network infrastructure also needs to be upgraded and that would require an entirely new orchestration layer to achieve the critical feature of 5G network slicing. Many Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) have moved their core systems to cloud and looking at using technologies like Kubernetes to run their infrastructure with greater flexibility.

GIS will serve as the backbone technology in planning the new network designs, suitable for delivering the next-generation customer experiences. To handle the agility and low latency demands of a 5G network, telecom companies and enterprises will heavily rely on GIS technology. Powered with Esri ArcGIS Utility Network, a Geospatial Infrastructure will play a vital role in helping TSPs in designing and managing their networks, assets and operations in an integrated fashion, and be agile enough to grow as their business requirements change. ArcGIS deployment with Kubernetes can provide them the benefits of streamlined deployment, scalability, lesser infrastructure costs, capacity building for GIS services, and many others.

We also foresee a potential convergence of 5G and GIS. 5G will fuel the adoption of GIS technology as it will enable more efficient spatial data creation and this, in turn, will further increase the deployment of GIS applications across industries including e-Governance, Smart Cities, Climate Change, Disaster Management, Defense, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Healthcare and many more. Both 5G and GIS would complement one another and play a transformational role in the success of Digital India.”

Anuj Mathur, Sr. Director – Engineering, Compass, Inc.

“On World Telecommunication and Information Day, we must acknowledge that it was the pandemic that re-enforced the prominence and relevance of this core sector. It is our telecommunication prowess which empowered us to face the pandemic and emerge as resilient and flexible species capable of overcoming unprecedented calamities. Mobile devices have been leading the telecom revolution and have enabled us to utilize the latest developments in communications thereby making mobile devices as one of the fastest growing devices throughout the history of human life. With the deployment of 5G expected sooner rather than later, the telecommunication and information sector is set to disrupt the world as we know it, causing ripple effects across industries such as real estate, healthcare, finance, and education among others.”
