Realme 12 5G Review: A Mid-Range Smartphone with High-End Features

0

Highlights

  • Offers a premium design with a vegan leather back and a polished aesthetic.
  • Features a 120Hz FHD+ display for smooth visuals but lacks AMOLED quality.
  • 108MP main camera delivers detailed photos, though night mode could improve.
  • Equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ chipset for balanced performance and efficiency.

The Realme 12 5G is the third entrant in the company’s signature Realme 12 series, following closely on the heels of the Realme 12 Pro lineup launched last month.

While the handset doesn’t claim the premium tag of its predecessors it does impress me, at least on paper, with a slew of top-notch features.

I feel that the Realme 12 5G can deliver considerable value but to be sure it has to be put through the wringer, so to speak.

Let’s delve deeper into what makes this device a compelling choice for smartphone enthusiasts in my complete Realme 12 5G review.

Realme 12 5G: Unboxing

Unpacking the Realme 12 5G feels strikingly similar to the Realme 12 Pro, with the same familiar sequence of unveiling.

Upon lifting the lid, the first thing that meets your eye is the handset itself, its elegant design and prominent features immediately catching your attention.

Tucked underneath the handset, you’ll find the 45W charger, neatly placed.

Accompanying the charger is a USB Type-C cable, a crucial accessory for powering up the device and transferring data.

A separate section of the box houses a transparent silicone cover.

The box also contains standard documentation, offering vital details about the device, and a SIM card removal tool, a necessary gadget for installing your SIM card into the phone.

Holding the Realme 12 5G for the first time, I was impressed by how cleanly it retained the signature look that set its older siblings apart.

In my opinion, this choice contributes a lot to its premium feel and also ensures that the device stands out in its price segment.

The craftsmanship is evident in every aspect of its construction, from the sunburst dial, which creates a light gradient UV texture, to the polished PVD edges that further enhance its appeal.

I have with me the Twilight Purple colour combination which looks just lovely shimmering in the sunlight.

Weighing in at just 188g and with a slim profile of 7.69mm, the device is remarkably comfortable for extended use.

Realme 12 5G:
Realme 12 5G: Display

I have to reiterate that the handset’s resemblance to the Realme 12 Pro series is unmistakable, especially from the exterior, reinforcing the brand’s cohesive design philosophy across its product range.

Moving on to the display the Realme 12 5G is equipped with a 6.72-inch FHD+ screen.

It boasts a 91.4% screen-to-body ratio and the colour reproduction is decent, thanks to its capability to display 16.7 million colours.

Moreover, the 120Hz refresh rate eliminates any blur during fast-paced scenes in games or while scrolling.

The flexibility of having 6-level dynamic refresh rates (45Hz, 48Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz) is also a thoughtful touch.

On the flip side, while the display of the Realme 12 5G is impressive in many respects, it’s only fair to address a few aspects where it falls short of expectations.

First, despite the commendable peak brightness of up to 950 nits, I couldn’t help but feel that the overall brightness could be slightly better in outdoor usage.

Another noteworthy point is that the display technology used here is not AMOLED.

At this price point, AMOLED screens have become increasingly common, offering deeper blacks and more vibrant colours compared to the LCD panel found on the Realme 12 5G.

Additionally, there’s a slight off-axis color shift noticeable when viewing the screen from an angle.

Although this is a common trait among LCD panels, it’s something that could have been mitigated with better technology or calibration.

Despite these drawbacks, the display of the Realme 12 5G remains a strong selling point for everyday use, gaming, and media consumption.

Realme 12 5G: Camera Exploration

Realme 12 5G: Camera Exploration
Realme 12 5G: Camera Exploration

Exploring the camera capabilities of the Realme 12 5G, I do appreciate the device’s dual-camera optical setup.

The highlight is a 108MP sensor with a 24mm equivalent focal length and an f/1.8 aperture, which proved to be a powerhouse during my daylight photography excursions.

Its fast shutter speeds and decent focusing capabilities made capturing high-quality images a breeze.

The dynamic range was particularly commendable, ensuring that photos captured in daylight were not just good but impressive.

The ability to take up to 3X optical zoom crop-ins without significant loss of detail, thanks to the high megapixel count, was a feature I found incredibly useful for capturing distant subjects with clarity.

However, the addition of a 2MP portrait camera felt somewhat superfluous to me.

In a time when software can adeptly handle background separation and portrait effects, a dedicated macro shooter might have been a more practical choice.

The portrait shots, while decent, didn’t stand out, underscoring my belief that software alone could achieve similar, if not better, results in background separation.

Night photography with the Realme 12 5G was as expected for its price bracket.

The AI-based scene detection that attempted to brighten images was a welcome feature, though I noticed focusing speeds took a hit in low-light conditions.

Night mode was more than decent, enhancing my image details to a large degree, albeit sometimes oversaturating colours more than my preference.

The front-facing 8MP selfie camera delivered detailed selfies and supported my video calling needs adequately.

While the Cinematic Bokeh mode was hit-or-miss, standard portrait mode shots generally looked good.

Daylight photography with the Realme 12 5G’s camera setup was where it shone brightest, offering a level of detail and color accuracy that is competitive at this price point.

Although it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the Realme 12 Pro+ in terms of color accuracy or detail.

Realme 5G: Performance Specs

As for the performance of the  Realme 12 5G, I find myself pleasantly surprised by the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ 5G chipset at its core.

This processor, featuring an 8-core configuration with two A76 cores at 2.2 GHz and six A55 cores at 2.0 GHz, strikes a balance between handling demanding tasks smoothly and ensuring energy efficiency for prolonged battery life.

Although the Realme 12 5G may not boast the most powerful processor in its price range, its performance is commendably solid and is evident from the 95% of its maximum performance being maintained even under significant load.

Also, I think the option of expanding the RAM virtually is a growing trend that all OEMs should adopt.

The top configuration offers up to 6GB of RAM plus 256GB of storage, with the possibility of 6GB more via virtual swap.

Navigating through the user interface, I was also impressed by the fluidity of the animations and scrolling thanks to the 120Hz refresh rate.

However, it’s worth noting that for heavy-duty gaming, the device is best suited to medium graphics settings to maintain smooth gameplay at 60fps.

The device’s connectivity features, including stable 5G performance and an efficient side-mounted fingerprint sensor, add to its appeal.

The Dolby Atmos-powered stereo speaker setup is another highlight, offering loud, crisp sound with a lot of depth, enhancing the overall user experience.

It won’t be a stretch to say that the handset is indeed feature-packed.

Realme 12 5G: Software and Battery Life

I’ve come to appreciate Realme’s proprietary RealmeUI 5.0 based on Android 14.

This interface brings several new and exciting features to the table, enhancing my overall user experience.

The Realme 12 5G introduces the upgraded Mini Capsule 2.0, enhancing user interaction and visual appeal across several functionalities.

It incorporates dynamic animations in music playback, showing a rhythm bar that changes color with the music for an immersive experience.

The weather feature provides timely updates with a unique animation once daily post 6 AM, offering a glance at the day’s weather as the device is unlocked.

For calendar events, I get animation alerts for upcoming activities with details on start times, subtly enhancing time management.

Additionally, an upgraded step counter animation is also there but I do have doubts concerning the veracity of its results.

What I don’t like is the constant ads being pushed after installing an app.

Apart from that the bloatware issue in RealmeUI persists.

The Realme 12 5G’s battery life and charging capabilities are pretty good. The device is equipped with a massive 5000mAh battery and offers satisfactory endurance, comfortably supporting extended usage without frequent recharges.

I got about 6 hours of screen-on time with moderate usage, which is something I expect at this price range.

This capacity is particularly notable given the device’s rather form factor and what I found more impressive was the 45W SUPERVOOC charging technology, which rapidly powers the device to 50 percent in just about 30 minutes.

The Realme 12 5G feels like a noteworthy contender in the competitive sub-Rs 20,000 segment, providing me with a balance between performance, design, and features.

Even without its premium pricetag it’s a robust offering in terms of design, display, camera capabilities, and battery life.

Through my experience, it delivered on several fronts, offering a versatile and satisfying user experience that is hard to overlook for its price point

  • Active noise cancellation and dual device connectivity enhance user experience.

  • Impressive battery life with 100 hours of playtime and fast charging capability.

In a market brimming with choices, the Boult Z40 Ultra is a brand-new offering that strikes a balance between price and performance, promising an audio experience that doesn’t break the bank.

With an attractive introductory price tag of Rs 1,999, expectations were high as I delved into what this device had to offer.

Here is my complete Boult Z40 Ultra review.

Boult Z40 Ultra: Unboxing

Boult Z40 Ultra: Unboxing
Boult Z40 Ultra: Unboxing

The unboxing experience was straightforward, yet satisfying.

The packaging was neat and functional, housing the earbuds, a charging case, USB-C cable for charging, extra ear tips for a customized fit, and a user manual.

Everything one needs to get started was included, setting a positive tone for what was to come.

Boult Z40 Ultra: Design and Comfort

Boult Z40 Ultra: Design and Comfort

The first thing that struck me about the Z40 Ultra was its minimalist yet sophisticated design.

Holding them, I felt a sense of premium craftsmanship that isn’t always present in products at this price point.

The earbuds fit snugly in my ears, providing a secure fit that instilled confidence during my jogs and workouts.

As mentioned there are a variety of silicon tips available so that you get the size that fits you.

The touch controls responded with precision to my inputs, making the interaction seamless and intuitive.

Their lightweight design meant I could wear them for hours without any discomfort, a crucial aspect for someone who uses earbuds extensively throughout the day.

It is also very easy to take the earbuds out of the case.

Speaking of which the case itself has a stealthy matte-black colour combo and textured material on the outside.

It charges via USB Type-C port at the bottom and has indicator lines

Boult Z40 Ultra: Features

Boult Z40 Ultra: Features
Boult Z40 Ultra: Features

Diving into the features, the Z40 Ultra proved to be more than just a pair of earbuds.

The active noise cancellation feature was a game-changer for me.

Whether I was in a crowded cafe or amidst city traffic, it allowed me to immerse myself fully in my music.

The dual device connectivity enhanced my productivity, letting me switch between my laptop and smartphone effortlessly.

The inclusion of features like fast charging and IPX5 water resistance not only added to its versatility but also to its durability, making it an all-weather companion.

Unfortunately, the Z40 Ultra does not have any kind of companion app on iOS so customisation is a bit of a limit with these TWS.

Boult Z40 Ultra: Sound Quality, ANC, and Microphone

Boult Z40 Ultra: Sound Quality, ANC, and Microphone
Boult Z40 Ultra: Sound Quality, ANC, and Microphone

Diving into my experience with the Boult Z40 Ultra, the sound quality immediately stood out.

Boult talks of a SonicCore Dynamic processor in the Z40 Ultra which assists with the audio enhancements.

The balanced sound signature, with its emphasis on clarity and detail, made every genre of music I played through them resonate beautifully.

Listening to “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish, the bass felt deep and punchy, enriching the song’s moody ambiance without overshadowing the mids.

The balanced mids brought out the warmth and clarity in “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran, making it feel like a personal performance.

When it came to classical pieces like Beethoven’s “Symphony No.9,” the crisp highs illuminated the symphony’s intricate details, showcasing the Z40 Ultra’s capability to deliver a broad and immersive soundstage.

The Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology enhanced this experience further by effectively muting up to 32dB of external noise, allowing me to lose myself in the music, regardless of my surroundings.

It provided an immersive listening experience that few earbuds in this price range can match.

Moreover, the microphone quality significantly bolstered my call experiences.

The quad-mic setup with environmental noise cancellation (ENC) ensured my voice was transmitted clearly, reducing background noise effectively.

Whether I was in a noisy café or amidst city traffic, calls were crystal clear, making the Z40 Ultra not just a fantastic musical companion but also a reliable tool for both personal and professional communication.

The ENC also proved invaluable for voice assistant commands, recognizing them accurately even in noisy environments.

There’s also some low latency mode for gaming but I couldn’t test that out thoroughly.

Overall, the Boult Z40 Ultra’s sound profile is well-suited for a wide array of musical tastes, from the deep lows of electronic dance music to the high-resolution detail required for classical music, providing an enriching auditory experience that belies its cost-effective pricing.

Boult Z40 Ultra: Battery Life

Boult Z40 Ultra: Battery Life
Boult Z40 Ultra: Battery Life

The battery life of the Z40 Ultra is nothing short of extraordinary.

The promise of 100 hours of playtime with the case was met with skepticism at first, but it lived up to its claims.

The fast charging feature was a lifesaver, providing enough juice for several hours of playback with just a few minutes of charging.

Safe to say a full charge provides enough juice in the bank to last a week without even looking at the charger.

Final Verdict

This period, spanning from January 1 to February 11, witnessed double-digit declines in shipments for several brands, including Apple, which saw a 24% decrease compared to the previous year.

Factors such as low consumer confidence and a paucity of high-profile launches have been identified as key contributors to the sluggish start.

Built on TSMC’s latest second-generation 4nm process technology, Phone (2a) effortlessly powers through any task with unparalleled power efficiency and blazing speed.

Paired with an expansive 20 GB RAM with RAM Booster technology, the 8-core chip – clocking speeds up to 2.8 GHz – ensures swift and responsive multitasking all day long. This results in a performance that is 13% more powerful than Phone (1) and 16% more efficient.

Together, Nothing and MediaTek have introduced optimisations such as Smart Clean (+200% UFS read/write speed over prolonged usage) and Adaptive NTFS (+100% file transfer speeds with Windows computers) and have been able to reduce power consumption of specific components by up to 10%.

How is the Battery and Charging of nothing phone(2a)?

At 5,000 mAh, Phone (2a) contains Nothing’s smartphone biggest battery to date, delivering up to two days of use on a full charge. Not only is it larger, it also performs better. From Phone (1), Nothing has increased battery longevity by over 25%.

This means it can maintain over 90% of its maximum capacity after 1,000 charging cycles, corresponding to over three years of daily charging. The battery also has a 13% reduction in temperature when charging and discharging compared to Phone (1), which contributes to its longevity.

For rapid power-ups, Phone (2a) supports 45W Fast Charging, delivering 50% of power in just 20 minutes. An optimal charging solution that avoids the risk of depleting battery life, often related to higher watt count and charging speeds.

How is the Camera of nothing phone (2a)?

The TrueLens Engine is a series of advanced computational algorithms that come together to ensure every shot taken on Phone (2a) is as close to real life as possible.

This includes Ultra XDR, which has been co-developed with Google to ensure a more accurate display of highlights and shadows in every shot.

It works by capturing 8 frames at different exposure levels in RAW format, and then adjusting the brightness of each pixel up to 5 times to display the most true-to-life result.

For landing the perfect selfies anytime, anywhere, Phone (2a) has an exceptional 32 MP front camera that uses the same sensor as Phone (2), which has 27% more light sensitivity versus Phone (1) and enables more details to come through.

How is the Display of Phone (2a)?

Phone (2a) has a 6.7” flexible AMOLED display, which means it can deliver stunningly accurate colour reproduction of 1.07 billion colours while minimising battery consumption.

Also, with a peak brightness of 1,300 nits, Phone (2a) delivers an uncompromised viewing experience even in the brightest outdoor conditions.

With a refresh rate of 120 Hz, Phone (2a) provides sublimely smooth interactions that dynamically adapts to the content displayed. This goes down to 30 Hz for videos and still to preserve battery.

Phone (2a) features the thinnest bezels in Nothing’s smartphone line-up, measuring just 2.1 mm symmetrically on all four sides of the screen.

This achievement results in an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 91.65%, made possible through the combination of a flexible panel with structural engineering improvements.

How is the Design of Phone (2a)?

Phone (2a) is the ultimate representation of Nothing’s unique design expression. In fact, it embodies the first-ever internal smartphone design concept that was created all the way back in 2020, a few months after Nothing launched.

With Phone (2a), by placing the cameras inside the NFC coil, Nothing has created a new product icon: the eyes. Behind these is the hub of intelligence that powers the phone, much like a brain.

Phone (2a) features an industry-first with its 90° angle unibody cover wrapping around the edges to create a new dimension and perspective to Nothing’s design, while seamlessly integrating the dual camera module. Not only is this structure aesthetically pleasing, it makes the device sturdier, with a notable improvement on drop test results.

Adding to the cohesion between form and function, the unique camera ‘bump’ also plays a role in stabilising the phone when it’s lying flat on a surface as well as helping minimise finger obstructions when taking a picture.

What’s new with Nothing OS in Nothing Phone (2a)?

Phone (2a) enters the market with Nothing OS 2.5. Unlike the majority of the devices in this category, it comes with Android 14 out of the box, with an impressive 3 years of software updates and 4 years security updates.

With Nothing OS 2.5, Nothing has expanded its library with even more Nothing-designed widgets, with swipeable views and animations for more levels of information and interactions on your home screen.

The new Glyph Interface still retains the new capabilities of Phone (2), including the Glyph Timer and Glyph Progress that utilises 3rd party integrations, whilst contributing to the distinct aesthetic of Phone (2a)’s new back design with a unique trio-light configuration.

How is Phone (2a) focussed on Sustainability?

Phone (2a) delivers Nothing’s lowest carbon footprint in a smartphone. At 52 kg, it’s 12.5% lower than that of Phone (1). With sustainability goals in mind, Nothing has developed a brand-new recycling process in Nothing’s manufacturing plant, which allows for plastic waste from the Ear (2) production line to be repurposed into Phone (2a).

Nothing has also maintained its commitment to plastic-free packaging, using recycled fibre instead. The device itself also contains a number of recycled materials:

● 100% recycled aluminium used in the mid frame
● 100% recycled tin on 6 circuit boards
● 100% recycled copper foil on the main circuit board
● Recycled steel on 22 steel stamping parts
● Over 50% of the plastic parts are sustainably sourced

Technological Implications and Future Roadmap
Renaming renaming of its second-generation 3nm process to “2nm” can be seen as a strategic move

Samsung’s SF2 technology, originally known as SF3, incorporates gate-all-around (GAA) transistors, specifically Multi-Bridge-Channel Field Effect Transistors (MBCFET).

“Samsung Electronics’ second-generation 3nm (2nm) process design kit (PDK) has been released, so if Samsung rushes into mass production this year, they will be well-positioned to do so. As for the specific mass production time, it depends largely on customer requirements” said a semiconductor insider to ZDNet.

Samsung Foundry’s decision to rename its 3nm-class technology to SF2 is part of a strategic effort to simplify its process nomenclature and strengthen its position against competitors, particularly Intel Foundry.

What implications does the renaming have for Samsung Foundry’s customers?

Customers who had contracts for the SF3 production node were required to revise their agreements to reflect the change to SF2, indicating a seamless transition in naming without altering the underlying technology.

When will Samsung start manufacturing chips using the SF2 technology?

Samsung plans to begin chip production using the newly named SF2 technology in the second half of 2024, following its rebranding initiative.

Does the SF2 technology have any competitive disadvantages?

While the SF2 technology incorporates advanced gate-all-around (GAA) transistors, it lacks a backside power delivery network (BSPDN), putting it at a competitive disadvantage compared to Intel’s 20A process technology.

Will there be further name changes in Samsung Foundry’s technology roadmap?

Given the recent renaming of SF3 to SF2, there is speculation that other nodes in Samsung Foundry’s technology roadmap might also undergo renaming to maintain consistency and clarity.

Threads App Update Unveils Swipe Controls for Streamlined Navigation

Threads App Update

Highlights

  • Introduces swipe controls for easy content interaction.
  • Right swipe to like, left swipe to hide posts in the “For You” feed.
  • Gesture controls enhance user experience, mirroring other social platforms.
  • Swipe feature currently exclusive to the “For You” feed.

Meta’s Threads app has recently updated its iOS application to version 321.0, introducing a feature that’s set to improve how users engage with content.

This latest enhancement, primarily focused on the “For You” feed, integrates swipe controls to streamline content interaction, marking a significant step towards a better user experience.

The update is simple and efficient.

With the new swipe control feature, Threads users can now like or conceal posts with a mere swipe—a right swipe to like a post and a left swipe to hide it from the feed.

This integration of gesture controls aligns Threads more closely with other social platforms such as Twitter and Mastodon, which have successfully incorporated similar navigational gestures for a while now.

The latest Threads iOS update (v 321.0) introduces new in-app swipe controls, making it easier than ever to navigate through the "For You" feed.

Although there hasn’t been an official announcement from the Threads account or Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, there is buzz created by users on social media, alongside shared screenshots showcasing the swipe functionality.

More than likely, the feature is in beta testing mode with a selected list of few that experience the feature and give Meta feedback.

It’s noteworthy that, as of now, these swipe controls are exclusively functional within the “For You” feed—Threads’ algorithmically curated content stream.

The Following tab, home to posts from accounts a user chooses to follow, remains untouched by this update.

Given the “For You” feed’s popularity as the primary browsing option for many, this decision to pilot swipe gestures here could significantly influence user interaction patterns, potentially encouraging closer engagement with content from well-followed contacts.

For those eager to immerse in the enhanced Threads experience, the process is straightforward: head to the App Store, download or update to the latest Threads app version, and dive into the “For You” feed to navigate through content with the newly introduced swipe gestures.

In addition to the algorithmic "For you" feed, Threads has a "Following" tab, which includes the posts from those you actually follow

Android Auto Update Introduces New Safety Features To Block  the Usage of Certain Apps While You Are Driving

Android Auto

Highlights

  • New feature restricts app usage while driving to enhance safety.
  • Apps now display a “P” icon to indicate parking-only access.
  • Summarization of long text messages to reduce driver distraction.
  • Version 11.4 update focuses on minimizing in-car distractions.

Android Auto has introduced a significant feature aimed at promoting safer driving practices.

The version 11.4 update brings a focused approach to minimizing distractions by restricting access to specific apps while the vehicle is in motion, signifying a major step towards Android Auto’s “Don’t phone and drive” policy.

Streamlining In-Car App Usage

Streamlining In-Car App Usage

The update introduces a visual cue for apps that are restricted while the car is moving.

These apps will now feature a small “P” icon located at the bottom right corner on the home screen, indicating they are only accessible when the vehicle is parked.

This change is particularly noticeable with gaming and video streaming apps, which are typically not intended for use while driving.

However, exceptions are made for electric vehicle owners who can enjoy apps like GameSnacks, designed for touchscreen interaction, during charging periods.

This adjustment aims to clarify app usage rules within Android Auto, addressing previous user confusions encountered with app access restrictions during motion.

By making these limitations clear, Android Auto enhances its user interface and makes a safer driving environment, preventing attempts to engage with certain apps while on the move.

How many of us will actually follow it, remains to be seen.

Focusing on Driver Attention

Furthering its commitment to road safety, Android Auto now offers a feature to manage lengthy text messages.

With the goal of reducing driver distraction, the system will now summarize texts longer than 40 words, while shorter messages will be read aloud in their entirety.

This functionality ensures that drivers can stay informed without diverting their attention from the road to their screens.

However, users are advised to approach the summarization cautiously, as the condensed version of messages may not fully capture the original text’s essence.

Although the summarized messages provide a quick glance at the content, checking the complete message when safely parked remains advisable for a comprehensive understanding.

FAQs

What does the “P” icon mean in the latest Android Auto update?

The “P” icon indicates that certain apps are only accessible when the vehicle is parked, helping to reduce distractions while driving.

How does Android Auto handle long text messages in the new update?

Android Auto now summarizes messages longer than 40 words to lessen distraction. Messages under this limit will be read in full, ensuring drivers can stay focused on the road.

Are all apps restricted while driving with the new Android Auto update?

Not all apps are restricted; the update mainly targets gaming and video streaming apps, which now show a “P” icon when the vehicle is in motion.

Can I still use navigation apps with the new Android Auto restrictions?

Yes, navigation apps remain accessible while driving. The restrictions primarily apply to apps that are not essential for driving, like games and video streaming.

Will I be able to choose which apps are restricted while driving?

The restriction settings are pre-determined by Android Auto based on the app’s nature to ensure driver safety. Users cannot customize which apps are restricted.
