5G services were launched in India on October 1, 2022, as PM Narendra Modi finally laid to rest the speculations on whether 5G will ever come out or not. The venue was the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) that was held in New Delhi, which saw the who’s who of the telecom industry grace the occasion.

India’s biggest telecom companies, with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel leading the pack, have taken it upon themselves to roll out 5G services in different cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, among others.

As the plans to roll out 5G throughout India is going on in full swing, Jio has hired equipment suppliers to build a mega 5G network, which includes Nokia and Ericsson among others, both of which are Europe’s top telecom gear makers, but Jio has refused to divulge the size of the deal as network deployments for 5G services are going on.

Being under contract, Nokia will use its AirScale portfolio to supply equipment while Ericsson will do the same via 5G Radio Access Network from its Radio System and E-band microwave mobile transport.

The equipment includes 5G Massive MIMO antennas (multiple input multiple output) of high capacity, base stations, Remote Radio Heads, which support numerous spectrum brands, along with self organizing network software.

Given Nokia’s long standing presence in India, it goes without saying that this will be a profitable deal as it will make Nokia the supplier to the three largest telecom operators of India, while the likes of Apple and Samsung too have claimed they will upgrade their software for 5G smartphones in India.

If the rupee price continues to be the same, then it is likely that things might change from November 2022 and if prices increase, then the average selling price will surge to a record Rs.20,000 during the October-December period from Rs.17,000 during the April-June 2022 period.

While budget friendly smartphones might witness an upswing in fortunes, premium smartphones will not be affected by the weakening of rupee, at least for now as Apple has already hiked its 5G iPhone price in September 2022 due to rupee’s abysmal performance, which Samsung had already done in 2021.

There were reports that Motorola had been working on a rollable smartphone model that went by the codename ‘Felix’, which was rumoured to extend vertically that was interestingly similar to the smartphone prototype that was hinted at the Lenovo event.

Many people are guessing that this could be the Felix model that Motorola has been working on around early 2022 and is speculated to be small in size and quite pocket friendly when unrolled.

Since the device was in the early stages of development at the time, there were many reports doing the rounds that that the company was using a modified Motorola Edge 30 Pro for software tests that were being conducted.

It seems that Motorola has not revealed anything about its plans to launch any smartphone based on the prototype model shown at the Lenovo event, which is why people are highly curious to gain more knowledge on the matter.

The video shown at the event only showed a glimpse of the front panel and since many other smartphone brands are doing their own bid to launch their own foldable handsets, users are quite confused as to which brand model it could be.
