  • AI developments will accelerate in the coming years.
  • Google AI model Gemini compared to ChatGPT for ecosystem integration.
  • Practical applications of AI include email summarization and multimodal interaction.

Artificial intelligence is fast making its place in our daily lives.

As AI evolves, critical discussions are going on regarding its future consequences.

In a recent interview with Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai touched on this issue.

Google CEO said, “In the next few years, we will have AI that has the illusion of consciousness, and you may not be able to tell the difference. However, this is different from AI actually being conscious, which is a very deep philosophical topic.“

Sundar Pichai on AI

Pichai sat for an interview with YouTuber Hayls World, with much of the topic being on AI.

Being the CEO of one of the largest AI research and development firms globally, Pichai presented unique insight from an insider’s perspective on where this technology is heading.

One of the other main concerns that Pichai commented on regarding the future of AI was that, eventually, it could become conscious.

He said that within the next few years, we can expect to see AI that has the “illusion” of being conscious—systems that appear self-aware but don’t actually, in a philosophical sense.

One of the most interesting issues raised by this was those around the capacity for future AI.

Pichai mentioned some of the current practical applications, including how AI can summarize emails in Gmail or connect with other Google products and services.

How close is AI to sentience?

Apple to Launch iPhone 16 First in South Korea Amid Battle with Samsung

Apple to Launch iPhone 16 First in South Korea Amid Battle with Samsung

Highlights

  • Apple plans to release iPhone 16 first in South Korea to challenge Samsung.
  • iPhone 16 expected to hit the market early to mid-September.
  • South Korean carriers neither confirm nor deny early iPhone 16 release.
  • Apple aims to capitalize on younger generations’ preference for iPhones.

Apple is walking on thin ice while sorting out problems in the Chinese market while also catching up in the AI race.

Moreover, reports indicate that the upcoming iPhone 16 would only have incremental improvements over its predecessor.

In response, the digital behemoth looks toward South Korea as a battleground to challenge Samsung’s supremacy in its home market.

Global economic factors like inflation impacting production costs.
Apple aims to capitalize on younger generations’ preference for iPhones.

Historically, Apple releases new iPhones in stages across global markets, not always in the initial wave that includes South Korea.

This is a delay, which is done deliberately by Apple because of the strict secrecy policies of the company because the country’s obligatory certification process with the National Radio Research Agency raises the chance of early spec leaks.

South Korea to Get iPhone 16 First?

This year might be a dramatic deviation from the norm, though.

According to Korea’s ETNews, for the first time since 2009, South Korean consumers will be one of the first people to receive the iPhone 16.

Although the country’s carriers have refused to corroborate the notion, they have also refused to refute it.

iPhone 16 could feature up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB baseline storage.

Citing a rumour, it claims that the iPhone 16 is purported to hit the market early to mid-September.

For reference, the iPhone 15 this year only hit South Korean shelves on October 13, some weeks after the initial major market introduction on September 22.

Apple has determined that it will do better in South Korea than before.

Reports have it that younger generations in the country are hooked on Apple’s branded smartphones, and this may eventually drive away buyers from Samsung’s goods that focus on AI.

The huge popularity of the iPhone 15 in South Korea upon its release is pretty damning evidence of the region’s importance.

However, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 did very well as well, with its pre-order breaking all records in different areas, including its own country, and outperforming even the triumph of the Galaxy S8.

By launching the iPhone 16 in South Korea first, Apple will be trying to capitalize on its brand’s charm and possibly convince consumers before Samsung fires back with its AI-powered artillery.

This planned move might tip the balances in Apple’s favour, bolstering its position in a market long dominated by the local IT powerhouse.

Whether this gambit pays off or prompts a fierce response from Samsung remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the battle for supremacy in the Korean market is heating up.

Upcoming OPPO, Realme, OnePlus Flagship Smartphones to Feature Massive 6000mAh Batteries, Leak Suggests

0
OnePlus 13, Oppo Find X8, and Realme GT6 Pro to get 6,000 mAh batteries
Oppo (including Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme) produced a total of 33.8 million units in the first quarter.

Highlights

  • New flagship phones expected to feature 6000mAh batteries.
  • Oppo Find X8 series and other major models to debut larger batteries.
  • Higher performance chipsets like Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 driving battery increase.
  • Potential weight and bulk increase in next-gen flagship devices.

According to the new leak coming from Weibo tipster “Smart Pikachu,” some major forthcoming flagship smartphones would have a huge 6000mAh battery capacity.

We’re expecting larger cells in the upcoming Oppo Find X8 series, the company’s future book-style foldable, the Realme GT6 Pro, and the OnePlus 13.

Performance Demands Forcing the Hand

OnePlus 13, Oppo Find X8, and Realme GT6 Pro to get 6,000 mAh batteries

The shift to 6000mAh batteries is probable because of the performance requirements of next-generation flagship chipsets that would power them.

Earlier speculations suggested that some of these future phones would employ powerful new CPUs, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and MediaTek Dimensity 9400.

Increased performance usually means increased power consumption.

The big batteries could result in heavier smartphones

Thus, manufacturers may use much bigger battery capacities in order not only to make efficiency choices but maintain a decent battery life.

Increasing the battery capacity will increase the overall weight and bulk of the device.

By comparison, the Oppo Find X7 and Find X7 Ultra used 5000mAh batteries, while the Realme GT5 Pro and OnePlus 12 used slightly larger 5400mAh cells.

The bigger batteries could be using Silicon Anode technology for higher power density
According to leaker Smart Pikachu (via Weibo), the OPPO Find X8 series, OnePlus 13, and Realme GT 6 Pro will carry a 6,000-millimetre cell

Despite their relatively high capacities already, those devices weighed between 202 and 224 grams.

Adding an extra 600mAh without utilizing lighter materials could push the weight up considerably on this new generation.

The Oppo Find X8 series, for its part, is said to come earlier than usual—to be specific, this October.

That coincides with the public announcement of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip from Qualcomm during its annual Snapdragon Summit, also to be held in October.

Oppo might have plans for the Find X8 series to debut shortly thereafter, perhaps taking advantage of the latest and greatest Snapdragon flagship silicon

According to an earlier DCS claim, smartphones featuring Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC would demand “high-density” batteries. The higher energy density could be because of silicon anode battery technology

Going by previous speculations, the demand might be for larger batteries because of the higher-clocked performance cores on the Gen 4 chip and the enhanced Adreno GPU.

Other models, like the Dimensity 9400 in some Find X8 models, are paired with high-end CPU cores like a Cortex-X5 Prime, three X4 Primes, and four A720 performance cores into a powerful yet potentially power-greedy device.

YouTube Targets Ad Blockers with Video Skipping Glitch: Users Report Issues

Highlights

  • YouTube videos skip to the end when adblockers are active.
  • Problem affects first play and repeat attempts.
  • Issue resolved by disabling adblocker extensions.
  • Likely an effort by YouTube to discourage adblocker usage.

YouTube has been clamping down on the use of ad blockers on its site for a while.

Last year, the site started showing up notifications asking users to disable adblocking add-ons, which would block video playback if ignored.

That encouraged many people to uninstall adblockers or concoct creative workarounds.

This week brought a new weird problem for adblocker users: YouTube videos are suddenly jumping to the conclusion as soon as they begin playing.

Even when folks at 9to5Google replay the video, it skips right to the last few seconds of it.

New Youtube adblock weird behaviour – video automatically skips to the end
byu/SDHD4K inyoutube

This annoying behavior seems to affect just those who have an adblocker running.

The problem is fixed when the extension is disabled.

“Yes, this is exactly my issue. They’re making this algorithm where if they detect an adblocker, it causes this to happen,” The-Kabster-Cow speculates. “It’s to make it seem like some sort of bug caused by the adblocker, but it’s definitely intentional by [YouTube], since they know they aren’t allowed to directly tell us to stop using the adblocker.”

Reddit user SDHD4K showed what YouTube’s latest tactic looks like: “There’s no sound whenever I use ad blocker on YT. you can adjust the volume slider for a second then it goes mute again,” wrote user freemanhl2 on the Reddit thread, while user Vampirehedgehog wrote, “Oh my god this is happening to me too! It’s so annoying I can’t figure out what’s wrong. Well at least I’m not the only one who’s having this problem.”

YouTube Coming Down Hard on Ad Blockers

YouTube's crackdown on adblockers now includes videos skipping to the end for affected users
YouTube’s crackdown on adblockers now includes videos skipping to the end for affected users

Users are reporting that video skipping takes place both the first play and when repeating material.

Efforts to skip to any place along the video chronology has been known to freeze on a loading screen.

The exact cause is not known, but many believe this is an intentional effort by YouTube to discourage adblocker usage on the platform.

YouTube Tests New 'Most Relevant' Subscription Feed on Mobile
Users are forced to disable their adblockers or switch to another one to resolve the issue

This is probably plausible, given the stance of the company on ad blocking.

It is also possible that the problem is being caused by the adblocker software.

Earlier in 2023, a flaw in the popular AdBlock plugin caused YouTube videos to load slowly, putting a strain on user computers.

Some originally accused YouTube before determining the true culprit.

AdBlocker Users Specifically Affected

This issue is mostly troubling those using AdBlock
This issue is mostly troubling those using AdBlock

Surprisingly, the new reports of video skipping seem to target users of AdBlock directly.

So far, little similarities in experience have been seen from users of other adblocker addons.

Yet, a few non-adblocker users have seen the same behavior.

A Widespread Issue but Not Universal
Video shows how YouTube content is going straight to the end for those using an ad blocker

Whether it is an intentional deterrent from YouTube or a technical dispute, the issue reflects the fight that is continuously going on between users and platforms over ad experience.

The more common adblockers become, the more the owners of platforms are likely to continue pushing back with technical means.

FAQs

Why are YouTube videos skipping to the end when using adblockers?

YouTube videos are skipping to the end due to a glitch that seems to specifically target users with adblockers enabled, likely as a measure to discourage their use.

How can I fix the issue of YouTube videos skipping to the end?

Disabling your adblocker extension should fix the issue of YouTube videos skipping to the end and allow for normal playback.

Is YouTube intentionally causing videos to skip for adblocker users?

While not confirmed, many believe YouTube is intentionally causing videos to skip for adblocker users as part of its effort to discourage adblocker usage on its platform.

Are all adblockers causing YouTube videos to skip to the end?

The issue seems to primarily affect users of the AdBlock extension, but some reports indicate that other adblockers may also cause similar problems.

Has this type of issue with adblockers happened before on YouTube?

Yes, earlier in 2023, a flaw in the popular AdBlock plugin caused YouTube videos to load slowly, which was later identified as an issue with the adblocker itself.

Android Users Report Distorted GIFs from iPhones Due to RCS Incompatibility

Android Users Report Distorted GIFs from iPhones Due to RCS Incompatibility

Highlights

  • iPhones sending GIFs to Androids result in distorted images.
  • The issue is due to iPhones using SMS/MMS instead of RCS.
  • Some users fixed the problem by turning off “Send photos faster” in Google Messages.
  • Apple’s iOS 18 with RCS support is expected to resolve the issue.

Something strange is happening: the GIFs are being sent by iPhone users to Androids phone users.

The GIFs are coming through as distorted still images with dots and missing pixels.

The likely cause is that iPhones send GIFs to Android phones via SMS or MMS.

At present, Apple’s iOS doesn’t natively support the RCS messaging system used in Google’s Messages app on Android.

In fact, iOS is expected to get RCS later this year.

Android users in a Reddit thread say they have been receiving the mangled GIFs on devices like Pixels and Galaxy phones.

One Pixel 7 Pro user said they simply turned off the “Send photos faster” setting in Google Messages and it fixed the problem for them.

But another Android user stated disabling that setting wouldn’t work because they already had it turned off and still got distorted GIFs from an iPhone.

Google Support suggests doing a factory reset on the Android phone as one of the potential fixes; however, factory resets are scary for most people because you can lose all your data if you don’t back it up properly.

In "Send photos faster" toggle, open the Google Messages app & tap the profile icon in the upper right corner. From the menu that appears next, tap on Messages settings and toggle off Send photos faster.

If you want to try out the “Send photos faster” toggle, open Google Messages, tap your profile icon, then Messages settings, and turn off “Send photos faster”.

Issue Now Resolved

Some Reddit users believed the deformed GIF images were cool or “dope”.

One Pixel owner stated that they have been receiving these messed up GIFs from iPhones for a few weeks on various Pixel phones.

The issue should be rectified when iOS adds support for RCS texting later this year, possibly with the iOS 18 upgrade in September.

This issue arises as Apple prepares to introduce Rich Communication Services or RCS on the iPhone, with the first beta of iOS 18 expected to be released next month at WWDC 2024.

Apple may add RCS in the first iOS 18 beta release next month at WWDC.

With Apple’s AI aspirations for iOS 18 and the addition of RCS support, iPhone users may be eager to join the iOS 18 beta program when it starts in June.

So for now, Android users may just have to live with some distorted GIFs from their iPhone friends until a proper fix comes along later this year.

Apple to Integrate OpenAI Technology in iOS 18: Enhancing AI Features

Highlights

  • Apple partners with OpenAI to power AI features in iOS 18
  • Potential collaboration with Google for Gemini as an alternative AI solution
  • New AI features to be previewed at WWDC and launched with iPhone 16
  • AI capabilities include transcribing memos, retouching photos, enhancing search, and upgrading Siri

Apple seems to have finally decided on using OpenAI’s technology to power AI features in iOS 18, its upcoming software update for iPhones.

This news has been confirmed by a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who states that the deal with OpenAI could be a significant component of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next month.

OpenAI to Power Apple AI

Apple partners with OpenAI to power AI features in iOS 18

The report further says that Apple is also working on an agreement with Google to provide Gemini as an alternative AI solution.

Barring nothing, Apple is going to be one of the biggest players in the AI space with its huge user base when the new features see the light of day with iOS 18.

Partnering with OpenAI for the AI features of iOS 18 will probably give Apple a competitive edge against Samsung, relying solely on Google’s Gemini AI to run advanced features on the Galaxy S24 lineup.

Revolutionary Features on the Horizon
AI capabilities include transcribing memos, retouching photos, enhancing search, and upgrading Siri

Gurman suggests that these new AI features might at first be marketed as a \”preview\” in the developer beta version of iOS 18.

Apple could then launch a stable version of these features alongside the iPhone 16 in September.

So, how will Apple’s AI features differ from those offered by Samsung and Google?

A Clearer Picture at WWDC

Potential collaboration with Google for Gemini as an alternative AI solution

At the WWDC event in June, Apple is expected to introduce a range of AI features, including capabilities for transcribing memos, retouching photos, enhancing search functionality, and upgrades to Siri, the company’s virtual assistant.

Beyond iOS 18, Apple is said to bring AI features to macOS and iPadOS.

Supposedly, these operating systems will feature software that determines whether a particular task should be run on the device itself or via the cloud.

New AI features to be previewed at WWDC and launched with iPhone 16

On-device AI, however, comes with its own set of advantages: privacy, the ability to function offline or in areas that have poor internet connectivity, and potentially reduced response time.

On-device large language models, on the other hand, do not have the massive servers or billions of parameters behind them—those are reserved for most commercial chatbots like ChatGPT or Geminiand in some cases, could potentially be less powerful or knowledgeable in capability.

A New Direction: Apple's AI Ambitions
WWDC event in June, Apple is expected to introduce a range of AI features

If Apple is using the cloud-based LLM for its iOS 18 AI features, then the tech company faces a challenge of maintaining its privacy-focused image.

According to Gurman, Apple will likely talk up the fact that it won’t be building user profiles in the same way as Google or Meta.

FAQs
