Apple, Google, and Amazon to meet parliamentary panel today to discuss unfair business practises

On Tuesday, a parliamentary committee asked executives of major tech firms like Apple, Google, Netflix, and Amazon to respond to 10 questions about what, in their opinion, is causing anti-competitive behaviour in the digital sphere. This was largely directed at Google.

In order to examine various aspects of competition in the digital market, the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, Jayant Sinha, reportedly called representatives from these tech giants’ Indian subsidiaries. The committee has previously met with representatives from other top companies, including Paytm, Swiggy, Zomato, Flipkart, Ola, Oyo, and the All India Gaming Association, to discuss similar issues.

The panel reportedly wanted to know why in-app purchases come with a 30% fee and why subscription costs are so high. Concerns about platform neutrality have been raised when online platforms act as both a marketplace and a rival. The executives of these companies were questioned regarding their keyword bidding policies, the use of data, and whether or not this usage hinders new competitors from entering into the market.

These businesses were also questioned about how they define markets, who their rivals are, how they adhere to the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), and what procedures they use when suspending apps. Additionally, some complaints they have received in recent months from Indian tech companies are the basis for this.

The search engine giant claimed to have made Rs 13,887 crore from the sale of advertising space in the 2020–21 fiscal year, according to sources.

In terms of billing and subscription fees, it also stated that they are eschewing a one-size-fits-all strategy. Google announced that it has also started a user choice billing pilot in India with Spotify and plans to add more partners. The deadline for adding Indian users to the Google Play billing system has also been extended until October 31, 2022.

According to Meta, a company’s overall data holdings don’t pose an entry barrier, and the company competes in both the international market and the Indian market.

Additionally, Netflix claimed that there is no entry barrier for competitors when it comes to entertainment data, which is easily replicable.

Significant modding websites removed a Spider-Man mod that replaced the in-game pride flags.

Two of the most popular websites for PC game mods, NexusMods and ModDB, have taken down a project that removed the in-game pride flags from the recently released PC port of Marvel’s “Spider-Man Remastered.”

The game recently transitioned from being a PlayStation exclusive to a Windows PC title. The modding community, which now has the freedom to change Spider-Man into Kingpin and other characters, has naturally taken an interest in the expansive, open-world superhero game.

Some modders, however, took advantage of this newfound freedom and went after the various Pride flags dispersed throughout Marvel’s Spider-Man‘s New York and replaced them with American flags. Thankfully, well-known mod websites ModDB and Nexus Mods have spoken against this behaviour.

Nexus Mods published a blog on its website on Thursday in which it discussed some “silly drama.” In the article, it is described how a user used a sock puppet account to upload an anti-LGBTQ mod that eliminated all Pride flags from in-game graphics. The site administrators banned the user’s main account as well as the sock puppet account after Nexus Mods called the user out for purposefully trolling.

“In regards to the replacement of Pride flags in this game, or any game, our policy is thus: we are for inclusivity, we are for diversity,” wrote user Dark0ne, site owner and author of the Nexus Mods blog post. It further wrote, “If we think someone is uploading a mod on our site with the intent to be against inclusivity and/or diversity then we will take action against it. The same goes for people attempting to troll other users with mods deliberately to cause a rise.”

The post continued by promising that the team would work harder to update the website on their own in the future. Additionally, it was made clear that when removing mods of this nature, Nexus Mods is only able to do so from its website and not completely delete them from the internet. Some mod sites might have this kind of hateful mod available, but Nexus Mods won’t be one of them.

A few hours later, when a supporter tweeted proof of a mod that specifically targeted “stupid Pride flags” and was tagged with “Trump” and “Trump 2024,” another well-known mod website, ModDB, followed in Nexus Mods’ footsteps. The site banned the users who made the mod and took down the content, according to a tweet from the ModDB Twitter account, which added that “ModDB is an inclusive environment for all and we do not permit targeting marginalised groups.” While ModDB’s moderation tools are automated, the site promised users that it will still remove content like this if made aware of it.

Even though site-specific bans like these won’t completely stop hateful mods, Nexus Mods and ModDB’s actions send an important message of inclusivity to players inside and outside the PC gaming community.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, mass production of the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022.

In a tweet, Kuo stated that the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models might still use chips made using TSMC’s most recent 5nm process given that the company’s guidance indicated that 3nm chip production revenue won’t start until 2023. Kuo suggests that the chipsets of the disputed 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models may have been produced using the 5nm fabrication process, citing TSMC guidance that the 3nm chip will begin to contribute to the chipmaker’s revenue in the first half of 2023.

He claims that the “5nm advanced node” could be used in these MacBook models. This indicates that the M2 chip powering the MacBook Pro (2022) and MacBook Air (2022) will also be found inside these new laptops. According to reports, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) may start producing its new 3nm chips for Apple by the year’s end.

It implies that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops with potent M2 Pro chipsets will take a little longer to arrive. The chipsets are anticipated to perform better and use less energy as a result of TSMC switching from the 5nm fabrication process to the 3nm process. Additionally, Apple may use the new 3nm process for its M2 Pro chipsets, making it the first company to do so.
