  • Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2’s blood oxygen feature removed due to patent lawsuit.
  • Masimo wins lawsuit leading to sales ban of affected Apple Watch models in the U.S.
  • Indian market offers Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 without feature removal.
  • Masimo CEO criticizes Apple’s blood oxygen technology, questioning its reliability.

Apple’s latest models, the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2, have been at the center of a significant legal battle that’s impacting their functionality.

Particularly for those considering a purchase in the United States, there’s a crucial development: these models will no longer include the blood oxygen monitoring feature, a decision stemming from a lawsuit over patent infringement.

Patent Infringement Lawsuit’s Impact

Caught in a lawsuit against California-based health technology firm Masimo, Apple has faced setbacks.

The International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled in favor of Masimo, leading to a ban on the sale of Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 in the U.S.

Complying with this ruling, Apple removed these models from retail shelves before Christmas, along with an import ban.

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit later confirmed that Apple could not sell models using the disputed technology, prompting Apple to remove the blood oxygen feature.

The blood oxygen monitoring feature, essential for tracking health and wellness, has been a standout aspect of recent Apple Watch models.

Apple’s workaround, following the lawsuit, is to disable this feature.

The decision has significant implications for users who rely on this functionality for health monitoring.

For those in India, the removal of this feature in U.S. models shifts the purchasing decision.

In India, the Apple Watch Series 9 starts at Rs 41,900 (41mm, GPS only) and Rs 44,900 (44mm, GPS only).

The GPS+LTE models are priced higher.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2, starting at Rs 89,900, also offers GPS+LTE and is currently listed as out of stock on Apple’s website.

Despite the controversy in the U.S., existing models with the blood oxygen app can measure oxygen levels.

This feature, available on Series 6 or later, helps users understand their health and wellness, though it’s not intended for medical use.

Users in eligible regions with updated devices can easily set up and use this feature.

On Apple’s support page, this is how the company describes the process:

  • Open the Blood Oxygen app on your Apple Watch.
  • Rest your arm on a table or in your lap, and make sure your wrist is flat, with the Apple Watch display facing up.
  • Tap Start, then hold your arm very still during the 15-second countdown.
  • At the end of the measurement, you receive the results. Tap Done.

Masimo CEO Criticizes Apple’s Implementation

Masimo CEO Criticizes Apple’s Implementation

In the midst of this legal battle, Masimo CEO Joe Kiani has openly criticized Apple’s blood oxygen feature, calling it unreliable and asserting that consumers are better off without it.

Apple has defended the feature, claiming its reliability and potential to save lives.

For buyers, it’s possible to determine if an Apple Watch Series 9 or Ultra 2 has the blood oxygen sensing feature by checking the model number.

This number reveals which batch the watch belongs to – the original with the feature or the modified hardware without it.

FAQs

Why has the blood oxygen monitoring feature been removed from Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 in the U.S.?

The removal of the blood oxygen monitoring feature from Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 in the U.S. is a direct result of a patent infringement lawsuit won by Masimo, a health technology firm.

This legal decision led to a ban on the sale of these models in the U.S., forcing Apple to disable this feature.

Can I still buy Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 with blood oxygen monitoring in India?

Yes, in India, the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 are still available with the blood oxygen monitoring feature.

They are priced starting at Rs 41,900 and Rs 89,900, respectively, for the GPS only and GPS+LTE models.

How can users measure their blood oxygen levels on eligible Apple Watch models?

Users with an Apple Watch Series 6 or later in regions where the feature is available can measure their blood oxygen levels using the Blood Oxygen app.

The process involves resting the arm, starting the measurement in the app, and staying still for a 15-second countdown.

What has been Masimo CEO’s stance on Apple’s blood oxygen technology?

Masimo CEO Joe Kiani has criticized Apple’s implementation of blood oxygen technology in their watches, calling it unreliable.

He argues that consumers would be better off without this feature, which Apple has contested, defending the feature’s reliability and life-saving potential.

How Apple is informing customers about the modified Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2?

Apple has updated its online store to denote the modification required to avoid another import ban on Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2.

Apple has disabled the blood oxygen sensor functionality on new Apple Watch S9 and U2 models sold in the US from today.

Apple has added a new banner to the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 product pages.
“Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 no longer include the Blood Oxygen feature,” reads the banner applied to the checkout flow for both model watches.

Checking the model number for the specific watch you’re buying will reveal which batch of hardware it belongs to, the original or the modified hardware.

Did Masimo CEO say Apple Watch Blood Oxygen Sensor is Not Reliable, Customers Are ‘Better Off Without It’?

As Apple starts selling Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 models without the blood oxygen sensor enabled, Masimo CEO Joe Kiani confirmed to Bloomberg that there has been no chat with Apple about a possible settlement.

According to Kiani, he has not spoken to anyone from Apple “personally” and no one from Apple has reached out about an agreement.

He did say there have been court-ordered mediations he is unable to discuss, and that there are likely to be additional meetings in the future, but he does not believe those meetings will serve as steps to settling the legal dispute with Apple.

Kiani maligned the Apple Watch blood oxygen sensor, even though it is allegedly using Masimo-patented technology.

“Apple is masquerading what they are offering to consumers as a reliable, medical pulse oximeter, even though it is not,” said Kiani. “I really feel wholeheartedly that consumers are better off without it.”

Apple’s blood oxygen sensor does not have FDA clearance, but Masimo’s W1 watch does. Masimo’s device offers continuous real-time oxygen saturation and pulse rate monitoring, and it can be used as a medical device in hospitals, clinics, and at home. Kiani says that pulse oximetry “is not useful unless it is a continuous monitor.”

Apple has accused Masimo of copying the Apple Watch with the W1, and claims that it infringes on several Apple patents.

Apple has said that Masimo is using litigation to eliminate the Apple Watch from the market to make room for the W1 watch. Kiani says that Apple’s narrative is “false” and that Apple is living in a “fake reality.”

What did Massimo Ceo say in December about apple settlement ?

Back in December, Kiani said that Masimo would be open to a settlement with Apple and would help the Cupertino company “improve their product,” but he said he would want an apology and “honest dialogue” as part of any settlement discussion.

The U.S. International Trade Commission ruled in October that Apple violated Masimo patents with the Apple Watch blood oxygen sensor, and it levied an import ban on the component in December.

Apple was forced to stop selling the Apple Watch for a short period, but sales resumed while the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit considered whether or not to stay the import ban during the appeals process.

The court decided yesterday that the import ban would not be paused while Apple’s appeal is considered, and as of today, Apple is not allowed to sell ‌Apple Watch Series 9‌ or Apple Watch Ultra 2 models with a functional blood oxygen sensor in the United States.

To avoid having to stop sales, Apple opted to sell modified ‌Apple Watch Ultra 2‌ and ‌Apple Watch Series 9‌ models that do not contain pulse oximetry functionality, and those devices are now available for purchase.

These Apple Watches still have a blood oxygen sensor inside, but it is disabled.

As per Bloomberg, the Vision Pro will present two categories of apps for users: those natively developed for Vision Pro and iPad apps that are compatible in a special mode.

However, a recent revelation indicates a notable absence of several popular apps in its initial offering.

As it stands, the majority of the top apps on the App Store, including key players like YouTube and Spotify, will not be natively available for Vision Pro at launch.

On the brighter side, services like Uber and Uber Eats will be accessible on Vision Pro.

The tech world is known for its dynamic nature, and there’s still a window for app developers to change their stance, either by making their iPad apps compatible with Vision Pro or by developing native apps specifically for this new platform.

This decision has been confirmed by a Netflix spokesperson, as reported by TechCrunch.

The web version, while expected to perform similarly to the iPad app, will not support certain features like downloading titles for offline viewing.

Additionally, employees can utilize a $500 credit, available every three years for Mac purchases, towards acquiring Vision Pro.

This could potentially bring the cost down to around $2,100, offering substantial savings.

For customers eager to experience Vision Pro, pre-orders are set to begin on January 19, with sales commencing two weeks later across Apple.com and in all Apple Store locations in the United States.

This launch represents a pivotal moment in tech, showcasing the evolution of app compatibility and corporate incentives in the face of innovative new products.

  • Intuitive control with the iPhone 16’s mechanical Capture Button.
  • Seamless zooming and focusing with touch and pressure sensitivity.
  • Ergonomic button placement enhances video recording experience.
  • iPhone 16 positions itself as a serious contender in mobile videography.

Apple is reportedly going to introduce a ‘Capture Button’ in its upcoming iPhone 16 models.

Initially reported last September and later confirmed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this feature is specifically designed to enhance the video-capturing experience for iPhone users.

Capture Button’s Functionality

Capture Button's Functionality

The Capture Button is mechanical but uniquely responsive to both pressure and touch.

This approach allows users to control various camera functions intuitively.

For example, swiping left or right on the button enables users to smoothly zoom in and out.

A light press on the button will focus the camera, while a more forceful press activates video recording.

iPhone 16 to Reportedly Include a New Capture Button For Easier Videography

Apple is reportedly going for a placement of the Capture Button on the right side of the iPhone, just below the Power button.

This positioning is ideally suited for finger access, particularly when the iPhone is held horizontally – a common orientation for video recording.

Interestingly, this placement necessitates the relocation of the mmWave antenna to the left side of the device, a minor but notable shift in the iPhone’s internal configuration.

iPhone as a Camera Alternative

iPhone as a Camera Alternative

The introduction of the Capture Button is part of Apple’s broader strategy to position the iPhone 16 as a viable alternative to traditional cameras for shooting horizontal video.

Recognizing the growing trend of smartphone photography and videography, Apple aims to equip users with tools that are both sophisticated and user-friendly.

The Capture Button, as per Gurman, is expected to be a major selling point for the iPhone 16 lineup, underlining Apple’s focus on innovation in camera technology.

Latest Rumours
Design Fluidity Future Possibilities

While Apple has not finalized the design of the iPhone 16, the current plans for the Capture Button represent a significant step forward in smartphone design.

The potential for the button’s function and design to evolve further as the development process continues is a testament to Apple’s dynamic approach to technological advancement.

iPhone 16's Capture Button Will Allow Zoom in and out
iPhone 16’s Capture Button Will Allow Zoom in and out

FAQs

What is the Capture Button on the iPhone 16 and how does it work?

The Capture Button on the iPhone 16 is a mechanical button that responds to touch and pressure, allowing users to intuitively control camera functions.

For instance, swiping on the button enables zooming, a light press focuses the camera, and a stronger press starts video recording.

Where will the Capture Button be located on the iPhone 16?

Apple plans to place the Capture Button on the right side of the iPhone 16, just below the Power button.

This strategic placement is ideal for easy access when the phone is held horizontally, which is common for video recording.

How does the Capture Button change the iPhone 16’s internal design?

The introduction of the Capture Button on the iPhone 16 necessitates moving the mmWave antenna to the left side of the device.

This shift is a minor but important change in the phone’s internal configuration to accommodate the new feature.

What is the purpose of the Capture Button in Apple’s strategy for the iPhone 16?

Apple’s introduction of the Capture Button is aimed at making the iPhone 16 a viable alternative to traditional cameras for horizontal video shooting.

It’s part of Apple’s strategy to provide sophisticated and user-friendly tools for smartphone photography and videography.

Gurman: iPhone 16’s Capture Button Will Be Used for Taking Video.Details?

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Capture Button will be able to record video. In this week’s Power On newsletter, Gurman says that the iPhone 16 models will include a “new dedicated button for taking video.”

The Capture Button’s function is, of course, hinted at in the name, but this is the first time we’ve heard confirmation of its purpose.

As we explained in a recent look at early iPhone 16 prototypes, the Capture Button will be located on the bottom right side of the ‌iPhone 16‌.

It will replace the mmWave antenna on U.S. iPhone models, with the mmWave antenna to be relocated to the left side of the device below the volume and Action buttons.

Non-U.S. models do not have a mmWave antenna that needs to be relocated in order to accommodate the Capture Button.

The Capture Button will be a capacitive button with haptic feedback rather than a mechanical button, and it is expected to include a force sensor that can recognize pressure.

The location of the button may make it easy to trigger, but if it is activated via pressure, it could be that holding it down will launch into the camera and allow video recording to start.

The different pressure levels could also open up the camera for either a photo or a video (specifically a spatial video), but that’s just speculation at this point.

The Capture Button is coming to all four ‌iPhone 16‌ models, and with spatial video and the Vision Pro headset, it makes sense for Apple to make video recording quicker and more accessible.

The Vision Pro headset can play 3D spatial videos that can be recorded with the ‌iPhone‌.

Right now, the iPhone 15 Pro and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max can record spatial video using the Wide and Ultra Wide cameras in tandem, with this functionality added in iOS 17.2.

The standard ‌iPhone 16‌ models will feature a new vertical lens arrangement that will allow them to capture spatial video as well, so the feature won’t be limited to the Pro models in the future.

Spatial video can only be viewed on the Vision Pro headset, and it is meant to make users feel immersed in their memories.

iPhone 16 Capture button could be mechanical, with pressure & touch-sensitive surface. Details?

Apple’s iPhone 16 isn’t due to be announced until September 2024, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning.

Everything seems to point to a Capture button existing on at least the iPhone 16 Pro models, but what form it could take is still in question.

According to a report from The Information, two people familiar with iPhone 16 development state the Capture button is mechanical with additional features.

It would be touch-sensitive, so users could swipe to adjust zoom levels, and then a half-press would focus the shot.

Since the button can be depressed, that makes it mechanical, which is different from previous rumors suggesting it would be capacitive with haptics.

A mechanical, touch-sensitive switch could prove interesting if difficult to implement.

Such a button would prove a nightmare for case makers. The touch-sensitive surface likely couldn’t be covered, but it would also need space to allow the half-press function to work.

Apple allegedly is testing the feature across all iPhone 16 models, but the feature may not ship in standard models, if at all. Due to the immense size of Apple’s iPhone manufacturing operation, the final design for the iPhone 16 lineup has either been finalized or soon will be.

What are All the ways to open the Camera app ?

From the Lock Screen, by pressing and holding the Camera icon
From the Lock Screen by swiping left on the screen
From the Control Center, if you have added the Camera button
By telling Siri to take a photo or using a shortcut
From the Home Screen after unlocking the iPhone and navigating to the Camera app location

iPhone 16 camera button will let users zoom in and out by swiping, adjust focus. Details?

A new report from The Information today sheds more light on the rumored capture button for the iPhone 16 lineup.

According to the report, the capture button will be able to respond to both touch and pressure, allowing users to “zoom in and out by swiping left and right on it.”

Apple currently plans to bring the capture to the entire iPhone 16 lineup, the report says. The button is said to be mechanical rather than solid state, so it will actually move when it is pressed. This is similar to the other buttons currently on the iPhone.

Even with the mechanical design, however, the surface of the capture button will respond to touch input, which is what will enable you to zoom in and out. The button will also respond to pressure, the report says.

Users will be able to “bring images into focus by pressing it lightly and activate the shutter by pressing more firmly on the button.”

The report aslo adds that there are “no other planned cosmetic changes that would distinguish the iPhone 16 from the previous model.”

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, however, are rumored to get slightly bigger than their predcessors.

Finally, today’s report says that Apple’s plans to switch to capacitive buttons ton the iPhone 15 were scrapped due to “quality challenges and because the haptic vibrations themselves didn’t meet its standards.”

What stands out is the ability for guest users to bypass the headset’s Optic ID requirement, which typically unlocks the device through iris scanning.

The inclusion of Guest Mode opens up new possibilities for users to introduce their friends and family to immersive 3D movies and experiences, notably from Disney Plus, and to streaming apps like Amazon Prime Video, Paramount Plus, and Peacock.

This approach is a clear indication from Apple that it wants to position the Vision Pro as a versatile entertainment hub, suitable for both individual enjoyment and group entertainment.

Every three years, employees are provided with a $500 credit toward a Mac, and that credit will also be able to be used for the Vision Pro, plus Apple is planning to reimburse employees that purchase the headset for the cost of any prescription lenses that are required.

Pre-orders for the Vision Pro begin tomorrow at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time, with a launch to follow on Friday, February 2.

Apple Highlights Guest and Travel Modes on Vision Pro ?

In a press release outlining entertainment options on the Vision Pro, Apple also briefly highlighted Guest User and Travel Mode features on the headset.

With the Guest User mode, you can let family and friends use your Vision Pro with limited access to certain apps, such as Photos and Safari.

Apple says the primary user’s Apple ID account settings, Optic ID, passcode, passwords, Apple Pay, Persona, and health data will be restricted while the Guest User mode is active.

Guest User mode was discovered last year in the visionOS simulator, part of Apple’s app development tool Xcode. Once the mode is turned on, it will automatically shut off if the headset is not worn within five minutes, the simulator showed.

When turned on via Control Center, Apple says Travel Mode stabilizes visuals on the Vision Pro for users wearing the headset on an airplane.

Travel Mode was first discovered by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year in visionOS beta code, with more details about this feature outlined in our coverage at the time.

In fine print related to Travel Mode, Apple warns that the Vision Pro should obviously not be used while operating a moving vehicle.

The Apple Vision Pro boasts compatibility with over a million iPhone and iPad apps from the App Store, presenting them as mini-windows in the user’s virtual space.

However, developers have the option to opt out of this support, and Netflix has officially chosen to do so. Instead, Netflix users on the Apple Vision Pro are directed to access the service through the Safari web browser.

“Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs,” Netflix told Bloomberg in a statement.
