Highlights

  • iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max see a drop in 5/5 star ratings.
  • Standard iPhone 15 models enjoy rising customer approval.
  • Overheating issue impacts early iPhone 15 series reviews.
  • iPhone 15 Pro records lowest popularity among Pro models in customer satisfaction.

If reports are to be believed the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have seen a notable dip in customer approval ratings.

This information comes courtesy of the latest data from PerfectRec, a product recommendation site that scrapes through reviews on Amazon, Google, and more.

This development, if true, looks to be at odds with traditionally high ratings associated with Apple’s Pro models, underscoring a changing landscape in consumer sentiment towards high-end smartphones.

The analysis, drawn from an extensive pool of nearly 700,000 user-generated Google reviews shows that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models have witnessed a decline in 5/5 star ratings.

Key Findings

iPhone 15 Pro Models Key Findings
  • A Downward Trend for Pro Models: The iPhone 15 Pro’s customer satisfaction plummeted from 73.5% to 66.1%, while the Pro Max version slid from 77% to 72.5% in terms of receiving 5/5 stars.
This indicates a significant shift in consumer approval away from Apple’s flagship offerings.
  • Rising Approval for Standard Models: In contrast, the iPhone 15 witnessed an increase in 5/5 star ratings, soaring from 68.2% to 78.1%.
Similarly, the iPhone 15 Plus jumped from 70% to 73.5%, signaling a growing consumer preference for these models.
  • The Overheating Issue: An early snag in the form of an overheating issue, later rectified by the iOS 17.0.3 update, tarnished the initial reception of the iPhone 15 series, contributing to 15% of all negative reviews in October. This incident likely played a role in shaping early consumer feedback.
  • A Historical Low for the Pro Model: The iPhone 15 Pro has earned the dubious distinction of being the least popular Pro model ever in terms of customer satisfaction, with a decrease in 5-star ratings from an initial 72% to 68%.

FAQs

Why have the iPhone 15 Pro models seen a decline in customer satisfaction?

The decline in customer satisfaction for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models is attributed to factors such as early technical issues, including an overheating problem, and possibly a changing consumer preference towards value and affordability.

How does the satisfaction of iPhone 15 and 15 Plus compare to the Pro models?

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models have witnessed an increase in customer satisfaction, with higher 5/5 star ratings, suggesting that consumers may be favoring these more affordable options over the Pro models.

What was the impact of the overheating issue on the iPhone 15 series?

The overheating issue, identified early in the iPhone 15 series’ lifecycle, was linked to 15% of all negative reviews in October, significantly affecting initial consumer perceptions until resolved by the iOS 17.0.3 update.

Has the iPhone 15 Pro become the least popular Pro model ever?

Yes, the iPhone 15 Pro has been noted as the least popular Pro model in terms of customer satisfaction, marking a historical low for Apple’s flagship offerings.

What do the changing trends in iPhone 15 model satisfaction imply for Apple?

The shifting consumer satisfaction trends suggest that Apple may need to reevaluate its strategy, focusing more on delivering value and addressing quality concerns to meet evolving consumer preferences and maintain its market position.

Did iPhone 15 Pro customer satisfaction drops over battery life disappointment ? iPhone 15 taken the lead ?

Data from PerfectRec show ratings from owners of the 15 Pro ranked below iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro.

Now the latest report shows iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max customer satisfaction has continued to decline while iPhone 15 and 15 Plus satisfaction has surpassed the high-end models.

The last report from PerfectRec was made up of almost 700,000 user-generated Google reviews and the new data likely exceeds that.

Continuing with the same methodology, PerfectRec measured what percentage of iPhone 15/Pro user reviews received 5/5 stars.

Interestingly, the two Pro models saw a decline since September when early adopters picked up the high-end smartphones. And the more affordable iPhone 15 and 15 Plus saw an increase in customer satisfaction. Usually, the pro models have higher ratings than the base variants but not this time around.

After starting at 73.5% in September, 66.1% of iPhone 15 Pro reviews now give 5/5 stars. And for iPhone 15 Pro Max, that went from 77% to 72.5%.

In contrast, iPhone 15 went from 68.2% to 78.1% and the 15 Plus jumped from 70% to 73.5% for 5/5 star ratings.

What are the three complaints seen with iPhone 15 pro ?

The iPhone 15 devices saw an overheating issue for a few weeks after launch which was fixed with the iOS 17.0.3 update. That certainly caused some disappointment among early buyers and that showed up in “15% of all negative reviews” in October.

But PerfectRec says that in the last 30 days, the top three complaints about iPhone 15 Pro have been:

Poor battery life

Incremental upgrades from iPhone 14 Pro
Disappointment about the physical design and protruding camera lenses

Did iPhone 15 Pro ratings drop below iPhone 14 and 13 Pro, according to 700k reviews ?

Back in May last year,a study from PerfectRec showed the iPhone 14 lineup including the 14 Pro saw a notable drop in the percentage of 5-star reviews. Now the firm’s latest study shows another drop for the iPhone 15 Pro.

The latest study from PerfectRec is made up of 695,000 user-generated Google reviews for the iPhone 15 devices. While the data naturally includes some erroneous or extreme reviews, with a sample size this big, it likely gives a good idea of customer sentiment.

Apple again said during its fiscal Q3 earnings call that a study from 451 Research found iPhone 14 family satisfaction to be at 98%. We’ll likely hear next month what the initial satisfaction number Apple shares for the iPhone 15 lineup.

As was the case back in May (and for years), the user-generated reviews that this new study collected tell a different story. Though it is important to note they are comparing two different, yet closely related metrics.

After the iPhone 14 Pro saw an 8% drop in the number of 5-star reviews compared to the 13 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro dropped to a new low of 72% being 5-star reviews just over a month since its launch.

In a flip from last year, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus were rated at 5 stars in 76 and 74% of reviews, respectively.

When considering factors that could explain the YoY declining trend, PerfectRec’s Wally Nowinski believes one aspect could be early adopters have higher expectations.

We theorize that there is a bit of a gap between how early adopters view a product and how it is received by more typical consumers. The people who order an iPhone on launch day might have higher expectations and be more easily disappointed than those who purchase later in the year.

Nowinski highlights the ratings may change over time, so we’ll keep an eye out for future studies on the 5-star percentage of the iPhone 15 devices.

Earlier this month we saw a report that consumers in China were not as interested in the iPhone 15 devices as they were in iPhone 14.

Why is the iPhone 15 series overheating?

Apple has identified that the new devices run hotter during the initial setup process and pointed out specific third-party apps like Asphalt 9, Uber, and Instagram as contributors to the issue.

What is causing the faster-than-expected battery drain on iPhone 15 and 15 Pro?

High battery usage can occur when restoring the device from a backup, downloading large media libraries, and using apps with high background activity.

What is Apple doing to address these issues?

Apple is set to release an update, possibly iOS 17.0.3, to resolve the overheating problems. The company is also collaborating with third-party app developers to fix app-related issues.

How can users mitigate these issues before the software update?

Users can monitor app battery usage, activate low power mode, manage background app refresh settings, and fine-tune location services to mitigate problems.

What Drives Battery Consumption?

Restoring a device from a backup can initially cause high battery usage.
Downloading a large library of photos or videos can drain the battery significantly.
Your device may generate extra heat and therefore consume more battery during the restoration process.

Apps with continuous location tracking and high background activity can be significant battery hogs.

Your enthusiasm to explore the new features on your iPhone 15 may result in higher battery consumption initially.

How to Alleviate Overheating Issues?

Limit your use of Uber and Asphalt 9 until updates are made available that address the issue.

Ensure Instagram is updated to its latest version, which was released on September 26 and reportedly fixes the problem.

If you encounter overheating while using other apps, consider halting their use or updating them to the latest versions.

Apple has signaled that a forthcoming iOS release, possibly version 17.0.3 (release date unconfirmed), will offer a comprehensive solution to the overheating issue.

Nothing has just dropped exciting news for fans and tech enthusiasts alike.

They’re gearing up to launch the Nothing Phone 2a, a device that the company claims will bring the signature flair and features of Nothing at a more accessible price point.

This announcement came through a community update video posted on X and succeeds a lot of speculation surrounding the device over the past month or so.

Nothing Phone 2(a): Details and What to Expect

Diving deeper into the details, it’s clear that Nothing isn’t just aiming to expand its product lineup; they’re responding directly to the community’s call.

According to Nothing’s co-founder, Akis Evangelidis, “With Phone 2a, we’ve really doubled down on the core user needs — performance, camera, you name it. And it’s also kind of leveraging some of the most loved features of (the) Phone 2 while ensuring it delivers a clear upgrade compared to Phone 1 on every single front.”

From Evangelidis’s comments, we can guess that the Phone 2a is set to embody an optimal balance of performance, camera capabilities, and beloved traits from its predecessor, the Phone 2, all while marking a significant leap from the original Phone 1.

Leaks and rumours have been swirling around the Phone 2a, suggesting it will pack a Dimensity 7200 chipset and come in two variants: 8GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB.

A 120Hz OLED display and a potential dual 50MP rear camera setup are also on the cards, hinting at a device that doesn’t skimp on specs despite its friendlier price tag.

But there’s more on the horizon from Nothing.

Alongside the Phone 2a, the company teased the upcoming release of new earbuds and a so-called Neckband Pro, expanding its ecosystem of tech products.

With the Mobile World Congress (MWC) just around the corner, speculation is rife that the Nothing Phone 2a could make its debut at the global tech showcase.

This timing would align perfectly with Nothing’s teaser of “coming soon,” setting the stage for a significant reveal.

Adding an extra layer of excitement, renowned leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer shared wallpapers allegedly from the Phone 2a, offering a sneak peek into the device’s aesthetic.

We have, of course, seen some potential renders of the phone that have given us a bit of an idea of what to expect, but these wallpapers do add to the excitement.

If you want to download these wallpapers, Android Police have them uploaded on a Google Drive.

Tecno Spark 20: Design and Display

Tecno Spark 20: Design

The Tecno Spark 20 has a standard budget design with a plastic build with a textured back panel which is both modern and trendy.

It has glossy rails that catch a lot of smudges and fingerprints.

The camera island is reminiscent of previous Tecno phones but I do like the appeal this setup brings.

I also like the phone’s lightweight yet rigid build that pushes the idea of being structurally sound while also being portable.

The device also sports a 6.56-inch HD+ Dot-in Display, boasting a 90Hz refresh rate, IP53 resistance, and a maximum brightness of 480 nits.

This, coupled with Panda Screen Protection, technically ensures an extended amount of durability along with a pleasant visual experience.

I should also mention that the device will also come with OTT play premium subscription worth Rs 4897.

I did watch a few movies and videos on the phone and for a budget phone, there really is no downside to the viewing experience.

Tecno Spark 20: Cameras

Tecno Spark 20: Cameras

The Tecno Spark 20’s photography capabilities are anchored by a 50MP primary shooter and a secondary depth sensor, alongside a 32MP front camera for selfies, marking an upgrade from its predecessor.

This setup, with features like Ring-LED flash, HDR, and panorama, enables 1080p video capture at 30fps.

Daylight captures showcase decent dynamic range and exposure, though the camera sometimes struggles with slow focusing and shutter responsiveness.

In contrast, low-light conditions reveal the camera’s limitations, where utilizing the flash can significantly improve photo quality.

The 32MP selfie camera, while not groundbreaking, offers satisfactory performance for video calls and selfies under good lighting, providing value that aligns with its pricing tier. Videos can be shot on the device at 1080p @ 30fps which is good enough.

Tecno Spark 20: Performance and Features

Under the hood, the Tecno Spark 20 is powered by a Helio G85 Octa-Core processor, complemented by 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and an additional 8GB Mem Fusion RAM, totaling 16GB.

This setup is paired with a whopping 256GB internal storage, expandable up to 1TB.

The internal storage is the highest in the segment and is a marquee feature of the handset.

The performance of the device is adequate again, nothing out of the ordinary but I can tell you that running very intensive games on the device is not a good idea although the device does hold the fort in terms of CPU Throttling.

The Tecno Spark 20 features a multi-card slot for dual 4G nano SIMs and a dedicated SD card, along with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for enhanced security.

The inclusion of dual stereo speakers powered by DTS enhances the audio experience, offering up to 400% more sound.

The device runs on HiOS 13.5 based on Android 13, ensuring a relatively smooth and responsive user experience.

There does seem to be a slight focus on the reduction of bloatware but you will find some essentials in the pre-installed apps such as the entire suite of Google’s productivity tools, which I appreciate.

The rest of the skin is pretty much what you can expect on any other Tecno phone.

Finally, the Spark 20 is equipped with a 5000mAh Li-Polymer battery, supported by an 18W Flash Charger capable of charging 50% in just 43 minutes.

In my time testing the phone, I got about 6-7 hours of screen-on time, which is what I have come to expect in most phones with the advertised battery capacity.

What makes Circle to Search different from traditional search methods?

Circle to Search integrates deeply into the operating system, offering a seamless and efficient search experience that allows users to access Google’s search engine directly from any app, without needing to pause their current activity.

5 ways to use Circle to Search. Details?

Circle to Search is rolling out on Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 series. Now you can search anything with a simple gesture — like circling, highlighting, scribbling or tapping — without switching apps.

Shop what you see

Circle to Search can help you discover more about items you see, and shop for them whenever and wherever inspiration strikes.

So if you see someone wearing a unique, patterned top or spot a beautifully designed rotating cake stand online, long press the home button or navigation bar, and circle or scribble the items you’re interested in.

From there, you can shop the same or similar options from retailers across the web.

Look up a word or phrase

With Circle to Search, it’s easy to look up definitions of words or phrases. Say you’re watching a video featuring a drink with the word “prebiotic” on it, but you aren’t quite sure what that means — or how it’s different from “probiotic.”

Usually, you would have to leave where you are and search for the word. Now, just long press the home button or navigation bar to activate Circle to Search and highlight “prebiotic” to learn more about it. When you’re done, just swipe away and resume the video.

Get travel inspiration

Circle to Search can even give you ideas for your next trip. Maybe you come across a video or social media post of someone exploring a city, and you spot a uniquely designed building.

Previously, you might have taken a screenshot and switched apps to search it, typed out a description or scrolled through the comments to try and find out what it was. With Circle to Search, simply scribble over the building to quickly identify it (and maybe add it to your own travel itinerary).

Compare options

Now you can easily compare options without leaving your screen. Say you’re texting with friends to decide where to eat. They send you two different restaurant options, but you’re not familiar with either.

Instead of switching between your text thread and an app to look them up, long press the home button or navigation bar and highlight one of the restaurant’s names. Without leaving your messaging app, you’ll see the restaurant’s menu, photos of popular dishes, customer reviews and its location.

Once you’ve looked at both options, just swipe away and let the group know which spot you’re craving.

Ask more complex questions

Circle to Search not only gives you quick information, it can give you AI-powered overviews (available in select countries).

Let’s say you’ve come across several social media posts with interesting-looking corn dogs, and you want to know why these delicious treats are trending. You can use Circle to Search to look them up and ask a more nuanced question, like “Why are these so popular?”

You’ll quickly learn that these are Korean corn dogs and understand why they’re trending through helpful information that’s pulled together from across the web. Once you’re done, you can swipe away and get right back to scrolling.

Google’s Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 to deploy in producing new text, voice, and image features on the new Samsung Galaxy S24 series.Details?

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Google Cloud today announced a new multi-year partnership to bring Google Cloud’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology to Samsung smartphone users around the globe.

Starting with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series announced today at Galaxy Unpacked in San Jose, California, Samsung will be the first Google Cloud partner to deploy Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI via the cloud to their smartphone devices.

“Google and Samsung have long shared deeply held values around the importance of making technology more helpful and accessible for everyone.

We’re thrilled that the Galaxy S24 series is the first smartphone equipped with Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI,” said Janghyun Yoon, Corporate EVP and Head of Software Office of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

“After months of rigorous testing and competitive evaluation, the Google Cloud and Samsung teams worked together to deliver the best Gemini-powered AI experience on Galaxy.”

Samsung is the first Google Cloud partner to deploy Gemini Pro on Vertex AI to consumers. Built from the ground up to be multimodal, Gemini can generalize and seamlessly understand, operate across, and combine different types of information including text, code, images, and video.

As part of this partnership, Samsung is also one of the first customers to test Gemini Ultra, Google’s most capable and largest model for highly-complex tasks. HMD Global Removes Nokia Branding, Teases Upcoming Device Launches with HMD Branding

HMD Global Removes Nokia Branding

Highlights

  • HMD Global removes Nokia branding from its official channels.
  • New HMD-branded smartphones and devices announced.
  • Transition signifies HMD’s move towards establishing its own identity.
  • Upcoming launches to include innovative HMD Global devices.

In a move that has taken the mobile industry by surprise, HMD Global, the steward of Nokia-branded smartphones for the past seven years, appears to be charting a new course away from the iconic Nokia brand.

The sudden lockdown of all Nokia Mobile social media accounts and the announcement from MyNokia about the impending closure of official channels on February 7 is a clear signal of a significant shift in HMD’s strategy.

Although there has been no formal declaration from either Nokia or HMD Global about ceasing production, the speculation is rife that HMD will not renew its licensing agreement, which is nearing its end.

“We’re still makers of Nokia smartphones and Nokia dumbphones, but we’re getting warmed up to bring you even more, including original HMD devices, and phones from all-new partnerships” the website reads.

Nokia’s Legacy and Market Performance

Everyone knows that Nokia was a name synonymous with the pioneering era of mobile phones, managed to carve out a niche for itself in the highly competitive smartphone market, despite not being the top choice among consumers.

Early tech adopters would know that even to this day the Nokia 1100 and 1110 are the 1st and 2nd respectively on the list of most sold phones ever.

Just last year, Nokia was one of the only two brands to register growth in the US during Q3 2023, underscoring its resilience and the potential for a comeback.

This makes HMD Global’s decision to phase out Nokia-branded products a puzzling one, considering the brand’s enduring legacy and recent positive performance indicators.

HMD’s Future Direction

HMD's Future Direction
HMD’s Future Direction

However, even though it is stepping away from the Nokia brand, HMD Global is not bowing out of the mobile phone industry.

On the contrary, the company is reportedly working on launching no fewer than six new phones.

This ambitious plan suggests that HMD is eager to forge a new identity and market presence under its own branding, moving beyond the shadow of Nokia.

The question that looms large, however, is whether these upcoming HMD-branded devices will be able to resonate with consumers and fill the void left by Nokia’s absence.

The transition marks the end of an era for Nokia enthusiasts but also heralds the start of a new chapter for HMD Global.

As the company prepares to introduce its fresh lineup, the mobile industry and consumers alike are keen to see if HMD can replicate or even surpass the legacy of Nokia with its forthcoming devices.

While the Nokia brand may be fading into the background, the future of HMD Global and its ability to captivate the market with its upcoming launches is a narrative that is just beginning to unfold.
