Threads, has surged to an impressive 150 million monthly active users, according to the company’s first quarter 2024 earnings report announced by CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Of interest is the rollercoaster ride for Threads, where active daily users fell by an astonishing 82% from launch day after about a month.

Most of these users seem to be returning to the platform.

Challenging Decentralized

TechCrunch has reported the new platform will rival decentralized social media outfits such as Mastodon, since this new platform will allow U.S. users over 18 to link their accounts to the “Fediverse” using the ActivityPub protocol.

Threads users’ posts will thus be visible beyond the app’s network over many servers, similar to how X is doing it right now.

Integration into the Meta Ecosystem

While AI chatbots are used across Meta’s Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram, Threads is not included because there is no actual direct messaging.

However, Meta plans to release a Threads API to third-party developers by June, enabling them to create their own custom apps and experiences that will work with the Threads network.

In a statement shared by Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram and Threads, on Wednesday, he said the feature to archive posts on the application is being experimented with “with a small number of people.”
