Skylo partners Beetel to deliver end-to-end IoT solutions to connect machines, devices

0

Skylo, the world’s first and most affordable end-to-end solution connecting machine and sensor data via satellite, has partnered with Beetel, a leading technology brand offering contemporary solutions for modern India’s connectivity and IT needs.

The two companies have partnered to rapidly scale the adoption of end-to-end Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to connect the billions of machines and remote assets in hundreds of industries across India.

As part of this partnership Beetel will provide sales, customer support, and product fulfillment to support Skylo’s fast-growing customer progress.

“Machine connectivity is critical, especially for those in traditionally analog industries, like logistics, construction, mining and agriculture,” said Angira Agrawal, Skylo COO.

“This partnership with Beetel is a big win as we help governments and businesses understand the tremendous value we bring by providing actionable insights to improve efficiencies, increase profits, and even save lives. With Skylo, logistics companies can get faster access to telematics info on their fleet, construction and mining equipment can be connected and managed in any part of the country, and farmers can utilize farming equipment more efficiently,” he added.

Today’s networks were designed to connect people. Machines and sensors, especially those in remote and underserved areas like rural farms and boats out at sea, require a different type of network — and it needs to be affordable, reliable, and continuous.

Skylo’s end-to-end solution meets this need with its Skylo Satellite Network, its elegant Skylo Hub, and its immersive Skylo Platform, accessible on mobile and desktop. Together, these components increase safety, drive economic development and job creation, and help with disaster preparedness.

Sanjeev Patil, Senior Vice President, Beetel, said, “We are excited to partner with Skylo as the ‘tip of the spear’ for the notable growth of the industrial IoT market in India. We believe that there’s a phenomenal market potential to bring analog, previously offline machines online for the first time. Beetel’s customer base, strong network, and experience in telecom, data, IT sales and services, when coupled with Skylo’s disruptive technology, will rapidly propel the Indian market.”

Skylo, alongside its strategic partners, will continue to advance Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a Digital India by connecting machines and sensors from space, so that businesses can understand, manage, and predict specific aspects of their operation in order to make better decisions.

Additionally, Skylo manufactures within the “Make in India” initiative, resulting in highly affordable, easy-to-install devices, coupled with its immersive dashboard for easy access to information from remote locations on mobile devices or desktops.

Worldwide semiconductor revenue up 5.4% to reach $442 Bn in 2020: IDC

0

Despite the impact of COVID-19 on the global economy, the semiconductor market performed better than expected in 2020, fueled by the growth in cloud computing and demand for devices to support remote work and learning. Worldwide semiconductor revenue grew to $442 billion in 2020, an increase of 5.4% compared to 2019, according to the Semiconductor Applications Forecaster (SAF) from International Data Corporation (IDC).

The DRAM and NAND markets also recovered after a poor 2019, growing 4% and 32.9%, respectively. IDC forecasts the semiconductor market will reach $476 billion in 2021, a 7.7% year-over-year growth rate as the various COVID-19 vaccines are disseminated and economies begin to open and gradually recover.

The emergence of COVID-19 and subsequent measures taken to manage infection rates, including stay-at-home mandates, remote work, remote education, travel restrictions, and manufacturing shutdowns, created significant business volatility that impacted industries unevenly.

“The nature of the recovery will depend upon how quickly government stimulus plans stabilize the global macroeconomy and consumer confidence improves as vaccinations roll out around the world,” said Mario Morales, program vice president, Enabling Technologies and Semiconductors at IDC.

“There are specific markets that remain on an upward trajectory and are essential to the recovery this year, including 5G, cloud, intelligent edge, and the dedicated foundry industry. The first half of the year will also see some inventory digestion in the enterprise, cloud, and telco equipment market, but we do not expect it to derail the growth for the year. Semiconductor technology remains critical across every industry on our journey to a sustainable recovery,” he added.

The market for semiconductors in computing systems, such as PCs and servers, outpaced the overall semiconductor market, growing 10.9% year over year to $152 billion in 2020.

“Measures to control the COVID-19 infection forced workers and students to stay at home, which forced corporations and consumers alike to acquire PCs,” said Shane Rau, research vice president, Computing Semiconductors.

“Further, the dispersal of workers and students away from centralized locations forced cloud service providers, telecommunications providers, and corporate IT departments to invest in their computing infrastructure,” he added. IDC forecasts computing systems revenues will grow 6.3% to $161 billion in 2021.

Smartphones were the second-largest demand driver for 2020 with the growth in 5G phones accelerating significantly. Healthy competition for lower cost 5G SoCs resulted in 5G phones being sold at a wide variety of price ranges to reach a broader set of consumers.

“Mobile phone shipments fell by more than five per cent in 2020, but mobile phone semiconductor revenues will have grown by about 3% due to a shift to higher ASP 5G semiconductors, more memory, sensors, and RF support for more spectrum bands,” said Phil Solis, research director for Connectivity and Smartphone Semiconductors.

“2021 will be an especially important year for semiconductor vendors as 5G phones capture 30% of all mobile phone shipments while semiconductors for 5G phones will capture nearly 54% of the revenue in the segment,” he added. IDC forecasts mobile phone semiconductor revenues will grow by 11.4% in 2021 to $128 billion.

The automotive and industrial semiconductor markets were significantly impacted by COVID-19, which created sales disruption and manufacturing disruptions, while trade policy impacted supply chains throughout the year. Sales improved in the third quarter of 2020, but automotive OEMs are experiencing manufacturing disruptions due to semiconductor shortages as some semiconductor foundries allocate production. Automobile sales, including light commercial vehicles, in 2020 declined 14.5% to 71 million vehicles, resulting in an 8.4% decline in automotive semiconductor revenues to $37 billion.

“An automotive recovery in 2021 depends on the rate of vaccination and how well the vaccinations defend against the new variants of COVID-19 that are emerging around the world,” said Nina Turner, research manager for Automotive Semiconductors.

“Semiconductor content growth in vehicles continues to outpace vehicle unit sales growth, with growth in semiconductors that enable electrification, infotainment and connectivity, and ADAs,” she added. For 2021, IDC forecasts that non-memory automotive semiconductor revenue will grow 12.6%.

iOS 14.5 developer beta to allow users unlock iPhones with Face ID while wearing mask

0

Apple has just released the developer beta of iOS 14.5 that has incorporated a new feature that makes it possible to unlock an iPhone using Face ID even while putting on a facemask.

According to some media reports, the feature in the Apple watch is called Unlock iPhone, and if it scales through the beta testing, then masked iPhone users who have an unlocked Apple Watch on their wrist will have Face ID automatically unlocked when Apple’s facial recognition system determines that they are wearing a mask. This is possible because the watch would have already verified a user’s Passcode to unlock the watch.

Last year March, as COVID-19 bore its fangs on the global populace and the use of facemasks were made compulsory, iPhone users found that Face ID was blocked from unlocking their devices forcing them to open the Passcode input screen.

To prevent users from taking their masks off, even for a second, and putting themselves at risk of catching COVID-19, Apple added a new feature in iOS 13.5 last May. If Apple’s facial recognition algorithm detects an authentic user wearing a mask, the Passcode screen comes up immediately instead of waiting for the mask to generate an incorrect Face ID result.

Also included in the iOS 14.5 developer version is the new App Tracking Transparency feature that asks users whether they want to opt-in so that they can be tracked by third-party apps and continue to receive tracked ads on their phone.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to step down as CEO of technology empire

0

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will step down as the company’s chief executive officer this summer, after more than a quarter-century at the helm of the retail, logistics, and tech powerhouse.

Bezos will become Amazon’s executive chairman and remain its biggest shareholder, the company said on Tuesday. He will hand over the CEO reins to Andy Jassy, the head of Amazon’s cash-cow cloud computing division.

Bezos, who extended the company’s reach to India with multi-billion dollar investments, said on Tuesday that in his new role he intends “to focus his energies and attention on new products and early initiatives”.

Andy Jassy, the head of the conglomerate’s web services, is to succeed him as Amazon’s CEO in the transition set for the third quarter. It is estimated that about half of the company’s revenue comes from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The phenomenal growth of Amazon’s retail business has made it a target for anti-monopoly actions and it will be Jassy’s lot to navigate through a spate of regulatory challenges from the US to Europe to India.

The company has benefited from the Covid-19 pandemic which sent online retail soaring as many stores shut down or were affected by the lockdowns and people cut down on trips outside homes. Amazon had a market capitalisation of $1.696 trillion on Tuesday, making it the planet’s fourth-largest company by value.

India was seen by Bezos as one of Amazon’s potential high-growth market and he is investing a total of $6.5 billion there. He was involved in a controversial attempt to acquire retail giant Futures Group, but was thwarted by Mukesh Ambani.

Besides retail, Amazon India distributes Bollywood and other entertainment through its Prime services.

Global tablet shipments return to growth in 2020: IDC

0

The worldwide tablet market had an outstanding fourth quarter (4Q20) with 19.5% year-over-year growth and shipments totaling 52.2 million units, according to IDC data. Impacted by the pandemic, the tablet market reached shipment levels not seen since the fourth quarter of 2017 when the total was 49.9 million.

Detachable tablets have broadened their presence in the market as the emphasis on productivity, flexibility, and ease of use is now greater than ever before and sales for this category were often in direct competition with notebooks. Shipments for detachable tablets grew 27.9% during the quarter as both Microsoft and Apple helped push the form factor with their respective products. Additionally, backlogs for PCs led some consumers to purchase these detachable tablets in place of notebooks. Meanwhile, slate tablets also grew 13.7% during the quarter as consumers sought ways to stay entertained.

“Unprecedented demand in the consumer and education segments due to work from home and online learning has undoubtedly led to the resurgence in tablet demand,” said Anuroopa Nataraj, research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. “However, the category is not expected to retain this momentum in the long term as it still faces immense competition from notebooks and smartphones.”

Tablet Company Highlights

Apple once again led the tablet market with 36.5% market share and year-over-year growth of 19.5% during 4Q20. The new iPad 10.2-inch and iPad Air 10.9-inch tablets launched in the last two quarters helped drive sales during the holiday quarter. With the pandemic restrictions still in effect and remote learning still the primary mode of teaching, there were several big deployments of iPads in the education segment.

Samsung retained second place with 19.4% share and exceptional year-over-year growth of 44.9%. The company shipped 10.1 million units in the quarter and 31.3 million units for 2020. It is still the largest provider of Android slate tablets with successful products such as the Galaxy Tab A and Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. Meanwhile, the vendor’s earnest efforts at making Android more productive and usable in a detachable form factor have helped the brand maintain a premium over other Android competitors.

Lenovo captured the third spot with global shipments of 5.6 million units and 120.6% year-over-year growth in 4Q20. Slates accounted for the majority of Lenovo’s tablet sales; however, their detachable portfolio has shown some momentum with the recently-launched Chromebook Duet producing a gain of nearly 2.5 percentage points for detachable tablets. Western Europe and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) remain the largest markets for Lenovo’s tablet business.

Amazon.com held the fourth position in 4Q20 with 7.6% year-over-year growth and shipments totaling 3.6 million. The United States remains the biggest market for Amazon tablets, followed by Western Europe. With budget-friendly tablets, Amazon has created a sweet spot for itself and the Fire Kids edition tablets have gained in popularity, especially during the pandemic as parents searched for ways to keep their kids indoors and entertained.

Huawei rounded out the top 5 with 3.3 million units in 4Q20 for a year-over-year decline of 25.7%. U.S. sanctions continued to derail the company’s plans for success. However, the company’s strong presence in China remains a bright spot for the brand.
