Apple's Let Loose Event to Showcase New iPads in a Concise 35-Minute Presentation

Highlights

  • ‘Let Loose’ event set for a concise 35-minute run on May 7, 2024.
  • New iPad Pro and iPad Air models expected to be unveiled.
  • Updates to include new Magic Keyboard and enhanced Apple Pencil with haptic feedback.
  • iPad Pro rumoured to feature an M4 chip, enhancing AI and performance capabilities.

Apple’s upcoming ‘Let Loose’ event focused on iPads will happen on May 7, 2024.

Unlike Apple’s traditional live launch events, it’s a pre-recorded video presentation—like the ‘Spooky Fast’ MacBook event last year.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the ‘Let Loose’ video runtime will be about 35 minutes long.

That’s a short event.

But it’s not the shortest.

While many might assume 35 minutes is relatively snappy, it’s not the shortest Apple event ever as the title for that goes to Apple’s October 2023 MacBook event, which clocked in at 32 minutes.

Let Loose: What to Expect

Apple’s Let Loose Event to Showcase New iPads in a Concise 35-Minute Presentation

So, what might be witnessed in these 35 minutes?

Indeed, there will be the release of the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models during the event.

And that’s not all, we can expect new generations of the Magic Keyboard andApple Pencil accessories.

The rumours go so far as to say that the Apple Pencil will get a new squeeze gesture with haptic feedback.

A prototype of the iPad Pro is expected to flaunt the upgrade on Apple’s M4 chip, which would indeed showcase how powerful the company is in on-device AI capabilities, in addition to performance uplifts.

Apart from the Pro models, an updated iPad Air powered by the M2 chip is likely to be seen.

There are also rumours of a larger 12.9-inch display option for the iPad Air.

A redesigned Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro with an aluminium build, bigger trackpad, and other design changes are also expected.

Gurman’s ‘Power On’ newsletter has been a key source of information about the event, stating that the online ‘Let Loose’ stream will go live at 7:30 PM IST on May 7.

iPhone 17 Series Promises Major Upgrades with New Design and Advanced AI

iPhone 17 Series Promises Major Upgrades with New Design and Advanced AI

Highlights

  • iPhone 17 series to introduce a fresh industrial design and enhanced AI processing.
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max to feature titanium build and smaller Dynamic Island.
  • New ‘iPhone 17 Slim’ to replace the current iPhone Plus model.
  • Pro models may include a 48MP Periscope lens, significantly upgrading camera capabilities.

According to analyst Jeff Pu from Haitong Intl Tech Research, the iPhone 17 lineup is likely to be a mega-upgrade cycle for Apple, thanks to a few big changes:

  • New Design: The iPhone 17 series is likely to have a new industrial design.
  • AI Processing: The iPhones are likely to have enhanced AI processing capabilities.
  • iPhone 17 Slim: Apple is likely to replace the current iPhone Plus model with a new slimmer “iPhone 17 Slim” model.

Pu predicts the display sizes will be as follows: the iPhone 17 will have a 6.1-inch display, the iPhone 17 Slim will have a 6.6-inch display, the iPhone 17 Pro will have a 6.3-inch display, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a 6.9-inch display.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumoured to use a titanium chassis and feature a smaller “narrowed Dynamic Island” cutout enabled by a new “metalens” proximity sensor technology.

The other models will retain the current design.

The Pro Max will also showcase a reduced-size Dynamic Island, made possible by metalens technology that minimizes the proximity sensor’s space requirements.

This same technology may also be employed to compact the Face ID sensor in the top-tier 2025 iPhone model.

Pro models may include a 48MP Periscope lens, significantly upgrading camera capabilities
Pro models may include a 48MP Periscope lens, significantly upgrading camera capabilities

Moreover, both the Pro models will potentially feature a Periscope 48MP 1G+3P lens, a substantial enhancement over the anticipated Periscope 12MP 1G+3P lens in the iPhone 16.

This is in contrast to the iPhone 15 series, where the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have 6GB of RAM, and the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have 8GB.

Analysts have a habit of getting some of their facts wrong.

Most recently it happened to Ming-Chi Kuo and then also to analyst Mark Gurman.

The iPhone 17 is more than 18 months away so expectations need to be kept in check and any information needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

It will have 16GB RAM and run Android 14 with Vivo’s FunTouchOS skin on top.

This is inline with the specs revealed across the phone’s China launch.

However, Vivo hasn’t officially announced a global release for the X Fold 3 series yet.

OpenAI Might Launch ChatGPT Search Engine to Challenge Google's Dominance

Highlights

  • Potential new ChatGPT search engine could launch on search.chatgpt.com on May 9th.
  • OpenAI’s search engine to feature natural language queries with AI-driven responses.
  • Could incorporate both traditional search results and a chat interface.
  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hints at integrating large language models with web search capabilities.

There are reports leaking that OpenAI will soon roll out its own search engine based on ChatGPT to take on Google.

Some say a website called search.chatgpt.com coming online on May 9th will be that new search engine.

But it remains to be seen.

The website name could have been quickly registered by an OpenAI developer for testing purposes.

People often watch websites with popular domains like ChatGPT.com and assume something’s in the works if they see activity.

If OpenAI does launch a ChatGPT search engine, it will most likely involve sending in natural language queries and receiving replies from an AI system, just like Perplexity or Google’s upcoming Gemini.

Google May Finally Get a Real Search Engine Competitor

OpenAI Might Launch ChatGPT Search Engine to Challenge Google's Dominance
OpenAI Might Launch ChatGPT Search Engine to Challenge Google’s Dominance

Google has dominated web search for more than 20 years and has 90% market share.

But the cautious approach Google is taking to generative AI has some speculating that competitors, such as OpenAI, could somehow make their mark.

A ChatGPT search engine may produce regular search results but also incorporate a chat interface where you can get answers summarized by an AI model.

The big questions are: Would you switch to using a ChatGPT-based search as your primary engine?

Or would you only use it occasionally?

And how much do you trust AI-generated summaries for your searches?

Currently, paid ChatGPT users can access external search engines from within ChatGPT itself.

But this feature is inconsistent and gets disabled at times.

In a recent a podcast, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman suggested ChatGPT could represent the future of search by integrating large language models and web search capabilities.

Only time will tell what kind of search product, if any, OpenAI actually releases.

We’ll have to wait and see what they have planned.

FAQs

What is the potential new product from OpenAI?

OpenAI is rumoured to be launching its own search engine based on ChatGPT, aiming to offer a unique alternative to traditional search engines by utilizing AI for natural language queries.

How might the ChatGPT search engine differ from Google?

Unlike Google, the ChatGPT search engine is expected to include a chat interface where users can interact directly with an AI model to get summarized answers and information.

What domain might host the new OpenAI search engine?

Speculation suggests that the domain search.chatgpt.com, registered for testing, could potentially be the platform for the new OpenAI search engine.

Why could OpenAI’s move into search be significant?

With Google holding a dominant position in web search, OpenAI’s entry into this space with a ChatGPT-based engine could introduce a significant shift in how users interact with search technology.

What did OpenAI’s CEO say about the future of search?

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, mentioned on a podcast that integrating large language models with web search capabilities could be the future direction for search engines, indicating a move towards more AI-integrated search solutions.

OnePlus just launched the OnePlus Nord CE 4 in India last month.

The OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite has now been spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website, according to a tipster named Sanju Choudhary.

Being spotted on the BIS website is a sure-shot assurance of an Indian launch coming soon.

Nord CE 4 Lite: Potential Specs

While the listing doesn’t show any details, the tipster says the Nord CE 4 Lite will be a rebranded version of the Oppo A3 phone that’s only available in China.

OnePlus has rebranded Oppo phones to sell in India before, so this wouldn’t be surprising.

The Nord CE 4 Lite is expected to have a major upgrade to the display compared to the previous model.

According to Mr. Choudhary, the rumored Nord CE 4 Lite specs are listed below.

Notice that these expected features paint the Nord CE 4 Lite as a proper budget offering.

New Phishing Scams Targeting Netflix Users Highlight Need for Vigilance

0
Netflix's latest Top 10 Movies

Highlights

  • Phishing emails offer a suspicious 90-day Netflix subscription extension.
  • Users are warned against entering credit card details in response to such emails.
  • False sender email addresses indicate phishing attempts.
  • Netflix accounts typically do not have expiration threats used in phishing language.

Some new phishing email scams are popping up for Netflix users to be aware of in order to secure private information from its users.

As9to5Mac reports, the email looks legit on the surface, with a Netflix logo and application icons on it.

However, users must keep their eyes open and look for signs to spot a phishing effort.

Red Flags To Watch Out For

New Phishing Scams Targeting Netflix Users Highlight Need for Vigilance
New Phishing Scams Targeting Netflix Users Highlight Need for Vigilance

The biggest giveaway is the free 90-day extension offer of your Netflix subscription.

While some streaming services are free to use and might offer promo deals for sign-ups, the three-month free extension offer smells fishy.

Watch out for the request to enter your credit card information but with a promise of a “free” extension.

Legitimate companies typically do not ask for sensitive financial information in unsolicited emails.

Additionally, the email may appear to come from Netflix, but a quick inspection of the sender’s email address shows it’s not actually from Netflix — which is a big red flag that an email is probably a phishing scam.

Users are warned against entering credit card details in response to such emails
Users are warned against entering credit card details in response to such emails

More often than not, Netflix accounts are not associated with actual expirations, so the language of this scam is misleading to make users feel that they need to act fast or need to worry about their account.

While the email may be well-written with no major typos or weird wording, caution must be practiced when one requests private or financial information.

By keeping their eyes peeled and informing friends and family of the newest tactics used in phishing attempts, you can help protect them from such nefarious attempts to steal sensitive data.

FAQs

What should Netflix users watch out for in potential phishing emails?

Netflix users should be cautious of emails offering unrealistic subscription extensions, such as a free 90-day period, and requests to enter sensitive financial information.

How can you verify the authenticity of an email claiming to be from Netflix?

Check the sender’s email address carefully; any deviation from the official Netflix domain is a clear sign of a phishing attempt.

Why do phishing emails ask for credit card information even if they offer free services?

Scammers use offers like free services to lure users into providing their credit card details, which can then be used fraudulently.

What common mistakes do phishing emails include that can be red flags?

While some phishing attempts are well-crafted, many include suspicious offers, such as free extensions that are not typically provided by Netflix, or they may use urgent language to provoke quick action.

Under-Screen Face ID Delayed for iPhone, Now Expected in 2026 iPhone 18 Pro Models

0
Under-Screen Face ID Delayed for iPhone, Now Expected in 2026 iPhone 18 Pro Models

Highlights

  • Under-screen Face ID postponed to iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in 2026.
  • Non-Pro iPhone models might get the feature with the iPhone 19 series in 2027.
  • iPhone 17 series to shift all models to LTPO displays for always-on functionality.
  • Future iPhones to potentially include under-panel camera technology post-2026.

The long-awaited under-screen Face ID feature for iPhones has been pushed back once again, according to the latest rumours.

Display analyst Ross Young initially predicted that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, expected in 2025, would be the first to ditch the notch and implement under-screen Face ID.

However, he has now revised his forecast, suggesting that this technology will not arrive until the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

iPhone 18 Could be the First With In-Display Camera

If Young’s updated prediction holds true, the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro models will be the first to feature under-screen Face ID, replacing the existing notch design.

Non-Pro iPhone models may have to wait until the iPhone 19 series in late 2027 to gain this under-screen biometric authentication capability.

Young also shared insights into other display changes expected for the iPhone 17 range in 2025. He anticipates a shift from low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) to low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) across all iPhone 17 models.

Under-Screen Face ID Delayed for iPhone, Now Expected in 2026 iPhone 18 Pro Models

Since the iPhone 14 Pro, LTPO displays have enabled the Pro models to offer an always-on display feature while preserving battery life. With this transition, the always-on functionality could become standard across the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

After implementing under-screen Face ID, Apple is expected to adopt under-panel camera technology developed by LG Innotek after 2026.

Integrating a front-facing camera beneath the display is considered a more significant engineering challenge compared to under-screen Face ID, which explains why the latter is expected to be implemented first.

As anticipation builds for the iPhone 16 family later this year, Apple is expected to rely heavily on iOS 18 and its new features to attract buyers, as the overall design is rumored to remain largely unchanged from the current generation.
