Android Lock Screen Vulnerability Could Give Attackers Complete Access to Your Phone — What To Do?

0
Android Lock Screen Vulnerability

What if we tell you that the screen lock of your Android smartphone can be easily bypassed to leave your smartphone vulnerable to attackers? This is actually true and Google has Hungry-based cybersecurity expert David Schütz to thank for bringing this software bug to their attention. The bug, as stated by Google and Schütz, has now been fixed in the Google security update of November 5, 2022.

Tech researcher David Schütz revealed in his blog post that he was able to detect a vulnerability affecting all Google pixel smartphones that made it possible for any attacker to easily unlock the screen lock without knowing the passcode. Schütz claimed that the bug might not be limited to Pixel smartphones and there is a chance other Android devices also carry a similar software flaw.

In the blog post, Schütz divulged the details of his research process and mentioned, “The issue allowed an attacker with physical access to bypass the lock screen protections (fingerprint, PIN, etc.) and gain complete access to the user’s device. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2022-20465 and it might affect other Android vendors as well. You can find my patch advisory and the raw bug report I have sent to Google at feed.bugs.xdavidhu.me.”

Android Lock Screen Vulnerability

Most Android smartphones have a screen lock that allows smartphone users to set up a passcode, either numerical or a pattern, that locks the screen. Screen locks these days also have a form of face print or fingerprint. However, numerical passcode screen locks are probably the most common and widely used across the world. There is also a separate lock functionality for the SIM card inside the smartphone. This ensures that no one would be able to eject or physically take out the SIM card from the smartphone as long as the SIM is locked. This is often a numerical PIN lock. These SIM cards also have another personal lock unlock code that is used at times when a wrong PIN is entered consecutively three times on the smartphone.

It is also revealed that for the attackers to work around the bug, the smartphone must be at least once unlocked after the last time it was restarted. The bug can pose a threat of exploiting any Android device with a physical SIM slot. The research details, however, did not make it clear whether smartphones with eSIM also pose similar vulnerabilities.

Google has reportedly paid $70,000 to Schütz for finding out and reporting the Android smartphone bug privately to the company. The company is calling it “accidental” security but, which has now been fixed. Android smartphone users are now advised to update and install the security update in order to ensure that devices are shielded from the lock screen vulnerability.

According to one of the reports published in the media, the bug only affected devices running on Android 10 or later versions. Although Schütz’s blog post doesn’t mention any specific smartphone models except that the bug was found in Google Pixel phones, it is widely reported in the media that only Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 5 were compromised.

Schütz, in his blog post, reveals that Google informed him that his private report about the lock screen bug wasn’t the first time. Google had also received another report about the issue and Schütz’s research result was a duplicate report for them. However, Google still rewarded Schütz because it was only after his report that the company started to work on the fix.

2022 has anyhow been a good year for devices as all tech giants have contributed with something new although Apple and Google took the limelight with the launch of iPhone 14 series and Pixel 7 series smartphones, respectively.

Foxconn is the largest supplier for Apple that is planning to quadruple the company’s workforce in India by hiring around 55,000 workers because it wants to diversify the country’s supply chain as far as possible.

Foxconn has its own iPhone factory in India due to which it hopes to increase the supply chain by two years after the disruption of supply chain in neighboring China, which is why it wants to manage its Indian operations as early as possible.

The supplier has a Zhengzhou plant that is the largest iPhone factory in China that is facing disruptions in production due to which concerns are being raised, while China imposing Covid-19 restrictions on the supply chains globally is only adding to the woes as the plant has more than 200,000 workers.

Luckily, Foxconn has an Indian manufacturing unit based in Tamil Nadu where it plans to move its iPhone production, which is why it plans to hire around 55,000 workers, thereby taking the tally to 75,000 in the next two years.

It isn’t that Foxconn is limited to Apple alone as it also manufactures battery-related products for a number of tech companies that have a global presence, but as of now it is concentrating on driving iPhone productions in India as it is in talks with Tamil Nadu officials about boosting its hiring efforts.

Elon Musk Disables Twitter SMS 2FA Microservice; Details Inside

  • Elon Musk Does It Again
  • Authenticator App
  • Twitter SMS 2FA

In Brief

The Twitter-Elon Musk war has been a matter of interesting debate since the past many months ever since the billionaire Tesla CEO had proposed to buy Twitter for a jaw dropping $44 billion and later backed out, prompting Twitter shareholders to file a court case against him.

Now it has been more than three weeks since Musk has taken over the renowned social media platform all to himself, following which so many things have happened for which there are reasons galore like checkmarks, exiting advertisers, gray checkmarks, among others.

There has been an interesting development over the issue in the past few hours that we are going to discuss about below as users need to be aware about it, especially if they’re on Twitter.

Elon Musk also tweeted on his official Twitter handle that he is shutting down microservices on Twitter that he has termed ‘bloatware’ and less than 20% are necessary for Twitter to function properly, which he has also made clear to the authorities.

The problem is that Twitter SMS 2FA is also a part of those microservices, which is SMS two-factor authentication when expanded, used when a web app texts users a one-time passcode to prove his/her identity for which they have to give their mobile number as part of the registration process.

Upon logging in, users get a text with a temporary six-digit code that they have to enter into the app to get an extra security layer on top of the username/password combo.

This creates a huge problem for Twitter users that have SMS 2FA feature turned on and if they log out of their account, the two-factor authentication will not be broken, but they won’t be getting the text message with the code, due to which they cannot log back in again as it doesn’t send, being turned off.

The service is now coming back up again as users that couldn’t use SMS 2FA can do it again from now on as makers have tested the service and concluded that it is working perfectly, although not for all users as many of them have complained that they’re still facing issues.

A protocol has been triggered due to which users will not be able to send SMS codes for 24 hours and will be locked out of their account for the time period, which is why makers are advising users to change 2FA method from SMS to something new.

Twitter SMS 2FA

Conclusion

In order to prevent your Twitter account from being locked, you have to turn off the Twitter SMS 2FA method service by first going to ‘Settings & Support’, then ‘Settings and Privacy’, and then ‘Security and amounts access’ where you click ‘Security’.

Then go to ‘Two factor authentication’, you hit the same link, following which you turn off the ‘Text message’ toggle.

Samsung Exynos Gets New SoCs; Details Inside

SAMSUNG EXYNOS
SAMSUNG EXYNOS

Brief Summary

Samsung has released a slew of devices this year that have been received well by one and all but it seems that the South Korean tech giant has many other ones lined up for release.

It is well known that Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is going to be launched in early 2023 that has left many users excited as to what they can expect of it when it comes out finally.

Now there is a strong debate regarding the variant of the upcoming device because earlier there was a buzz that S23 Ultra will go all-Snapdragon but later on, Samsung abandoned the idea of splitting its flagship line between two variants- Snapdragon and Exynos.

Exynos 2200’s performance has been far from satisfactory in 2022 due to which Samsung had no choice but to shift to more Snapdragon variants but for the upcoming S23 model, it will go for only Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, although the chipset division will remain unchanged.

The latest news is that the new pair of chipsets have been certified with Bluetooth SIG because Samsung has long harboured an ambition to be far ahead of its rivals in the mobile chipset segment.

It is the Exynos chips that have been certified as Samsung wants to push the Exynos gang forward with two of them, Samsung Exynos 1330 and 1380 chips that are in talks for the mid-range lineup.

Apparently, both chipsets will feature in Galaxy A-series while the Bluetooth compatibility for both models has been officially confirmed via the Bluetooth SIG for both SoCs, which is touted to be a step in the right direction.

Samsung Exynos

Conclusion

Samsung Exynos 1380 will succeed Samsung Exynos 1280 as there are strong rumours that it packs 2 x ARM Cortex-A CPU cores, along with the Mali-G615 GPU and a 5G integrated modem that will provide support for mmWave and sub-GHz connectivity.

Samsung 1330 will be for the low-range spectrum models that will be modest in the category that has been occupied by the old Exynos 850, which came out in 2020 and was used for a slew of devices.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Vs Pixel 7 Pro: Which One Offers The Best Battery Life?

0
iPhone 14 Pro Max Vs Pixel 7 Pro

The iPhone 14 Pro Max and Google Pixel 7 Pro are arguably two of the best smartphones available in the market at the moment. Recently, a famous YouTube tech blogger tried to put both these smartphones to some tests in order to understand which one of these carries a better life. Before we move on to the results, let’s acknowledge the significance of a good battery in a smartphone. When we consider smartphone performance, among all other specifications such as a decent camera setup and powerful processor, the one aspect that really makes a whole lot of difference is good battery life. Any smartphone with a subpar battery would never be able to provide a good smartphone experience no matter how well designed and developed it is otherwise.

Although the specification sheets of both smartphones would give a picture that Google Pixel 7 Pro with its 5000 mAh capacity would overpower a smaller 4323 mAh capacity iPhone 14 Pro Max, it appears the results are telling a different story altogether.

The first thing to understand is that both smartphones, iPhone 14 Pro Max and Google Pixel 7 Pro, have different technical anatomy and that in itself will always have a different impact on how much battery is consumed in performing even the simplest of tasks. While both smartphones have been packaged with 6.7 inch displays coupled with almost similar resolutions and slightly variable refresh rates, it turns out the chipset created most of the difference in how the battery functions. Google’s custom-made Tensor G2 chip when paired with the Android 13 doesn’t make as powerful a combination as Apple’s custom A16 Bionic coupled with iOS 16.1. The combination of chip and operating system in Pixel 7 Pro consumes battery much faster when compared to the iPhone variant even when the battery capacity is much smaller in Apple.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Vs Pixel 7 Pro

The tech blogger conducting the tests has claimed to perform as many as 11 different function tests on both smartphones and at every test iPhone 14 Pro Max performed better in terms of battery consumption.

The tech blogger also claimed that at the end of all the functional tests, iPhone 14 Pro Max was still showing a highly impressive 21% battery remaining. In contrast, the Google Pixel 7 Pro’s battery had already died performing the same functions. This result would mean at the very least 3.5 extra hours of messaging left in iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Other results that were highlighted after the tests include a comparison of the usage time of both devices. And here too, iPhone 14 Pro Max came out as a clear winner when compared to the Pixel 7 Pro.

iPhone 14 Pro Max usage time as per the endurance test results showed 11 hours 44 minutes of active battery life along with a 16 hours standby time for a combined total of at least 27 hours and 44 minutes.

As for the Google Pixel 7 Pro, the test results displayed a comparatively lower active battery life of 9 hours and 41 minutes along with 16 hours of standby time for a combined total of 25 hours and 41 minutes.
