Samsung confirms that features like Generative Edit and Instant Slow-mo won’t hit flagship devices like the S22.

Although there has been no sign of the update being in Europe for users to download, Samsung is very fast with these kinds of releases, so it should not take much time before this happens.

There’s currently a bit of an outrage on social media regarding the inability to upload YouTube videos on the website.

Content creators on the platform have started complaining regarding the issue on social media like X (formerly known as Twitter).

The problem involved a situation where videos were uploaded incorrectly since they were still being processed.

However, the issue was quickly addressed by Google who promised developers that a solution was being worked upon and should be available soon.

Because content providers mostly depend on timely uploads for user engagement and revenue, the glitch garnered a lot of attention.

The staff at YouTube responded promptly, informing users via social media and declaring that the problem had been fixed in a matter of hours.

In addition to fixing the upload problems, YouTube has been improving YouTube TV, bringing back the “1080p Enhanced” option that had been taken out for a short while.

Users of Apple TV devices have taken particular notice of this function, which increases the bitrate at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second to boost video quality.

Furthermore, YouTube TV has added further functionality to its Multiview feature, enabling the simultaneous viewing of various channels.

Initially available on iOS, this feature is set to arrive on Android, allowing users to view multiple broadcasts simultaneously, facilitated by YouTube’s server-side processing.

Apart from that YouTube has begun experimenting with a new way to sort and display content from the channels you’re subscribed to.

A small number of mobile users now have access to an optional “Most Relevant” feed for their Subscriptions.

Instead of just showing videos in chronological order as the default feed does, this test mode aims to surface more personalized recommendations.

Apple Shares Soar Despite iPhone Sales Dip, $110 Billion Buyback Fuels Optimism

Apple Shares Soar Despite iPhone Sales Dip, $110 Billion Buyback Fuels Optimism

Highlights

  • Apple’s stock jumps 6% despite a drop in iPhone sales.
  • Record $110 billion share buyback announced.
  • Services revenue hits all-time high, driving growth.
  • New iPad models expected at upcoming product launch event.

Investors are looking unfazed by Apple’s year-over-year dip in fiscal second-quarter earnings, with the Cupertino giant’s shares spiking over 6% after the stock market’s closure.

Should this rally persist into regular Friday trading, it would mark Apple’s steepest stock surge since November 2022.

Pretty great considering the dismal sale numbers being seen across the world for iPhones.

Despite iPhone Sales Stumble, Share Buyback Sparks Optimism

Apple's stock jumps 6% despite a drop in iPhone sales
Apple’s stock jumps 6% despite a drop in iPhone sales

The primary driver behind the stock’s upswing is Apple’s announcement of a mammoth $110 billion share buyback approval – the largest ever for a publicly-listed company.

This has more-or-less quelled any dispersions Wall Street had regarding Apple stock.

Concerns have cropped up Apple said the iPhone experienced a 10% year-over-year sales decline from $51.33 billion to $45.96 billion.

However, this blockbuster buyback seemingly overshadowed any concerns.

“Keep in mind as we described on the last call in the March quarter a year ago, we were able to replenish iPhone channel inventory and fulfill significant pent up demand from the December quarter COVID-related supply disruptions on the iPhone 14 pro and 14 Pro Max,” CEO Tim Cook explained on an earnings call. “We estimate this one time impact is to $5 billion to the March quarter revenue last year. If we remove this from last year’s results, our March quarter total company revenue this year would have grown.”

“We expect our services business to grow double digits at a rate similar to the growth we reported for the first half of the fiscal year,” CFO Luca Maestri noted on the call. He added that, “iPad should grow double digits.”

Services Segment Shines, Hardware Lags

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “Today Apple is reporting revenue of $90.8 billion for the March quarter, including an all-time revenue record in Services. During the quarter, we were thrilled to launch Apple Vision Pro and to show the world the potential that spatial computing unlocks.

We’re also looking forward to an exciting product announcement next week and an incredible Worldwide Developers Conference next month. As always, we are focused on providing the very best products and services for our customers, and doing so while living up to the core values that drive us.”

The Services division, encompassing offerings like iCloud, Apple TV+, and Apple Music, soared 14% year-over-year as the company doubles down on subscriptions to offset anticipated hardware sales slowdowns.

Cook also highlighted Apple’s “delight” at launching the Vision Pro headset last quarter, underscoring its potential to “unlock spatial computing.”

He teased an “exciting product announcement” for next week, alongside June’s Worldwide Developers Conference.

His delight and statement have omitted any sales figures for the Vision Pro.

Instead Apple has clubbed it in with its entire wearables division which included things like the AirPods and Apple Watch.

European Sales Buoyed by Digital Markets Act

Intriguingly, Europe stood as the sole region where Apple defied the sales slump, buoyed by the recent Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The DMA allows EU users to sideload apps, use third-party payment platforms for in-app purchases, and set non-WebKit browsers as default on iPhones.

How many of these 3rd party sales actually translate into revenue for Apple is a matter for another day.

iPad Sales Sag Ahead of Expected Refresh

Apple Working to Restore Growth

Apple’s iPad sales also dipped from $6.67 billion to $5.56 billion year-over-year, likely impacted by the lack of a refresh since 2022.

However, the company is slated to unveil two new iPad models at a standalone event next week called Let Loose.

Speculations are rife but most point towards the arrival of the highly anticipated OLED iPad Pro and a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air.

FAQs

Why did Apple’s stock rise despite falling iPhone sales?

The surge in Apple’s stock was largely due to the announcement of a record $110 billion share buyback program, which reassured investors about the company’s financial health.

What did Apple announce about its Services division?

Apple reported a 14% increase in its Services division revenue, setting a new all-time high, as the company focuses on subscription services to balance hardware sales declines.

What new product did Apple tease for the next week?

Apple CEO Tim Cook teased an exciting new product announcement scheduled for next week, which is expected to include new iPad models.

How did Europe’s sales fare for Apple this quarter?

Europe was an exception to the global sales decline, potentially boosted by new regulations like the Digital Markets Act allowing more third-party interactions on Apple devices.

What’s expected at Apple’s upcoming product launch event?

Apple is anticipated to unveil new iPad models, including an OLED iPad Pro and a larger iPad Air, which could rejuvenate its tablet sales.

MediaTek Reportedly Planning a Premium Smartphone Launch in US Market

MediaTek Reportedly Planning a Premium Smartphone Launch in US Market

Highlights

  • MediaTek to debut in the US premium smartphone segment.
  • Potential partnership with brands like Motorola or OnePlus.
  • MediaTek’s chips could challenge Qualcomm’s US dominance.
  • Speculations hint at high-end devices like the OnePlus Open 2.

MediaTek, one of the world’s leading chip manufacturers, is likely gearing up to make its debut in the premium segment of the US market.

While the Taiwanese company’s processors have long powered an array of mid-range and even some flagship devices globally, their presence in high-end smartphones within the United States has been virtually nonexistent.

MediaTek Yet to Explore the US Market

Traditionally, top-tier devices sold in the US have exclusively relied on Qualcomm chipsets, leaving little room for competition

However, as of late MediaTek’s 9000 series chips have demonstrated performance capabilities on par, and sometimes even better, with Qualcomm’s latest offerings.

This has likely set up a stage for a potential disruption.

During an analyst conference, MediaTek confirmed plans to launch a “premium segment” Android smartphone in the US market later this year, powered by one of the company’s own chips.

While specific details about the device and its manufacturer remain undisclosed, speculation is rife among industry insiders.

Potential Candidates for the MediaTek Launch

Some analysts have suggested that Motorola’s upcoming Moto Razr refresh could be a potential candidate.

Another plausible contender could be a OnePlus foldable, considering the Oppo Find N3 Flip already employs a MediaTek Dimensity 9200 processor.

However, most speculation surrounds the possibility of the forthcoming OnePlus Open 2 featuring the Dimensity 9400 chipset, a remarkable achievement for MediaTek if true, given that the original OnePlus Open relied on Qualcomm’s offerings.

Regardless of the specific device, MediaTek’s foray into the premium US smartphone market represents a significant milestone for the company.

If successful, it could not only diversify consumer choices but also inject much-needed competition into a segment dominated by a single player for far too long.

FAQs

Why is MediaTek entering the US premium smartphone market?

MediaTek aims to expand its reach by competing in the US’s high-end smartphone market, leveraging its high-performance 9000 series chips.

What advantages does MediaTek have in competing against Qualcomm?

MediaTek’s latest chips have shown competitive or superior performance compared to Qualcomm’s, setting the stage for increased market presence.

Which devices might feature MediaTek’s premium chips in the US?

Industry speculation suggests possible candidates like the upcoming Moto Razr refresh or a new OnePlus foldable phone.

What would MediaTek’s success in the US mean for consumers?

MediaTek’s entry into this segment could offer more choices and drive innovation and price competition in the high-end smartphone market.

When is MediaTek expected to launch its premium smartphones in the US?

MediaTek announced plans for a launch later this year, though specific dates and details remain under wraps.

  • Company hints at indirect impact on Apple’s iPhone sales.
  • Skyworks to diversify beyond smartphones due to market conditions.
  • CFO predicts continued below-normal demand into the June quarter.

Apple supplier, Skyworks Solutions Inc., has issued a warning about a marked decrease in demand for smartphone components, potentially signaling weakening sales for iPhones.

Skyworks has been a longtime partner of Apple responsible for producing wireless networking components.

It’s important to note that Skyworks did not explicitly name the tech giant.

However, the company’s remarks have raised eyebrows among investors closely monitoring iPhone performance.

As part of a recent investor cal and reported on by AppleInsider, Skyworks CEO Liam K. Griffin acknowledged the challenging macroeconomic environment and revealed that the company experienced “below normal seasonal trends” in its mobile business during the March quarter.

Skyworks has now indicated its intention to diversify its business beyond the smartphone sector.

Griffin expressed the company’s commitment to “solid results and strong cash generation” despite the challenging market conditions.

Skyworks CFO Kris Sennesael provided guidance for the upcoming June quarter, warning that the company expects demand to remain “below normal season patterns.”

However, Sennesael attributed this primarily to the gradual clearing of excess inventory within the supply chain.

While Skyworks and Apple do not disclose specific component volumes or types, Apple is known for its strategic bulk purchasing practices and advance component procurement from suppliers like TSMC.

Consequently, fluctuations in demand from Apple can have ripple effects throughout the supply chain.

Although Skyworks did not directly reference Apple, the company’s remarks have fueled speculation about potential softening in iPhone sales.

Apple has faced challenges in recent months, with its stock underperforming compared to other tech giants, partly due to concerns over its slow adoption of generative AI services and intensifying competition from resurgent rivals like Huawei in the crucial Chinese market.
