Advocacy group urges Facebook CEO to cancel plans to launch Instagram for kids

0

Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC), an advocacy group, has reportedly urged Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to not create a version of photo-sharing app Instagram for children who are under 13, as it would put them at great risk.

According to news agency Reuters, the CCFC letter to the Facebook boss comes at a time when the social media major has been criticized for amplifying misinformation globally across its platforms, while also exposing children to inappropriate material.

CCFC said that Instagram exploits youngsters’ fear of missing out as they constantly check their devices seeking approval and uploading pictures. He said that the platform’s continuous focus on appearance and self presentation would be a challenge to adolescents’ privacy and wellbeing.

The letter said, “While collecting valuable family data and cultivating a new generation of Instagram users may be good for Facebook’s bottom line, it will likely increase the use of Instagram by young children who are particularly vulnerable to the platform’s manipulative and exploitative features.”

The advocacy group believes that child-targeted marketing, along with the excessive screen time it encourages, will damage kids’ healthy development, and is dedicated to ending marketing to children.

Truecaller brings in enterprise solutions for businesses

0

Telephone search engine and caller ID service Truecaller has introduced brand identity solutions as its premier enterprise offering that allows businesses to verify their identity which increases consumer safety by preventing fraud and scam calls. Businesses can drive efficiency in their communications while improving call-pickup rates for genuine and important calls, said Truecaller in a statement.

With frauds and scams using spoofed identities on the rise across the world, there is a dire need to bring in more trust in communications. Apart from the green Caller ID and green Verified Business badge, a verified business on Truecaller gets a verified tick mark icon and can lock their brand name and profile photo. This lets consumers know exactly which calls to trust. Importantly, consumers will continue to see the number of spam markings as usual and they retain the right to mark verified numbers as spam or block them completely. “To reiterate, our spam algorithms continue to work in the same way and the Truecaller global community of over 270 million active users will be able to mark calls that are potentially spam/scam/sales calls, even if they have a verified badge and Caller ID,” it said.

Truecaller Enterprise Highlights:

  • Truecaller will help businesses in bringing more trust and efficiency in their communication with the users
  • Green Caller ID, green verified badge, accurate name & logo and the verified tick mark has been proven to deliver significantly better call-pick-up rates in beta trials
  • This feature will be available by default to over 270 million Truecaller users globally – on both Android as well as iOS devices

Apart from adding trust and reducing the possibility of fraud, a Verified Business badge can be a big boon for startups and businesses who are brand conscious and want to accurately present the name of their entity, logo and make them tamper proof. Over 150 businesses signed up for the program during the early access phase and have found the service to provide significant improvement in the efficiency of the calls they make to their users. “Truecaller is ready to scale the offering to a significant number of businesses globally ensuring that the ever growing community of users can trust more calls coming from these businesses making communication safer for everyone,” it stated.

Sony Joy, VP and Head of Truecaller Enterprise, said, “Truecaller Enterprise has been set up with the strong intent of building solutions for businesses that will not just improve the efficiency of their communication but also provide significant value and safety to consumers in their day-to-day lives. Our robust verification process helps consumers identify calls that can be 100% trusted to be initiated by a particular business. Over a period of time, this can result in drastic reduction of frauds and scams that happen over phone calls.”

“With Truecaller Business Identity, our delivery partners have seen a 11% improvement in phone calls getting picked up by our customers during order fulfillment, thus helping optimize our process and saving time during each delivery,” said Brijesh Bharadwaj, Director of Product at Dunzo – India’s leading delivery app (Dunzo is an early access partner for Truecaller Enterprise).

COVID-19 Vaccination: Tower body calls for giving priority to field staff

0

The Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) has requested the National Health Authority (NHA) to include telecom infrastructure personnel under ‘frontline worker’ status for administering the COVID-19 vaccine on priority.

The development comes at a time when the entire nation is battling the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, which is relatively severe than the first wave of infection and has prompted states to impose strict curbs, including partial and full lockdowns to control the spread.

In a letter to R.S. Sharma, CEO, National Health Authority, T.R. Dua, Director-General, TAIPA, said, “The frontline workers in the telecom infrastructure industry, consisting of direct and indirect employees have ensured continuity of routine activities – power, diesel filling and attended to routine maintenance/ emergency faults – risking their own lives. They have been working in the toughest of times across all types of zones including the COVID-19 hotspots and therefore need to be considered for vaccination on priority.”

The apex telecom tower body, which represents companies like Indus Towers, ATC, Sterlite Technologies, among others, highlighted telecom infrastructure providers are maintaining services on a regular basis despite the serious risks posed to them and their families. “It is essential that they are given priority irrespective of their age group, for administering the COVID-19 prevention vaccine in all the states.”

Highlighting the role of telecom infrastructure workers, Dua said, “The telecom infrastructure provider industry has huge manpower consisting of frontline workers (technicians and field engineers) who have been working tirelessly during lockdowns to maintain the 24×7 telecom services to enable uninterrupted Work-From-Home, online education, e-health, and various Governmental services to the citizens across the country.”

Airtel comes up with new corporate structure to sharpen focus on digital

0

Telecom major Airtel has introduced a new corporate structure, which is expected to sharpen the focus of the company in driving the rapidly unfolding digital opportunity in India while enabling it to unlock value.

The new structure envisages Airtel Digital Limited folding into the listed entity, Bharti Airtel. This will now house all of the digital assets spanning Wynk Music, Airtel X stream, Airtel Thanks, Mitra Payments platform used by a million retailers, Airtel Ads, Airtel IQ, Airtel Secure, Airtel Cloud and all future digital products and services.

The digital ambition of Bharti Airtel is closely intertwined with the spine that connectivity provides across the country. It is therefore intended to house all the telecom businesses in a newly-created entity, Airtel Limited – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bharti Airtel.

Bharti Telemedia, the 100% arm operating DTH services will sit alongside Airtel Limited for now. It is intended to eventually fold the DTH business into Airtel Limited to move towards the NDCP vision of converged services to customers. The company has moved the government to seek clarity on licensing policy given that carriage i.e. telecom and DTH is currently being regulated and managed under two separate ministries of Communications and I&B respectively.

Airtel Payments Bank will remain a separate entity under Bharti Airtel and work closely with the growing customer base to play a pivotal role in realising the digital opportunity that payments and financial services provide.

All of the company’s infrastructure businesses such as Nxtra and Indus Towers will continue to remain in separate entities as they are currently. So will international subsidiaries and affiliates.

The Board in its meeting held yesterday approved the scheme enabling the company to file for all statutory approvals to give effect to the proposed rearrangement.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Airtel, said, “The new structure sets the exciting future course for Bharti Airtel and provides focus on the four distinct businesses – Digital, India, International and Infrastructure, each, in a razor sharp way. We believe this will provide agility, expertise and operational rigour to serve our customers brilliantly while providing flexibility to unlock value for our shareholders. This structure will serve us well over the coming years and is a win-win for all stakeholders.”
