Smartphone Vision Syndrome: Cellphone Addiction: 30year old Hyderabad Woman Lost Vision Temporarily Due to Excessive Phone Usage In Dark

Highlights

  • A 30-year-old lady from Hyderabad suffered lost her vision due to excessive use of her phone.
  • The doctor suspected that she was suffering from smartphone vision syndrome.
  • The woman lost her vision for over a year but has now recovered.

Our everyday routines have a significant impact on our health. If a tiny addiction is not promptly overcome, it might have devastating effects on our physical health. Dr. Sudhir Kumar of Hyderabad recently shared a Twitter thread that may be a little frightening, but it is an eye opener for the general public in this digital era where technology has reached every nook and cranny of our environment.

In his Twitter thread, Dr. Sudhir detailed how a young woman’s vision was seriously damaged as a result of routine behaviour. Manju, 30, was diagnosed with blindness after spending a lot of time on her phone in the dark for around one and a half years, according to the doctor.

The symptoms, according to the doctor, were seeing floaters, intense flashes of light, dark zigzag patterns, and occasionally a lack of vision or concentration on objects.

Dr Sudhir Kumar, who goes by the username @hyderabaddoctor, said that his patient was diagnosed with blindness after using her smartphone frequently in the dark for roughly 1.5 years. The doctor listed floaters, dark zigzag patterns, bright flashes of light, and occasionally trouble focusing on or seeing specific objects as the symptoms.

The doctor described the instances where she occasionally experienced brief periods of vision loss. This mostly happened when she got up at night to use the restroom. She underwent a thorough evaluation by an eye specialist, and the results were normal.

After reviewing her medical history, the doctor discovered that she had developed a new habit of using her smartphone for several hours every day, including for a number of hours at night while the lights were out.

According to the doctor, she was diagnosed with smartphone vision syndrome (SVS). The doctor claimed he didn’t request any tests or write any prescriptions. Instead, he advised her on the potential causes of her eyesight impairment and to use her smartphone less.

At the one-month checkup, the doctor discovered that his patient was in perfect health and that her 18-month eyesight impairment was no longer present. Additionally, she no longer experienced a brief loss of eyesight at night.

How to Protect your Eyes while Using Smartphones?

Smartphone Vision Syndrome

The doctor dropped a piece of advice for smartphone users: the 20-20-20 rule. According to the doctor, one must take 20-second break in every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away while using a digital screen.

What is Smartphone Vision Syndrome?

Smartphone Vision Syndrome

Smartphone vision syndrome is a collection of eye and vision issues brought on by close work while using a digital screen. Given that students in schools and colleges and anyone else who spends more time in front of a screen than usual, it has become one of the growing well-being concerns linked to innovation.

A study, published in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, showed that students who take online classes are more likely to develop smartphone vision syndrome because their research revealed a link between digital vision syndrome (DVS) and the risk factors related to the length of exposure, proximity to the screen, and size of the screen being used.

Precautions to Protect your Eyes

Smartphone Vision Syndrome

Blink often to refresh your eyes: Many people blink less than usual when working at a computer, which can contribute to dry eyes. Blinking produces tears that moisten and refresh your eyes. Try to make it a habit to blink more often when looking at a monitor.

Adjust the lighting: When watching television or working on a laptop, it may be easier on your eyes if you keep the room softly lit. Bright lighting and too much glare can strain your eyes and make it difficult to see objects on your screen.

Enlarge the font for easier reading: Adjust the contrast and brightness to a comfortable level. Adjust your screen settings.

Limit screen time: This is especially important for children, who may not make the connection between extended viewing, eyestrain and the need to rest their eyes regularly.

Adjust your monitor: Position your monitor directly in front of you about an arm’s length away so that the screen’s top is at or below eye level. It also helps to have a chair you can adjust.

Use a document holder: If you need to refer to print material while you work on your computer, place it on a document holder. Some holders are designed to be placed between the keyboard and the monitor; others are set to the side. Find one that works for you. The goal is to reduce how much your eyes need to readjust and how often you turn your neck and head.

Improve the air quality of your space: Some changes that may help prevent dry eyes include using a humidifier, adjusting the thermostat to reduce blowing air and avoiding smoke.

FAQ’s on Smartphones Vision Syndrome/ Phone Addiction & How to Overcome it

1) What is Smartphone Phone Syndrome ?

Ans) Smartphone vision disorder is a complex of eye and vision-related problems associated with close work during digital screen use. It is one of the rising well-being concerns identified with (phones and tablets) because of constant and prolonged use of screens.

2) What are Some major signs and symptoms of smartphone addiction ?

Ans) Some major signs and symptoms of smartphone addiction include:

* Tolerance.
* Withdrawal.
* Failed attempts to cut back on smartphone use.
* Loses track of time when using mobile phone.
* Uses cell phone in order to deal with unwanted emotions.
* Text neck.
* Digital eye strain.

3) How to Help a Loved One with a Smartphone Addiction?

Ans) If you’ve been upset or frustrated by your loved one’s excessive phone use while in your presence, you are not alone.
Your loved one may suffer from a cell phone addiction or nomophobia, the fear of being without a mobile phone, if he or she exhibits these signs or symptoms:
* Appears anxious when phone battery is low.
* Panics if cell phone is misplaced or service is unavailable.
* Spends more time connecting online than connecting with people in real life.
* Sleeps with the smartphone on or under the pillow.
* Uses the phone in dangerous situations such as driving.
* Has his or her smartphone on the table during meals.
* Believes the cell phone to have rung or vibrated when it hasn’t.

4) What is the Dopamine Connection with Smartphone Addiction ?

Ans) The Dopamine Connection

And there’s another similarity between behavioral addiction and cell phone overuse: the triggering of a chemical in the brain that reinforces the compulsive behavior. Your brain contains several pathways that transmit a feel-good chemical called dopamine when you’re in rewarding situations. For many people, social interaction stimulates the release of dopamine.

Because so many people use their phones as tools of social interaction, they become accustomed to constantly checking them for that hit of dopamine that’s released when they connect with others on social media or some other app.

App programmers are counting on your data to keep you checking your phone. Some apps even withhold and release social reinforcements, such as “likes” and “comments,” so we receive them in an unpredictable pattern. When we can’t predict the pattern, we check our phones more often.

That cycle can lead to a tipping point: when your phone ceases to be something you enjoy and becomes something you’re virtually compelled to use.

5) What is Dark Mode?

Ans) Dark mode is also known as dark theme. The setting is available on many smartphone models. The default setting on most devices is to show black text on a white background.

Switching your device to dark mode means that it will display white text on a dark background. Dark mode is accessed via your phone’s display settings. It can be switched on and off to your preferences.

When applied, dark mode is set across the entire user interface. This includes apps.
If you cannot find the dark mode option, this feature may have a different name on your phone. Or, your model is outdated and does not offer dark mode.

6) Is Dark Mode Better For Your Eyes?

Ans) Using dark themes may be better for your eyes. But first, we need to consider the way blue light affects your eyes. Blue light waves come from your devices’ screens. These waves provide more energy than other colors of light. They send our brains the signal that it is daytime.

We are only beginning to understand the side effects of excessive blue light. However, we have learned that blue light may confuse our eyes. Some people who promote dark themes claim that using them before bedtime helps them fall asleep more quickly. Some also say that it helps them stay asleep for longer.

This may be because default screen settings expose you to more blue light after dark. This affects your circadian rhythm and suppresses melatonin. This is the hormone that tells your body it is bedtime.

Dark mode may also be easier to read. This is especially when you are in a room with the lights off. The reduction in blue light may also reduce any squinting or eye strain linked to excessive brightness.

However, these theories about blue light and eyes are not backed by research. They are neither supported by professional opinion. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) states that digital eye strain occurs from how we use our devices. Eye strain is not necessarily linked to the blue light that comes from our phones.

7) What are Disadvantages of Dark Mode?

Ans) There are also some disadvantages of dark mode:
* Not always better for eye strain. Light against dark is not always beneficial for eye strain. Content may appear washed out, increasing eye fatigue.
* Difficult to read. Dark modes can be challenging to read, especially in well-lit, sunny rooms.
* May not save battery power. A dark theme will not save your battery on devices with older LCD screens. OLED screens are designed to reserve your battery life in dark mode.

Realme GT 3 India Launch with 240W fast charging support: Specifications Revealed

0
Realme GT 3

Highlights

* Realme has teased the upcoming Realme GT 3 on Twitter.
* Realme GT 3 will likely come with 240W fast charging support.
* Realme GT 3 could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8-series chipset.

Chinese smartphone maker Realme is planning to launch the Realme GT 3 in India besides their Realme GT Neo 5 in China.

Ahead of that, the company has teased the Realme GT 3 India launch on Twitter but there is no launch date for the smartphone yet. The tweet says #SpeedToTheMax, this might suggest the GT 3 will boast super-fast charging, like the GT Neo 5.

Realme GT 3

The company is gearing up to announce the Realme GT Neo 5 in China on February 9 and it is then expected to come to global regions.

The 5G phone will likely arrive in India as well because this is one of the key markets for the brand and the company has also unveiled several Realme GT series phones in the country.

The Realme GT 3 will be the successor of the Realme GT 2, which was launched in India at Rs 34,999 in the first half of 2022. The upcoming smartphone is said to come with 240W fast charging support, which we will also see in the Realme GT Neo 5.

Let us take a closer look at other details of the upcoming smartphone.

The official teaser does not yet refer to the date. However, it can be anticipated that the brand will release the product or the Indian consumers in the upcoming weeks. The Realme GT 3 might be launched in India by the end of February. The retail box of the GT 3 has been spotted online, which shows that the device will come with support for 240W fast charging tech.

The image of the box has been shared by @OnLeaks.

Realme GT 3 Specifications (Expected)

Realme GT 3

The company has not revealed any features or specifications about the upcoming smartphone.
Still, the smartphone will support 240W SuperVOOC charging, according to a recent retail box image shared by tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka OnLeaks).

The Realme GT Neo 5, which is set to make its debut in China this month, is the other Realme phone that supports 240W fast charging. Similar to the Realme GT Neo 5, reports claim the Realme GT 3 will also be available in 150W and 240W charging variants.
There is a possibility that the Realme GT 3 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8-series chipset. However, there is no official confirmation about the chipset.

The teasers of the GT Neo 5 show that the device will have a purple LED light at the back, which will remind one of the Nothing Phone (1) because of the LED strips it has on the back panel.

However, the Realme phone seems to have only one LED strip and this is placed in the huge back camera module. It is unknown why the company has placed it separately instead of around the camera island, which is something that we have seen on some of the old Android phones from different brands.

The purpose is also not clear at the moment. It could either be for show or the company might have added it for notification alerts.
The teasers reveal that the Realme GT Neo 5 will be made available in a unique purple colour option with a matt finish when it launches on February 9. The device doesn’t seem to have a slim profile and features a curved rear panel with AG Glass technology.

There is a triple camera setup at the back of the smartphone.
The teasers have revealed that the new Realme phone will pack a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset under the hood. The rear camera setup includes a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 sensor, which will have support for OIS too for less shaky videos.

It is unknown whether Realme will provide a fast charger in the box or not. So far, the brand hasn’t yet dropped it from its retail boxes. The Realme GT Neo 5 will have support for 240W charging, which will likely help top up the battery in no time.

The leaks claim that the company is planning to unveil two models. One of them will reportedly come with a 5,000mAh battery with 150W fast charging. The second variant will have support for 240W charging and feature a smaller 4,500mAh battery. This is something that Realme did with its older GT phone as well, to give customers both options.

The price of the higher-watt charger will likely be more than the 150W model.

It is said that the upcoming smartphone will be launched as a budget flagship offering by the company.

In the meantime, the company is set to launch the Coca-Cola edition of the recently launched smartphone – Realme 10 Pro 5G – for Indian consumers on February 10th.

Sundar Pichai’s Google Bard: What is Google’s New AI Bard Chatbot ? How to access it ? Microsoft’s Chat GPT Vs Google’s Bard

0

Highlights

* Google’s Bard is a new chatbot tool designed to compete with ChatGPT.
* Bard will be available to the general public in the coming weeks.
* Bard is powered by LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications).
* Google aims to compete with ChatGPT by unveiling Bard.
* Google Bard is only available to few selected users.
* It is expected that in future, the AI chatbot will be integrated in Search.

ChatGPT, which took the internet by storm as a popular Al writing tool clocking over 100 million user within two months of its launch, now has competition from Google. Days after people speculated ChatGPT will “kill” Google in the coming months, CEO Sundar Pichai, in his blog yesterday, announced Bard, a new chatbot tool designed to compete with ChatGPT.

Pichai has stated that the company will make it available to trusted testers before it becomes more widely available to the general public in the coming weeks.

ChatGPT has been the most sensational technological offering on the internet in a long time. It is accessible to everyone using an internet browser.

You enter queries or commands, and ChatGPT responds (to almost anything). Within five days of its release, one million individuals had registered to use it.

Chat GPT altering how students are instructed and educated. With this Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool capable of writing academic essays that appear perfect, is it an opportunity, or a threat, or both, for education?

Some users have already evaluated the tool’s capacity to generate persuasive versions of essay question responses and even publishable academic papers. Others argue that students may benefit from learning the inner workings of technology and may use it to investigate the possibilities and limitations of online information sources.

Bard is a conversational Al service that is currently in the testing phase and is powered by LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications).

It provides responses to current and high-quality queries by drawing on information from the Internet. Pichai describes Bard as “a creative outlet and a jumping-off point for inquiry”, allowing users to explain fresh discoveries from NASA‘s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old or learn more about the finest strikers in football right now and then get workouts to improve their skills.

Pichai stated that the company would first release Bard on a ‘lightweight’ version of LaMDA, which will require substantially less computational power, allowing it to grow to more users and solicit more feedback.

Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web: whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner.” CEO Sundar Pichai

What is LaMDA?

Google announced

LaMDA is “the language model” that people are afraid of.

After a Google employee believed LaMDA was conscious, the AI became a topic of discussion due to the impression it gave off in its answers.

In addition, the engineer hypothesized that LaMDA, like humans, expresses its anxieties through communication.

First and foremost, it is a statistical method for predicting the following words in a series based on the previous ones.

LaMDA’s innovativeness lies in the fact that it may stimulate dialogue in a looser fashion than is allowed by task-based responses.

So that the conversation can flow freely from one topic to another, a conversational language model needs to be familiar with concepts such as Multimodal user intent, reinforcement learning, and suggestions.

How is Bard different from/Better than ChatGPT?

Google’s Bard is an experimental Al service. On the other hand, ChatGPT was developed by Open Al, a startup Al research business.

ChatGPT can only access data through 2021. Meanwhile, LaMDA from Google takes information from the Web to deliver responses. This may offer Bard an advantage when answering questions concerning recent occurrences.

Bard looks like a limited rollout right now. Google is looking for a lot of feedback at the moment around Bard, so it is hard to say whether it can answer more questions than ChatGPT.

Google has also not made clear the amount of knowledge that Bard possesses.
For instance, with ChatGPT, we know its knowledge is limited to events till 2021. Of course, it is based on LaMDA, which has been in the news for a while now. Bard is also built on Transformer technology—which is also the backbone of ChatGPT and other AI bots. Transformer technology was pioneered by Google and made open-source in 2017.

Transformer technology is a neural network architecture, which is capable of making predictions based on inputs and is primarily used in natural language processing and computer vision technology.

Previously, a Google engineer claimed LaMDA was a ‘sentient’ being with consciousness. The engineer, Blake Lemoine Google later fired the engineer. Still, Google has also showcased several capabilities of LaMDA last year, including a new project called Wordcraft which was being used to help write fiction.

Last September, Google revealed that it “teamed up with professional writers who used the Wordcraft editor to create a volume of short stories.”

These stories are available online for reading. But Google had also cautioned that LaMDA was not very good at writing fiction by itself and right now was more of a helper to human writers.

How to Access Google Bard?

Google announced

Google Bard is currently unavailable for public testing, but select users have access. We can expect Google to gradually open the service to public. Google is releasing a “lightweight model version of LaMDA” which requires much less computing power, and will will help the company receive more feedback.

CEO Pichai also mentioned that users would soon be able to use Al-powered features in
Google Search that condense complex data into simpler formats. Individual developers, creators, and corporations will be onboarded first so they may try the company’s Generative Language API, which will be powered by LaMDA at first, with various models to follow. Google said it aims to establish a suite of tools and APIs that will make it easier for people to build more inventive Al apps in the future.

Bard is based on LaMDA and Google’s own conversational AI chatbot. It is what Pichai termed an “experimental conversational AI service,” and Google will be “opening it up to trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.”

If you are wondering how to sign up for it now, keep in mind that it’s not yet publicly available. Given Google has taken such a slow and cautious approach with LaMDA – it has been in testing for nearly two years – the Bard rollout is actually quite fast in comparison.

Google is also hosting an AI event on Wednesday, where more details and confirmations will be revealed.

According to the blog post, Bard “draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses.”

In short, it will give in-depth, conversational and essay-style answers just like ChatGPT does right now.

A user will be able to ask Bard “to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills,” according to the blog post.

However, Google has also said that the model is currently a “lightweight” version of LaMDA, and the one being “requires significantly less computing power.

Enabling us to scale to more users, allowing for more feedback.” Remember running these models also requires significant computing power. For instance, ChatGPT is powered by Microsoft Azure Cloud services. This also explains why the service often runs into errors at times, because too many people are accessing it.

Google says it will look at external feedback, along with “internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.” So yes, Bard is now in a testing phase.

Google Bard vs ChatGPT

Google announced

With Microsoft reportedly investing $10 billion in the startup Al research centre OpenAl, the tech giant’s flagship search company is facing new competition due to this revelation. Google’s management is said to have declared a “code red” scenario for its search company due to the enormous attention ChatGPT has received.

The main distinction between Google Bard AI and ChatGPT is Google Bard AI’s ability to take real-time events into account when generating its responses. Google’s Bard AI has yet to make its appearance. But here’s what you should expect to be different from ChatGPT, according to the recent updates:

* Google Apprentice Bard AI will be able to answer real-time questions.
* You need to make one minor adjustment to your Google settings to get your regular search results when using Google Bard AI. In ChatGPT, only text responses are returned.
* Google Apprentice Bard is based on Lambda. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is based on GPT.
* ChatGPT has its own plagirim detector called AI Text Classifier .This feature is not yet available for Apprentice Bard AI.
* Google Apprentice Bard AI is, for now, completely free. OpenAI recently launched its paid plan to users called ChatGPTPlus.

Why has Google announced Bard right now?

Google announced

The timing of this announcement is critical. It comes as Microsoft is preparing to announce an integration of ChatGPT into its Bing Search engine.

Microsoft announced a surprise event today, just one day ahead of Google’s own AI event.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also posted a picture with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella ahead of this. The event takes place at 11.30 pm IST.

Microsoft has already invested $10 billion this year in OpenAI and the integration of ChatGPT into Bing will pose a new headache for Google and its core Search business.

Google might have invented the ‘Transformer’ technology, but it is now being seen as a latecomer to the AI revolution.

ChatGPT in many ways is being called the end of Google Search, given that conversational AI can give long, essay style and sometimes elegant answers to a user’s queries. Of course, not all of these are correct, but then AI is capable of correcting itself as well and learning from mistakes.

Concerns About AI

For Google, whose core business is search, this has resulted in a ‘code red’ at the company as New York Times reported.

In fact, another New York Times report said that Google executives called in founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin to review plans around AI.

The founders have mostly not been involved in the day-to-day running of Google, but clearly, some sort of alarm bells have gone off at the company.

It is also becoming clear that many see ChatGPT as being superior right now, and the onus is now on Google to prove that LaMDA and Bard are actually ahead and can do better.

It also doesn’t help that Microsoft has invested so significantly in OpenAI and plans to offer ChatGPT to its enterprise customers as part of the Azure Cloud services.

So for Google, the Microsoft-OpenAI threat comes from multiple angles.

Google has also announced it plans to bring AI features to search results. The blog post notes, “Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web: whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner.”

Again, these features will roll out soon. What this means is that when searching for information on Google in the future, one can expect chunks and nuggets of information, likely sourced from blogs or articles.

Google Bard AI use cases

The Google AI chatbot has several potential uses that can simplify your life and fill in knowledge gaps. The followings are just some of the most expected ones:

* Get answers: If you have a query, you can ask the chatbot, which will use its sophisticated AI algorithms to generate a thoughtful and appropriate response.
* Find information with the familiar engine: Whether you’re looking for a weather report or the latest sports scores, the Google Bard AI chatbot can help powered by the search engine.
* Automate tasks: The chatbot is powered by Google AI and can take care of several activities automatically, such as making a restaurant reservation or booking a flight. Google was already finding them for you, with this new chatbot it is also expected to be able to buy them for you.
* Your personal AI assistant: The Google Bard AI chatbot can assist you in managing your time and ensuring that you never miss an appointment or forget to complete a critical step in a process.
* Social hub: The chatbot can also function as a social hub, facilitating user conversations in both group and one-on-one settings.

Bard’s Availability

Google is releasing Bard initially with a lightweight model version of LaMDA, which requires less computing power, making it easier to scale to more users and get more feedback.

The company plans to combine external feedback with its internal testing to enhance Bard’s responses and to ensure higher ‘quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information’.

Trusted testers will be given access to Bard in the coming weeks, before it becomes more widely available to the public. Google’s introduction of Bard comes a day before Microsoft is conducting an event at its headquarters. The company is expected to introduce OpenAI’s ChatGPT to its own search engine, Bing.

Concerns About AI

Concerns About AI

The initial criticisms of ChatGPT, that Bard may also face are twofold.

First, there are concerns that creativity and labour may become indistinguishable to readers.

For example, a teacher may it challenging to go through essays submitted by a tech-savvy younger generation and distinguish between AI-generated works and originals. To address this, OpenAI launched AI Classifier that distinguishes between AI-text and human text last week. Bard may also need to launch a similar software.

Second, AI is prone to bias because they are trained on existing data and the data reflects societal inequalities of the times. AI generated artwork on portraits of couples at weddings in different parts of India produced biased outputs that social media users criticised for highlighting stereotypes.

Both OpenAI and Google acknowledge the concern, and are investing resources to address the issue, but neither has found a solution.

In India, digital adoption does not mean digital literacy, and there are several constraints to digital access.

Students may have access to ChatGPT or Bard, but teachers may not have access to or the skills to understand the AI Classifier solution.

Second, AI generated content amplifies bias and readers may consume biased information as truth.

Bard will need to address these concerns before it rolls out in India to win the trust of Indian users and the government.
