Realme UI 4.0 Accused of Collecting User Data Without Consent; Government to Investigate Further

Realme UI 4.0 has been a controversial update. The update, announced last year, was infamous for the number of pre-installed bloatware apps. Ads and app recommendations, including explicit content, followed this. Realme was quick to fix the issue partly. However, the update continues to have dark patterns that might not be easily noticeable to the average consumer.

Realme has reportedly been tracking user activity and collecting data to improve the user experience and optimise device functions.

Users took to Twitter to raise the issue, which has attracted the Indian government’s attention.

Union Minister of Electronics and Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has intervened following complaints of several issues.

The minister assured that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) would look into the matter and test the feature.

Realme UI 4.0 Collecting User Data?

Realme UI 4.0 might collect user data via a feature called “Enhanced Intelligent Services”, enabled by default on its devices. Users have been uploading a screenshot of the feature, which shows that the feature is enabled by default. The description states that Enhanced Intelligent Services improves the user experience by optimising device functions based on how you use your device.

The feature collects the user’s information, including device information, app usage statistics, location information, calendar events, etc. The feature also collects statistics about unread SMS messages and missed calls.

Enhanced Intelligent Services requires access to the user’s location, internet connection, calendar events, call logs, and messages.

While the feature might be using machine learning and claim to enhance the user experience, it is unknown if the collected data stays on the device and if it is sent to remote servers. This further raises concerns over user data security and privacy.

Realme, when writing this, has not officially commented on the issue. If you want to turn off the feature, which we would advise, you can go to Settings > Additional Settings -> System Services and then disable Enhanced Intelligent Services.

OPPO and OnePlus smartphones also have the same feature. Since Realme UI 4.0 is based on ColorOS 13, it is bound to have most of the system features that the BBK-owned company offers. The same is the case with Oxygen OS 13, which is based on ColorOS 13 and has some minor design tweaks but shares most of the underlying features.

We could verify the same on the OnePlus Nord 2, which runs Android 13-based Oxygen OS 13. The feature can be disabled by going to Settings > System > Additional Settings > System Services and disabling Enhanced Intelligent Services.

It is worth noting that the feature was enabled by default. We also would advise turning off the location permission for this feature and other unwanted apps and services.

As a thumb rule, we would advise not giving any app or service access to your location, microphone, call logs or photos and videos. While most of these apps claim to collect the data to improve the user experience, there is no clarity on whether the data remains on the device.

If the data is sent to servers, it is unknown how one deals with your data without your knowledge.

Is Realme under government scanner for collecting user data?

Just days after CEO Madhav Seth exited Realme, the company seems to have come under the government’s lens for capturing users’ personal data such as call logs, location info, SMS and more.

Responding to a tweet claiming that Realme’s ‘Enhanced Intelligent Services’ captures users’ personal information and has been activated by default, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for IT & Electronics, tweeted that this would be checked. He also tagged the Ministry of Electronics & IT’s official Twitter handle in this tweet.

A tweet by Rishi Bagree stated, “Realme’s smartphone has a feature (Enhanced Intelligent Services) that captures the user’s data (call logs, SMS, and location info) and it is ‘On’ by default. You can only see this ‘on’ by default feature when you go to Settings -> Additional Settings -> System Services -> Enhanced Intelligent Services. Indian users are kept in the dark to share their data without their consent. This is basically forced consent since it’s on by default. Is this data being sent to China?”

This service feature is hidden deep under settings and most users are not even aware of something of it. But the tweet was followed by some other users complaining of a similar feature being spotted in OnePlus devices as well. BBK Electronics Corporation is the parent company of Oppo, Vivo, and Realme. And OnePlus is Oppo’s subsidiary.

Realme is popular in India, and has a market share close to 14.5% here.

This isn’t the first time that a Chinese smartphone maker is being accused of collecting user data. For instance, the US barred companies in that country from doing business with Huawei, which once dominated the smartphone industry and equipment segment, in 2019 due to national security concerns about the Chinese firm supplying equipment for network infrastructure (particularly as the US undergoes its ongoing rollout of 5G).

After a Twitter user pointed out that Realme phones come with an “Enhanced Intelligent Services” feature that collected device information, app usage statistics and other user info, Minister of State for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the government will “have it tested and checked.”

Chandrasekhar made the statement when he retweeted the original tweet, which shared the screenshot and accusations against the Chinese smartphone brand Realme. The original tweet and accusations were shared by user Rishi Bagree, who is known for sharing polarising content on social media.

In the original tweet, Bagree said the option for “Enhanced Intelligent Services” is on by default and insinuated that this feature is used to send Indian users’ data—including call logs, SMS and location info—to China. Realme’s parent company is BBK Electronics, the same Guangzhou-based company that is the parent of Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus and iQoo; all major Chinese phone brands sold in India.

The “Enhanced Intelligence Services” feature cited by Bagree and amplified by the minister is vaguely-worded and seems like an intrusive feature. Indianexpress.com confirmed that the feature is turned on by default on the Realme 11 Pro.

According to information in the phone’s settings, the Enhanced Intelligent Services feature is essential for many of the phones’ features. The phone’s charging optimisation feature needs to collect location information and app usage statistics, the wallpapers and other personalisation features need to collect statistics about unread messages, missed calls and other crucial information, according to the feature’s information page in the phone’s UI.

The same feature also seemed to be turned on by default in the OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite. OnePlus is also a sub-brand of BBK Electronics.

But this feature is not exclusive to Chinese smartphone brands. A look at the privacy settings on a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE reveals that even the South Korean company has the tendency to enable a similar “Send diagnostic data” option by default.

In Samsung’s case, the phone also takes the liberty to link this diagnostic data with other information from your Samsung phone.

It is not immediately clear what exactly any of these companies plan to do with the data they collect from users’ phones and if these functions are essential to the products and services offered by them, the onus is on them to explain to users why that is so.

Latest Update: A new microsite for the Asus ROG Ally on Flipkart reveals that the handheld gaming device will go on sale in India via the e-commerce website during a flash sale on July 7.

ASUS teased the launch of the ASUS ROG Ally for the Indian market yesterday. The device debuted in the global market last month, and it is set to launch in India in the coming few days.

The ASUS ROG Ally is the first handheld gaming device from ASUS which features a 7-inch Full HD+ display, AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, up to 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD storage, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

While ASUS has not announced the launch date of the device yet, the sale date of the ASUS ROG Ally is now revealed courtesy of the microsite set by Flipkart.

Earlier today, ASUS teased the arrival of its ROG Ally handheld gaming console in India. The device debuted last month in multiple markets.

Now, a Twitter user has spotted the microsite of the device on Flipkart confirming its availability on the e-commerce platform. It also reveals the sale date of the ROG Ally.

ASUS ROG Ally sale date revealed

As per the Flipkart listing, the ASUS ROG Ally will be available for purchase on Flipkart starting July 7th.

This means that we can expect the device to launch before the sale date. ASUS is yet to share an official launch date of the handheld gaming console.

Since the Taiwanese brand has already teased the device, we can expect more details to be announced in the coming days.

The ROG Ally will be the first official handheld device in India in many years since the PlayStation Portable.

Asus ZenFone 10 renders leak ahead of launch

New renders of the Asus ZenFone 10 have been posted online, showing off five different colour variants. Its design is mostly identical to that of its predecessor, complete with two large camera modules and prominent ZenFone branding.

The Asus ZenFone 10 is confirmed for a June 29 global launch. In the US, it could come with a US$749 price tag, something that will certainly vary based on markets. A recent Geekbench listing confirmed it would run Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

Now, thanks to renowned leaker Evan Blass, we have a good look at the ZenFone 10’s design and colourways (black, blue, red, white and green).
Looks-wise, the Asus ZenFone 10 hasn’t strayed much from its predecessor, the ZenFone 9.

It keeps the two large vertically-aligned camera modules, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, hole-punch selfie camera and volume rocker. The Asus ZenFone branding, however, has been moved to directly below the camera modules. It doesn’t advertise its camera prowess and gimbal stabilization, either.

Unfortunately, the renders do not clarify the Asus ZenFone 10’s screen size. There are two speculations as of now, 5-9 inches (same as the ZenFone 9) and 6.3 inches. The chances of it being the former are higher, as the ZenFone is one of the few devices that cater to the niche market of sub-6-inch smartphones. Plus, it would involve redesigning a new chassis from the ground up.

ASUS Zenfone 10 To Launch In Five Colours

As per the renders shared by @evleaks, aka Evan Blass, the ASUS Zenfone 10 will be introduced in five colour options – Black, Red, Blue, White, and Green. The Green colour option will be new this time, as the Zenfone 9, which debuted last year, was introduced in Black, Red, Blue, and White colourways.

Additionally, the renders reveal the design of the handset. If we look at the renders, we can see that the smartphone will feature a dual-camera setup accompanied by a LED flash. The device will have a punch-hole cutout at the top left corner of the screen, which will accommodate the selfie camera.

The power and volume keys will be located on the right side of the device. As far as the specifications go, the Zenfone 10 is confirmed to feature a 5.9-inch display. We can expect the smartphone to come with an AMOLED panel which could offer a 120Hz refresh rate. Furthermore, the smartphone is also confirmed to come with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It might pack up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB/512GB of internal storage.

As far as the rest of the specifications are concerned, the handset is tipped to feature a 200MP primary camera which could have OIS support. The details about the secondary sensor at the backside remain unknown currently.

Furthermore, the handset is also said to retain an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. The previous leaks suggest the device will retail for $749 (roughly Rs 62,000). This pricing could be for the Zenfone 10’s base model, which could pack 16GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

The official looking press renders reveals that the Zenfone 10 will retain the same design as its predecessor. It will feature a compact form factor with a boxy design. The device has volume rocker and power buttons on the right side.

The the back panel has two traditional camera rings.The press renders reveal that the Zenfone 10 will be available in black, blue red and white colors. There will also be a green color variant this time.
Apart from this, the press renders do not reveal any additional information of the Asus Zenfone 10.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is already confirmed to be powered by a Qualcomm snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. It will retain if a 5.9-inch screen with a punch-hole cutout at the top left corner. The upcoming offering will feature a six axis, Gimball stabilizer. The smartphone will also come with support for wireless charging.

The ASUS Zenfone 10 is expected to feature an AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. As per Geekbench listing, it will pack 16GB RAM. The device is rumored to be backed by a 5,000mAh battery unit with support for 67W fast charging. A per a leak, the Zenfone 10 will reportedly cost $749 for the 16+256GB variant.

Improved resource allocation and memory management

OnePlus is making changes to the way OxygenOS manages resources and memory. OnePlus has optimised the OxygenOS 13’s AI System Booster to achieve up to 30 percent fluency rate, up to 20 percent faster app installation speed, and up to 10 percent faster app startup speed. OnePlus says that the OxygenOS 13 elevates the overall experience of OS and now offers a “smooth, stable, and seamless experience.”

Improvements to OxygenOS AOD features

The company has always used AMOLED panels on most of the portfolio of its Android devices and has offered an Always-on Display (AOD) feature to quickly glance at important information while the phone is locked. The company is now heavily iterating on the AOD feature. OnePlus has extended its partnership with Spotify and is offering extensive controls for Spotify on the AOD screen. Gaming improvements
OnePlus is giving a big boost to gaming as well. The company has integrated an improved HyperBoost Gaming Engine and GPA 4.0 frame stabiliser for a smooth and effortless gaming experience. It also includes performance modes to tune the battery savings or prioritise high frame rates for pro gamers.

Quality of life improvements to System launcher

OnePlus has improved the system launcher and has introduced what the company calls ‘Smart Launcher’. Sidebar Toolbox improvements
