Google Streamlines Assistant Features with Google Keep Integration

0

Highlights

  • Google phases out legacy note and list system for a seamless Google Keep experience.
  • Automatic migration of most notes and lists to Google Keep announced.
  • Certain extensive notes and lists may face migration challenges.
  • Integration allows Google Assistant access to Google Keep data with user permission.

Google has ushered in changes to its legacy note and list system, paving the way for Google Keep to take the helm.

A transformation long overdue, given the outdated and somewhat cumbersome user experience previously offered through assistant.google.com/lists/mainview and the separate Google Shopping List found at shoppinglist.google.com.

At the heart of this shift is the seamless integration of the two aforementioned platforms into Google Keep.

Users can breathe a sigh of relief, as Google assures that the transition of notes and lists will occur automatically, with minimal intervention required.

This means the vast majority of content stored in the legacy system will find its way into the more modern and cohesive Google Keep environment.

However, it’s not all smooth sailing.
Google did sound a note of caution regarding potential hiccups during the migration.

Items that might face migration challenges include:

  • Family notes crafted on Smart Displays.
  • Notes or lists having titles that exceed 999 characters.
  • Notes sprawling beyond 19,999 characters.
  • Lists populated with over 999 items or any item whose length surpasses 999 characters.

For those who find themselves in such edge cases, there’s no cause for alarm.
Google will retain this data, making it accessible through Google Takeout until May 1, 2024.

Once safely nestled in Google Keep, users will find their migrated content marked distinctly, helping them identify notes and lists from the legacy system.

Another compelling aspect of this shift is the synergy between Google Keep and Google Assistant.

Users keen on leveraging this partnership will, however, need to grant explicit permissions to Google Assistant.

This can be conveniently managed through the Assistant settings available on both iOS and Android devices, allowing users to opt for Google Keep as their primary notes and lists provider.

FAQs

How can users access notes that couldn’t be migrated?

Notes that face migration challenges will be available through Google Takeout until May 1, 2024.

Can Google Assistant access my Google Keep data?

Yes, but only with explicit user permission. This can be managed through Assistant settings on iOS or Android devices.

  • Foxconn, the primary manufacturer, produced 80 percent of these India-assembled iPhones.
  • Luxshare is gradually moving its production to India.
  • Apple aims to begin iPhone 17’s initial production in India by late 2024.

In an unprecedented shift in Apple’s global production chain, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo disclosed that a staggering 14 percent of all iPhone units shipped in 2023 bore the “Made in India” tag.

Such an incline indicates Apple’s successful stride towards diversifying its manufacturing hubs.

A Dive into Production Stats

Breaking down the numbers, Foxconn, a chief player in the tech manufacturing sector, accounted for a whopping 80 percent of these Indian-assembled iPhones.

Historically, Apple’s heavy dependence on China for its iPhone assembly met hurdles, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where several manufacturing facilities faced temporary shutdowns.

This pause reportedly drained Apple’s coffers by a billion dollars weekly.
Moreover, geopolitical friction between the US and China added another layer of complexity for Apple’s Chinese suppliers.

Highlights

  • M3 chip boasts up to 20% improved performance over M2.
  • Standard M3 features 8-core CPU and a potent 10-core GPU.
  • M3-equipped laptop likely a 14-inch MacBook Pro.
  • Old Intel m3 pales in comparison with just 700 single-core score.

Apple’s much-touted M3 chip, unveiled during their “Scary Fast” event, has undergone the Geekbench litmus test, and the results are nothing short of impressive.

With a surge in both single-core and multi-core performance, Apple’s claims of an enhancement over its predecessors seem to be right on the money.

Benchmarks Breakdown

Diving deep into the metrics, courtesy of 9to5Mac, the M3 chip records benchmark scores of approximately 3,000 for single-core and an astounding 11,700 for multi-core performance.

This marks a significant leap from the M2 chip’s scores, which settled around 2,600 for single-core and 9,700 for multi-core performance.

When stacked against the earlier M1 chip, which had scores of around 8,315 in multi-core, the M3’s performance growth is evident.

Notably, the M2 chip itself had showcased a 17% improvement from the M1.
The M3, meanwhile, stands tall with a 20% uplift in performance compared to the M2.

MacBook Pro or iMac?

While the exact device running the M3 chip during these tests remains shrouded in ambiguity, indicators suggest that it’s likely a laptop.

The benchmark results sport a “Mac15,3” identifier, a tag that seasoned tech journalist Mark Gurman from Bloomberg associated with a laptop bearing a 14-inch MacBook Pro’s display resolution.

A Closer Look at M3

M3 Max
M3 Max

Apart from its roaring speed, the standard M3 chip boasts an 8-core CPU and can support a GPU with up to 10 cores.

Apple engineers have endowed it with features fit for modern-day gaming, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading capabilities, setting the stage for ultra-realistic gaming experiences.

The chip also integrates a robust 16-core Neural Engine, designed explicitly for AI-intensive tasks.

Memory is no constraint either, with support for a whopping 24GB of unified memory.

Comparing Apples with Apples

Benchmarks not only gauge a product’s potential but also validate official claims.

In Apple’s case, the Geekbench database showcased the base model M3 MacBook Pro scoring approximately 3,000 in single-core tests and about 11,000 in multi-core.

When juxtaposed with the M2 MacBook Air and M1 iMac, it becomes evident that the M3 leads by about 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively.

It’s essential to view these numbers with a pinch of salt.

Although benchmarking offers a lens to examine a device’s capabilities, real-world performance can sometimes paint a different picture.

FAQs

How does the M3 chip’s performance compare to its predecessors?

Apple’s new M3 chip showcases around 20% better performance than the M2 chip, making it one of the fastest chips in Apple’s lineup to date.

Is the M3 chip tailored for gaming?

Absolutely. The M3 chip is equipped with advanced features such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, ensuring a heightened gaming experience.

Which device was tested with the M3 chip in these benchmarks?

While not explicitly stated, indicators point towards a laptop, potentially the 14-inch MacBook Pro, given the “Mac15,3” identifier in the test results.

How does the new M3 compare to the Intel m3 used in 2016?

The advancements are evident. While the Intel m3 scored about 700 in single-core tests, Apple’s new M3 has skyrocketed to scores around 3,000, showcasing significant technological growth.

Massive Data Breach Affecting 81.5 Crore Indians Contained Only 10% Aadhaar Information

Digital Personal Data Protection Act

Highlights

  • Resecurity exposes data breach impacting over 81.5 crore Indian citizens.
  • Data sold by pwn0001 mainly includes names, phone numbers, and addresses.
  • Only 10 percent  of the data set contains Aadhaar information.
  • Breach occurs as India passes Digital Personal Data Protection Act, yet to be implemented.

In a significant development, the American cybersecurity agency Resecurity recently exposed a massive data breach affecting over 81.5 crore Indian citizens.

The data, being sold on the dark web by an individual using the alias ‘pwn0001,’ reportedly contains Aadhaar and Passport details.

However, the narrative takes a twist as pwn0001 reveals that only 10% of the data set has Aadhaar details, with only a few thousand records including passport information.

The Scale of the Breach

The data set in question was purchased from a now-defunct dark web forum last year for a sum of $50,000 (Rs 41.64 lakh), according to a report by MoneyControl.

The data set includes names, phone numbers, passport numbers, Aadhar numbers, and several other personal details.

While the database was advertised to contain Aadhaar and Passport details primarily, the actual composition tells a different story.

Digital Personal Data Protection Act

Limited Aadhaar Exposure

pwn0001, the individual selling this data, has stated that the database isn’t as lucrative as it was originally marketed.

Only a fraction—10%—contains Aadhaar details. Even within that, only a few thousand records boast of having passport details.

Resecurity’s HUNTER team has corroborated this, claiming to have verified some Aadhaar Card IDs from the sample data provided.

The data breach comes at a time when India has passed the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.

This law posits that platforms leaking personal data can face fines up to Rs 250 crore.

However, the law hasn’t been implemented yet, creating a window of vulnerability.

Another breach reported by Resecurity in August further indicates that data security remains a concern, notwithstanding the yet-to-be-enforced laws.

FAQs

Who exposed the data breach?

Resecurity, an American cybersecurity agency, was the first to report the massive data breach involving Indian citizens.

What types of data are included in the breach?

The data includes names, phone numbers, addresses, and in a limited number of cases, Aadhaar and Passport details.

How much of the breached data contains Aadhaar details?

Only 10% of the entire data set includes Aadhaar details, according to the individual selling the data under the alias pwn0001.

Is India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act in force?

Though India has passed the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, it has not yet been implemented, leaving a gap in data protection measures.

Samsung Launches Auto Blocker

Highlights

  • Samsung rolls out Auto Blocker on Galaxy devices running One UI 6.
  • Auto Blocker feature offers prevention of unauthorized app sideloading.
  • Additional controls include app security checks and USB software installation prevention.
  • Message Guard updated to mitigate Zero Click attacks across multiple messaging apps.

Samsung has announced Auto Blocker, a new addition to its security features available on Galaxy devices running the One UI 6 interface.

This new package aims to give users more control over their device’s security measures.

Auto Blocker happens to be an opt-in feature that comes with various capabilities, including preventing sideloading and offering security checks for apps.

User-Centric Design Philosophy

Dr. Seungwon Shin, EVP & Head of Security Team at Samsung Electronics, stated that the company aims to put the control back in the hands of users.

According to Dr. Shin, Samsung is focused on allowing users to choose the level of security that best meets their needs rather than making that decision for them.

Features of Auto Blocker

  • Prevention of App Sideloads: The feature prevents the installation of apps from unauthorized sources, an activity commonly known as sideloading.
However, for users who intentionally sideload apps for enhanced customization, this feature is turned off by default.
  • App Security Checks: Auto Blocker also provides the ability to turn on security checks for apps, aimed at detecting potential malware.
  • USB Security: It prevents harmful software installations that could happen through a USB cable—important for scenarios where someone could have physical access to the device.
  • Message Guard Update: An update has been provided to the existing Message Guard feature, designed to mitigate Zero Click attacks, particularly those that come from image messages in third-party apps.

Security in Open Ecosystems

Auto Blocker supports the idea of an open ecosystem by providing an opt-in package of additional security measures.

It does not interfere with users who prefer to sideload apps but offers an extra layer of security to those who wish to avoid potential threats like voice phishing attacks or social engineering tactics.
