WhatsApp introduces Code Verify an additional layer of security for web users, get details here

0

WhatsApp in association with Cloudflare, a secure web content delivery service, has announced to introduce Code Verify, an open-source browser extension. The additional security feature will let users verify the authenticity of their WhatsApp client while using the messaging app on the web. Code Verify will run automatically when you use WhatsApp Web (web.whatsapp.com).

Users are advised to download Code Verify and pin it on their toolbar so that they can see the extension and its status. Code Verify will then run automatically when they will use WhatsApp on the web. When the extension is pinned to user’s toolbar and the code for WhatsApp Web is fully validated, the extension will show a checkmark in a green circle on the toolbar to show that the code has been fully validated.

The Meta owned messaging app informed that the Code Verify, will immediately alert users if their version of WhatsApp Web is inauthentic or has been modified. Code Verify has been designed to offer an additional layer of security to message shared by millions of users who use WhatsApp on the web each month. Having an additional layer of security is a huge step forward for online privacy.

Code Verify

How does it work

The Cloudflare enables users to verify that everyone using WhatsApp on the web is accessing the same code.

The Code Verify browser extension brings the same protections that mobile apps have to the web. The Cloudflare scans the Javascript code of the web-based app and ensures it matches the source of truth that has been publicly posted on Cloudflare. In case of any inconsistency, the extension will immediately alert you.

The browser extension will also be automatically updated with a new source of truth so people are continuously assured that the version they’re running is the same version that other WhatsApp users are running when the WhatsApp client itself is updated.

Why it is needed

According to the WhatsApp, the need to have Code Verify was felt for web transparency. There is a protocols in place for mobile phones to ensure that the client you’re downloading is authentic and hasn’t been modified.

“Mobile phones have been a key enabler in the global logistics operations today”

0

Two IIT graduates, Karan Shaha and Vikas Chandrawat, embarked on a mission in 2016 to digitally transform the logistics business in India after working on the ground level and running a transport company. During the three years of running their transport venture, they interacted with over 1,000 transport companies and lorry owners. They faced several challenges when it came to booking trucks for transportation, and the absence of an organized market made matters worse.  They also understood that the huge trust gap in the logistics space had an adverse impact on the business generation abilities of transporters, agents and vehicle owners.

This hands-on experience and the deep insight they gained about the core problems faced by the industry led to the inception of Vahak – an online transport marketplace and networking community of truck owners, transporters and consignors – in 2019. Built on the back of cutting-edge technology, Vahak enables customers to directly connect with trusted transporters and truck owners across India and book trucks, trailers, and loads on shared vehicles etc. Ramesh Kumar Raja caught up with Karan Shaha, Co-founder and CEO of Vahak, to know more about the platform and the services it provides. Excerpts:

How have mobile phones brought about a sort of revolution in the logistics sector?

Mobile phones have been a key enabler in the global logistics operations today. They first transformed visibility by offering round-the-clock connectivity with the vehicle on the move. Today, the smartphone apps have completely changed the way services and processes are run. Turn-by-turn navigation by Google Maps was the next change and now, we have apps like the one offered by Vahak providing end-to-end logistics services and support through mobile phones. There is no need to carry loads of paperwork as documents are digitized and can be easily presented and shared online wherever needed. Transporters as well as the shippers can use their smartphones to find each other, communicate, strike a deal, make payments and do other relevant tasks using the mobile phones with complete visibility of the operations in real-time.

What makes Vahak different from others? How are you making the best use of your mobile app?

Vahak is a one-of-its kind platform in the Indian market. It is a fully technology-driven online road transport marketplace. Our aim is to transform the way logistics operations are run in India by streamlining the services and offering standardization. Vahak enables shippers, transporters and truck owners to interact on the platform, and facilitates booking of trucks, trailers and loads across the country.

Vahak’s speciality is that it not only offers business, but also helps transporters build an online brand for themselves, generate leads, and increase their revenue. It is a user-friendly marketplace where users can quickly make bookings at best prices. Vahak provides access to lakhs of transporters and vehicle owners that are verified. Thus, it eliminates the trust gap which has so far adversely impacted the growth of the logistics market in India.

For instance, it provides access to lakhs of transporters and vehicle owners (verified), and allows them to get qualified leads. The app enables them to build their brand online, and increase revenue by up to 40% by ensuring that the vehicles remain on road for more days compared to the conventional offline business methods. For shippers, Vahak offers the opportunity of building a personal pan-India delivery network by offering access to lakhs of verified transporters. The app can reduce load booking time by up to 90%. There is a safe, secure and transparent bidding process for loads, and the usage of the app is 100% free of commission and fees, making it a unique platform.

How many installs it has accumulated till date and when will you land on Apple’s App Store?

We have accumulated more than 1.2 million installs till now and in the next 6 months, we will launch on the App Store as well.

What is your monetization model and how do you keep updating?

What changes have you observed during the COVID-19 era when mobile was the only ray of hope for all?

Mobile phone and app-based platforms have become the game-changers for the logistics sector in the last two years. During the two waves, business has mostly been conducted online. A platform like Vahak has provided stakeholders with a potent, safe and digital alternative that is driving efficiency and revenue to new highs for users. We witnessed a surge in the onboarding numbers on the platform, and the daily and average user activity. Today, mobile phone-based platforms have eliminated uncertainties to a great extent. One can log on to a platform like Vahak and find loads or transporters online. There is no need to make multiple phone calls or be present in a physical market to do business. The digitization of logistics operations has started and it is going to be the future of the Indian transportation sector now.

What are the current trends you are witnessing in the mobile tech and logistics space?

Mobile tech and digital logistics sectors are both evolving rapidly. One of the biggest trends of the day is integration of AI and data analytics in almost every app-driven business. The online ecosystem gives opportunities for various data touch points. All this data is now being used by AI analytics to further improve the processes. In the logistics sector, analytics is used to monitor vehicles, their performance, fuel efficiency, maintenance needs and so on. The insights generated then enable operators to make better use of their fleets, generate more revenue and deliver greater customer satisfaction.

Another major trend in the logistics sector is the integration of IoT. There are IoT sensors attached to boxes or containers carrying expensive items making possible real-time tracking of the condition of items. For temperature-sensitive items such as fruits, vegetables or even vaccines, IoT sensors can provide real time data on the package condition, temperature, weight and other factors to ensure that there is no spillage during transit.

App based logistics operations as enabled by Vahak and usage of advanced digital technology and smartphone apps are gaining traction significantly. These are some trends which have steadily grown and will become major practices in the years ahead.

Please tell us about the funds that you raised in the recent past and what’s your plan for the next few years.

Microsoft bags top position in 12th edition of Metacritic Annual Game Publisher Rankings

0

Metacritic has released the 12th edition of the annual game publisher rankings. According to the result, with average 87.4 metascore, Microsoft bagged top position followed by Sony, Humble Games, Activision Blizzard, Bethesda Softworks, Capcom, Bandai Namco, Sega, Electronic Arts, and 505 Games in the rankings.

Sega was the top ranker in last rankings by Metacritic. This year it scored 77.6 metascore and stood at 8th position.

Microsoft’s position has improved from sixth in 2020 to first place in the 12th edition of the rankings. This is for the first time a publisher averaged more than 85 metascore. Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2, Age of Empires IV, and Halo Infinite were top games released by Microsoft in 2021.

With 81.3 metascore Sony has also improved its ranking from fourth in last year to second in the latest rankings.

Humble Games (80.9) Activision Blizzard (80.6), Bethesda Softworks (80.2), Bandai Namco (78.5), Electronic Arts (78.3) and 505 Games (75.7) have improved their positions in the ranking while Capcom, with 80.6 metascore noted downfall in the rankings. A total of 43 publishers released five or more games in 2021.

Three of Microsoft’s titles Forza Horizon 5, Psychonauts 2, and the Xbox Series X version of Microsoft Flight Simulator scored more than 90, which is ‘great’. Other titles of the Microsoft were rated good.

Microsoft was followed by Sony with an average Metacritic score of 81.3, with just Destruction AllStars keeping Sony from closing the year with 100 percent “good” games.

Activision Blizzard, surprisingly, finished off the year in the fourth spot, regardless of the continuous controversies, and before being acquired by Xbox.

Despite the fact that Nintendo contained 18 games, it was not able to find place among top ten. It had to satisfy with 14th place in the ranking chart. None of the games of Nintendo was rated ‘great’ although Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and Metroid Dread came close with scores of 89 and 88 individually.

Metacritic ranks publishers based solely on the quality of their 2021 releases. Critic reviews (as captured by each game’s metascore) are used to evaluate performance. Sales and user reviews do not factor into these rankings.

Android 12 devices at risk with this new malware: Check if your device is at risk

0

A highly severe Linux Kernel vulnerability called the “Dirty Pipe” is putting the Android 12 devices such as google pixel 6, Samsung Galaxy S22 and others at risk. The issue is said to be very serious and malicious as it allows certain hostile software and applications to get access to the device’s root level. It can also access and alter the data in files marked as read-only. This vulnerability was first found on the Linux Kernel and is now replicated on Google Pixel 6 by a security researcher.

Dirty Pipe Malware

Google is aware of the presence of this bug and has advised the users to update to the latest update, including the security updates.

What is the dirty pipe vulnerability?

A similar privilege-escalation was found previously named as Dirty Cow, and this is where the name Dirty Pipe has come from. It was discovered and fixed in 2016 only. Now a privilege escalation is when any unauthorised applications or processes get access to a system through exploiting the vulnerability. The word pipe is added to this one as it influences pipes, which are tools used by the Linux system for communication purposes. This one is much more straightforward to exploit than the Dirty Cow.

How it is discovered?

A German security researcher, Max Kellerman, first found the vulnerability after one of his clients raised a support ticket for a corrupt file he found on his system. Since the malware was new, he couldn’t find a reason to explain it and tried to fix the files manually.
During his course of the research, the number of clients increased, facing the same issue with more files on the table. After more and more scanning and analysing the files and client’s hard disk, Kellerman discovered a pattern where he found multiple corrupted files. Finally, he reached an unlikely conclusion that the flaw must be caused by a bug in the Linux Kernel.

“The kernel is an extremely complex project developed by thousands of individuals with methods that may seem chaotic; despite of this, it is extremely stable and reliable. But this time, I was convinced that it must be a kernel bug,” Kellerman notes in a company blog post.

Dirty Pipe vulnerability: What are the consequences?

Max Kernell has admitted that if any device is affected. the bug might get the full root access of the device. This also means that the software could read and alter the Whatsapp contacts and communications (encrypted ones as well), block messages, simulate users on websites that are unauthorized and possess all the installed banking apps to rob money.

Google pixel bug

The researcher, Kellerman was competent enough to duplicate the same bug on Google Pixel 6 and reported the same to his security team in February. Also, after the report, Google also issued a patch to resolve it in the Android Kernel. Well, it’s still not clear whether the March security patch has resolved the issue or not, but we can still rely on it!

Devices prone to “Dirty Pipe” vulnerability

Reportedly, the flaw affects many devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S22 as well as the Google Pixel 6. Additionally, the “Dirty Pipe” is also affecting some other devices which are also running on Android 12. The new ones are also expected to be vulnerable to invasions.

Dirty Pipe Malware

Hence, it is recommended that the users to not to download programmes from untrusted sites and stay away from apps and games that are not trustworthy. Also, make sure that your that your device is up-to-date to avoid any such bug interferences.

Cranking up the heat, Apple claims to beat Nvidia’s giant RTX 3090 graphics

0

After introducing M1 Pro and M1 Max, the next breakthrough chips for the Mac in October 2021, Apple has claimed to further intensify the competition in the graphics processing units (GPU) with the launch of with its new M1 Ultra.

The US-based tech giant Apple claims that it will give tough competition to Nvidia’s giant RTX 3090 graphics card, the fastest GPU available right now.

A 64-core GPU — 8x the size of M1, the M1 Ultra ensures faster delivery of performance for the most graphics-intensive needs, such as 3D rendering and complex image processing.

What is GPU

It is a specialized processor originally designed to accelerate graphics rendering. Gradually, GPU has become more flexible and programmable, improving their capabilities. This made graphics programmers or designers to use with advanced lighting and shadowing techniques to create more interesting visual effects and realistic scenes.

Coming back to Apple and Nvidia, the M1 Ultra dubbed as the world’s most powerful chip for a personal computer, has a combination of two M1 Max dies, they have been clubbed together to create a single powerful chip, M1 Ultra chip that has double the CPU cores, double the memory, double the memory bandwidth, and most importantly, double the GPU cores. M1 Ultra is available in the all-new Mac Studio, it brings unprecedented performance to the desktop. Apple has described this combination as ultrafusion and is ahead of its rivals like Intel, Samsung, and Qualcomm who are in the early stages of working together on a new standard that could let companies build processors out of Lego-like chiplets.

Huge bandwidth jump

With the help of a silicon interposer that connects the chips across more than 10,000 signals, providing a massive 2.5TB/s of low latency, inter-processor bandwidth — more than 4x the bandwidth of the leading multi-chip interconnect technology. This enables M1 Ultra to behave and be recognised by software as one chip, so developers don’t need to rewrite code to take advantage of its performance.  While, Nvidia offers with NVLink for SLI or AMD with Infinity Fabric, which are used as high-speed links between GPUs.

RTX 3090

With its RTX 30-series, Nvidia has practically killed off multi-GPU support as only the RTX 3090 offerS NVLink support. It has been observed that combining two RTX 3090s together for productivity or gaming rigs has hugely mixed results, though. Games that natively support SLI will offer performance benefits, while most will not offer any uplift and some will even see a performance drop.

The RTX 3090 is the fastest GPU on the market right now — until Nvidia finally delivers its delayed RTX 3090 Ti — and Apple claims the M1 Ultra can beat a single RTX 3090 while using 200 watts less of power.

Apple claims to deliver faster performance through M1 Ultra with a 64-core GPU as compared to highest-end PC GPU available while using 200 fewer watts of power.

However, similar claim was made by Apple about its M1 Max. It said that it can beat the RTX 3080, but the actual results were mixed.

When it comes to productivity-focused loads, the M1 Max turned out to be extremely well as compared to the RTX 3080.

Thanks to the M1 Ultra that has made Mac Studio incredibly powerful. Mac Studio is designed to replace the 27-inch iMac and even Mac Pro models for many.

With its M1 Ultra and Mac Studio, Apple id focuses on productivity applications rather than gaming.

Both the M1 Pro and M1 Max did not perform well in gaming reviews. Infact, they were found to be similar to an RTX 3060 in many titles. Experts believe that the M1 Ultra is not going to magically solve the lack of macOS games, or that most cross-platform games are still x86.

iPhone SE alternative from the house of Sony: Know what Xperia Ace 3 has in common

0

Even though Sony phones are a thing of the past in India now, they still make news outside their home country (Japan) whenever there’s any development with regard to any new offering. In one such development, the Japanese electronics major is coming up with the Sony Xperia Ace 3, which is said to have an iPhone SE-like compact design.

It must be noted that Android camp is not too interested in launching small smartphones, and the Sony Xperia ACE 3 might come as a surprise from the Japanese company that it still is a big advocate of the compact form factor.

The upcoming Sony Xperia Ace 3 is somewhat akin to Apple iPhone SE 2022 and iPhone 13 Mini that come with small displays and sell like hot cakes despite having old-style design. Although, it’s not a new thing for Sony as it has been making Xperia Ace lineup of compact devices since 2019.

Sony Xperia Ace 3-1

As per images revealed by popular tech leaker OnLeaks (via Zollege), the upcoming Sony Xperia phone almost looks like its compact predecessor launched in 2020, especially in terms of design and overall size. It happens to have a slightly smaller footprint, if the renders are to be believed.

Interestingly, the upcoming Xperia Ace 3 (with 9.1mm) is said to be a little thicker than its predecessor (with 8.9mm), however this minute change in dimensions doesn’t disturb the display size of 5.5-inch, which is a tried and tested endeavor from the house of Sony.

In terms of the rear panel, the leaked renders show that the Sony Xperia ACE 3 comes with a clean design, possessing a small camera module – housing a 13-megapixel shooter and an LED flash – at the top left and the company’s branding at the centre.

Up front, it comes with a selfie camera housed within the waterdrop notch. Although the details about the sensor used here is still unknown, it’s likely to be the same 8-megapixel lens that’s available on Xperia Ace 2.

The rest of the design is said to be borrowed from the Xperia Ace 2. The smartphone sports a SIM tray on the left side and the power button and the volume rocker on the right. Going by the trend, the power button also doubles up as a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. At the top and bottom, the handset comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB-C port, a speaker grille and a microphone.

If reports are to be believed, the smartphone is likely to come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G SoC paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB of internal storage. It will be backed by a 4,500mAh battery. The forthcoming smartphone will reportedly cost $327 (Rs 24,999) and is expected to land sometime in June this year in Japan.
