Infinix’s upcoming Zero series to be equipped with ‘MemFusion’ feature

0
Infinix-Zero-Series

The most awaited and talked about 5G Smartphone from Infinix is said to be equipped with the latest ‘MemFusion’ feature which will enable the users to extend the RAM of their smartphone by using some part of ROM for better and smooth performance.

The importance of RAM

RAM (random access memory) is a major attribute of the customer-purchasing journey and the everyday user aspires for a mobile phone with plenty of RAM. A mobile phone has two memories, RAM and ROM, which correspond to a computer’s memory and hard disk, respectively. The memory is responsible for running programs and exchanging data, while the hard disk means the storage space where you can store photos, videos and other files. All programs in the phone run on RAM; therefore, read and write speed and capacity of RAM are crucial for the performance of the phone.

Countless smartphone users have encountered a scenario where the game is forced back and has to be reloaded only because users switch to social apps to replay messages while playing the game. This is the so-called ‘kill APP’ caused by insufficient memory. With a larger running memory, users can run more apps simultaneously and quickly switch between apps without lag. This is a big deal for heavy users, especially gamers, as more RAM makes the game run smoother, making the experience more fun. The RAM, however, increases the price significantly, leading to a dilemma for customers wanting a phone with more ram but not having the budget to purchase it.

Infinix extends RAM out of the devices’ ROM for a smooth experience

The upcoming Zero Series devices will be equipped the ‘MemFusion’ feature, which would be accessed by Setting -> Special Function -> MemFusion. This feature will enable the consumers to set the storage space out of ROM to convert into RAM.

They can choose from the available option – 2GB / 3GB / 5GB RAM. Once the RAM size is selected, the device will restart and show the allocated Virtual RAM as chosen. The feature is a game-changer when you’re using more apps at a specific time and need a temporary boost in performance without compromising your daily battery life too much. Extended RAM technology means that a part of the ROM will be used to work as RAM when the RAM is not sufficient to ensure smooth performance.

With the latest MemFusion technology, the number of apps that the Infinix Zero Series will run will increase from 9 to 20 simultaneously. With the same 20 apps running, the average start-up speed of applications can be increased by 60% approx. The devices can load games faster and ensure that users get into games quickly even if they switch among multiple apps.

Physical memory in Android phones has climbed from 1GB to 8GB in the past decade, and there are several flagship phones with 10GB or more. In contrast, Infinix adopts its extended RAM technology and MemFusion feature based on increased physical memory, bringing users a more stable and smooth multi-application running experience through technology upgrades for the same attainable price.

Next-generation technology isn’t beyond reach. Infinix is working hard to ensure several future devices have innovative technology that solves the daily issues consumers face at a convenient and attainable price point.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, has recently introduced its new premium mobile processor, the Exynos 2200. The Exynos 2200 is a freshly designed mobile processor with a powerful AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based Samsung Xclipse graphics processing unit (GPU). With the most cutting-edge Arm®-based CPU cores available in the market and an upgraded neural processing unit (NPU), the Exynos 2200 will enable the ultimate mobile phone gaming experience, as well as enhance the overall experience in social media apps and photography.

“Built on the most advanced 4-nanometer (nm) EUV (extreme ultraviolet lithography) process, and combined with cutting-edge mobile, GPU and NPU technology, Samsung has crafted the Exynos 2200 to provide the finest experience for smartphone users. With the Xclipse, our new mobile GPU built with RDNA 2 graphics technology from the industry leader AMD, the Exynos 2200 will redefine mobile gaming experience, aided by enhanced graphics and AI performance,” said Yongin Park, President of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics.

What is Xclipse?

The Xclipse GPU is a one-of-a-kind hybrid graphic processor that is positioned between the console and the mobile graphic processor. Xclipse is the combination of ‘X’ that represents Exynos, and the word ‘eclipse’. Like an eclipse, the Xclipse GPU will bring an end to the old era of mobile gaming and mark the start of an exciting new chapter.

With the high-performance AMD RDNA 2 architecture as its backbone, the Xclipse inherits advanced graphic features such as hardware accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS) that were previously only available on PCs, laptops and consoles.

Ray tracing is a revolutionary technology that closely simulates how light physically behaves in the real world. By calculating the movement and the color characteristic of light rays as they bounce off the surface, ray tracing produces realistic lighting effects for graphically rendered scenes. To offer the most immersive graphics and user experiences even on mobile, Samsung has collaborated with AMD to realize the industry’s first ever hardware-accelerated ray tracing on mobile GPU.

Variable Rate Shading

It is a technique that optimizes GPU workload by allowing developers to apply lower shading rate in areas where overall quality will not be affected. This gives GPU more room to work on areas that matter most to the gamers and improve frame-rate for smoother gameplay.

In addition, the Xclipse GPU comes with various technologies such as advanced multi-IP governor (AMIGO) that enhance overall performance and efficiency.

“AMD RDNA 2 graphics architecture extends power-efficient, advanced graphics solutions to PCs, laptops, consoles, automobiles and now to mobile phones. Samsung’s Xclipse GPU is the first result of multiple planned generations of AMD RDNA graphics in Exynos SoCs,” said David Wang, Senior Vice President of Radeon Technologies Group at AMD.

Enhanced visual experience and quality images

The Exynos 2200’s image signal processor (ISP) architecture has been redesigned to support the latest image sensors for ultra-high resolution of up to 200 megapixel (MP). At 30 frames-per-second (fps), the ISP supports up to 108 MP in single camera mode, and 64+36 MP in dual camera mode. It can also connect up to seven individual image sensors and drive four concurrently for advanced multi-camera setups. For video recording, the ISP supports up to 4K HDR (or 8K) resolution.

Together with the NPU, the ISP utilizes an advanced content-aware AI camera for more refined and realistic results. When taking a photograph, the machine learning based AI camera recognizes multiple objects, the environment and faces within the scene. It then applies optimal settings for color, white balance, exposure, dynamic range and more to produce professional-level quality images.

With 8K resolution support, the Exynos 2200’s advanced multi-format codec (MFC) makes videos truly come to life. It decodes videos up to 4K at 240fps or 8K at 60fps and encodes up to 4K at 120fps or 8K at 30fps. In addition, the MFC integrates power efficient AV1 decoder enabling longer playback time. The advanced display solution features HDR10+ adding more dynamic range and depth to the picture and offers refresh rates of up to 144Hz for a more responsive and smoother transitioning experience when scrolling or playing games.

MediaTek

MediaTek today announced the world’s first live demo of Wi-Fi 7 technology, highlighting the capabilities of its forthcoming Wi-Fi 7 Filogic connectivity portfolio. MediaTek is currently showcasing two Wi-Fi 7 demos to key customers and industry collaborators to demonstrate the technology’s super-fast speeds and low latency transmission.

“The rollout of Wi-Fi 7 will mark the first time that Wi-Fi can be a true wireline/Ethernet replacement for super high-bandwidth applications,” said Alan Hsu, corporate vice president and general manager of the Intelligent Connectivity business at MediaTek. “MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 7 technology will be the backbone of home, office and industrial networks and provide seamless connectivity for everything from multi-player AR/VR applications to cloud gaming and 4K calls to 8K streaming and beyond.”

MediaTek’s demo shows how its Wi-Fi 7 Filogic technology can achieve the maximum speed defined by IEEE 802.11be and demonstrates its multi-link operation (MLO) technology. MLO technology aggregates multiple channels on different frequencies bands at the same time to highlight how network traffic can still flow seamlessly even if there is interference or congestion on the bands. MLO technology will be critical for delivering faster and more reliable video streaming, gaming and anything else that requires constant, sustained and real-time throughput.

“Faster broadband Internet access and more demanding applications such as higher resolution video streaming and VR gaming are driving demand for Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and soon Wi-Fi 7,” said Mario Morales, group vice president, Semiconductors at IDC. “Wi-Fi 7’s advances in channel width, QAM, and new features such as multi-link operation (MLO) will make Wi-Fi 7 very attractive for devices including flagship smartphones, PCs, consumer devices and vertical industries like retail and industrial; as service providers begin to deploy a wider spectrum of hotspots across these market segments.”

MediaTek has been involved in the development of the Wi-Fi 7 standard since its inception, and the company is one of the first adopters of Wi-Fi 7 technology.

“Today’s consumers want an always-connected, reliable and fast Wi-Fi connection for many applications such as video calls, 4K/8K TV entertainment, real-time gaming, and others,” said Moon Ho Lee, president at Korea Mercury. “MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 7 technology can fulfill the current need for all the applications consumers enjoy today and also open the door for future AR/VR applications which we can’t even imagine today.”

Wi-Fi 7 is unique in that it offers completely new capabilities in all the available spectrums for Wi-Fi uses, including 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz. Wi-Fi 7 will deliver 2.4X faster speeds than Wi-Fi 6 – even with the same number of antennas – since Wi-Fi 7 can utilize 320Mhz channels and support 4K quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) technology. Other notable features of Wi-Fi 7 include MLO to reduce latency by transmitting Wi-Fi on multiple bands, in addition to multi-user resource unit (MRU) features for enhanced interference avoidances and mitigation.

Products with Wi-Fi 7 are expected to hit the market starting in 2023.

Tech Insight: 5 key touchpoints for online buying of smartphones

Tech-Insight-5-key-touchpoints-for-online-buying-of-smartphones

Techarc today announced Smartphone online buying basis analyses of 5,000 online smartphone buyers across different price segments and locations. In this Tech Insight, Techarc identified 5 key touch points or milestones that a potential buyer goes through before hitting a ‘buy’ button on the popular marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart.

The 5 key milestones or touchpoints of a potential online smartphone buyer in that order are:

  1. Listing: The stage where a buyer looks for the device(s) in the catalogue populated after search results.
  2. Information Page: The unique page of the SKU where all details of the device are given including features, specifications, images, etc.
  3. Pricing: The section where pricing, discount and offers like cashback, etc., details are given on the information page.
  4. Shipping: Details about availability and delivery of the SKU to the location of the buyer.
  5. Ratings and Reviews: This is very critical section and last touchpoint for any buyer to leverage from the experience of existing users to form an opinion.

5 key milestones of a potential online smartphone buyers

Listing

The potential buyers do search for their ‘dream device’ by typing in keywords – generic as well as brand – to narrow their zone of consideration and find the device they are interested in. If the device doesn’t figure on ‘prime pages’ (Over 80% of the visitors don’t go beyond first 3 pages of search results), then there is potential chance of them pausing the purchase intent which can deflect them to other channels – offline or online. However, specifically in case of smartphones since buyers mostly visit with unambiguous intent, they search for their wish list device(s) by other means including using the menu options and other filters available on the marketplaces. As a result, only 2% of the potential buyers drop out at this stage.

Information

The unique page of the smartphone model that the buyer is interested in has all the information including specifications and other details that a user looks for before buying. However, users do not find the information always easily available, especially the first-time buyers or visitors who visit marketplaces after a considerable gap, say around 6-9 months. As a result, even if the information is available somewhere on the page, they do not find it and either go for other off-platform sources to inquire more or raise a question to the seller again impacting the momentum of purchase. In the study we found 6% of the buyers dropping at this stage.

Pricing

At the stage, other than discounts and promotions, users are highly interested in learning cashbacks, rewards, payment options, etc. The online marketplaces not only prominently make such information available but have also made almost all the possible modes of payment and finance at the disposal of a potential buyer. This has considerably lowered the drop rate which is just 3% at this milestone.

Also Read | Smartphone makers preferred multiple chipset portfolio in 2021: Techarc

Shipping

The fourth area of interest that a buyer looks information around is shipping details which include availability of the device at their location (pin code) and the expected time of delivery in days. Again, the marketplaces have done significant improvements here over the years. However, at times due to non-availability of specific SKUs differentiated by colour and RAM-ROM configurations, 13% of potential buyers drop at this stage.

Rating and Review: The last but most important milestone before a buyer hits add-to-cart / buy button is looking at the ratings and reviews the device has got. Even if all the previous stages do not impact much in terms of dropouts, this stage results in more than 1.5 times dropouts than all the previous milestones put together. If the overall sentiment built through ratings and reviews is negative, 34% of the potential buyers drop at this stage and abort their purchase intent.

Way forward

The digicommerce buying is a self-servicing process where repeated as well as first time buyers come in to buy their products including smartphones. OEMs selling online need to make it sure that the information available to the potential buyers addresses the needs of first-time explorers as well as experienced repeaters. Hence, while it’s a great marketing point to leverage to highlight hero features and specifications, sometime basic functions also merit prominent positioning.

The brands need to optimise their search results and ensure they do figure up on both generic and brand specific keywords. The specific SKUs should figure up within first three pages, or the prime pages of digicommerce. Here the platforms may also need to rekindle their cataloguing so that variants such as colours and RAM/ROM configurations are distinctly shown in the results rather than a buyer having to look for the options after opening the model level page.

OEMs will have to closely monitor availability and out-of-stock status for the models by variants for the pin codes served. Keeping a track will ensure that stocks never run dry resulting in drop of a potential buyer.

The power of ratings and reviews is at times underestimated. The OEMs will have to develop easy ways, for instance voice driven, to let genuine buyers share their opinion about the products. Also, in some cases it’s not easy for an average user to have a view about the experience just at the time of purchase. OEMs should also engage the buyers after 3 to 6 months to solicit their ratings and reviews which can give a more learned and realistic view about the experience and issues, if any, faced by the actual users.
