The tech giant updated its conditions on its Apple app store review guidelines this Monday with a new set of terms and conditions surrounding NFTs.

However, the condition referring to paid unlocking of digital goods and services rolled out is that the NFTs purchased with Apple’s app are still valid for token-gated utility provided they pay 30% as Apple Tax.

This move may deter the application developers from providing their support for such arrangements (in-app purchase of NFTs). However, NFTs can still be used to unlock token-gated content.

The Way Ahead

Apple’s updated guidelines are not pursuing any ban on in-app payment services with a 30% Apple Tax on any such purchases. However, in-app use of NFTs widely used in different Web3 applications using blockchain technology for peer-to-peer token-based economies is not affected. The app makers often use NFTs to control the “gate” functionality on the basis of the ownership of the tokens.

For instance, owning or holding a particular NFT or cryptocurrency provided you with special discounts within the store or gives you access to any exclusive merchandise facilitated to certain token holders. Such transactions took place in the “tokengated commerce” launched by Shopify.

It allowed the store owners to give early access to the NFT holders to exclusive limited-edition merchandise and other lucrative experiences. Now, with the updated guidelines, no such function or facility shall be available for the developers within Shopify in the Apple app store as well.

Meta ordered to sell Giphy by UK’s competition watchdog CMA

Competition and Market Authority (CMA), the UK competition watchdog has ordered Meta, owned by Facebook to sell the gif creation company Giphy in order to safeguard the business interest of other companies concerned operating in the UK. CMA had earlier intimated to Meta that disposing of Giphy’s advertising services is the only solution to the arising ambiguity in the advertising sector.

However, Meta didn’t comply with the suggestion and appealed against the previous decision to, in their purview, protect social media users from its increasing influence in social media. The tribunal’s ruling was followed by an expedient review regarding Giphy and Meta with new submissions on the two and finally, it stood by its previous decision of selling Giphy.

Meta-Giphy problem- the whole story

Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is under the impression that Giphy’s takeover would allow other social media platforms access to GIFs. it would impact their attractiveness and competitiveness. It also mentioned the notion that this deal would impact UK businesses as they could not benefit from innovation in this market.

It declared that the deal poses harm to social media users and UK advertisers. Even the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) where Meta subsequently appealed that decision was of the same opinion.

The independent panel appointed to probe into the Meta and Giphy merger mentioned its findings. It concluded that this deal would put Meta on the brighter side as it already possesses significant market power and the addition of Giphy’s advertising services on its side would:

deny or limit the access of other social media platforms to Gifs. It would increase the user time spent on social media in favor of Meta.
It could try to get access to more data from other Giphy customers such as Tik Tok, Twitter, and Snapchat in lieu of giving access to Giphy’s advertising services.

CMA revealed through their findings that GIFs play an important role in user engagement on social media platforms and that there are billions of searches of the required GIFs every month. Competition and Market Authority (CMA) believes that this deal would have a severe impact on the display advertising market.

Prior to this merger, Giphy was busy providing innovative services in the UK and its expansion abroad. Post-merger there is a threat of lack of potential advertisement toll impacting several businesses operating through visual images and GIFs in the UK.

CMA also revealed that Giphy has the potential to compete with Meta and even an upper hand when it comes to greater innovation from Meta and other competitors. Post-acquisition Meta terminated Giphy’s advertising services that worked as a potential tool for other businesses in the UK. The Competition and Market Authority (CMA) suggested that to avoid such discrepancy and inconvenience Giphy should be sold off in its entirety to an approved buyer.

Final purview

Stuart McIntosh, Chair of the inquiry group stated that the Meta- Giphy deal would impact competition in 2 markets- remove a potential competitor in the UK display ad market while empowering Meta in enhancing its substantial market power in social media.

He stated further that the proper sale of Giphy’s advertising services would promote innovation in the digital advertisement sector and ensure its benefits are received by other UK social media users as well.

WhatsApp Down? Users Unable to Send or Receive Messages Across the Globe, Including India

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned social messaging app, faced an hours-long outage yesterday in many regions across the globe including India. The users complained of not being able to connect to the server or failing to send or receive WhatsApp messages. Phone and video call services were also affected during the downtime.

The major outage affected millions of users for around two hours. According to the official WhatsApp spokesperson, “the brief outage was a result of a technical error on our part”. The issue has been resolved and services were restored at the time of writing this update.

Many users flocked to Twitter during the WhatsApp outage as terms such as #whatsappdown kept trending the whole day. Following the tradition of finding humour in every situation, many Twitter users shared memes about the situation and its possible impact on users.

Downdetector, an online platform for tracking and analysing websites, reported that more than 27,000 users complained of the outage around the world. Out of these users, 69% of reported facing issues with sending messages on the app, 24% of users were facing troubles connecting to the server and more than 7% complained of issues with the app overall.

As per the statistics released on Downdetector, the first reports of issues with connecting to the app came at around 12:30 pm in India on Tuesday. Initially, the app downtime tracking service detected about 2,610 reports. The same number, when Downdetector made the reports public, had increased to 25,597. This clearly indicates how widespread the issues were and how many users of the popular messaging service across the world were impacted.

For users in India, the heat map on Downdetector revealed that several Indian cities were particularly impacted by the outage. This included some major Tier 1 cities such as New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata as well as many Tier 2 or Tier 3 cities also like Indore, Surat, and Cuttack.

Moreover, WhatsApp for business also reported having issues with various features including messaging and calls. According to Downdetector, many WhatsApp for business users also flagged issues at the time of the global outage.

Meta spokesperson, while addressing the media, admitted having issues with the servers and said, “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.”

The anti-trust watchdog has recently slapped a “monetary penalty of Rs 1337.76 crore on Google for abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android Mobile device ecosystem.” CCI, last Friday, released the details of the investigation carried out by them including Amazon’s allegation in a 293-page penalty order.

While CCI tried speaking to many dominant industry players, however, Amazon’s unit was probably the only representative of any company that spoke freely to the investigators.

What Amazon revealed to CCI during their investigative discussions

“Amazon has explored working with mobile OEMs/ODMs/CMs who also manufacture non-mobile smart media devices, such as smart TVs, to enable those manufacturers to distribute non-mobile smart media devices (including smart TVs) running the Fire OS (e.g., Fire TV Edition (FTVE) for smart TVs).

In these discussions with OEMs, at least seven OEMs have indicated that their ability to enter into a manufacturing relationship of this kind with Amazon is either blocked entirely or significantly limited (e.g., in terms of geographic scope) by their contractual commitments to Google and the concern that Google would retaliate against another of the OEM’s businesses that produce Android devices.”

According to the CCI report, Amazon has said that manufacturers openly expressed their desire to work with the e-commerce company but they couldn’t because of Google’s fear. Amazon unit further revealed, “In others, the OEM has tried and failed to obtain “permission” from Google. For example, such discussions occurred with Skyworth, TPV (with respect to the Philips brand), UMC (with respect to the Sharp brand), Foxconn (with respect to the Sharp brand), and Panasonic. Panasonic also shared concerns about possible retaliation by Google against its automotive and aviation businesses if it proceeded with FTVE installation on smart TVs.”

Aside from many other allegations made during the investigation, Amazon also revealed how the creation and growth of their own mobile browser “Slik” were negatively impacted by Google’s direct or indirect intimidation of many vendors against working with others including Amazon.

The CCI report briefly mentions this allegation made by Amazon while imposing the monetary penalty on Google. The report says, “This impacted Amazon Silk adoption because Amazon’s research at the time showed that the default browser was used by 58% of users, leaving Amazon Silk to compete with other web browsers such as Opera, Firefox, and UC for the minority of users not using the default browser.”

Regional cinema is winning hearts all the way and rightly so! This time it is a Kannada film Kantara that has been creating havoc amongst both critics and audiences. Written, Directed and Starred by Rishab Shetty, Kantara is now expected to become the highest grossing films of Kannada film industry. The negotiations between Kantara’s makers and one of country’s leading streaming platforms are on and the film is eyeing an OTT release very soon.

As per the buzz in the media, Kantara can get an OTT release as soon as November 4, 2022 via the leading streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video. The streaming platform is also expected to release another successful venture, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Ponniyin Selvan on the same day.

Although an official announcement is yet to be made, the slightest news related to the OTT release of the film is getting all the attention. It is understandable why the makers would want to keep the release date under the wrap at the moment. The film is having a great theatrical run country wide and any news about the film releasing on OTT can harm any potential business.

Kantara in recent days have received great word of mouth from every film goer across the country for its story and exceptional presentation. Online the film has garnered many praises from netizens, which has been significant in increasing the film’s reach.

Popularity of the film has been such that while the makers initially released the film only in Kannada with English subtitles, they soon had to dub the film in other languages. The Kannada version with English subtitles hit the theatres on September 30th 2022. Thanks to the overwhelming response from the audience and a wide demand raised through many platforms, the other language dubbed versions were also released in theatres on October 14th 2022.

Kantara has already been dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam. The Malayalam version is schedule to hit the cinemas this week. This move of quickly dubbing the film in other languages has also shown a terrific upward trend on the box office with numbers rising dramatically. The film has already crossed Rs 100 crore globally and is expected to soon become the highest grossing films to come out of Kannada film industry.

As per the rumours, the film had already sold it digital and satellite rights before the release on big screen.

The applause for Kantara hasn’t been limited to critics or audience, a lot of well known faces from entertainment industry has also publicly appreciated the film.

Popular Tamil star Dhanush recently tweeted after watching the films and all the words of praise fell short. He tweeted, “Kantara .. Mind blowing !! A must watch .. Rishab Shetty , you should be very proud of yourself. Congratulations hombale films.. keep pushing the boundaries. A big hug to all the actors and technicians of the film. God bless.”

Actor Rana Daggubati also showered praises on the film as the actor tweeted, “Kannada’s @shetty_rishab and @hombalefilms are on *fire emoji* what an extraordinary film #Kantara is!! Congratulations to each and everyone who was part of the film! @shetty_rishab truly inspired!!”

Recently Bollywood Actress Kangana Ranaut also did not shy away from displaying her genuine reaction after watching the film. The actress, who has been banned from Twitter last year for posting hateful content, rather took to Instagram for sharing her views. Ranaut said in an Intagram story, “I feel #Kantara should be India’s entry to Oscar next year, I know year is yet to end and there may be better films coming, but more than Oscar India needs the right representation globally… this land of mysteries and Mystics one can’t understand one can only embrace it …. India is like a miracle… if you try and make sense of it you will only get frustrated but if you surrender to the miracle you can also be one …. Kantara is an experiential reality which world must experience .. @rishabshetty77.”

Kantara is a action-thriller with a storyline full of drama and action. This is village story where the director Rishab Shetty himself is playing the lead role of Shiva.

It is about a fictional village Kantara of Dakshina Kannnada well protected by the Demigods. All these Demigods are believed to be the Guardians and protectors of the Kantara. The village is full of traditional culture of Kambla and Bhootha Kola.

What begins as an ego battle in the start of the film soon winds up as a battle between the villagers and the evil officers. Shiva (Rishab Shetty) leads the village as the protagonist and also leads the battle on the behalf of the villagers. The story soon centres on how to protect the village at all cost.

All the dialogues, the story and the screenplay of the film is also penned by directory & actor Rishab Shetty himself. To call is a one man show won’t be all wrong. The film also has actress Sapthami Gowda in the female lead role. Other actors such as Kishore, Achuth Kumar, Pramod Shetty, and Vinay Biddappa can be in pivotal supporting roles in the film.

The film is produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the banner Hombale Films. B Ajaneesh Loknath is the music composer while Arvind S Kashyap handled the exceptional cinematography. Pratheek Shetty and K M Prakash have been credited for editing the film.
