Samsung Galaxy S22 Price in India Falls after Galaxy S23 launch: Should you buy Galaxy S22 in 2023 , Price Cut makes it the S22 FE We Missed

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Highlights

  • Samsung Galaxy S22 price in India has been officially dropped after the Galaxy S23 launch.
  • The flagship was launched at Rs 72,999 but is now available at Rs 57,999 for the base model.
  • The new price is applicable on the Samsung website.
  • Buyers can get this flagship for even less via Flipkart without any terms or conditions.

Samsung Galaxy S22 price cut in India; Is It a Good Deal?

Samsung Galaxy S23 has finally launched at the Unpacked event, starting at Rs 74,999 in India.

While the design hasn’t changed much over the previous generation, including the Ultra model, the internal hardware receives improvements, especially the cameras and chipset.
Soon after the announcement, Samsung silently slashed the pricing of the Samsung Galaxy S22 on its own website.

To recall, the flagship launched at Rs 72,999 but is now available at a much cheaper price on Flipkart and Samsung’s own website.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 was launched in India at Rs 72,999 for the base model but now the price has been dropped to Rs 57,999 on the official Samsung website. However, the flagship is available for even less price on Flipkart as the e-commerce giant is selling it for as low as Rs 52,900.

Before the Galaxy S23 series goes on sale, the brand has slashed the prices of the Galaxy S22 from last year to make it a more affordable option.

This is the second price cut of the Galaxy S22 in the last three months. In November 2022, the brand slashed the price of this device by Rs 10,000, bringing its starting price (for the 128GB storage variant) down to 62,999. Now, another Rs 5,000 have been slashed from the price tag.

After the latest price cuts, the Galaxy S22 128GB storage model starts at Rs 57,999, while the 256GB model costs Rs 61,999.

The price cut applies to all of the color options of the device. To make the deal even sweeter, customers purchasing the smartphone using the Samsung shop app will get a discount of Rs 2,000.

Additionally, 100GB of free cloud storage from OneDrive will also come bundled with the purchase.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Price Cut in India, is it Worth Buying in 2023?

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S22 is definitely a good phone thanks to the immersive AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 SoC which can handle day-to-day tasks without any problem, and the phone has recently received the Android 13 OS, which brings tons of new features.

The cameras are still very capable of clicking good pictures in well-lit conditions and the software optimisations have largely improved night photography as well.

However, on the flip side, the battery life is pretty ordinary and it can’t even last one entire day. You will have to charge the phone for the second time on any given day.

So barring this shortcoming, if you are looking for a compact-sized phone and one that is quite powerful, the Galaxy S22 is a pretty good option to consider.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is an old 5G smartphone, but people can buy it if they want a flagship phone with a great camera setup and fast performance.

One doesn’t need to worry about software support because Samsung has promised to offer long-term support.

The handset is entitled to receive four years of major Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates so it’s safe to assume that the device will receive major updates till Android 16.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Price Cut

MODEL LAUNCH PRICE NEW PRICE
8GB/128GB Rs 72,999 Rs 57,999
8GB/256GB Rs 76,999 Rs 61,999

Difference & Similarities Between S22 & S23

Samsung Galaxy S22

One of more reasons to buy the S22 is that the new Galaxy S23 is pretty similar to its predecessor, so one will likely be getting more or less the same experience at a much lower price. The biggest difference is in the chipset and battery.

The rest of the features such as stereo speakers, IP68 water resistant rating, 25W fast charging, 6.1-inch AMOLED display and triple rear cameras are the same on both devices.

Galaxy S22 Price Cut Makes it the S22 FE we Never Got

S22 FE

Samsung didn’t reveal a new Fan Edition smartphone alongside the Galaxy S23 lineup at Galaxy Unpacked, but it did have a surprise announcement concerning the base Galaxy S22 from last year.

The 2022 flagship received a flat $100 discount, and in a roundabout way, this makes it the S22 FE we never received.

Samsung usually stops selling previous-generation flagships once a new series is out, and indeed, you can no longer buy the Galaxy S22 Ultra in the USA. As of this writing, the S22 Ultra page redirects to the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

However, the company will keep selling the base Galaxy S22, and during its S23 launch event in San Francisco, Samsung announced a new price of $699 for the 2022 flagship phone.

The Galaxy S22+ is still available for the original price of $999.

The Galaxy S22 is almost like the new Fan Edition smartphone. Samsung released the Galaxy S22 flagship last year for $799 and the Galaxy S21 FE $699. So, even though the company didn’t reveal a new Galaxy S22 FE phone for 2023, the $100 flat price reduction certainly makes up for it.

We don’t know how long the Galaxy S22 will remain in stock, but given that Samsung announced the $100 price cut on stage at Unpacked ,the S22 is probably here to stay for a while.

Filling the $699 price segment with the Galaxy S22 may be an even better solution than releasing a new Fan Edition phone.

The Galaxy S22 is a full-fledged flagship with premium firmware support, and it would’ve been difficult for a Fan Edition smartphone to offer better features for the price and fill its shoes.

By dropping the Galaxy S22 to $699, Samsung has essentially turned it into a Fan Edition smartphone — the one we never got and FE enthusiasts deserve.

Assuming this price cut happens in every market where Samsung would’ve released the S22 FE.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Specifications

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S22 sports a 6.1-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O display with a 120Hz variable refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate, 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 1.300 nits of peak brightness and Eye Comfort Shield.

The handset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 chipset paired with 8GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 256GB internal storage. The phone runs on Android 13-based OneUI custom skin out of the box.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 packs a 3,700mAh battery with 25W fast charging support. There’s an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, an in-display fingerprint sensor for security, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the front and back.

0

Highlights

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announces a reduction in basic customs duty on electronic components in the Union Budget 2023.
  • What the industry experts have to say about Union Budget 2023 from the perspective of Mobile Manufacturing in India.
  • Mobile Manufacturing in India crossed 31 crore units in 2022-2023, FM confirmed during budget.

The Finance Minister of India Nirmala Sitharaman, during her Union Budget 2023 speech, acknowledged the unprecedented growth registered in the mobile sector in the last few years.

Finance Minister said, “As a result of the various initiatives of the government, including phased manufacturing programs, mobile production in India increased from 5.8 crore units valued at Rs 18,900 crore in 2014-15 to 31 crore units valued at Rs 2,75,000 crore in the last financial year.”

As a major encouragement to the mobile phone manufacturers of India, the government announced a further reduction in customs duty on mobile phone component imports that are heavily used in the manufacturing of mobile phones along with reduced customs duty on open cells used in the manufacturing of television sets.

“Customs duty exemption is being provided to import of specified capital goods and machinery required for the manufacture of lithium-ion cells for batteries used in electric vehicles as is available for the manufacture of lithium-ion cells for batteries used in mobile handsets,” as per the Budget documents.

5G Technology

To encourage mobile manufacturing in India – major announcements made during the Union Budget 2023:

  • 75 per cent reduction in the duty of camera lens.
  • Removal of the duty on inputs to parts of connectors.
  • 5 to 2.75 per cent reduction in basic customs duty on parts of Open Cell of TV panels.
  • One year extension of custom duty exemptions due to expire on 31st March 2023.
  • Concession on import of lithium-ion batteries to further promote Make in India in the mobile phones production sector.

These steps will have no significant impact on the final product price but are generally in the right direction.

The cost impact on mobile phone’s Bill of Material (BoM) will be 0.16% to 0.19%.

What the Industry Experts Have to Say

Union Budget 2023

Muralikrishnan B, President, Xiaomi India

Muralikrishnan B, President of Xiaomi India believed GOI’s focus on turning India into a major digital powerhouse economy is encouraging.

Muralikrishnan B said, “Customs duty reduction in select component parts used in mobile phones and televisions will help increase domestic value addition. This will have a positive impact on the domestic component manufacturing industry. Overall, multiple drivers, including income tax relief for the middle class and the 10 lakh crore government capex allocation announced today, will spur growth in consumption demand and industrial growth across sectors.”

Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, India Cellular & Electronics Association

Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of India Cellular & Electronics Association, however, believes that the relief in customs duty can have negligible impact on mobile phone pricing for consumers.

Mohindroo said, “A high performing sector’s genuine requests have not been addressed.

These could have provided a significant impact on competitiveness leading to better exports, arresting the grey market and boosting revenue.”

The significant gaps are as follows:

  1. Capping of BCD on import of High-End mobile phones to arrest the burgeoning smuggled market which has crossed Rs. 12000 crores in 2023.
  2. This measure would have boosted government revenue, reduced smuggling, ensured fair trade and helped build legal businesses in India.
  3. Removal of input duties on Resin, Mesh, Sponge, Film, Gasket, Logo, Cover Tape, Adhesive Tape from 8.25% to 16.5% to Zero level.
  4. This was essential to promote the manufacturing of a very critical Vertical – Mechanics.
  5. Removal of input duties of 2.75%, duty imposed in the previous budget on the many Inputs of PCBA, Inputs of Connector & Inputs of Camera module.
  6. Removal of duty on certain parts of the Chargers. While we have built a huge charger manufacturing industry, these changes would have helped us to become more competitive.

Mohindroo added: “While the industry had met the 2021-22 manufacturing target of Rs 2,75,000 crore, we will fall short of the manufacturing target of FY 2022-23 because of domestic demand shrinking in 2022-23.”

Inspite of a glorious performance in exports which will cross Rs.70,000 crores in 2022-23 (versus Rs.45,000 crores in 2021-22 plus 50% increase). The 50% increase in GST from 12% to 18% has dealt a very cruel hand to this high performing industry which kept the nation’s economy moving during the Covid pandemic.

Competitiveness is the key for both buoyant domestic demand and export.”

Sanmeet Singh Kochhar, Vice President, India & MENA HMD Global

Sanmeet Singh Kochhar, Vice President, India & MENA HMD Global said that the Union Budget 2023 will have a direct impact on Made in India initiative. Kochhar said, “

“We welcome the promising Union Budget 2023 announced by honourable FM today. While the budget is futuristic with elements like Data Governance Policy, Centre of Excellence on AI, and Green Growth, the conventional thrust areas of infrastructure have also received a big boost, which will directly impact device manufacturing in India. Mobile Phone production in India has witnessed a phenomenal increase in recent years owing to policy support. The announcement to further reduce customs duty is another great step in this direction.”

Manish Sharma, Chairman, Panasonic Life Solutions India and Chair for the FICCI Committee on Electronics & Manufacturing

Manish Sharma, Chairman, Panasonic Life Solutions India and Chair for the FICCI Committee on Electronics & Manufacturing said the Union Budget 2023 brings good news for the industry. Sharma said, “It is encouraging to see a reduction in customs duties for inputs/parts of certain electronic items like lithium Ion batteries, TV, and Camera Lens. This will improve the feasibility of enhancing backward integration and subsequently enabling local manufacturing of electronics. We are also delighted to note that the reduction in tax for both the middle and upper classes indicates more money in the hand of taxpayers thus stimulating demand and driving consumption.”

Mahesh Jaising, Partner at Deloitte India

“Make in India push continues in line with the announcements in the previous few budgets. Customs duty is proposed to be reduced across sectors from 21% to 13%. This is a welcome change. Relief by way of reduced customs duty on inputs meant for mobile phone production is also specifically proposed.”

Maneet Pal Singh, Partner, I.P. Pasricha & Co

“This is a big boost to the manufacturing of mobile phones and television in India by extending the reduction in customs duty. This will welcome global players to establish manufacturing in India.”

Prabhu Ram, Head, The Industry Intelligence Group, at Cyber Media Research

“To further provide impetus to domestic value addition, the finance minister has proposed relief on customs duties of import of certain parts, including camera lens and batteries, by another year,” said.

Avnet Singh Marwah, CEO and Founder at Super Plastronic Pvt Ltd

“This is a welcome move by the government of India to reduce customs duty on the open cell to 2.5%, we will pass on this benefit to customers. Television prices can come down up to ₹3,000 on larger screens.” Super Plastronic Pvt Ltd manufactures TVs for brands including Kodak and Thomson.

Union Minister, Rajeev Chandrasekhar

Chandrasekhar, commenting on the overall budget, said“I thank Finance Minister and PM for having navigated India during difficult times of the Covid pandemic and even when many countries of the world are still struggling with their economies, the Indian economy is the fastest-growing economy in the world.”

The brand has also revealed performance numbers of the Poco X5 Pro by posting its AnTuTu score of 545,093 points.

AnTuTu score

Ithas compared the performance of the device equipped with the Snapdragon 778G to other devices equipped with MediaTek’s new Dimensity 1080 chip.

This is definitely a shot at smartphones that have recently launched with the Dimensity 1080 SoC on board like the Realme 10 Pro series and the Redmi Note 12 Pro series.

The phone is tipped to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC. The leaks suggest that the device will pack a 5,000mAh battery with support for 33W fast charging.

In terms of optics, the phone is expected to offer a triple-rear camera setup with a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro camera. It is also expected to offer a 13MP camera at the front.

The tipster also notes that the marketing materials were initially in a “non-english” language and were translated using Google translate. When asked about the availability of the vanilla POCO X5 in India, Ambhore replied that the phone will launch in Europe.

The Indian launch of the phone is doubtful as the POCO only launched the POCO X4 Pro 5G in India.

Even on the official Indian website, the company is only promoting the POCO X5 Pro, which seems to suggest that this will be the only device to launch in India.

POCO X5 Pro Price

The company has confirmed that a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G SoC will power the phone. Ambhore’s leaks build upon that by suggesting that the device will get a triple-rear camera setup with a 108MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro camera.

The device is expected to offer a 16MP front camera.

Other leaked features include support for 67W fast charging.

Both the phones are expected to launch globally on February 6th.

iPhone 15 Pro Max / iPhone 15 Ultra Launching with Apple First ever Periscope Camera

0
iPhone 15 Pro Max

Periscope camera would only be limited to iPhone 15 Pro Max / iPhone 15 Ultra, claims analyst

  • Apple is expected to release its first periscope camera with the iPhone 15 Pro Max / iPhone 15 Ultra.
  • With the new technology, the iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra could have up to 6x optical zoom.
  • The iPhone 15 series will rxelease in the second half of the year.

Tech giant Apple plans to unveil the iPhone 15 lineup in the second half of 2023, and it is expected to be the first series from Apple to feature a periscope camera. In a recent tweet, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed the tech giant will limit the periscope lens only to the highest-end model launched by the company, which will also be the convention in the iPhone 16 series.

The iPhone 15 series is expected to consist of four smartphones – iPhone 15, iPhone 15
Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which will likely be renamed iPhone 15 Ultra.

What Is A Smartphone Periscope Camera? And How Does It Work?

iPhone 15 Pro Max

Simply put, a periscope camera (also referred to as a periscope zoom lens) in a smartphone refers to a mobile phone camera unit which, due to employing a prism mirror system, extends its focal length by positioning the image sensor and zooms lens array sideways.

This limits the protuberance at the back of the phone while providing greater optical zoom than usually found on a typical smartphone camera.

The first mainstream smartphone to feature a periscope zoom camera is popularly believed to be 2019’s Huawei’s P30 Pro, although Oppo unveiled this technology at the Mobile World Congress back in 2017.

However, some people believe that smartphone periscope camera technology dates back to 2004 with sharp 902 mobile phone which had 2x optical zoom. This is pretty impressive given that the first camera phone had hit the market only a few years earlier.

What is a periscope zoom lens?

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The smartphone periscope camera is sometimes called a periscope zoom lens. This is mainly because of how the smartphone camera’s zoom lens array is positioned. To better understand this, let’s look at how typical mobile camera components are arranged.

On the back of a smartphone, you’ll find the round space(s) where the camera unit is installed and fitted with a protective glass/plastic layer that protects the lens(es) and the camera unit as a whole.

When the camera captures light information to create a picture, it enters the camera straight on and goes directly through the lens array and then onto the smartphone camera sensor.

How does Periscope Camera Work ?

iPhone 15 Pro Max

To understand this better, think of what the word periscope is most associated with– submarines. Submarine periscopes are basically bent tubes with mirrors used to see what’s happening above the water from below the surface. The mirrors are placed at an angle at the corners of the pipes and reflect light as it enters until it reaches the eye via an array of lenses.

A periscope camera works similar to submarine periscopes. A mirror system is installed where the lens would have normally been. So, instead of having light enter the camera directly through the lens and then onto the camera, the periscope system takes the incoming light and reflects it 90 degrees through the lens array and onto the sensor.

Periscope zoom vs optical zoom vs digital zoom Optical zoom relies on moving mechanical and glass elements to achieve magnification with minimal loss in picture quality. When the glass elements that make up the lens array move back and forth in relation to each other, you can capture a wide shot of the scene or a more zoomed-in shot.

With digital zoom, this is not possible because there are no moving glass elements that can magnify the image. To make up for this, the camera crops the image and enlarges it.

It then uses computational photography to fill in the rest of the pixel information that is missing. However, the results aren’t as good as with optical zoom. Periscope zoom on smartphone cameras is similar in operation to optical zoom in that it has a lens array with multiple lenses that move back and forth to zoom in and out optically. The difference is the focal length of these two systems.

The further you zoom in, the more the focal length increases. This is why telephoto lenses for DSLR cameras are so long. They can range from about 70mm to upwards of 300mm, which is very long.

iPhone 15 Pro Max / iPhone 15 Ultra Camera

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The analyst stated on Twitter that Apple would release its first periscope camera with the iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra, implying that the lens will be a key differentiator between the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max / iPhone 15 Ultra, thereby giving buyers an additional incentive to buy the most expensive model. A periscope lens is said to provide optical zoom capabilities allowing for 5x or even 10x optical zoom.

With the new technology, the iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra could have up to 6x optical zoom.
A previous report also indicated the same information. However, the tweet from the analyst contradicts recent information from The Elec, which claimed that the periscope camera would be available on both the iPhone 16 Pro Max / Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro.

What’s the Big Deal about a Periscope Camera?

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The technology refracts light onto the lens sensor for magnification, with the lens mechanics built into the inside of the smartphone rather than the outside, as a traditional zoom lens for a DSLR does. It has progressed to the point where lenses in smartphones are compact enough to fit into a standard lens enclosure and do not take up too much internal space.

However, Apple wont be the first smartphone brand to bring this technology as it has already been seen in smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra models, the Google Pixel 7 Pro and 6 Pro, OnePlus 10 Ultra and a few others. OPPO was the first to introduce the periscope lens technology and it was first seen on a mainstream phone on the 2019 Huawei P30 Pro. The company’s new technology, dubbed 5x, manages to cram a telephoto lens inside a smartphone, enabling 5x “lossless” zooming.

iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra Specifications (Expected)

iPhone 15 Pro Max

All iPhone 15 series models may feature the Dynamic Island introduced with the iPhone 14
Pro models. However, the iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra will come with features like an A17 chipset, increased RAM, a titanium frame, solid-state buttons, and much more.

A recent report said that Apple is working on 8K video recording, but it’s unclear if this is just for the iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra or the iPhone 15 Pro. The report also said that Apple might be working on making the iPhone Ultra’s battery last up to 3-4 hours longer. The same report also stated that the tech giant might raise the price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra to $1,199, up from $1,099 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
