It aims to find a balance between affordability and functionality, and this review will provide a comprehensive look into all that Moto G14 has to offer.

Moto G14: Verdict

Moto G14: Verdict

The Moto G14 offers an appealing package for budget-conscious users. Its ergonomic design, decent cameras, clean software, and satisfactory battery life are countered by an underwhelming display and mediocre performance.

The addition of surprising features like dual speakers adds to its appeal, making it an option worth considering.

Moto G14: Design and Display

As mentioned above, the design of the Moto G14 is reminiscent of previous Moto phones in the G series. Its ergonomic form and reasonable weight make it comfortable to hold.

Additionally, the build quality of the phone is sturdy, thanks to the use of unibody polycarbonate material. Though not as luxurious as some metal or glass alternatives, it provides a good grip and contributes to the phone’s light weight nature.

We also think that the matte finish on the back feels premium, especially in comparison to other budget phones. The Sky Blue colour variant, which we received, adds flair, and the layout of the buttons and fingerprint scanner is well-thought-out.

A USB Type-C port is present on the bottom, and a dual-camera setup housed in a rectangular frame adds to its aesthetic appeal. Overall, the design does not break new ground but offers a decent look for budget-conscious users.

The display leaves room for improvement, with a 6.5-inch FHD+ (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) IPS LCD display that has a standard 60Hz refresh rate. It’s not the most fluid, and brightness could be better.

Despite having WideVine L1 certification for HD content, the bezels are more prominent compared to competitors, and some backlight bleeding is present around the punch-hole. The viewing experience is decent for the price but falls short of impressive.

Furthermore, the display’s colour reproduction is satisfactory for general use, but professional users and media enthusiasts might find it lacking.

The 60Hz refresh rate also means that scrolling and animations are not as smooth as those found in phones with higher refresh rates. For a budget device, these compromises are expected, but they do limit the phone’s appeal to a wider audience.

Moto G14: Cameras

Moto G14: Cameras
Moto G14: Cameras

Equipped with a 50MP primary camera, the Moto G14’s image capabilities are on par for a budget phone. Daylight shots are detailed and mostly sharp, though sometimes there’s a slightly yellow tint when sunlight is shining behind the subject.

Exposure handling is average, and focus speeds could be improved. The 2MP macro sensor is less useful, and the 8MP selfie camera tends to over sharpen images. Overall, the cameras are serviceable for the price range but not groundbreaking.

In the realm of low-light photography, the G14 struggles somewhat. Images in dim lighting are often grainy and require much assistive lighting.
The dedicated Night mode, though, works better than anticipated, adding more detail and reducing noise.

Highly saturated colour reproduction and occasional blurring due to shake are areas where we feel improvement would be welcomed.
Nevertheless, considering the budget constraints, the camera system performs acceptably for casual photography.

Moto G14: Performance and Features

Moto G14: Performance and Features
Moto G14: Performance and Features

Powered by the UNISOC Tiger T616 chipset, the Moto G14’s performance is above average at best. While the 4GB RAM and 128GB storage cater to everyday needs, the device struggles with heavy multitasking and gaming.

There’s noticeable lag in the UI, and things can freeze up when juggling multiple demanding apps. However, the UI is clean enough for this not to be a recurring problem.

Furthermore, the device’s chipset is neither the most powerful nor efficient in its category. Heavy-duty gaming would be a bad idea on the device, but normal games run fine without issue.

For casual users, these performance limitations might not be a deal-breaker, but for those seeking more, the G14 might disappoint.
Still, the addition of dual-speaker setup and excellent 4G services are pleasant surprises at this price point. The fingerprint scanner works efficiently but can be slow at times, adding to the mixed performance experience.

Moto G14: Software

Moto G14: Software
Moto G14: Software

Running Android 13 with Motorola’s My UX interface, the Moto G14 provides a near-stock Android experience.

The clean and intuitive interface is one of the strong points of the handset, offering useful gestures like three-finger screenshots, Quick Capture, Fast Flashlight, and more.
If you’ve used a Motorola phone before, you will feel right at home, as the interface’s simplicity aids navigation and usability.

The phone’s software is not bogged down by unnecessary bloatware or heavy customisations.
We feel that the near-stock Android experience provides a refreshing and straightforward approach to mobile interaction.

Moto G14: Battery

Moto G14: Battery
Moto G14: Battery

With a 5,000mAh battery, the Moto G14 offers a full day of usage and up to two days on moderate usage.
Although the 20W charger takes up to three hours to fully charge the device, it’s adequate for the budget segment.

For users on the go, the charging speed might be a concern, but the phone’s battery endurance ensures that you won’t find yourself constantly searching for a power outlet.

Considering the budget constraints, the battery performance is commendable and aligns with the needs of a regular user who doesn’t engage in heavy usage.

Moto G14: Final verdict

Moto G14: Final verdict
Moto G14: Final verdict

The Moto G14 stands as a thoughtful addition to the budget smartphone market capturing a mix of expected features and some pleasant surprises that cater to its target audience.

With an ergonomic design that is both comfortable to hold and visually appealing, coupled with a clean and user-friendly Android experience, the phone doesn’t hesitate to establish its value proposition.
The commendable inclusion of dual-speaker setup and satisfactory battery life also reflect a keen understanding of user needs.

Though not without its flaws, such as less than ideal performance and an average display, its attractive price point and Motorola’s consistent reputation for delivering functional and value-driven devices make it a viable option for budget-conscious users.

Its nuanced strengths and weaknesses make it an option worth considering for those seeking essential smartphone features without making significant compromises on quality or functionality.

Madhav Sheth

HIGHLIGHTS

* HonorTech is set to Honor smartphones, tablets, foldable, wearables, and laptops in India.
* Honor is aiming at a 5% share of the smartphone market by December 2024.
* Honor wants to reach Rs 10,000 crore by the end of the next year .

As the government pushes consumer electronics companies towards local manufacturing, former realme India chief Madhav Sheth on Monday announced a new venture called HonorTech, which is a 100 per cent Indian joint venture (JV) collaboration, and will infuse Rs 1,000 crore by year-end to begin with.

HonorTech has announced its partnership with PSAV Global, the current official distributor of Honor products in India. This is a 100% Indian joint venture (JV) collaboration that makes it a “100% Indian company with Indian owners”, as told by Madhav Sheth to ET.
Sheth is the CEO of the newly formed brand who exited Realme India to oversee Honor’s India re-launch.

In an interaction with IANS, Sheth who has been a known for his contribution in Indian smartphone industry, said that with his new venture HonorTech that will bring the Honor brand ecosystem to India, he aims to capture 4-5 per cent market share in the country by end of next year.

The infusion of Rs 1,000 crore will be channeled strategically into enhancing products, refining software offerings and expanding service capabilities.

The company aims to achieve a projected revenue of Rs 10,000 crore by 2024.
“With 100 per cent licensing deal, HonorTech is vested with unparalleled level of decision-making authority and decision-making rights.

HonorTech is aligned with the government’s vision to make India a manufacturing hub and a driving force for innovation that has gained significant momentum in recent years,” Sheth emphasised.

“We are looking to build end-to-end supply chain in India. This will help generate an estimated around 4,000 new jobs by the end of next year,” he told IANS.

Headquartered in Gurgaon, HonorTech has joined hands with Noida-based PSAV Global to expand the Honor smartphones‘ network in the country.

The partnership will pave the way for local partnerships as HonorTech is the first Indian company led by Indian leadership in this industry, working together in collaboration with PSAV, the existing Honor partner.

This collaboration will allow HonorTech to select its product, partners, manufacturing, services and distribution networks for the domestic market.

“Through our collaboration, we offer India a global product and a strong brand that has cutting edge technology, and a self-reliant ecosystem”, said Sheth.

The India smartphone market shipped 64 million units in the first half of 2023 with a 10 per cent year-over-year decline, according to an industry report.

In the second quarter (April-June period), the market grew by 10 per cent over the previous quarter but declined by 3 per cent YoY with 34 million units, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

“We at HonorTech are leveraging our experience and expertise to catalyse transformative change, utilising latent talent, technical knowledge, R&D, and global supply chain,” said Sheth.

Drawing on Honor’s global leadership in R&D and innovation, HonorTech will leverage over 7,800 research and development personnel, six research and development hubs and over 100 cutting-edge laboratories.

HonorTech will begin the smartphone launch in India by importing devices. It has plans to start manufacturing them locally eventually.

It is hoping to begin local manufacturing early next year. But as you may know, these plans depend on various factors including getting necessary approvals from authorities, specifically for the production-linked incentive scheme (PLI).

Talking about the future goals, Sheth said HonorTech would look to capture a 5% smartphone market share in India by December 2024. He is hoping to reach the Rs 10,000 crore mark in terms of revenue during the same time period.

#AskMadhav

It will start off by releasing smartphones in USD 100 to USD 1,000 (Rs 8,310 to Rs 83,100) price range. These will also include foldable devices. There are also plans to release tablets, wearables, and laptops in the country.

Sheth recently teased the launch of the first Honor smartphone in India by saying, “An optimum tech is coming your way to redefine your experience. A few days to go for the biggest announcement”.

There are speculations it could be the Honor X9a or an Honor Magic series smartphone. It is also expected to release the Honor X90 flagship soon in India.

iQoo Z8 Specifications & Colour Options Leaked Ahead Of Next Month Expected Launch

0

HIGHLIGHTS

* iQOO will launch iQOO Z8 series smartphones soon in China.
* The vanilla model will feature MediaTek Dimensity 8200 SoC.
* iQoo Z8 will feature a 6.64-inch flat LCD panel.
* iQoo Z8 is tipped to come with a dual rear camera setup.

iQoo is reportedly planning to expand its Z series of smartphones with the launch of iQoo Z8 in China next month.

Ahead of official details, the phone’s detailed specifications including processor, RAM, display alongside camera features have recently leaked on Weibo.

The purported iQoo Z8 is tipped to come with a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 SoC that could be paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM. The phone will likely succeed the iQoo Z7, which was launched earlier this year in India.

According to a Weibo post by tipster Digital Chat Station, iQoo is working on a successor to iQoo Z7 i.e, iQoo Z8, which may debut next month.

iQOO Z8 Leaked Specifications

iQOO Z8 Leaked Specifications
iQOO Z8 Leaked Specifications

The smartphones iQOO has been launching are packed with capable hardware. They are available in vibrant colors and are priced very attractively.

According to the latest leak, the iQOO Z8 5G has a 6.64-inch Full HD+ flat LCD panel with a centrally aligned punch-hole. The screen will have a 2388 x 1080 pixels resolution and a presumably high 144Hz refresh rate.

As IQOO is rumored to have used IPS LCD panels, it could explain the presence of a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, instead of an under-display one.

The Geekbench listing of one of the smartphones in the iQOO Z8 series indicated it will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8200 SoC, which would be paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage.

The latest leak about the iQOO Z8 claims iQOO will also launch a variant with 8GB RAM, and buyers would be able to get to choose between 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB of internal storage.
Simply put, there could be 8GB + 128GB, 8GB + 256GB, 12GB + 256GB, and 12GB + 512GB variants of the iQOO Z8.

For photography and videos, the iQOO Z8 series is tipped to feature a triple rear camera setup, headlined by an OIS-enabled 64MP primary camera, which will be paired with a 2MP macro lens, and another as-yet-unknown ultra-wide-angle camera.
There will be a 16MP front-facing camera for selfies, video calls, and face unlock.

All the devices under the upcoming iQOO Z8 series should pack 5000mAh battery packs.
However, only the iQOO Z8, and presumably the iQOO Z8 Pro, could support 120W wired charging, while the base model could be restricted to 44W wired fast charging, which is even lower than the 80W charging speed supported by the iQOO Z7x.

The iQOO Z8 series should be available in vibrant shades of Black, Blue, and Isle of Man Green. These devices should run Android 13 with a custom layer of Origin OS 3.0.

iPhones Embrace RCS Messaging Through Beeper,

Highlights

  • iPhones now support RCS Messaging via Beeper, a long-awaited step towards compatibility with Android devices.
  • End-to-end encryption, read receipts, typing indicators and more are now accessible on iPhones via Beeper.
  • Some known issues with RCS on iPhones via Beeper exist, but this milestone opens new doors in mobile communication.

For years, iPhones have remained isolated from the Rich Communication Services (RCS) revolution, leading to a disconnect in messaging capabilities between Apple and Android devices.

This absence of RCS support in iPhones has long been considered a significant hindrance to achieving seamless cross-platform communication.

Now, the unexpected arrival of RCS on iPhones through the Beeper app has shattered this barrier, marking an unprecedented development in the messaging sphere.

Why RCS on iPhones is a Big Deal

RCS on iPhones

RCS is seen as a supercharged replacement for traditional SMS. It brings features like end-to-end encryption, read receipts, typing indicators, and more, adding richness to text messaging.

Google has championed this protocol, promoting widespread adoption across Android devices.

However, Apple had held back from implementing RCS, choosing to stick with its proprietary iMessage system.

While iMessage offers similar features to RCS, it lacks cross-platform compatibility with Android devices, maintaining a divide in messaging experience between the two ecosystems.

Beeper’s Solution: How It Works

Beeper’s Solution: How It Works

Beeper, an app that works as an aggregator of several chatting services, in its latest update, provided RCS-support on Google Messages for iPhones.

This breaks down a long-standing wall between the two platforms heralding a new era in cross-platform communication.

Once users download and activate the RCS-supported Google Messages feature within Beeper (currently in beta), they can enjoy enhanced messaging functionalities, including sending and receiving emoji reactions between iPhone and Android devices.

This promising advancement is not without teething problems. Known issues include the absence of display picture avatars, incomplete past history synchronisation, and the lack of support for group read receipts and typing indicators.
Beeper is actively working on resolving these issues ahead of the full release.

To enable RCS messaging on an iPhone, users must download the latest Beeper Desktop version (3.70.17) and follow specific steps within the application.
It is quite important to note that Beeper operates a waitlist for new users, which may result in a significant waiting period for access.

X users are discovering that images and links shared before 2014 are vanishing from the platform.

Tom Coates, an X user, was reportedly among the first to notice and share the search results of his posts from this time frame, revealing the absence of images and links. Whether it’s a broken hyperlink or an invisible image, the content isn’t accessible anymore.

One iconic example is the famous Oscar selfie posted by Ellen DeGeneres, which included stars such as Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meryl Streep.

This image, which was once the most retweeted tweet with 2.8 million reposts and 2 million likes, was not visible on the platform for a long time. It has since been restored, but it seems that it is only one of the few tweets that have been.

The Technical Background

The Verge has traced the issue back to some changes Twitter made in 2016, specifically the addition of expanded URL enrichment in 2012.
This feature “automatically expands shortened URLs included in the body of a Tweet and incorporates the resulting URL as metadata within the payload.”

Further enhancements in URL enrichment, which displayed a website’s HTML title and description in the tweet payload, were introduced later.
These changes came into effect from December 2014, and it seems posts prior to this are the ones affected by the latest glitch.
