A man from California managed to get his stolen BMW back by tracking it with an Apple AirTag and using dash cam footage.

Pretty nifty right?

Read on to find out how it could have gone so very wrong

The Incident

Philip Obando woke up one morning to find his BMW missing from outside his house.

Luckily, he had hidden an AirTag in the vehicle and had dash cam video installed, which provided clues about when and how the car was stolen.

Using Apple’s Find My app, Obando could see the AirTag’s location as the thief drove the BMW around Long Beach.

The footage showed the culprit sleeping in the car overnight, swapping out the license plates, and even taking it through a car wash.

Obando got an extra break when he discovered the thief had left his wallet behind in the vehicle.

The Confrontation

Against advice, and urged on by his wife, Obando located the stolen BMW and confronted the thief directly.

To prove ownership, he used the car’s spare key fob to remotely sound the horn.

Surprisingly, instead of turning violent, the thief simply fled the scene on foot when faced with evidence he had been caught.

Obando then found several knives left inside by the thief.

While Obando successfully retrieved his car himself, law enforcement strongly cautions against confronting criminals, which can turn extremely dangerous.

Police in some areas like D.C. and New York actively promote using AirTags to track stolen vehicles and recoverthem with police assistance.

However, other agencies like San Antonio have warned that directly tracking items can potentially put people at risk of harm.

FAQs

How did the AirTag help in recovering the stolen BMW?

The owner used an AirTag hidden in his BMW to track the vehicle through Apple’s Find My app, allowing him to see the car’s movements and ultimately locate it.

What risks are associated with confronting a car thief directly?

Confronting a thief can be dangerous, as the situation may escalate to violence. It’s safer to involve the police when retrieving stolen property based on tracking devices.

What did the dash cam footage reveal about the thief’s actions?

The footage captured the thief sleeping in the car, changing license plates, and even taking the car for a wash, helping the owner confirm the car’s location and thief’s identity.

Why do police recommend using tracking devices like AirTags for stolen vehicles?

Tracking devices can help law enforcement recover stolen property more efficiently and safely, minimizing the risk to the owner.

What should someone do if they find their stolen vehicle using a tracking device?

It’s recommended to contact local law enforcement to safely recover the vehicle rather than confronting the thief, as personal safety is paramount.

Instagram Tests New Archiving Feature on Threads for Enhanced Privacy

Instagram Tests New Archiving Feature on Threads for Enhanced Privacy

Highlights

  • Instagram introduces a test feature for automatic post archiving on Threads.
  • Users can manually archive posts or set them to auto-hide after a specified period.
  • Archived posts can be restored to public view at any time.
  • Feature testing follows user feedback requesting more control over post visibility.

Instagram is testing a new feature on Threads that allows users to automatically hide their old posts after a set period of time.

It is high time that Threads brings this feature.

Even in its nascent stage, several users of the platform might have posted content that they don’t want to delete but also don’t want visible to the public.

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, shared details about this test on his Threads account.

Archiving on Threads

Instagram Tests New Archiving Feature on Threads for Enhanced Privacy
Instagram Tests New Archiving Feature on Threads for Enhanced Privacy

Currently, the archiving option is only available to a small group of users.

Those in the test group can manually archive individual posts by tapping three dots next to a post and selecting “Archive now”.

Alternatively, they can set posts to be automatically archived after a certain timeframe.

Mosseri clarified that archived posts won’t be permanently deleted.

Users can choose to make archived posts public again at any time.

The decision to make post archiving optional stemmed from a previous survey.

Threads Could Overtake Twitter’s Dominance
Users can manually archive posts or set them to auto-hide after a specified period

Many Threads users indicated they wouldn’t want old posts automatically hidden by default.

Instagram is still evaluating whether to officially roll out this archiving capability to all Threads users based on testing and feedback.

In recent weeks, Threads has introduced some other new features like filtering search results by most recent posts instead of suggested ones.

However, these updates are also limited tests available to only a portion of users initially.

For a long time, users on Twitter (now X) have requested ways to archive old posts.

Some turned to third-party services to hide their past content.

If Threads proceeds with its archiving option, it would provide a built-in solution.

FAQs

What is the new feature being tested on Threads?

Instagram is testing an archiving option that allows users to either manually archive posts or set them to automatically hide after a certain time period, enhancing user control over content visibility.

How can users archive their posts on Threads?

During the test phase, selected users can archive their posts by tapping the three dots next to a post and selecting “Archive now” or setting an automatic timer for posts to be archived.

Are archived posts on Threads permanently deleted?

No, archived posts are not permanently deleted. Users have the option to make these posts public again whenever they choose.

Why did Instagram decide to test the archiving feature on Threads?

The decision was influenced by user feedback indicating a desire not to have old posts automatically hidden but rather to give users the option to manage their content visibility.

Will all users get access to the new archiving feature on Threads?

Instagram is currently evaluating the feature based on user testing and feedback. The decision to roll it out to all users will depend on the results of this initial testing phase.

Apple’s 12.9-Inch iPad Air to Reportedly Launch Without a Mini-LED Display

0
Apple's 12.9-Inch iPad Air to Reportedly Launch Without a Mini-LED Display

Highlights

  • 9-inch iPad Air confirmed to launch without mini-LED display
  • Decision driven by cost considerations to maintain affordability
  • Apple’s “Let Loose” event scheduled for May 7, expected to reveal new iPad models
  • Mini-LED remains exclusive to higher-end iPad Pro models

There’s a new 12.9-inch iPad Air coming next month but it now seems that there will be no mini-LED display on it after all, contrary to earlier rumours.

A bit of a blow to the heads of Apple fans patiently waiting for the low-cost iPad with a better display tech.

Ross Young, a trustworthy source for Apple news, had initially claimed that the larger 2024 iPad Air would feature mini-LED technology based on information from multiple supply chain sources.

Now he has done a proper U-turn on his stance, stating that even more supply chain sources have confirmed the lack of a mini-LED display on the upcoming tablet.

 Mini-LED iPad Air Unlikely

Apple's 12.9-Inch iPad Air to Reportedly Launch Without a Mini-LED Display
Apple’s 12.9-Inch iPad Air to Reportedly Launch Without a Mini-LED Display

Young explains that it makes sense for Apple to exclude the mini-LED display from the 12.9-inch iPad Air, as it is a more expensive component.

While this news may disappoint those who were looking forward to the improved display technology, the absence of mini-LED is why Apple can position the iPad Air as a more affordable option.

There is a reason by the iPad is one of the highest selling tablets in the world.

So is there any hope for a future iPad Air with a better viewing experience?

Currently, the mini-LED display technology is employed in Apple’s iPad Pro lineup, which positions the devices at a higher price point due to the added cost of the displays.

Understandably, Apple would choose not to include this premium feature in the iPad Air series, which is aimed at a different market segment.

The decision to forgo the mini-LED display on the 12.9-inch iPad Air is likely driven by cost considerations.

While it is unclear whether the move was influenced by surplus mini-LED displays intended for the current iPad Pro models, the exclusion of this technology from the iPad Air lineup is consistent with Apple’s strategy of differentiating its product offerings based on pricing and features.

Apple’s Let Loose Event

Decision driven by cost considerations to maintain affordability
Decision driven by cost considerations to maintain affordability

As Apple gears up for its “Let Loose” event on May 7, expectations are high for refreshed iPad Air and iPad Pro models, both powered by the company’s M2 chip.

While the 11-inch iPad Air is anticipated to receive an update, the introduction of a 12.9-inch model without the mini-LED display will broaden the lineup’s appeal to a wider range of consumers.

FAQs

What is the new feature expectation for the 12.9-inch iPad Air?

Despite earlier rumours, the upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air will not feature a mini-LED display, focusing instead on maintaining an affordable price point.

Why has Apple decided against including mini-LED in the new iPad Air?

Apple aims to keep the iPad Air affordable, and including a costly mini-LED display would raise the price, conflicting with its market positioning.

Will there be any iPad models with mini-LED technology?

Mini-LED technology will continue to be a feature of the higher-priced iPad Pro models, differentiating them from the more budget-friendly iPad Air.

What can we expect from Apple’s upcoming “Let Loose” event?

The event is anticipated to showcase refreshed iPad Air and iPad Pro models, all expected to be equipped with Apple’s M2 chip.

Is there a larger version of the iPad Air being released?

Yes, Apple is set to introduce a 12.9-inch model of the iPad Air at its upcoming event, broadening its appeal with a larger screen option but without mini-LED technology.

Elon Musk’s X To Launch New Smart TV Streaming Service to Challenge YouTube

Highlights

  • High-resolution video streaming with a user-friendly interface
  • AI-powered topic organization and enhanced video search functions
  • Compatible across both smartphones and smart TVs
  • Ad-free launch with plans for future monetization through advertising

Elon Musk’s X platform (formerly Twitter) has made a surprising move to take on video streaming giants like YouTube.

The social media company is set to launch its own smart TV app that will allow users to watch videos on the big screen.

We say surprising, but in the larger context of things, Musk had promised to make X into a super app and this seems like one of the steps taken in that direction.

X TV Streaming Service

Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X, shared details about the upcoming TV app this week.

She stated that the app will offer high-resolution video streaming and will feature a user interface similar to YouTube, making it easy for people to navigate.

The app’s interface teaser video suggests that X’s TV service will have a trending video algorithm to help users stay updated on popular content tailored to their interests.

Also, there will inevitably be some incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI)–powered topic organization, allowing videos to be categorized by subject for a personalized viewing experience.

Apart from that, high on the list of expectations is an enhanced video search function to help users find desired content more efficiently.

Yaccarino mentioned that the TV app will be compatible across devices, enabling seamless viewing on both smartphones and smart TVs.

The plan is to make the app widely available and compatible with most smart TV models soon.

For many users who are constantly being plagued by the ad-fatigue in modern-day OTT services, there is remarkably some respite on the way.

The X TV app’s launch will not initially feature advertisements.

X has stated that their focus is on introducing this new feature for consumers first, but they intend to monetize it through advertising in the future.

The TV app’s release date is still uncertain, as Yaccarino encouraged X users to share their ideas and feedback while the app is still in development.

By launching its own video streaming service, X aims to position itself as a “video-first platform” and attract more creators to share content on the platform.

It’s no secret that X is struggling to be profitable since Elon Musk’s takeover last year.

Perhaps this new feature could sooth some troubled waters, although nothing can be said for sure.

  • Satellite+ enables image sending via satellite in no coverage areas
  • Features a 6.8-inch OLED screen with adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rates
  • Includes a triple camera system with up to 50MP resolution
  • Supports 100W wired and 80W wireless fast charging capabilities

Huawei brought out their newest mobile phones lately, the Pura 70 series.

Lots got updated, enhanced, and talked about as compared to the previous generation, like a zoom lens that pulls in, but the biggest thing by far is a new way to send pictures when your mobile signal is no good – Satellite+.

What is Satellite+?

Huawei Pura 70’s Innovative Satellite+ Feature Can Send Images Without Using the Internet
Huawei Pura 70’s Innovative Satellite+ Feature Can Send Images Without Using the Internet

It’s the first regular phone that can beam pictures through satellites if you’ve no phone service.

Last autumn, Huawei unveiled the Mate 60 Pro as the first to allow actual phone calls via satellite too.

This fresh talent is also in the top Pura 70 Ultra model.

Sending pics by satellite squashes the file size down really small, on account of the limited data speeds.

So the pictures might look blurred or distorted.

Features a 6.8-inch OLED screen with adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rates

That’s why it’s just meant for emergencies when you’re stuck somewhere with no mobile coverage.

To use it properly, both phones need a special app named Changlian.

If the receiving phone hasn’t got it, Bruce Lee from Huawei says they’ll just see a plain text note instead.

Still, it’s a mighty big step forward if it can show your location clearly to get help coming your way sharpish in a pickle.

Apple made satellites usable first, with smart software guiding you to point your iPhone at an overhead satellite you can’t even see.

Plenty of stories out there about lives saved that way.
