Android 14 features announced at Google I/O 2023: How to Download & list of eligible phones to get Android 14 beta builds

Android 14 features

HIGHLIGHTS

* Google is yet to announce Android 14 officially.
* Some major features of Android 14 were announced at the Google I/O 2023.
* Some non-Google devices are eligible for Android 14 beta builds.

Android 14 was anticipated to be unveiled at the Google I/O 2023, but this did not occur and is said to come later this year. However, the company announced some intriguing Android 14 features.

The initial Android 14 developer preview was launched in February. The tech giant made the first public beta version of Android 14 available in April, and it is currently downloadable for compatible phones.

Let us take a look at the features of Android 14 and the list of eligible devices for Android 14 beta builds.

Android 14 features

At I/O 2023, Google officially unveiled the latest version of its mobile operating system — the Android 14. While the first beta of the same was limited to Pixel smartphones, the 2nd beta has been made available for partner phones, tablets, and foldables.

Android 14’s new core features include iOS 16-like customisable lock screen, improved camera experience, lossless audio over USB, and a lot more. Google has also highlighted that the Android 14 can now take better advantage of the GPU to deliver an enhanced graphics experience.

Android 14 Features

Android 14 features

* Magic Compose: It is a new tool in Messages by Google that uses AI to help users add more personality to their conversations. It will suggest replies based on the context of their messages and even magically change the style of what they write.

* Find My Device: As part of Android 14, Google said it will update Find My Device later this summer to work with a bigger range of devices from different brands, like headphones, tablets, and more. This will help users keep track of all their devices. And to keep users safe and protect their privacy, unknown tracker alerts will let them know if an unrecognized tracking tag is following them and help them find it.

* Lock screen customisation: With Android 14, users will be able to customise their lock screen with new shortcuts and clocks that are beautifully designed. This will enable users to bring their own inspiration to their devices. Additionally, users have the option to experiment with a fresh monochromatic colour scheme that can be implemented throughout their entire phone interface.

* Emoji: With the emoji wallpaper feature, you can select up to fourteen different emoji, browse through a range of patterns, and choose a colour scheme to create a personalised wallpaper for both your home and lock screen. The wallpapers featuring emojis are designed to be interactive, meaning that the emojis on the wallpaper will react whenever you touch them.

* Cinematic wallpapers: The cinematic wallpaper feature allows users to transform any photo from their camera roll into a 3D image with motion effects, which can then be used as a background. By using a sparkle icon button, you can create a parallax effect for your photos that responds to the tilt of your device.

Android 14 features

Google has partnered with iQOO, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi to further develop and optimise Android 14. It is also interesting to note that Samsung is missing from the Android 14 beta program.

If you recently bought a flagship smartphone from either of these brands, your device is likely to get the early beta build of Android 14.

Google Pixel Tablet with 10.95-inch WQXGA display, bundled Charging Speaker Dock launched globally: Price, Specifications

Google Pixel Tablet

HIGHLIGHTS

* Google Pixel Tablet has been launched globally at the I/O Developer’s Conference.
* The tablet ships with a 10.95-inch display, Tensor G2 chipset, Android 13 OS, and a 27Wh battery.
* Google Pixel Tablet price starts at $499 (around Rs. 40,900).
* It means you can expect exclusive Pixel features – be it for photography or productivity.
* Some of the Google apps are also optimised for this form factor.

Google Pixel Tablet has been officially launched at the company’s I/O Developer’s conference. This is the first tablet in the Pixel series and is a return for Google to the tablet market.

The tablet attaches to the charging dock with a speaker to enhance the audio quality. The Pixel Tablet has quad speakers and a nano-ceramic coating.

When the Pixel Tablet is docked, it acts as a hands-free Assistant or a Photo frame.
The tablet can control all smart home devices with the Google Home app that has been redesigned.

Google Pixel Tablet

The Google Pixel Tablet was officially launched at the Google I/O 2023 tonight (May 10).
The company teased the device first at the Pixel 7 series launch in October last year.

The new product also marks Google’s entry into the tablet, which is mostly dominated by Apple’s iPads and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S and A-series products. Google states the tablet market has not significantly “changed” and the Pixel Tablet would address these problems.

It is powered by Google’s proprietary Google Tensor G2 SoC, which also features in Google Pixel 7 smartphone series.

Google Pixel Tablet

The Google Pixel Tablet is available in three colours, giving customers ample amount of options.

At its I/O annual developer conference today, Google took a short break from uttering the word “AI” all the time to unveil some new hardware.

And just as we expected, the Pixel Tablet is now fully official. First teased last year, it’s definitely been a long time coming.

The Pixel Tablet has a 10.95-inch 2560×1600 LCD screen with 500 nits of typical brightness, “anti-smudge coating”, and support for USI 2.0 styluses. It’s powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chipset, and features the Titan M2 security coprocessor. You get 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Google Pixel Tablet

The tablet features a pair of seemingly identical 8 MP fixed focus cameras, one on the front, one on the back.

There’s a fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button, and a “27-watt-hour” battery which should last for “up to 12 hours of video streaming”.

Naturally, the Pixel Tablet runs Android 13, and it will get five years of updates.
It has four speakers and three mics and will be available in Porcelain, Hazel, and Rose.

In the box, you’ll find the tablet and a charging speaker dock, as well as a power brick for the dock.

This has a magnetic docking interface with pogo pins, and 15W maximum charging rate. There’s one 43.5mm full-range speaker inside.

Google Pixel Tablet

The idea here is that when you aren’t actively using the tablet, it can become a smart display – or a smart speaker with a display attached to it.

2) How is Charging speaker dock?

Ans) The Google Pixel Tablet comes with a charging speaker dock, where the tablet attaches magnetically. The key use case of this is that when you aren’t using the tablet actively, it becomes a smart display or a smart speaker. When you are watching a video or playing music and place the tablet on the dock, it seamlessly transfers the audio to the dock’s speaker.

When the tablet is docked on the speaker, it can show a slideshow of images from Google Photos album and there is also a quick access button to the Google Home app to control smart home devices. The lock screen won’t show any personal information like notifications.

3) What is Pricing and availability of Google Pixel Tablet ?

Ans) The Google Pixel Tablet comes in Hazel, Porcelain and Rose colours and is priced starting at $499 (Rs. 40,880 approx.) for the 128GB model and the 256GB model costs $599 (Rs. 49,075 approx.).

There are several accessories such as Pixel Tablet Case that protects from scratches and drop and has a built-in polished metal ring stand. There is also a speck StandyShell Case.
The tablet is available to order from today in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States, and will roll out starting from June 20th.

4) What are Google Pixel Tablet prices?

Ans) The Google Pixel Tablet starts at $499, which is roughly Rs 40,000 for the base 128GB storage model. Google has clarified that the Pixel Tablet is available for pre-order in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Japan and Australia today, and sale starts on June 20. It means the tablet will not be sold in India.
Google is also bundling the charging dock for free.

5) What are Google Pixel Tablet features and functionalities?

Ans) Since it is a Google tablet, the Pixel Tablet is powered by Android, likely Android 13 at first. It means you can expect exclusive Pixel features – be it for photography or productivity. Some of the Google apps are also optimised for this form factor.

Additionally, if you’re already using Google apps like Gmail, Calendar, Meet, Messages, Photos, Drive, and YouTube, you can expect cross-connectivity. It means users do not have to worry about transferring. Speaking of data transferring, there’s also Nearby Share, Google’s answer to AirDrop to share files wirelessly and seamlessly.

Other key features of the tablet include quad speaker system, three microphones, a USB-C charging port, side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and support for Wi-Fi 6. Google has also unveiled a hub that doubles as a speaker, making the Google Pixel Tablet an Amazon Echo Show-like portable device. The hub also acts like a charger and Pixel tablet can turn into a digital photo frame.

6) SPECIFICATIONS OF GOOGLE’S FIRST TABLET EMERGES ONLINE: COULD DETHRONE IPAD IN TERMS OF VALUE.Details?

Ans) Google gave a sneak peek of the Pixel tablet during last year’s I/O event. This year, at I/O ’23 (set to kick off on May 10), the company is likely to unveil its highly anticipated tablet. Alongside this release, the event will also see the introduction of the Pixel 7a and Google’s maiden foldable device, the Pixel Fold.

Although Google has already revealed some details about the tablet, a recent leak occurred when an Amazon Japan listing (which has since been taken down) disclose everything about the device.

7) Google Pixel Tablet will feature an in-house Tensor chip.Details?

Ans) The listing provides confirmation that the Pixel Tablet will come with Google’s in-house Tensor G2 chip. It is the same system-on-a-chip (SoC) found in the Pixel 7 series, including the upcoming Pixel 7a. It will be accompanied by 8GB of RAM and a choice between 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Additionally, the tablet will sport a 10.95-inch QHD+ LCD display. The panel will have a 16:10 aspect ratio and a rated brightness of 500 nits. Notably, it will support USI 2.0 stylus support for those who like to draw or create digital art.

The tablet will also have 8MP cameras on both the front and back with an f/2.0 aperture. However, the video recording capability will only be limited to 1080p resolution. The camera hardware on the Pixel Tablet will not match the quality of Pixel smartphones. But coming from Google, you can expect access to exclusive features like Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur.

The listing also reveals other specifications of the device. It includes quad speakers, 3 microphones, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port, a 4-pin accessory connector, and a physical mute switch. Likewise, the connectivity options include WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and Ultrawide Band support.

8) How is the separate charging/speaker dock?

Ans) Furthermore, Google has officially confirmed that the Pixel Tablet will come with a charging cum speaker dock. This will bring along extra functionalities and convenience to the users. For instance, when you’re not using the tablet, you can simply dock it and use it as a smart hub while charging the device. This will enable you to control various smart home accessories, such as turning off lights, adjusting thermostats, and more.

You will also be able to use the tablet as a photo frame while in dock mode. The built-in speakers in the dock will enhance the audio quality of the tablet. As a result, it can also be a perfect device for watching movies, listening to music, or making video calls. Leaks suggest that Google might bundle the dock with the tablet itself, so you wouldn’t need to purchase it separately.

9) What is Google Pixel Tablet: Price?

Ans) Although Google is yet to disclose the official price, the Amazon Japan Listing suggests it could cost 79,800 yen (~$592). For that price, the Pixel tablet could offer great value for users. And there’s finally a possibility that it could challenge Apple’s dominance in the tablet market. Since Google has complete control over both the hardware and software of the device, it can finally tune the user experience to create a worthy competitor in this space.

At a similar price, you’ll have the option to choose a 10th Gen iPad. But it only offers 64GB of storage—a meager amount for those with storage-intensive apps. So you can choose the 256GB option which will cost you $599. But even then, you’d be limited to the support of the first-generation Apple Pencil. In contrast, the Pixel Tablet likely presents a more enticing option. It will come with updated hardware and compatibility with the support for the latest accessories. Rumors suggest that the charging/speaker dock might even be included in the price, making it an unbeatable deal.

Ans) Google has finally unveiled its long-awaited foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, at this year’s I/O conference. With rumors and leaks circulating for years, tech enthusiasts and Pixel fans alike have been eagerly anticipating the official announcement. And now, it’s finally here.

The Pixel Fold features a unique mini-tablet-shaped design that sets it apart from other foldable devices on the market. It boasts a stunning 7.6-inch flexible OLED display that can fold in half to easily fit into your pocket or purse. The device comes in two elegant colors: porcelain and obsidian.

Under the hood, the Pixel Fold is powered by the Tensor G2 chipset, Google’s latest and most powerful mobile processor yet. This ensures a smooth and seamless performance, even when running multiple apps or demanding games.

One of the standout features of the Pixel Fold is the dual screen interpreter mode, which allows for split-screen mode with two apps side by side. This is particularly useful for multitasking and productivity, as well as for using the device as a mini-laptop replacement.

For added security and convenience, the Pixel Fold comes with Pixel safe, Pixel speech, and Pixel assist, which enable users to keep their personal information safe and access the device’s features with voice commands. The camera setup on the Pixel Fold is also impressive, featuring a high-quality lens that takes stunning photos and videos. It is also equipped with Pixel speech, which allows for hands-free operation of the camera and other features.

5) Google Pixel Fold might be the cleanest foldable device.Details?

Ans) Expected hardware specifications
The most eye-catching among all the features that the Pixel foldable is expected to have is its design element. The device has unnoticeably thin bezels, and the initial renders posted by Google on Twitter look stunning.

The Google Pixel Fold’s Tensor G2 processor, 8 gigabytes of RAM, a sizable 120Hz 7.6-inch OLED or AMOLED display, and a triple camera setup on the back panel are the key specifications we expect to see in the box. We can expect Google’s latest foldable to have the same beautiful, color-accurate images that it is known for producing for its software processing.

The price point where Google would like to attract customers with its phones is around $1650, which is the average price at which Samsung typically releases its Galaxy Fold smartphones. This selling price will be insanely attractive for a foldable device that offers the cleanest Android experience with user customizability.

We were expecting the device to be announced during the Google I/O event as per past rumors, and today Google officially confirmed its launch date to be May 10. On the same day, the product will also be up for preorder on the Google Store, giving eager consumers and enthusiasts first dibs.

It will open a little later, on May 30, for wireless carriers and other retailers. The date of the final retail release is currently projected to be June 27.
The Pixel foldable might not be affordable for everyone, but it is not insanely expensive considering its gorgeous design and Pixel-grade cameras. So far, the device seems pretty promising, and we have to wait for the official release of the smartphone to confirm what specs it will hold.

Along with the Pixel 7a and Fold, the Google Tablet will likely receive some announcements at the I/O 2023 event. We can only wait until that time, and Google has shown that it was worthwhile to wait for its product.

6) What is Google Pixel Fold price and release date?

Ans) The Google Pixel Fold was announced at Google I/O, following an official tease on 4 May that confirmed the date and revealed the design. The Pixel Fold is priced at $1800 in the US, while it costs £1750 in the UK. That’s right, this is an expensive device, outstripping the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 when it comes to price.
The Google Pixel Fold is going on pre-order through the Google Store, in the US, UK, Germany and Japan initially, so you’ll be able to claim your device – and for those pre-ordering in the US, that will include a free Pixel Watch.
The shipping date is still is going to be around late June or early July.

7) How is Google Pixel Fold design?

Ans) * 139.7 x 79.5 x 12.1mm (folded); 139.7 x 158.7 x 5.8mm (unfolded), 283g
* Book-like foldable design
* Glass and aluminium, IPX8
* Obsidian and Porcelain colours

The Google Pixel Fold is clearly an evolution of the Pixel 7 design, with a similar look to the frame. The camera on the rear sits in a raised section, similar to the camera bar on the Pixel 7 Pro, but it doesn’t stretch right from edge to edge.

Google told us that the big problem with folding phones at the moment is how thick they are when folded, so the aim of the Pixel Fold design was to result in a slimmer device and to offer a more usable external display. At 5.8mm thick when unfolded, it’s going to be slim in the hand – although it’s not the slimmest out there, with the Huawei Mate X3 being just 5.3mm thick – and 11.08mm when folded, about a millimetre thinner than the Pixel Fold. However, the Pixel Fold is slimmer than Samsung’s rival, which is 6.3mm thick unfolded, but up to 15.8mm thick folded because of the hinge design.

Google has used stainless steel for the hinge, with a polished aluminium frame and Gorilla Glass Victus for the cover and rear glass panels. The whole thing has an IPX8 rating, meaning it’s water-resistant, but has no dust protection. The hinge will allow you to stand the phone at various angles, so you can use tabletop mode for taking photos for example, giving you loads of versatility.

There are two colours – Obsidian (black) and Porcelain (white ish) – and as we said, the frame and buttons look like the rest of the pixel family, as do the speaker grilles and everything else. There are stereo speakers supporting spatial audio.

The power button incorporates a fingerprint scanner for unlocking, with facial recognition also supported.

8) How is Pixel Fold display?

Ans) * Internal: 7.6in, OLED, 2208 x 1840 (380ppi), 120Hz, 1450 nits peak, HDR, 24-bit
* Cover: 5.8in, OLED, 2092 x 1080 (408ppi), 120Hz, 1550 nits peak, HDR, 24-bit
There’s a 7.6-inch internal display with a 2208 x 1840 pixel resolution resulting in 380ppi with a 6:5 aspect ratio. This means it’s not quite square, but it is a big space. Google doesn’t declare who the supplier of the folding panel is, but does say that it uses Ultra Thin Glass with a protective plastic layer, so it sounds like it’s a Samsung display. There’s an impressive 1450 nit peak brightness, so that should drive your HDR content really well and make everything look great.

The external display measures 5.8-inches and has a 2092 x 1080 pixel resolution meaning 408ppi and a 17.4:9 aspect ratio. It’s not the largest display on the exterior of a folding phone, but it’s wider than you’ll get from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, so might prove a little more useful. There’s a punch hole for the exterior camera. Again there’s a 1550 nits peak brightness, and a 1200 nits normal brightness, so the external display should also be great in bright conditions outdoors.

What we don’t really know is what sort of display crease there might be or how well it will withstand vigorous use.

9) What are Pixel Fold hardware specs?

Ans) * Google Tensor G2, 12GB RAM, 256/512GB storage
* 4821mAh, 30W wired, Qi standard wireless charging

The Pixel Fold is powered by Tensor G2. That’s Google’s in-house hardware found in the Pixel 7, which you can read more about in our explainer feature. This chipset might not match up to Snapdragon-powered rivals like the Galaxy Z Fold 4, but it’s still powerful and enables a lot of neat features in the current Pixels. It’s backed by 12GB RAM and 256 or 512GB storage – although there may be some regional variation here.

There’s a 4821mAh battery, which is said to support Google’s 30W charger for faster recharging, while also offering Qi wireless charging. Google says that you’ll get over 24 hours of battery from the Pixel Fold.

As to the actual performance, we don’t yet know exactly what the experience will be like. Google has redesigned a lot of Google apps to make better use of the screen space available for a better tablet-like experience. Until we review the Pixel Fold, however, we won’t know exactly how smooth the experience is. Having used Pixel Tensor G2 devices in the past, we have no doubt it will be nice and fast.

10) How is Pixel Fold cameras?

Ans) * External (triple camera system):
* Main: 48MP, 1/2in sensor, 0.8µm, f/1.7, OIS
* Ultrawide: 10.8MP, 1/3in sensor, 1.25µm, f/2.2, 121.1°
* Telephoto: 10.8MP, 1/3.1in sensor, 1.22µm, f/3.05, 5x optical, 20x Super Res Zoom
* Front: 9.5MP, 1.22µm, f/2.2, fixed focus
* Internal:
* 8MP, 1.12µm, f/2.0, fixed focus

There’s no shortage of cameras on the Pixel Fol; because there’s more sides and ways to hold and use cameras, you end up with effectively two “front” cameras, one on the external display and one on the internal display. Such is the way with this style of folding phone.

It’s also inescapable that the main camera on the rear can be used as a selfie camera too, because you can just open the whole thing up, using the external display as a viewfinder. That means that Google can say this is the highest quality selfie camera it has put on a Pixel phone, because it’s referring to that main rear camera.

Worth noting is the 5x periscope optical zoom and combined hybrid Super Res Zoom out to 20x, as well as the ultrawide, so there’s a full system of cameras to play with here. We suspect that the internal camera is going to be the weakest performer, but it’s also generally the most fiddly to use on a folding phone. We can’t assess the full performance of these cameras until we review the Pixel Fold, but given that much of the performance is driven by Google’s computational algorithms, we are expecting great performance. You’ll get all the fun features like Night Sight, Magic Eraser and more.

11) How is Pixel Fold software?

Ans) * Android 13
* 5 years of updates
Google is keen to point out that a lot of work has been done to improve the software experience for the Pixel Fold. It runs Android 4 and will have 5 years of Pixel Updates, which we suspect will equate to four OS version updates and 5 years of security updates. The modifications made for the larger display include adapting over 50 Google apps and working with partners to create better big screen experiences – that includes apps like Minecraft, Candy Crush, Evernote, Deezer, Kobo, TikTok, Spotify, Disney+ and more.

One of the native elements will be a split screen experience, drag and drop and with that tabletop mode supporting apps like Netflix and youTube. We’ve seen similar from Samsung, but it’s going to be great to see Google offering this natively.

On top of this you’ll get the clean experience that Pixel is known for, avoiding the pre-installs, duplication and bloat that some rivals will push on you. The other side of this benefit is that we’d expect the Pixel Fold to be front of the queue when it comes to updates. That’s on top of the smart functions that Google enables via AI, such as the transcribing recorder, dual screen live translation and a whole lot more.

5) Is Pixel 7a is the new value champ?

Ans) With an affordable price tag, Pixel 7a could be a great option in the mid-range category, especially in markets like the US, which is dominated by Samsung and Apple flagships.

The smartphone brings essentially the same design as the vanilla Pixel 7, featuring a bar-like camera module with a matte aluminum cover.

The display is flat and the bezels are noticeable but at least they are even on all sides.
Talking about the hardware specs, the smartphone retains Pixel 6a’s compact 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED display but Google has upgraded the refresh rate from 60Hz to a decent 90Hz. Under the hood, it gets the home-brewed Tensor G2 chipset, which also powers the flagship Pixel 7 Pro.

While the chip’s benchmark scores are not comparable to even Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, it is said to be a more intelligent and efficient processor.

Fueled by a 4386mAh battery unit, the Pixel 7a supports underwhelming 18W wired charging and comes with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.

* Google had announced the launch of a new Pixel phone in India, on May 11th
* The Google Pixel 7a price and offers are already live on the Flipkart site

Hours before Google could officially announce the entry of its latest Pixel 7-series phone in India and globally, Flipkart took matters in their own hands and leaked the Google Pixel 7a India price.

This comes after a promo video of the Pixel 7a leaked earlier in the day, while the specifications and renders of the phone have already leaked earlier.

Google I/O event. It has been already confirmed that the handset will launch in India on May 11. Ahead of the smartphone’s official launch, the company has teased the price and an early bird offer for the Pixel 7a.

The smartphone is expected to sport an improved display over its successor. Once launched in India, the phone will be available for purchase via Flipkart.

Google Pixel 7a

Ahead of the phone’s official launch in India on May 11, tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd) has shared an official poster from Google, revealing the price range of the smartphone, along with the early bird offer.

Gadgets360 has also confirmed the same on the official page of Flipkart. The poster reveals that Pixel 7a will launch in India at a starting price of Rs. 39,999. One can also avail it at an EMI of Rs. 3,333 per month.

However, the price seems to be a part of an early bird offer that includes an HDFC bank card discount offer of Rs. 4,000 or an exchange offer of Rs. 4,000.

To recall, the Google Pixel 6a was also launched at Rs 43,999 in India. With bank offers, the device was also being sold for Rs 39,999 as an introductory offer.

Google Pixel 7a

However, soon after the price of the Pixel 6a was drastically reduced on the retail stores as well as the online stores. The device currently sells for Rs 27,999 but with bank offers.

Previous leaks have suggested that the purported smartphone will be priced at SGD 749 (roughly Rs. 46,000) for the global 128GB storage variant. Additionally, the Pixel 7a is tipped to launch in three colour options — Charcoal, Blue, and Snow.

Google Pixel 7a

A few days back, the promotional images of Pixel 7a were teased on Flipkart ahead of May 11 launch in India. It could be verified that the phone is similar to Pixel 7 series in terms of display. However, the company did not reveal any official information on the same.

As per a previous report revealing the key specifications of the smartphone, the Google Pixel 7a is likely to be powered by a Tensor G2 SoC. It will reportedly sport a 6.1-inch Full-HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate.

The smartphone is also expected to ship with a dual rear camera unit, with a 64-megapixel primary sensor and a 12-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide lens. For selfies, it could house a 13-megapixel front camera.

Coming back to the Pixel 7a, Google is yet to confirm the official price of the smartphone so we will take the information with a grain of salt.

Google Pixel 7a But if what the leaksters are claiming turns out to be true, the competition needs to be worried. Currently, the OnePlus 11R is the only device in the sub-Rs 40,000 segment that rules the roost.

However, if the Pixel 7a comes at around the same price point, it can pose a threat to the likes of OnePlus 11R. The Pixel 7a is speculated to not only flaunt the same design as the Pixel 7 but also carry some of its specifications.

Pixel 7a is expected to feature a 6.1-inch FHC+ 90hz OLED display. The smartphone will be powered by a Tensor G2 chipset, which is further boosted using LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage standards.

Notably, the Tensor G2 chipset currently drives the show in the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro. In terms of camera, the Pixel 7a is said to feature a dual camera setup at the rear which can include a 64MP Sony IMX787 sensor accompanied by a 12-megapixel sensor.

The front camera specs are not out yet but some reports had previously stated that the Pixel 7a will feature the 10.8-megapixel lens as the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro.

WhatsApp found using mic when the phone isn’t in use; company says it’s an Android bug; Elon Musk Says WhatsApp is not trustworthy

0

HIGHLIGHTS

* WhatsApp was found using the microphone on Android phones even when the app is closed.
* This was raised by a Twitter engineer who shared screenshots of WhatsApp’s microphone activity.
* WhatsApp responded saying that issue is a bug in the Android system.

Some WhatsApp users on Android have noticed recently that the microphone seems to be in use more than it’s supposed to be, but WhatsApp claims this is a problem on Google’s end rather than its own.

It’s been reported over the past several weeks by quite a few users that WhatsApp for Android is triggering the microphone permission even when the app isn’t being actively used. This can be seen through the “green dot” indicator that appears whenever the microphone or camera is being used.

As the folks over at PiunikaWeb documented last week, that’s what some users have been seeing from WhatsApp for upwards of a month.

WhatsApp users

A history of this microphone use can also be seen in Android’s Privacy Dashboard on more recent versions of the OS. That’s where Foad Dabiri, an engineer at Twitter, first noticed this problem and brought a spotlight onto it.

His Pixel 7 Pro captured nine separate reports of WhatsApp for Android using the microphone permission in the background while his phone wasn’t even active – Dabiri says he was asleep at the time, and this is just a small portion of what the phone captured.

Since it’s not an isolated incident, it’s certainly a worrying problem. It’s also happening across multiple Android devices and versions, with users reporting the issue on Pixel phones and a few different Samsung models.

The underlying cause isn’t entirely clear as there’s no “fix” at the moment, but WhatsApp claims this is a bug within Android itself. The Meta-owned company turned to Twitter today to say that it “believes” this is an issue with Android’s Privacy Dashboard, with the Dashboard “misattributing” this information to WhatsApp. The company then says it has asked Google to investigate the matter.

In a reply, WhatsApp reiterates that “users have full control over their mic settings” and that the app only uses the microphone when a user is making a call or sending a voice note/video.

WhatsApp users

WhatsApp is apparently using the microphone on Android phones more than it should. A WhatsApp user shared the app’s microphone activity on a Pixel phone and it showed that the mic was used at frequent intervals and when the app wasn’t in use at all. WhatsApp did respond to this but it’s claiming that issue is on Google’s end and not the messaging app.

This issue was raised Foad Dabiri, a Twitter engineer who shared a screenshot of WhatsApp’s microphone activity on his Pixel 7 Pro. Dabiri said that WhatsApp has been using the microphone while he was asleep and when he woke up.

The screenshot shows a detailed timeline of WhatsApp’s microphone activity and we can see that the mic is used in very short time intervals ranging between two minutes, four minutes, and ten minutes. What’s clear is that the phone is idle during this time with no activity from the user’s side.

The tweet surely grabbed a lot of attention with over 66 million views with even Elon Musk replying to it saying, “That’s weird.”

WhatsApp users

In response to this issue, WhatsApp said that they’ve been in touch with the Twitter engineer for the same. It added that the bug is actually on Android’s Privacy Dashboard which is mis-attributing information. WhatsApp said that they’ve asked Google to investigate and remediate the issue.

WhatsApp also reassured users that they have full control over their mic settings. As for when the mic used, WhatsApp said it happens only when “a user is making a call or recording a voice note or video.” Even during this time, the conversations are end-to-end encrypted.

This isn’t an isolated incident though as there have been reports of WhatsApp users on Android raising the same issue. In a report by PiunikaWeb, WhatsApp users have pointed out that the green notification dot that appears when the mic is in use blinks even when the app is not in use.

Google is yet to respond to this issue and confirm whether it indeed is a bug on Android. But unauthorised usage of the phone’s mic is seriously concerning especially when it’s the most widely used messaging app.

WhatsApp users

Faqs

1) WhatsApp’s Android app using mic even when it isn’t being used. Details

Ans) While WhatsApp is working on a bunch of new features for its messaging app, there is a big bug that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. According to several user reports, because of an underlying bug, WhatsApp is continuously using the mic even when the user closes the app. This issue appears to be affecting several Android smartphones, including ones from Samsung and Google.

A Twitter engineer brought this WhatsApp mic bug to light and posted a screenshot of the history of the microphone activity in Android’s Privacy Dashboard. It clearly shows the WhatsApp app accessing the mic very frequently. Moreover, the microphone activity was clearly visible through the green dot notification on the Android status bar as well.

WhatsApp responded to the serious user reports, claiming that the issue lies with the Android OS and not the app itself. WhatsApp claims that there is an underlying bug within the Android OS that is ‘miss-attributing’ information in the privacy dashboard, and the Facebook-owned messaging app has asked Google to investigate it further.

The worst part is that WhatsApp’s response did not come until billionaire Elon Musk shared his opinion on this matter via his official Twitter platform. And as you might have guessed, Musk’s reaction wasn’t positive, and he accused WhatsApp of not being trustworthy. Whatever the case may be, this is a worrying situation for the billions who use WhatsApp, as their privacy is at risk. As of now, there isn’t a fix available for this bug.

2) WhatsApp cannot be trusted, says Elon Musk as Google confirms ‘issue’ in Android app. Details?

Ans) Elon Musk isn’t a fan of Meta or its group of companies. He has openly endorsed Signal, a rival messaging app of WhatsApp. In the past, he also urged users to delete their Facebook accounts. So it’s no surprise to see his latest dig at a Meta-owned app.

A Twitter engineer posted a tweet regarding a bug on WhatsApp. Foad Dabiri in a tweet noted that, “WhatsApp has been using the microphone in the background, while I was asleep and since I woke up at 6AM (and that’s just a part of the timeline!) What’s going on?”. His tweet evoked a reply from Musk where he said, “WhatsApp cannot be trusted.”

3) What is the ‘issue’ with WhatsApp?

Ans) Dabiri shared a screenshot of the Android Dashboard which showed that microphone access was on for WhatsApp. Users have the option to allow and disallow access to apps and it shouldn’t be used in the background.

4) What does WhatsApp have to say about the matter?

Ans) The instant messaging app confirmed that they had gotten in touch with Dabiri. “Over the last 24 hours we’ve been in touch with a Twitter engineer who posted an issue with his Pixel phone and WhatsApp,” as per a tweet by WhatsApp’s official account.

WhatsApp has said that the issue seems to be with Android and not with its own app.“We believe this is a bug on Android that mis-attributes information in their Privacy Dashboard and have asked Google to investigate and remediate.”

Google, on the other hand, didn’t say much about the bug but did confirm that it is looking into the matter. “We are aware of the issue and are working closely with WhatsApp to investigate,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

WhatsApp also reiterated that it gives users complete control over their microphone settings. “Once granted permission, WhatsApp only accesses the mic when a user is making a call or recording a voice note or video – and even then, these communications are protected by end-to-end encryption so WhatsApp cannot hear them,” the app said in another tweet.
