Blackberry plans to sell patents related to mobile devices for $600 mn: Here’s the reason

0

After shuttering its smartphone services, BlackBerry has finally announced that it will sell its legacy patents that are primarily related to mobile devices, messaging, and wireless networking for $600 million to a special purpose vehicle formed to acquire the company’s patent assets.

According to a Reuters report, the legacy patents will be acquired by Catapult IP Innovations, a special purpose vehicle that was specifically formed for the acquisition. BlackBerry said the transaction with Catapult IP Innovations Inc, will not impact customers’ use of its products or services.

The development comes weeks after BlackBerry pulled the plug on service for its once ubiquitous business smartphones, which were toted by executives, politicians and legions of fans in the early 2000s.

Shares down

As per the report, US-listed shares of BlackBerry were down 3.6% in premarket trading. One of the so-called “meme stocks”, such as GameStop and AMC Entertainment, that witnessed a surge in early 2021, BlackBerry rose 41% last year.

The company will receive $450 million in cash and a promissory note for $150 million at the closing of the deal, said the Reuters report.

BlackBerry was once known for its phones with a tiny QWERTY physical keyboard and the BBM instant messaging service. Its core businesses today are cybersecurity and software used by automakers.

India’s smartphone shipments grew 11% YoY to reach 169 million units in 2021. However, the shipments declined 8% YoY in the December quarter due to supply issues plaguing the smartphone manufacturing ecosystem. Overall India’s smartphone market revenue crossed $38 billion in 2021 with 27% YoY growth.

According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service, Xiaomi led the market with a 24% shipment share. The brand also reached its highest ever share in the premium segment with 258% YoY growth.

Samsung registered its highest ever retail ASP in 2021. The brand led the INR 20,000-INR 45,000 price segment with a 28% share. OnePlus witnessed its highest ever shipments in India in 2021 and led the affordable premium segment INR 30,000-INR 45,000. 5G shipments registered 555% YoY growth in 2021. vivo led the 5G smartphone shipments in 2021 with a 19% share.

Top five brands

Among the top five brands, realme was the fastest growing in 2021 with 20% YoY growth. It also captured the second spot in Q4 2021 for the first time ever. Switching to ‘Unisoc’ to manage component shortages, production expansion through partnerships with EMS, focus on the premium segment with newly launched ‘GT series’ and high demand for its revamped C series and Narzo series favored this high growth for realme. Going forward, realme is aiming to provide 5G in all smartphones priced above INR 15000 (~$200). It also plans to enter the ultra-premium segment.

Samsung remained at the second position in 2021 with an 8% YoY decline in shipments. Supply chain disruptions, absence of new Note series, reduced focus on the entry-level segment and fewer launches in the mid segment compared to the previous year led to an overall decline. However, Samsung was the top brand in 5G smartphone shipments in Q4 2021. Its campaign on providing maximum bands in 5G smartphones facilitated this growth. It also led the INR 20,000-INR 45,000 (~$267-$600) segment with a 28% share. Samsung’s foldable device (Fold and Flip series) shipments grew 388% YoY in 2021.

vivo emerged as the top 5G smartphone brand in 2021 with a 19% share. It grew 2% YoY in 2021 driven by a strong performance of its Y series and V It remains the leading player in the offline segment while simultaneously strengthening its hold in the online segment through its sub-brand iQOO.
OPPO held the fifth position in 2021 with 6% YoY growth. It now has a leaner portfolio in the budget segment as it is focusing on the upper, mid and premium segments. In the premium segment, it was the fastest growing brand in 2021.

Transsion Group brands (itel, Infinix and TECNO) registered 55% YoY growth in 2021 and crossed 10 million shipments for the first time ever in a single year. They also maintained their third position in the overall handset market, with itel being the largest player in the feature phone market. Aggressive launches with a strong value proposition, strong demand in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and hybrid channel strategy were some of the factors behind this growth.

Apple was one of the fastest growing brands in 2021 with 108% YoY growth in shipments. It maintained its lead in the premium segment (>INR 30,000, ~$400) with a 44% share.Aggressive offers during the festive season, strong demand for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 and increased ‘Make in India’ capabilities drove high growth. We expect strong momentum for Apple in 2022 as well with increased manufacturing and retail footprint.
OnePlus reached its highest ever shipments in 2021, crossing the 5-million mark with 59% YoY growth driven by the OnePlus Nord Series. It led the affordable premium segment (INR 30,000-INR 45,000, ~$400-$600).It also captured the second position in the premium segment (>INR 30,000, ~$400) with a 19% share. Camera innovations will be a key focus for OnePlus in 2022.

Mobile handset market

India’s overall mobile handset market grew 7% YoY in 2021. Samsung captured the top position in the handset market in 2021, taking 17% share. Feature phone shipments reached 86 million units to show flat growth in 2021. itel led the feature phone market, taking 24% share followed by Lava, Samsung and Jio. itel has been leading the feature phone market for the last two consecutive years.

Consumer demand

Commenting on the market dynamics, Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh said, “The Indian smartphone market witnessed high consumer demand in 2021, making it the best-performing year. This feat came in a year that witnessed supply constraints due to a multitude of reasons – a second and more virulent Covid-19 wave, global component shortages and price hikes due to these shortages. The high replacement demand fuelled by increasing smartphone affordability in the mid and high-price tiers due to promotions and discounts, as well as better financing options, led to an 11% YoY growth in 2021. The demand outstripped the supply in the last two quarters of 2021. During Q4 2021, the smartphone market declined 8% YoY. We expect the supply situation to get better going forward and reach normalcy by the end of Q1 2022.”

“India’s smartphone market retail ASP (average selling price) grew 14% YoY in 2021 to reach its highest ever at $227. The price hikes in the budget segment due to component price rise, increasing focus of OEMs on the premium segment, and increased demand for mid-range and premium smartphones due to increasing uses and availability of financing options contributed to the increasing ASP. This resulted in the Indian smartphone market revenue crossing $38 billion in 2021, registering a growth of 27% YoY,” said, Research Analyst Shilpi Jain on the competitive landscape and pricing.

On the developing manufacturing ecosystem, Jain added, “Local manufacturing bounced back, contributing 98% shipments in 2021, compared to 90% in 2020. The PLI scheme has been a great booster for the Indian mobile manufacturing ecosystem, attracting top players like Apple and Samsung to increase their ‘Make in India’ footprint and make India their export hub. Therefore, handset exports saw 26% YoY growth in 2021. Seeing the PLI scheme’s success in the mobile manufacturing ecosystem, the government has launched similar schemes for different product verticals like CIOT and IT hardware.”

7 most relevant uses of AI-based smartwatch for a healthy life

0

A smartwatch was considered a fashion statement and a thing for fitness enthusiasts until the onset of the COVID-19. As most watches do, a smartphone tells the time and date along with basic fitness activities. However, with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a smartwatch now comes with a myriad of applications and boasted with advanced features to help the user improve their quality of life.

Today, it has become common to see people wearing a smartwatch as they have become more health-conscious. Smartwatches are a great device that helps people reaches their fitness goals. From aiding in weight loss to monitoring health, smartwatches have become perfect companions to maintaining the quality of life. With technology advancing at a rapid pace, AI-based smartwatches are proving to be beneficial for health.

Monitors heart rate

Heart rate monitoring plays a crucial role in people’s everyday life especially in those who are in sports or exercise regularly. AI-based smartwatches track resting heart rate that is extremely beneficial in knowing how much effort the user is exerting while exercising. Based on the heart rate monitoring, a smartwatch sends the user the notification alarming them whether they need to do more exercises. Smartwatches have proved to be a great way of helping users to avoid injuring themselves.

Tracks exercise and fitness activities

AI-based smartwatches keep a regular track of the user’s progress. When a user exercises or performs any sports or fitness activity, their progress is logged every second that they can review anytime. This helps the user make adjustments to their daily regimen. As a result, the user makes improvements or reduces their effort in the workout/activity as featured on the smartwatch.

Helps to track diet

Another way of reaping the benefit of an AI-based smartwatch is its feature of keeping track of the diet. As people are increasingly becoming diet conscious, they have understood the concept of eating healthy and the importance of maintaining their diet. Whether a user is following a weight loss diet or eating healthy to manage any lifestyle disorder, it is obvious to get distracted. However, an AI-based smartwatch sends notifications to the user and keeps them aligned with their dieting goals. Smartwatches monitor calories and provide other related information for attaining healthy eating habits.

Monitors sleep

Sleep plays an integral role in balancing the body’s important functions and hormones. Before the advent of smartwatches, it was next to impossible to track sleeping habits. With AI-based smartwatches, users can track their sleeping habits and make improvements in their schedules as per their body needs. A smartwatch works intelligently in tracking the number of sleeping hours and logging it for the user to make adjustments. For instance, the smartwatch tracks deep sleep or rapid eye movement and stores the data for users’ assessment and helps them improve their sleeping patterns.

Monitors SpO2 levels

Oxygen is necessary for the body. It needs to be distributed from lungs to body cells for people’s health. During the second wave of COVID-19, oxygen saturation played an important role in determining the patient’s health. Monitoring SpO2 levels became essential and people started to leverage the smartwatch’s capabilities in tracking SpO2 levels. Equipped with the blood oxygen sensor, AI-based smartwatches help in keeping a real-time check on the blood oxygen level for the user that sends a notification when the SpO2 level drops.

Companion for women’s health

In the present world, women have become advocates for their own health. Also, with the emergence of lifestyle disorders such as PCOD and PCOS, women face irregular periods, stress, anxiety, etc. Considering the scenario, many brands of AI-based smartwatches have come up with advanced features of tracking the menstrual health of women. Apart from tracking fitness and health activities, these smartwatches track women’s menstrual cycle and predict their periods, days of ovulation and fertility.

Helps managing stress

An AI-based smartwatch is equipped with advanced features to track stress and anxiety levels. It monitors stress-causing activities i.e. heart rate variability (HRV) to measure the intervals between the heartbeats. When a user’s HRV drops, the smartwatch immediately alarms the user to take steps to relieve the stress. In addition, the smartwatch provides the user with suggestions to follow certain breathing and meditation techniques to recover from a stressful event that further reduces the chances of developing anxiety or panic attacks.

Bottomline

Smartwatch has become an integral part of human life. With technological advancements, most of the brands are embedding new-age tools that improve the effectiveness of the smartwatch for a healthy life. It is also predicted that AI will help smartwatches to intelligently detect the users’ bad sitting or resting posture and notify them to enhance their physical health along with emotional and mental wellbeing.

Truke Air Buds Lite and BTG 3 Review: Simply outstanding and punches above their weight

0
Truke-Air-Buds-Lite

Emerging wearable audio brand Truke recently expanded its product line-up with the launch of Air Buds Lite and BTG 3 TWS earbuds in India. Priced affordably at Rs 1,399, both the new products come with similar features but different designs, and cater to two different consumers segments. The Truke Air Buds Lite is available in Black and Blue colour options, whereas the BTG 3 comes in Black and Red colours. Although these earbuds look superb on paper, especially in terms of features; it’s time to put them to the test. Read on to find out where they stand on different parameters of excellence.

Build and Design

We had Air Buds Lite in Black colour and BTG 3 in Red shade for review. They offer a striking design but are different in terms of exterior and looks. While the former comes in a rectangular-shaped charging case with curved edges, the latter sports a pebble-like case. The Truke BTG 3, in particular, has got a groovier design sporting a Spiderman-like look at the front with LED indicators that glow in different colours, which is enough to demonstrate that it’s aimed at gamers. The Air Buds Lite, on the other hand, features a toned-down matte finish. Both the products are tiny in size and slip easily into your jeans pocket.

In terms of build quality, both these earbuds consist of a high-quality plastic materials. The lid will not let you down as it offers a satisfying experience when you open and close it. The earbuds sport a standard design with a 45-degree angle for a better fit in the ears. Besides, you get a short stem that looks nice and is comfortable to your ears. These TWS devices are reasonably lightweight and will not cause any sort of irritation even while wearing them for long hours. There is a USB Type-C port to charge these earbuds at the bottom of the case. Interestingly, both these earbuds come with an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance, which indeed matters a lot in a country like India, where you cannot ignore the harsh weather conditions.

Taken as a whole, both these earbuds offer a decent look with traditional feel and impressive build quality. They are extraordinary at the given price.

Functionalities

Both the Truke Air Buds Lite and BTG 3 TWS earbuds easily get connected to your smartphone. The pairing is done via Bluetooth 5.1, which ensures that there is a strong and reliable connection between the smartphone and the earbuds. Once you pull out the earbuds from the case, it will be turned on and putting it back will shut down the earbuds. They offer a good range and clear audio, and I hardly experienced any distortion in sound even away from the source in the next room.

The touch sensors on these devices work seamlessly, ensuring real-time play and pause. Having no option to adjust the volume via the earbuds is a shortcoming with these products. Appreciatively, the in-ear detection works well and one can activate it by tapping thrice on the left earbud. Besides, there is a High-Precision Contact Sensor that detects the wearing status of the device and automatically plays the music once the buds are in the ear canals.

Performance

When it comes to the performance of an audio device, looks hardly matter. Here, only audio output happens to be the key. The Truke Air Buds Lite and BTG 3 earbuds house 10mm audio driver, which delivers a tempting audio performance. They support low latency of 55ms and produce a balanced audio output that is neither too loud nor too low. Sometimes, even 30 per cent of volume was sufficient, while using the device.

Besides, these earbuds offer AI-powered Deep Neural Network Call Noise Cancellation technology, which ensures improved noise cancellation. You’ll enjoy listening to your favourite music and watching movies without worrying about the ambiance noise around. There was punchy bass with deep and rich sound quality. In terms of call quality, the audio was crisp and clear and I didn’t experience any sort of problem outdoors.

There is a specialised gaming mode in these devices, which offer a best-in-class gaming experience, thanks to the low latency feature they come with. In addition, these earbuds are super-charged with Empirical Technology that promises 2X energy efficiency, 2X transmission speed, and 1.8X reliable connection.

Battery

The best part with Truke devices is that they come with a very strong battery life. The buds offer 10 hours of playtime on a single charge, with an additional 38 hours with a 300mAh charging case, packing in a total of 48 hours of playtime. These earbuds can be fully charged in around two hours.

Conclusion

What do you expect from a device with its price as low as Rs 1,399? These earbuds are simply outstanding, thanks to the impressive features they come with such as decent design, punchy bass, AI-powered noise cancellation, and specialised gaming mode. It’s up to you to decide which one to purchase depending upon your need – such as Air Buds Lite is sophisticated enough to be used daily, whereas BTG 3 will give you a sporty feeling.
