MBTT Description

We have seen so many technological advancements since time immemorial. Any new invention or discovery that was considered a benchmark/breakthrough during its time is now considered an ordinary thing.

This has been happening for a long time where we witnessed the social media revolution at the beginning of the 21st century and today, in 2022, the likes of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, etc. have become normal, everyday platforms but at that time, were considered revolutionary.

Now we are on the threshold of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that will set a whole new benchmark as and when it comes out. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is in the process of testing advanced satellites for communication for which it is working hard.

MIT is making use of a reconfigurable antenna that has the capacity to transmit and receive signals over multiple radio frequency bands that are relevant for commercial and military applications as these bands come in great use in such operations.

The MIT Lincoln Laboratory is the place of operations where a dome shaped radio antenna enclosure standing 38 feet high sits on the rooftop of the laboratory building, while inside the environment is climate-controlled, which protects it from the weather of New England.

There is this steel structure that supports a 20,000 pound satellite communications antenna (SATCOM), which is nearly 20 foot in diameter. The antenna is called the Multi-Band Test Terminal (MBTT) and has the capacity to rotate 15 degrees per second, thereby completing a whole revolution in just 24 seconds.

The virtuosity of this achievement can be gauged from the fact that with this speed, MBTT can locate, detect, and track satellites in low and medium earth orbit, which is referred to the altitude at which the satellites orbit the Earth.

Earlier the lab had no choice but to rely on smaller sized antennas for testing SATCOM but once MBTT was installed in 2017, things became easy to manage as MBTT is designed in such a way that it can be easily configured to support multiple radio frequency (RF) bands.

MBTT

Brian Wolf, who is part of the technical staff at the lab, has clarified that MBTT will prove to be a gamechanger of sorts in the near future for enabling development of advanced SATCOM technology, while the project takes place in the Advanced Satcom Systems and Operations Group, of which Mr. Wolf is an indelible part and has played a vital role in enhancing the project to a whole new level.

Wolf has further explained that there will be a waveform called PTW that will be used for transmitting signals between two modems that are communicating amongst one another and will provide safe, secure, and jamming resistant communications because jamming is when communication signals are interfered with.

It has been five years since MBTT was installed and throughout its duration, it has supported a range of experiments and tests where PTW has played a significant role like during the Protective Tactical Service Field Demonstration when MBTT conducted satellite tests at regular intervals.

Adding on, MBTT made use of the Inmarsat-5 Satellite for testing a prototype enterprise management and control system so as to enable resilient, focused, and uninterrupted SATCOM where the PTW modem prototype, onboard a 737 aircraft, communicated via Inmarsat-5 Satellite on its way back to MBTT.

Conclusion

MBTT has also supported non-PTW testing and is strongly connected via fiber-optic links for research facilities in the laboratory where it is set to perform more and more tests in the coming days while Brian Wolf and his staff have successfully tested the new signal processing technology to tackle jammer interference so that signals can be detected easily.

Review: Apple Watch SE

0
Apple Watch SE

Apple this year has come up with two Apple Watch models for consumers of different market segments. While Apple Watch Series 8 is what the brand is positioning as its best offering in the entire watch collection, Apple Watch SE is where things get interesting. It is modern and yet affordable which makes it a perfect catch amongst all its competitors. Apple Watch SE price starts at Rs 29,900, which is quite a masses-friendly range considering the other options available in the Indian market. Here’s a quick Apple Watch SE review to understand the product in detail.

The watch is currently available in three colour options without any materials or finishes exceptions in any of them. The three colours are Space Grey, Silver, and Gold. Apart from this, the Apple Watch SE can be purchased in three size variants. The smaller 40mm variant with a standard Sport Band is priced at Rs. 29,900, the slightly bigger variant on the other hand is priced at Rs. 32,900. The prices mentioned here are for the GPS only Apple Watch versions. To have LTE connectivity in-built into the Apple Watch SE, the same two size variants would cost Rs. 33,900 and Rs. 36,900 respectively. Apple also offers a lot of strap options for users to choose from and buy separately. This includes Apple’s new Solo Loop.

Apple Watch SE box includes Apple Watch SE (aluminium), Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable and Strap. An important item, an actual wall adapter for charging the Apple Watch, is missing from the box and it appears the brand assumes that everyone has a spare charger at home.

Before we move forward with a detailed description of Apple Watch SE features that are worth talking about, let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons.

Apple Watch SE

Pros

  • Affordability! It is a factor that can’t and shouldn’t be ignored especially when the product checks basics and most used feature boxes
  • Performance is the same as the Apple Watch Series 8, which is touted to be the company’s best product available in the market
  • The feature of car-crash detection for additional safety is a high-end feature. Getting it at this price point works great in favour of the Apple Watch SE

Cons

  • No always-on display. This could be a reason to downvote if you look at the product from a tech expert’s perspective.
  • There is no QWERTY keyboard also, which can make typing or signalling on the watch a little bit difficult
  • Most new features found in this model are already available in other older models. So, there is no reason to upgrade to it

Now, let’s take a deeper look at the specifications of the Apple Watch SE.

We have to talk about the design when it comes to smartwatches. And while Apple as a brand is not known for too much innovation and deviation from its original designs, it’s always interesting to look at its range of products to notice what the company has changed, if it did at all. On the design front, the Apple Watch SE looks more or less the same as previous Apple Watches, as anyone would have expected. This one again comes in a square shape and aluminium casing with a digital crown and a button on the right side. The Apple Watch SE’s retina LTPO OLED display with 1000nits brightness is big and the border rims are quite thin. The display has Ion-X strengthened glass on top in order to keep it safe from getting scratched at every encounter.

The watch comes with Apple’s S5 SiP (System-in-Package) and Bluetooth 5 along with WiFi for connectivity. It has GPS and GNSS for positioning as well as LTE connectivity on cellular models. For cellular connectivity, Apple Watch SE is supported by all three main carriers in India i.e. Airtel, Jio and Vi.

Apple Watch SE

Similar to its iPhone, Apple has always been up to date when it comes to the software of its wearable. The Apple Watch SE runs on WatchOS 7 and sports most of the features of the latest Apple Watch Series 6. Although the blood oxygen tracker of Series 6 is missing from the Apple Watch SE. The ECG sensor that the company provided in Series 4 and the now discounted Series 5 is also not there in the SE model. The different work trackers available in Watch SE include swimming tracking technology and water resistance up to 50 mm.

One thing to be noted is that Apple Watches are only compatible with iPhones including iPhone SE and no other devices whatsoever. Setting up the Apple Watch SE is easy and only required users to use the Watch app on their iPhones to scan the code from the display. The 32 GB of storage allows users to install a lot of apps and music easily on their Apple Watch SE.

Contrary to what usually is the apprehension regarding the battery life of an Apple Watch, the Apple Watch SE battery life is supported by a rather decent battery. The watch can smoothly last a day and a half on a single charge, which is appreciative when compared to other watches available in the market. However, if you are using the LTE connectivity function, the runtime may differ for different users. Full charging of the device takes around over two hours. This is slower than the charging capabilities of the Apple Watch Series 6.

On the whole, Apple has done a great job with SE. If you are looking for a smartwatch that does all the basics, looks stylish and is not really harsh on your pocket then Apple Watch SE fits the bill like no other out there. Those who already have an Apple Watch might not find many reasons to switch, but those looking for one at an affordable price shouldn’t let this one slip.

Elon Musk’s Twitter Faces Lawsuit for Mass Layoffs: Here’s All You Need to Know About WARN Act

0
Elon Musk took over Twitter

Elon Musk took over Twitter on 28th October by tweeting “ the bird is freed” and laid his plan to practise content moderation and promised advertisers that Twitter will not become a “free-for-all hell space”. This takeover caught everyone’s attention at the drop of a hat, but the news of the termination of 50% of twitter’s now ex-employees, including the number of top executive-level employees that also involves CEO Parag Agarwal and CFO Ned Segal that came from Twitter’s end spread like fire and became the talk of the town in a matter of no time. Since the controversial acquisition by Elon Musk, Twitter has been constantly in the news. Elon Musk stated the drop in revenue was the reason for sacking out the employees, such a large number that is almost 50% of the workforce. “If you are in the office or on your way to the office, please return home” was the statement received by half of the employees via mail while terminating their employment period on Twitter. This treatment of termination was taken under scrutiny by many ex-twitter employees and they expressed their reproachment to the manner as it was a violation of the WARN act. Subsequently, for this twitter is again under the news as it faces a lawsuit for mass layoffs. Seems like Elon Musk’s plan of terminating the number of employees clearing several departments just backfired. On the 5th of November, the declaration hit the headlines, that this San Francisco-based social media giant company started to fire their employees. This fast-approaching layoff was a bad idea as many analysts suggested that it would be violating the WARN Act under US and California law. Well, this was not overlooked by others, hence they sued Twitter Inc.

The WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act is written under US and California law, which elaborates on the idea of passing 60-day prior notice to the employees of different departments of a company with more than 100 employees about the inevitable arrangement of mass layoffs. If the organization is planning to engage in terminating some employees that exceed one-third of the workforce the entity is bound to give either the severance pay of 60 days or immediately ask the employee to serve a notice period. However, this was not the case with the mass layoffs on Twitter that aggravated some appalled ex-employees to use the law in their favour.

Conclusion

Elon Musk took over Twitter

Private company recruitment does come with a heavy lack of job security and this frailed situation is yet taken up by everyone, but to protect the public interest the law penned down The lawsuit claims to sue the employers who wronged them and violated the law. For major developments on the Twitter layoff case stay tuned! The continuous addition to this case has hooked us enough to write on every small piece of information coming up next.
