5G smartphone sales outshine 4G handsets for first time globally: Know how it happened

The global sales penetration of 5G-enabled smartphones surpassed the penetration of 4G phones for the first time, reaching 51% in January this year, revealed a new study by Counterpoint Research.

China, North America and Western Europe happened to be the biggest drivers of this growth. China, in particular, had the highest 5G penetration in the world at 84% in January. The push for 5G from Chinese telecom operators, combined with the readiness of OEMs to supply competitively priced 5G smartphones to consumers, enabled this growth, said Counterpoint.

Apple dominates

The 5G smartphone penetration for North America and Western Europe touched 73% and 76% respectively, as per the study. Both these regions were dominated by iPhone-maker Apple with a sales share of more than 50% and 30% respectively.

North America and Western Europe witnessed a likely upsurge in the sales penetration of 5G smartphones after Apple shifted to the next-generation telecom technology in October 2020 with the iPhone 12 series.

According to Counterpoint Research, these regions are anticipated to continue contributing significantly to 5G sales worldwide, as even without offering competitive specs, there is an immense and ongoing demand for a 5G upgrade within the iOS user base.

This demand, as per the study, is also driven by iPhone users who are ready for new devices after years of holding on to their older iPhones. For many, holding periods are nearing four years, the average replacement cycle for iPhones.

Mid-to-high price segment

Android 5G smartphones entered the mid-to-high ($250-$400) price segment because of the affordable processors offered by MediaTek and Qualcomm. They are now trickling down to the $150-$250 price range, contributing one-fifth of the 5G sales in January.

Amidst all these developments, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Latin America are the next focus areas for OEMs to increase 5G penetration. 5G models in the sub-$150 price segment are the sweet spot for these regions, which are currently dominated by 4G, said the study.

According to Counterpoint Research, the low-end 5G SoC is priced more than $20 at present. Once it comes down to sub-$20, we will start seeing 5G smartphones in the budget segment.

The much-awaited Google Pixel 7 series is expected to be unveiled later this year. A lot has been said and written about the upcoming Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones in a series of leaks every now and then. In a latest development, there’s an interesting revelation around the Pixel 7’s display specifications.

As per reports quoting analyst Ross Young, the munch-anticipated Google Pixel 7 is tipped to feature a smaller 6.3-inch display as against the Pixel 6’s 6.4-inch screen. While there is a possibility of the phones being released earlier than expected i.e. in the month of September, if the latest leak is to be believed, the Pixel 7 series’ display panels would begin delivering a month earlier, in May.

Besides, the Pixel 7 Pro, in particular, claims (courtesy Young) to include an LTPO panel with 120Hz refresh rate. Interestingly, this is similar to its predecessor Pixel 6 Pro. However, there is no sign of the regular Google Pixel 7 coming up with a high refresh rate.

Although there is no additional information available, the rumour mill brings to fore some clues to examine. And if you go by these hints, the Pixel 7 series is said to feature a dual-tone design, and a similar camera visor at the back, akin to the Pixel 6 phones. It is also expected to house a punch-hole display.

On the other hand, the Pro model will consist of larger rear camera housings and a less prominent camera bump.

As per reports, these two phones, Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, are codenamed Cheetah and Panther, respectively and they are likely to feature the next-gen Tensor SoC, improved cameras, massive batteries, and more.

LG launches new earbuds in India

LG Tone Free FP Series earphones

LG Electronics has announced the ‘LG Tone Free FP Series earphones’ in India for Rs 13,990. The earphones come with a one-of-a-kind UVnano charging cradle that uses ultraviolet light to sanitise the earbuds and kill 99.9% of microorganisms. The earbuds are equipped with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), which is designed to minimise high-frequency noise. By providing an equal level of anti-noise, the improved ANC shuts out extraneous sound. According to the company, the upgraded driver can properly detect and suppress noise, resulting in a truly high-fidelity experience that allows users to thoroughly immerse themselves in whatever they are listening to.

The latest smartphone from Vivo’s sub-brand iQoo has been released in India. The device is the successor to the iQoo Z5 5G that was launched in the country last year. The iQoo Z6 5G will be available in India starting March 22 through Amazon. The tablet will come in three RAM and storage options: 4GB + 128GB, 6GB + 128GB, and 8GB + 128GB. The variant with 4GB RAM will cost you Rs 15,999. The variants with 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM are priced at Rs 16,999 and Rs 17,999 respectively.

Realme to launch GT Neo 3 in China on March 22

Realme is preparing to introduce the GT Neo 3 smartphone in China. The company has already confirmed the March 22 launch date on the Chinese microblogging platform Weiboo. The company announced the launch date with a banner and video on the platform’s official handle. The smartphone design, as well as the rear camera module, is revealed in the ad and movie. According to the promotional poster, the Realme GT Neo 3 has Le Mans-inspired stripes underneath the camera module.

Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro series to launch on March 17

Samsung will unveil six new Galaxy Book laptops in India on March 17, according to a report. The South Korean tech giant will unveil a portfolio that includes the Galaxy Book 2, Galaxy Book 2 360, Galaxy Book 2 Pro, Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360, Galaxy Book 2 Business, and an affordable Galaxy Book Go, according to a company executive who talked to the outlet. Windows 11 will be pre-installed on all laptops. The Galaxy Book 2 Pro and Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 are listed on Samsung’s own e-store for India, although they are simply listed as upcoming.

Expanding its Z series lineup, iQOO today launched a new smartphone called iQOO Z6 5G in India. The smartphone comes equipped with Snapdragon 695 5G SoC, 120Hz FHD+ display, up to 8GB + 4GB extended RAM capabilities and 5,000mAh battery as its USPs in the sub-20K segment. This launch comes close on the heels of iQOO 9 series premium smartphones that were on February 23.

iQOO Z6 5G Price

The all-new iQOO Z6 5G is effectively priced at Rs 13,999 for 4GB+128GB, Rs 14,999 for 6GB+128GB and Rs 15,999 for 8GB+128GB variant. It comes in two colour options – Dynamo Black and Chromatic Blue, and will be available for purchase on Amazon starting March 22. Customers will get Rs 2,000 instant discounts on HDFC Bank Cards and all EMI transactions.

iQOO Z6 5G Specifications

The iQOO Z6 5G features a 6.58-inch FHD+ display with 120Hz refresh rate, a 90.61 per cent screen to body ratio and 2408×1080 pixels resolution. It offers a 240Hz touch sampling rate and is protected by Panda Glass layer. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chipset with Adreno 619 GPU for graphics, the smartphone runs Android 12-based Funtouch 12 custom skin. It comes packed with up to 8GB RAM and 128GB storage which can be expanded up to 1TB via a microSD card.

On the camera front, the smartphone offers a triple rear camera setup – a 50-megapixel primary sensor with Eye AF, f/1.8 aperture, a 2-megapixel macro sensor and a 2-megapixel portrait lens. Talking about the rear camera features, it includes Night mode, Portrait mode (they are not available in the 4GB RAM option), Aura screen light, and others. Up front, there is a 16-megapixel sensor for selfies and video chats. The smartphone weighs 187 grams and measures 75.84 X 164 X 8.25mm.

There is a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for security and a five-layer 1445mm-square vapour chamber system, which as per the company, lowers the surface temperature by about 3-degree centigrade and for about 10-degree centigrade during intensive gaming. The handset gets its juice from a 5,000mAh battery. It offers 5G, 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 5.1, and a USB Type-C port, in terms of connectivity.

iQOO Wireless Sport neckband

Alongside the iQOO Z6 5G smartphone, the handset maker also launched the iQOO Wireless Sport neckband, which is particularly made for gaming sessions. It comes packed with the large 11.2mm moving coil and runs up to 18 hours. The neckband features IPX4 rating, which makes it suitable for all weather conditions. It is priced at Rs 1,799, and will be available on the company’s website and Amazon.
