iPhone 15 Pro Max Reigns Supreme in Q1 2024 Smartphone Sales: Counterpoint

Highlights

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max is the top-selling smartphone globally in Q1 2024.
  • Outperforms Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, which ranks fifth.
  • Pro models now generate over 60% of Apple’s smartphone revenue.
  • Despite a decline in overall iPhone sales, high-end models see increased demand.

Already a unanimous victory of consumers over affordable products, Apple’s flagship iPhone 15 Pro Max has become the most successful smartphone model in the world in the first quarter of 2024, according to the latest data from the research firm Counterpoint.

This has seen the Cupertino giant outdo its cut-throat competitor Samsung and its flagship Galaxy S24 series.

Despite a decline in overall iPhone sales, high-end models see increased demand
Despite a decline in overall iPhone sales, high-end models see increased demand

Commenting on the near-term outlook, Research Director Tarun Pathak said, “Growth is expected to be slow but steady in the near term. However, revenues are expected to grow faster as the ongoing premiumization trend is likely to persist, especially with the rise of newer form factors and capabilities such as foldables and GenAI.

More than 10 OEMs have launched over 30 GenAI-capable smartphones so far. We estimate that GenAI’s share of overall smartphone shipments will reach 11% by 2024.”

Commenting on Apple’s performance, Research Director Jeff Fieldhack said, “Tough competition in China, record low upgrades in the US and a difficult compare from last year due to iPhone 14 Pro’s supply shifting to Q1 2023 all weighed on iPhone performance.

However, there were upsides as well. An improved product mix with 15 Pro’s performing better than its predecessors, and an increasing footprint in emerging markets, helped Apple in arresting some of the declines. Emerging markets especially provide long term growth opportunities. We also expect the inclusion of GenAI later this year to contribute to iPhone upgrades.”

Commenting on overall market dynamics, Senior Analyst Prachir Singh said, “Smartphone shipments grew during the first quarter as emerging markets continued their strong momentum, while Europe, especially Central and Eastern Europe, grew the most compared to a difficult Q1 2023.

Consumer demand in these markets has been growing gradually and the inventory levels have improved. MEA was the fastest growing region due to the strong shipments of TECNO, Xiaomi and HONOR. China also grew YoY owing to strong Lunar New Year sales and Huawei’s comeback.

The India market also saw growth thanks to exiting 2023 with healthy inventory levels. The mature markets of North America and Japan declined relative to the same period in 2023.”

iPhone 15 Series Tops the List

According to Counterpoint’s global smartphone shipment report for the first quarter of 2024, the iPhone 15 Pro Max topped the list, beating even Apple’s own iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and last year’s iPhone 14 models.

Samsung’s current premium offering, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, had to settle for fifth place on the chart.

Making up the top ten were the iPhone 15 Plus at number eight, with Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and mid-range A34 securing the final two spots.

This leaderboard has shown us a very notable trend – consumers are increasingly gravitating towards high-end, flagship smartphone experiences.

iPhone Pro Max Sales Surprising

Pro models now generate over 60% of Apple’s smartphone revenue

For the first time in history—excluding sales seasons—Counterpoint is estimating that Pro model iPhones now command over 60% of Apple’s smartphone revenue, which was only 24% in Q1 2020.

This trend fits entirely with earlier reports from January that told the world that Apple had bested Samsung in overall smartphone sales for all of 2023—a testament to the continued appeal of the iPhone.

Yet, not everything was hunky-dory for Apple in Q1 2024.

iPhone 15 Pro Max is the top-selling smartphone globally in Q1 2024

While the premium iPhone segment was bright, overall iPhone sales fell 10% year-over-year.

Despite this, the company managed to lessen the sting with very high growth in services revenue.

Apple also struggled in the important Chinese market where iPhone shipments dipped below Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi.

But a Q1 2024’s stellar success of the iPhone 15 Pro Max affirms Apple’s continued dominance in the premium smartphone market and the consumer’s willingness to pay for the latest mobile experiences.

How does the iPhone 15 Pro Max compare to other models from Apple and competitors?

The iPhone 15 Pro Max outshone other models including Apple’s iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra in global sales.

What is the revenue contribution of Pro model iPhones in 2024?

As of Q1 2024, iPhone Pro models contribute over 60% to Apple’s total smartphone revenue, showing significant growth from 24% in Q1 2020.

How did Apple perform in the smartphone market overall in the first quarter of 2024?

Despite leading with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, overall iPhone sales fell by 10% year-over-year, though service revenue growth helped mitigate this decline.

Did Apple face challenges in any major markets in Q1 2024?

In Q1 2024, Apple experienced a drop in iPhone shipments in China, falling behind Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi in that market.

Is iPhone 15 Pro Max Best-selling Smartphone in Q1 2024?

Apple and Samsung dominated the list of top 10 best-selling smartphones in Q1 2024.
This was the first quarter in which the top 10 smartphones were all 5G capable.

This was also Apple’s first non-seasonal quarter when the iPhone Pro Max took the top spot.

The Pro line-up captured half of Apple’s total sales in Q1 2024, a significant increase from 24% in Q1 2020.

Apple and Samsung dominated the top-10 best-selling smartphones list for Q1 2024, each capturing five positions and leaving no spot for other brands, according to Counterpoint Research’s Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker.

This was the first quarter in which the top 10 smartphones were all 5G capable. Besides, the trend towards premiumization was evident, with 7 of the top 10 smartphones being premium (wholesale price at $600 and above).

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max was the best-selling smartphone of Q1 2024. Notably, the Pro Max variant achieved the top position for the first time in Apple’s non-seasonal quarter, reflecting an increasing trend of consumer preference for high-end smartphones.

All four iPhone 15 variants and the iPhone 14 were among the top 10 bestsellers. Further, the iPhone 15 line-up secured the top three spots.

The growing popularity of the Apple Pro line-up was evident, as it captured half of Apple’s total sales in Q1 2024, a significant increase from 24% in Q1 2020.

The Pro iPhones have become the major revenue drivers for Apple, contributing over 60% of its sales value in Q1 2024. The Pro line-up offers substantial upgrades and significant enhancements over the base models.

This strategic move has proven successful, as consumers are willing to pay for premium features. The Pro line-up’s features include an innovative dynamic island interface, more advanced chipsets, ultra-smooth displays, titanium chassis and a telephoto camera.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max performed well despite its first price increase since the launch of the Pro series in 2019, indicating a strong consumer desire for the extra features the Pro line offers.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series secured two spots in the top 10 for Q1 2024, with its Ultra variant ranking fifth and the base variant coming in ninth.

The strong performance of the S24 series can be attributed to Samsung’s early refresh of the series, and its efforts in generative AI (GenAI) technology.

The S24 series was the first to reach the market with GenAI features and capabilities, allowing users to create unique content and experience a new level of interaction with their smartphones.

Consumers are holding onto their smartphones for longer periods because upgrades are offering limited differentiation in features.

This leads consumers to opt for high-end smartphones to ensure their devices remain technologically relevant for a longer duration.

Going forward, we expect the top 10 best-selling smartphones to capture a larger share of total smartphone sales as OEMs are focusing on leaner portfolios with premium features, including GenAI.

  • Apple plans to enter the foldable device market with MacBook-iPad hybrids and iPhones.
  • Mass production of the hybrid device is set to begin in late 2025, with a foldable iPhone following in 2026.
  • Analysts confirm Apple’s development of a 20.5-inch foldable notebook planned for 2027.
  • Insider reports suggest a new dual-screen design combining iPad and MacBook features.

Although folding smartphones have been making waves in the Android world for some time now, Apple has been noticeably absent from this rising niche.

But that could change sooner than you think, according to a series of investor reports.

A new note from the analyst Jeff Pu, recently claimed that Apple was already planning a first foldable offering in the shape of an odd-duck MacBook-iPad hybrid device.

Pu wrote that this foldable MacBook-iPad is already set for mass production to begin in late 2025.

But that was not the only report about Apple’s foldable ambitions.

According to the same note, Apple is also readying a foldable iPhone model for late 2026.

Pu wrote that these foldables will be presented as Apple’s high-end premium product offerings.

The latest leak confirms some of the earlier predictions of respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has told investors that the Cupertino tech giant was indeed in the process of developing a massive 20.5-inch foldable notebook that will be released next year, in 2027.

Display expert Ross Young has already gone on record in the past to say that such a large foldable hybrid device from Apple was indeed in the works before 2027.

This has already been backed by the insider, Mark Gurman, who previously revealed that the company has been researching an altogether new dual-screen foldable design that seeks to bring both iPad and MacBook functionality into one, unified package.

Apple’s Foldable Future Still Doubtful

While it’s yet to be seen just what such a device might look like, the rumours certainly do go a long way toward making an exciting case for Apple getting foldable, at last, in the years to come.

Coming at the time when the company’s set to reveal its latest line of regular iPads at its “Let Loose” event on May 7th, for example, its ambitious foldable future may soon begin taking shape.

  • OnePlus Open 2 to feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for top-tier performance.
  • Enhanced photography with Hasselblad collaboration and new Sony sensor.
  • Design improvements include a smoother hinge and better water resistance.
  • Expected to launch in September priced around £1,500 ($1,800).

After making waves with its inaugural foldable offering last year, OnePlus is readying its next volley in the blossoming foldable market.

While official details remain tightly under wraps, whispers have started circulating about the forthcoming OnePlus Open 2.

Let’s delve into the fortifying rumours and examine what could be in store.

Processor and Cameras

OnePlus Open 2 to feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for top-tier performance

The heart of Open 2 is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which is expected to deliver beefy performance with enhanced efficiency.

This should help the device boast an 8-inch foldable display, where rumours are in that direction.

Possibilities include retaining the size of its predecessor, with possible increases in refresh rates and brightness.

In photography, the collaboration may be deepened further with the already-renowned optics mavens, Hasselblad.

What might be witnessed includes further improvements in image processing, color science improvements, and a new Sony sensor, among other things.

Looking forward, we may see improvements in battery technology, with advanced capacities and quicker charging speeds projected as probable advancements.

Design and Software

Enhanced photography with Hasselblad collaboration and new Sony sensor

Design-wise, OnePlus is expected to stay on top of things with perhaps even more refinement.

A smoother, barely noticeable crease may be in order, thanks to an optimised hinge mechanism.

The company may also consider increased durability with a more robust construction, and perhaps a better water-resistant certification.

Regarding software, the Open 2 is likely to launch running the latest Android 14 platform, with OnePlus’ OxygenOS on top.

Multitasking optimisations tailored to the foldable form factor may be in the spotlight.

Expected Pricing and Availability

OnePlus Open
Expected to launch in September priced around £1,500 ($1,800)

Industry sources have told PocketWatch to expect a September launch and to finally have the OnePlus Open 2 in the market to get a head start before the next Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 release.

Such radical hardware will, of course, command a premium, with OnePlus aiming to slightly undercut rivals.

Expectations currently orbit the £1,500 ($1,800) mark, an affordable flagship foldable of yore.

Of course, such radical hardware is going to command a premium, though OnePlus may aim to slightly undercut rivals.

Price projections currently orbit the £1,500 ($1,800) mark, mirroring the original Open’s positioning as an affordable flagship foldable.

In India expect the Open 2 to keep the above Rs 1,30,000 mark alive.

OnePlus Open 2: Challenging the Norm?

OnePlus Open: Foldable Smartphone
Design improvements include a smoother hinge and better water resistance.

While the foldable arena is rapidly maturing, with Samsung retaining a commanding presence and ascending brands like Oppo also jostling for attention, the OnePlus Open 2 shapes up as a tempting proposition.

By fusing boundary-pushing innovation with pragmatic refinements and an accessible price point, OnePlus could well have another hit on its hands.

As the launch inches closer, the excitement will only intensify.

OnePlus 13 Leaked Renders Reveal New Camera Design and Specs

0
OnePlus 13 Leaked Renders Reveal New Camera Design and Specs

Highlights

  • New squircle-shaped camera island replaces the traditional circular module.
  • Features triple camera setup with Hasselblad branding for enhanced capabilities.
  • Expected to include a 6.8-inch 2K OLED LTPO display and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.
  • Design changes include slightly curved edges and a relocated OnePlus logo.

There are some new leaked renders currently on the market that suggest that OnePlus may change the design for its next flagship smartphone—the OnePlus 13.

These renders suggest a change from the usual circular/oval-shaped camera module designs of OnePlus.

Instead of the usual camera hump, the leaked render of the alleged OnePlus 13 reveals a rectangular/squircle-shaped camera island on the back of the phone.

That is quite contrary to the expectations and leakage of the design of the phone.

OnePlus 13 Render: What’s Changed?

The rectangular camera module is home to a triple camera setup and a ring-shaped LED flash.

In the middle is a Hasselblad branding which means improved camera capabilities, although it was rumoured earlier that OnePlus was moving away from this collaboration.

The right side frame sports the power and volume buttons, the left probably housing OnePlus’ signature alert slider switch.

The edges appear to be slightly curved compared to previous OnePlus designs.

There are four holes on the camera island, but three probably are camera holes with only one being for the LED flash.

The absence of OnePlus’ logo on the back suggests this may be just an early design prototype.

Features triple camera setup with Hasselblad branding for enhanced capabilities

A leak from an earlier source showed a vertical camera bump with a larger protruding lens surrounded by a green ring on the OnePlus 13, but this newest leak shows a smaller protruding lens.

Speculated specs include a 6.8-inch 2K OLED LTPO display, in-display fingerprint scanner, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset.

Still, these details from leaked information should be taken lightly with caution because they are based on unconfirmed sources and may be changed before the official release.

  • iPad Pro rumoured to feature an M4 chip, enhancing AI and performance capabilities.

Apple’s upcoming ‘Let Loose’ event focused on iPads will happen on May 7, 2024.

Unlike Apple’s traditional live launch events, it’s a pre-recorded video presentation—like the ‘Spooky Fast’ MacBook event last year.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the ‘Let Loose’ video runtime will be about 35 minutes long.

That’s a short event.

But it’s not the shortest.

While many might assume 35 minutes is relatively snappy, it’s not the shortest Apple event ever as the title for that goes to Apple’s October 2023 MacBook event, which clocked in at 32 minutes.

Let Loose: What to Expect

Apple’s Let Loose Event to Showcase New iPads in a Concise 35-Minute Presentation

So, what might be witnessed in these 35 minutes?

Indeed, there will be the release of the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models during the event.

And that’s not all, we can expect new generations of the Magic Keyboard andApple Pencil accessories.

The rumours go so far as to say that the Apple Pencil will get a new squeeze gesture with haptic feedback.

A prototype of the iPad Pro is expected to flaunt the upgrade on Apple’s M4 chip, which would indeed showcase how powerful the company is in on-device AI capabilities, in addition to performance uplifts.

Updates to include new Magic Keyboard and enhanced Apple Pencil with haptic feedback

Apart from the Pro models, an updated iPad Air powered by the M2 chip is likely to be seen.

There are also rumours of a larger 12.9-inch display option for the iPad Air.

A redesigned Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro with an aluminium build, bigger trackpad, and other design changes are also expected.

Gurman’s ‘Power On’ newsletter has been a key source of information about the event, stating that the online ‘Let Loose’ stream will go live at 7:30 PM IST on May 7.

FAQs

iPhone 17 Series Promises Major Upgrades with New Design and Advanced AI

Highlights

  • iPhone 17 series to introduce a fresh industrial design and enhanced AI processing.
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max to feature titanium build and smaller Dynamic Island.
  • New ‘iPhone 17 Slim’ to replace the current iPhone Plus model.
  • Pro models may include a 48MP Periscope lens, significantly upgrading camera capabilities.

According to analyst Jeff Pu from Haitong Intl Tech Research, the iPhone 17 lineup is likely to be a mega-upgrade cycle for Apple, thanks to a few big changes:

  • New Design: The iPhone 17 series is likely to have a new industrial design.
  • AI Processing: The iPhones are likely to have enhanced AI processing capabilities.
  • iPhone 17 Slim: Apple is likely to replace the current iPhone Plus model with a new slimmer “iPhone 17 Slim” model.

Pu predicts the display sizes will be as follows: the iPhone 17 will have a 6.1-inch display, the iPhone 17 Slim will have a 6.6-inch display, the iPhone 17 Pro will have a 6.3-inch display, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a 6.9-inch display.

iPhone 17 Series Promises Major Upgrades with New Design and Advanced AI

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumoured to use a titanium chassis and feature a smaller “narrowed Dynamic Island” cutout enabled by a new “metalens” proximity sensor technology.

The other models will retain the current design.

The Pro Max will also showcase a reduced-size Dynamic Island, made possible by metalens technology that minimizes the proximity sensor’s space requirements.

This same technology may also be employed to compact the Face ID sensor in the top-tier 2025 iPhone model.

Pro models may include a 48MP Periscope lens, significantly upgrading camera capabilities
Pro models may include a 48MP Periscope lens, significantly upgrading camera capabilities

Moreover, both the Pro models will potentially feature a Periscope 48MP 1G+3P lens, a substantial enhancement over the anticipated Periscope 12MP 1G+3P lens in the iPhone 16.

This is in contrast to the iPhone 15 series, where the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have 6GB of RAM, and the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have 8GB.

Analysts have a habit of getting some of their facts wrong.

Most recently it happened to Ming-Chi Kuo and then also to analyst Mark Gurman.

The iPhone 17 is more than 18 months away so expectations need to be kept in check and any information needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

The global variant of the X Fold 3 Pro has the model number V2330.

On Geekbench 6, it scored 2146 points in the single-core test and 6304 points in the multi-core test.

That’s pretty impressive for a foldable phone and is just ahead of Samsung’s Z Fold5 although the latter is nearly one year old.

The listing shows the phone has an octa-core processor with a 1+3+2+2 core configuration, up to 3.3GHz peak speed, a codename “pineapple”, and an Adreno 750 GPU.

It will have 16GB RAM and run Android 14 with Vivo’s FunTouchOS skin on top.

This is inline with the specs revealed across the phone’s China launch.

Last week, the X Fold 3 Pro appeared on India’s BIS certification database, hinting at an India launch.

However, Vivo hasn’t officially announced a global release for the X Fold 3 series yet.
