Jeff Bezos

In Brief

Billionaires are quite eccentric and peculiar in their actions sometimes, so much so that it is difficult to tell if what they’re saying is serious or a joke. It is impossible to gauge as to how a rich person’s mind works.

There is a reason why they have reached a stature that everyone looks up to them as idols for emulation or at least aspire to be like them. While there are many billionaires that are misers, you can always find some that are extremely big-hearted.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com Inc., is the latest addition to the list as he has now pledged to donate a majority of his $124 billion worth wealth, which proclaimed on many news channels.

Bezos stepped down as Amazon CEO in 2021 and holds 10% of the e-commerce giant, although he refused to divulge the details except that he was building the capacity to be able to donate his wealth, along with Lauren Sanchez, his partner-turned-philanthropist.

Mr.Bezos has already pledged $10 billion for protecting nature and fighting climate change via the Bezos Earth Fund where he is the executive. He wants to do things in a levered way, which is why he wants to carefully plan everything out so that everything happens in a systematic manner.

Bezos had already declared in 2021 that he planned to go ahead with his Earth Fund as a long-term project for his philanthropy, along with Sanchez, while both of them donated $100 million to renowned American singer-actor, Dolly Parton, along with the Courage and Civility Award.

Also last year, Jeff Bezos donated $100 million to Jose Andres, chef and disaster relief, and Van Jones, CNN Commentator cum activist, which left both of them touched by the gesture.

Conclusion

It will be interesting to see as to how Jeff Bezos will plan on this massive donation drive for which he will need significant time to ponder and accordingly plan things out so that it is managed smoothly.

iPhone to Come with USB-Type C Port; Lightning Port to Continue

iPhone USB-C port
iPhone USB-C port

Highlights

  • USB Type-C Port Added to Apple Smartphone
  • Apple Planning
  • Lightning Connector

In Brief

Apple products are some of the most reliable and trustworthy ones that you can think of at the top of your mind. People don’t think twice before purchasing a newly launched Apple device or gadget in the market.

When it comes to devices, smartphones are the ones that hog the most limelight and the same goes for Apple smartphones as well, especially as there are billions of users in the world for whom Apple handsets are the first preference, while others simply don blinkers and can’t see beyond Apple.

Apple has just launched its iPhone 14 series smartphones in September 2022 that were quite well received, even though the response was not as phenomenal as it was for iPhone 13 models but there is something new that Apple has for its upcoming smartphone models.

Although earlier there were only speculations, it has now been confirmed that iPhones will now come with the USB Type-C Port, which is something that will be difficult to believe for certain users who would’ve never though that the day would come in their lifetime.

USB-C

The news has left many users excited at the prospect of getting a portable cable as they opine that it will decide the future of the iPhone which is, according to them, very bright due to the USB Cable.

Those wondering that it is Apple that made the decision of adding the type-c port need to know that it was the European Union (EU) that mandated it as the common charging point on all electronic devices by 2024.

There was a strong buzz in the rumour mills that the upcoming iPhone model i.e. iPhone 15 will ditch the lightning port in favour of USB Type-C Port but the 2024 deadline comes as a relief for Apple, which means that USB-C will come from iPhone 16.

It appears that Lightning port won’t last for long once the USB-C comes out but it there’s no denying that it plays a vital role in the Apple ecosystem, which is why it can be confirmed that it will not be going anywhere even after USB-C becomes available.

Lightning Port

The Lightning port connector was introduced by Apple way back in 2012 during the launch of iPhone 5, iPod Touch, and iPod Nano, where it soon found its way through other Apple devices.

Those were times when users could charge all devices with one cable but since the majority of the people in India, at that time, used Android phones, it was difficult to find a lightning port connector for iPhones, even though, while small, there was still a significant population that did use iPhones.

Come 2018, Apple got rid of the lightning port on iPads and launched the new iPad Pro Models with USB-C because the iPad was being pitched as a portable computer, which was also Apple’s most powerful tablet and it would have created a bad impression on the company if it continued to use the lightning port, which had a limited charging access.

USB-C

Conclusion

Now the coast is clear for Apple to start using USB-C for future iPhone models lined up for launch in the coming years that will allow the tech giant to harmonize the experience for all future iPhone and iPad owners, along with accessories also switching full time to USB Type-C port.

VLC Media Player Ban Lifts in India; MeitY Removes 9 Month Ban

0
VLC Media Player

Highlights

  • VLC Player download was banned in India in February this year.
  • The company later sent a legal notice to the government asking why its service was banned.
  • The Indian government is yet to release a statement on the VLC unban.

Brief Summary

There are dozens of media players that are of great use for users, especially in a country like India, where the tastes and preferences are so diverse that it is impossible to cater to each and everyone’s taste.

VLC Media Player is one the most prominent ones that is extremely popular in India but it has been going through a rough patch as of late after it was banned by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) around February 2022.

VLC Media Player

Even many users were disgruntled at the ban of such a huge multimedia player with millions of users downloading it every day, which is why things were going smoothly.

But once the ban was imposed, users were quite surprised that it happened in such a way, especially as the Central Government of India and the VideoLAN Project refused to divulge any information regarding the ban.

VLC has received legal support from the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) of India, which also highlighted the issue publicly so that everyone became aware of the issue.

Prior to the ban, VLC Media Player had received nearly 25 million downloads every year, or so it claims but the makers were shocked when the ban was imposed on the company throughout the country.

Now with the ban being lifted, the central government has yet to give any official statement on why it has done so but ever since the news spread, the downloads have started at a massive spree all over again.

VLC Media Player did not take things lying down as it soon sent a legal notice to the central government in October 2022 asking for an explanation and sought permission to put its case forward via virtual hearing, while also threatening to initiate legal proceedings if the government did not give a justification for the ban.

If recent reports are to be believed, VLC Media Player faced the countrywide ban as the government found ‘suspicious behavior’ as cybersecurity experts alleged that a renowned hacking organization in China called Cicada had hacked into VLC for distributing malware, prompting the government to ban it.

Conclusion

Given that the ban has now been lifted, VLC Media Player has apparently not just put forth their case excellently but has also proven its innocence and will be careful with its proceedings from now on so as to prevent any such thing from happening again.

Android Lock Screen Vulnerability Could Give Attackers Complete Access to Your Phone — What To Do?

0
Android Lock Screen Vulnerability

What if we tell you that the screen lock of your Android smartphone can be easily bypassed to leave your smartphone vulnerable to attackers? This is actually true and Google has Hungry-based cybersecurity expert David Schütz to thank for bringing this software bug to their attention. The bug, as stated by Google and Schütz, has now been fixed in the Google security update of November 5, 2022.

Tech researcher David Schütz revealed in his blog post that he was able to detect a vulnerability affecting all Google pixel smartphones that made it possible for any attacker to easily unlock the screen lock without knowing the passcode. Schütz claimed that the bug might not be limited to Pixel smartphones and there is a chance other Android devices also carry a similar software flaw.

In the blog post, Schütz divulged the details of his research process and mentioned, “The issue allowed an attacker with physical access to bypass the lock screen protections (fingerprint, PIN, etc.) and gain complete access to the user’s device. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2022-20465 and it might affect other Android vendors as well. You can find my patch advisory and the raw bug report I have sent to Google at feed.bugs.xdavidhu.me.”

Android Lock Screen Vulnerability

Most Android smartphones have a screen lock that allows smartphone users to set up a passcode, either numerical or a pattern, that locks the screen. Screen locks these days also have a form of face print or fingerprint. However, numerical passcode screen locks are probably the most common and widely used across the world. There is also a separate lock functionality for the SIM card inside the smartphone. This ensures that no one would be able to eject or physically take out the SIM card from the smartphone as long as the SIM is locked. This is often a numerical PIN lock. These SIM cards also have another personal lock unlock code that is used at times when a wrong PIN is entered consecutively three times on the smartphone.

It is also revealed that for the attackers to work around the bug, the smartphone must be at least once unlocked after the last time it was restarted. The bug can pose a threat of exploiting any Android device with a physical SIM slot. The research details, however, did not make it clear whether smartphones with eSIM also pose similar vulnerabilities.

Google has reportedly paid $70,000 to Schütz for finding out and reporting the Android smartphone bug privately to the company. The company is calling it “accidental” security but, which has now been fixed. Android smartphone users are now advised to update and install the security update in order to ensure that devices are shielded from the lock screen vulnerability.

According to one of the reports published in the media, the bug only affected devices running on Android 10 or later versions. Although Schütz’s blog post doesn’t mention any specific smartphone models except that the bug was found in Google Pixel phones, it is widely reported in the media that only Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 5 were compromised.

Schütz, in his blog post, reveals that Google informed him that his private report about the lock screen bug wasn’t the first time. Google had also received another report about the issue and Schütz’s research result was a duplicate report for them. However, Google still rewarded Schütz because it was only after his report that the company started to work on the fix.

Highlights

  • The move to hire 53,000 workers in India is part of Foxconn’s plan to diversify its supply chain into India
  • Foxconn is facing disturbances in production and fuelling concerns as China has imposed strict Covid-19 restrictions on global supply chains
  • Foxconn is also talking to the Tamil Nadu government about accelerating its hiring efforts, housing facilities for workers and more

Brief Summary

Apple is arguably as well as inarguably the biggest tech giant in the world with little competition from anybody, which is why people have high expectations whenever it comes out with a device or gadget.

2022 has anyhow been a good year for devices as all tech giants have contributed with something new although Apple and Google took the limelight with the launch of iPhone 14 series and Pixel 7 series smartphones, respectively.

It isn’t easy to keep yourself at the number one spot for a sustainable period, which is why the likes of Apple, Google, Xiaomi, Samsung, and others have reached a stature that is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to match.

Foxconn is the largest supplier for Apple that is planning to quadruple the company’s workforce in India by hiring around 55,000 workers because it wants to diversify the country’s supply chain as far as possible.

Foxconn has its own iPhone factory in India due to which it hopes to increase the supply chain by two years after the disruption of supply chain in neighboring China, which is why it wants to manage its Indian operations as early as possible.

The supplier has a Zhengzhou plant that is the largest iPhone factory in China that is facing disruptions in production due to which concerns are being raised, while China imposing Covid-19 restrictions on the supply chains globally is only adding to the woes as the plant has more than 200,000 workers.

Luckily, Foxconn has an Indian manufacturing unit based in Tamil Nadu where it plans to move its iPhone production, which is why it plans to hire around 55,000 workers, thereby taking the tally to 75,000 in the next two years.

It isn’t that Foxconn is limited to Apple alone as it also manufactures battery-related products for a number of tech companies that have a global presence, but as of now it is concentrating on driving iPhone productions in India as it is in talks with Tamil Nadu officials about boosting its hiring efforts.
