Mobile Gaming

There’s a continued pandemic-induced surge in mobile gaming in India, with a healthy rate of 16% (YoY), as per the latest findings from CyberMedia Research. The number of hardcore gamers has seen a remarkable 40% growth in the post-Covid period, riding on the increasing mobile gaming maturity, evidenced in increased game time, and thanks to powerful smartphones, revealed the study.

“Our gaming intelligence attributes this spike in hardcore and enthusiast gaming to powerful smartphones across the mid and lower price tiers,” said Prabhu Ram, Head- Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CyberMedia Research.

A similar growth trend is observed in the case of casual gamers, while the proportion of hyper-casual gamers declined 16% YoY, according to the CMR survey insights, which further say that 86% gamers are satisfied with their current smartphone as a gaming device.

“Hyper-casual gamers have, over the past two years, switched or upgraded to new smartphones, and this is reflected in the increased game time. At the core of these democratized gaming experiences in the value-for-money smartphone segment are, amongst others, the powerful smartphone processors,” said Ram.

Binge gaming to the fore

According to its latest gaming survey insights from CMR’s gaming-centric intelligence, three in every five gamers spend 31 mins to 120 mins in a typical play session. On an average, each gamer spends 79 minutes in a typical play session. The average number of games installed in a smartphone stands at 7, of which at least 4 games are played regularly. Three in every five gamers play action/adventure games. Hardcore gamers mostly play, or prefer action, and first-person shooter games.

From Free-to-play to Paid mobile gaming

With increasing gaming maturity, casual and hardcore Indian mobile gamers are now increasingly switching to paid gaming apps from freemium apps, as per the CMR gaming survey results. In comparison to the pre-Covid period, there has been a whopping more than100% uptick in paid gaming in post-Covid India. The average mobile gaming spend during this period increased a significant 44%, it found.

Participation in online gaming contests

The study said two in every three hardcore gamers have participated in online gaming contests, with a 10% YoY growth in gamer participation. Hardcore gamers participate, on an average, in eight online gaming contests annually. Some of the prominent gaming titles played include Counter Strike (40%), StarCraft II (39%), League of Legends (38%) and Rocket League (36%). Four in every nine hardcore gamers have played cloud-based games on their smartphone, with cloud gaming familiarity driven by Sony PlayStation Now (PS Now) (51%), Microsoft Xbox Game Pass (47%) and Google Stadia (42%).

The rise of democratized smartphone gaming experiences

Battery life (66%), fast game loading (54%) and display (53%) are the top three smartphone aspects that matter while playing game on smartphone, as per the study. Among gamers, awareness and perception rating in terms of gaming performance have increased across MediaTek product portfolio, including the MediaTek Dimensity and MediaTek Helio G series. Qualcomm leads in brand awareness (87%) and usage (29%). MediaTek followed closely – brand awareness (82%) and usage (28%). MediaTek enjoys a strong growth momentum with higher conversion rate of awareness to usage among gamers. Four in every five mobile gamers rate MediaTek highly for its gaming performance.

To help visually impaired people, IIT Kanpur has developed an affordable novel touch-sensitive smartwatch. Featuring health parameters such as heart rate, SpO2 etc, instant short-timer, hydration reminder and others, the cost-effective smart watch comes with a touch-sensitive tactile interface that displays information using vibrations. This makes it more suitable for usage as compared to audio-based output devices available in the market.

India is home to about 20% of the total around 49 million blind and 285 million visually impaired persons in the world. The haptic smartwatch by IIT Kanpur is aimed to address the difficulty faced by visually impaired persons in easily interacting with devices due to the absence of tactile interface.

Equipped with modern techniques, the haptic smartwatch has been developed by Prof. Siddhartha Panda, Department of Chemical Engineering, and Vishwaraj Srivastava at the National Centre for Flexible Electronics, IIT Kanpur. Haptics deals with the technology that stimulates the sense of touch.

Features of haptic smartwatch

The haptic smartwatch also features “smart timer”, which is used to set short-timers using simple gestures. The dial face consisting vibration-based output and tactile touch-sensitive hour markers is used to create an interface to select different apps, to read time, haptically recognize different apps, and to sense the numbers.

To read health parameters such as the heart rate and SpO2, the haptic smartwatch has sensor like PPG (Photoplethysmography). To measure the step count and to keep track of daily activity, the smartphone is equipped with an accelerometer.

Users will be able to read all these parameters by using the haptic menu. The haptic smartwatch has a special feature called a “smart timer” which is used to set short timers using a simple and unique gesture.

Congratulating Professor Panda, and Vishwaraj Srivastava, for this invention, Abhay Karandikar, director IIT Kanpur, said that it is our objective at IIT Kanpur to make innovations inclusive for all.

Professor Karandikar is hopeful that the newly developed haptic smartwatch will be a boon for the blind and the visually impaired.

“The touch-sensitive and vibration-based features would prove to be revolutionary in giving the sense of time to the blind and the visually impaired,” says Professor Karandikar.

Despite concerns over economic slowdown and inflation, the global smartwatch market recorded 13% more shipments compared to the same period last year. Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Garmin, and Amazfit dominated the market, according to the Counterpoint Research’s recently published Global Smartwatch Model Tracker.

Apple took the first place with a solid lead and increased 14% YoY in Q1 2022. Some shipments carried over to Q1 2022 due to a month late launch of Apple Watch 7, which helped continue the strength of the brand.

Samsung solidified second place with 46% YoY increase in shipments, followed by Huawei and Xiaomi. Thanks to the popularity of Galaxy Watch 4 series which helped Samsung grew significantly in the APAC region.

Huawei remained flat YoY in terms of shipments, while Xiaomi recorded its first top four position with 69% YoY growth. Due to the weak position in the international market caused by GMS restrictions, the proportion of the Chinese market in the Huawei’s total shipments is gradually increasing.

With 69% YoY growth, Xiaomi is breaking its shipment record every quarter as it rapidly penetrates globally. A large proportion of its sales come from the low-end segment under $100.

Garmin and Amazfit are other top performers. Garmin ranked fifth in terms of shipments, but ranked in third in terms of revenues thanks to its higher ASP. Garmin occupies the majority portion in the premium segment over $500.

Amazfit maintained its market share by occupying sixth place thanks to the GTR 3 and GTS 3 series that launched in the fourth quarter of 2021. In the meantime, it has been working to expand outside of China and has had some success increasing its presence in Europe.

Region wise, only Europe recorded flat growth, while other grew YoY. Other major brands such as Garmin and Fitbit performed weakly in the European market as compared to Apple and Samsung. These two brands continued to grow year-over-year, during this period.

Experts are of the view that impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine will become more serious in Q2.

With 24% YoY in fourth quarter of the 2021, smartwatch market recorded highest ever quarterly shipments. It came as a breather for the market as the global smartwatch market shipments hardly grew in 2020 due to COVID-19. The fourth quarter alone saw shipments of more than 40 million units, the highest quarterly shipments ever.

Samsung, Amazfit and Garmin recorded a higher growth than the market average, although Apple remained the undisputed leader. The Indian market quadrupled YoY thanks to the notable growth of local brands such as Noise.
