Nothing launched its much-awaited second-generation smartphone, the Nothing Phone (2) last week.
If you are one of the pre-booking customers who received their devices starting July 15th, you might want to check the settings of your device.

The UK-based brand is now pushing an OTA software upgrade to the phone with various new features and major camera updates.

Nothing Phone 2 is yet to go on sale in India, but the technology company has already released the smartphone’s first update, which brings new features, plenty of improvements and several bug fixes.

While most users in India will get to experience this update only after they receive their units, there are others who have got access to the Phone 2 from Nothing via pop-up stores worldwide.

Regardless, there’s also design-related features that have been added even though this update seems to be primarily focussed on the phone’s cameras.

Nothing’s second phone hasn’t yet made its debut on the market and it’s already receiving its first update.
For this first update, Nothing has decided to go for camera improvements, but there are a couple of features included as well.

If you’ve already pre-ordered the Nothing Phone (2) on plan to purchase it when it goes on sale on July 17, make sure to check for a new update since it brings a handful of important improvements to the device.

First off, the portrait mode will support 2x zoom. Secondly, motion capture will be supported in 50-megapixel mode and there’s also a new Nothing style photo watermark that you can choose to use.

More improvements in the update include optimization of the HDR effectiveness across the board, as well as optimized photo clarity when shooting between 4x and 10x zoom.

Last but not least, improved camera quality when used in third party apps has been added too, along with reduced lag and optimized stabilization.

A couple of new features have been added too, such as a Glyph Composer, which can be downloaded from the Play Store. It’s used to make and record Glyph Ringtones when you’re feeling creative.

Another new feature called Glyph Progress for Uber does exactly what its name implies. You can check the progress of an incoming Uber ride via the Glyph Interface, although this feature seems to be in beta, so it might not always work as intended.

Other changes included in the update concern the Quick Settings widgets, which allow users to add their most-used Quick Settings tiles directly to their home or lock screen. Furthermore, widgets can now be added to the lock screen and Always-on display.

Finally, the Nothing Machine ringtones and notification sounds from Phone (1) have been reworked and adjusted to match the new segment design of Phone (2). Also, there are four new wallpapers added and one-handed mode.

Starting off with the new features, Nothing first states in its changelog that its Glyph Composer is finally available on the Google Play Store, that lets users create and record new ringtones.

Also added as a design feature is the Glyph Progress bar for the Uber app. One of the indicators on the rear panel that is used as a progress bar will now indicate the time taken for an incoming Uber ride to arrive.

Design-related features aside, there’s now new widgets, which can be added to the lock screen using the always-on display (AOD).

Users can also add their most used Quick Settings widgets/tiles to the home or lock screen. The update also brings new and reworked ringtones and notification sounds from the Nothing Phone 1.

These have been tweaked to suit the more segmented layout of the Glyph lighting system of the Phone 2. Also added is a one-handed mode.

The Nothing OS 2.0.1 update brings several camera-related improvements to the Nothing Phone 2. With the update, the camera’s Portrait mode now supports 2x zoom for close-up shots.

Motion capture is now supported in the 50-megapixel high resolution camera mode and HDR now works more effectively.
Meanwhile, the clarity of photos captured between 4x and 10x zoom has also been improved, as per the changelog.

Bugs with Quick Settings have been resolved and the same applies for the NFC system. There’s improved network stability among other general bug fixes with the Nothing OS 2.0.1 update.

FAQ’s

1) iPhone 15 series front glass panel and protector leak showcases key design changes.Details?

Ans) The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max did away with the notch for a pill-shaped and circular cutout that Apple has dubbed the Dynamic Island. The standard models will allegedly also ditch the notch this year and this has been corroborated by pictures of the iPhone 15 series’ front glass panel and protector shared by ace leaker Ice Universe.

The images not only seem to confirm that the entire lineup will be notchless, but they are also in line with rumors that said the Pro models would have slimmer bezels.

The top picture shows the glass panel for the two 6.1 inches models – the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro – and the two 6.7 inches models – the iPhone 15 Plus and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The bottom image apparently shows the screen protectors.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is rumored to have the thinnest bezels of all smartphones. The bezels on both Pro models will also be slightly curved around the edges compared to the iPhone 14 Pro, which could give them an Apple Watch-like look.

The entire series is expected to toss out the Lightning port for USB-C. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus could feature flat edges and an aluminum chassis, whereas the Pro could have curved rear edges and a titanium frame. The new models may also dump the mute switch for a new programable button.

The iPhone 15 Pro models are also expected to be thicker, so the cameras won’t jut out as much compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. The Pro Max is highly likely to have a periscope zoom lens for up to 6x optical zoom.

As for the internals, only the Pros are expected to have the 3nm A17 Bionic chip but all the models could feature bigger batteries. The series will probably be announced in September and it won’t be surprising at all if the iPhone 15 Pro becomes one of the best phones of 2023.

2) iPhone 15 Design Change Leaked Again; Check It Out.Details?

Ans) The iPhone 15 series is expected to bring along various design changes and while these might not be major, you can safely term them as the much-awaited ones. A new leak has now emerged, which talks about the possible design change we can expect for the entire lineup and this is an interesting one.

iPhone 15 Display Details Appear

Tipster Ice Universe has shared the front glass panel and the screen protectors of the iPhone 15 lineup, giving us a look at what the 2023 iPhones’ display may be like. It shows the inclusion of Dynamic Island even for the non-Pro iPhone 15 models, something that has been leaked previously.

To recall, Apple introduced the concept of Dynamic Island last year, which replaces the notch with an elongated punch hole, which not only houses the front camera and other necessary but is way more functional to show notifications, the battery status, and more information. This was sadly restricted to the iPhone 14 Pro models.

But, there’s a high chance that this will change and all iPhone 15 models will get the functionality with some upgrades of course. It is also shown that there will be thinner bezels for the new iPhones.

The iPhone 15 and the 15 Pro are likely to get a 6.1-inch display while the iPhone 15 Plus and the 15 Pro Max will get a bigger 6.7-inch screen. The Pro models are also expected to include rounded edges while the vanilla variants could stick to the flat ones, much like the iPhone 14 series.

Other design changes could include a bigger camera hump (for the iPhone 15 Pro and the 15 Pro Max), the inclusion of a USB Type-C port, and a new mute button, which might be called the Action button. Apart from silencing calls and other notifications, it could be used for other tasks like summoning Siri, acting like a camera shutter, and more.

The iPhone 15 could come in new pink, green, and light yellow colors while the iPhone 15 Pro models might bring a new dark red or deep blue color. As for the other changes, expect performance, camera, and battery improvements. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is also likely to have a periscopic lens, which will be a first for an iPhone. The iPhone 15 price could be alarming but it would be best to wait for official details.

Since the iPhone 15 launch is expected in September, we should wait until then for a better idea of the new iPhones.

iPhone Vision concept model based on the Apple Vision Pro: Check ultra-premium stunning design by Apple

iPhone Vision

HIGHLIGHTS

* The ‘iPhone Vision’ is a new concept imagined with inspiration from Apple’s Vision Pro.
* It comes with an immersive display, and audio with ‘Liquid Lens’, and a back screen as well.
* Here’s what the concept iPhone Vision looks like, and how it’s different from the regular iPhones.

The iPhone is one of the most popular devices, and a new concept design based on the Vision Pro which Apple calls its spatial computer.

Designer Antonio De Rosa from ADR Studio Design (via BGR) has created a concept iPhone model based on Apple’s recently unveiled Vision Pro spatial computer.

Called the iPhone Vision, the phone features a waterfall display delivering an immersive edge-to-edge experience. Space Audio allows users to experience surround sound giving them the perception of hearing sounds based on the location that they were supposed to originate from.

The Liquid Lens camera system replaces the Wide and Ultra-wide cameras and is equipped with a periscope lens for exceptional zoom capabilities. The iPhone 15 Pro Max, to be released later this year, will be the first iPhone ever to include a periscope lens.

iPhone Vision
iPhone Vision

The back of the device is equipped with “Back Screen” which is a small display on the rear of the device that shows notifications and widgets without having to flip the phone screen-side up.

The concept iPhone Vision would be powered by Apple’s powerful M2 and R1 chips; this is the same chip combination used with the Vision Pro and would allow the iPhone Vision to achieve performance levels beyond those of other smartphones.

The device would be equipped with a USB-C port and supports 30W MagSafe charging. It looks as though the buttons on the side are solid-state and are not physical.

Pressing on them would produce haptic feedback giving the users the sensation of pressing on a physical button.

iPhone 15 Pro models
iPhone 15 Pro models

Rumors earlier this year called for the iPhone 15 Pro models to be equipped with solid-state buttons. Reportedly, the costs and the complexity of replacing the physical buttons this year has led Apple to wait until next year’s iPhone 16 Pro line to add this technology to its premium smartphone models.

Bumps on the top and bottom of the rear panel allow the device to lay down flat even when it is screen-side up. And without a SIM tray on the phone, the iPhone Vision would be all “eSIM.” The embedded SIM is mounted on the motherboard and is easier to activate than a physical SIM card.

It is also easier to switch devices using an eSIM. The screen would feature peak brightness of 2200 nits outdoors and the battery would be able to keep the lights on all day.

The concept iPhone Vision even has a concept price. The device would retail at $1,599 or 24 monthly payments of $73.29.

iPhone Vision concept design

iPhone Vision concept design
iPhone Vision concept design

Designed by ADR Studio Design and Antonio De Rosa, the ‘iPhone Vision’ has been heavily inspired by the Vision Pro. The iPhone Vision has curved edges much like the iPhone 11, and from the front it can pass off as an iPhone. It’s the rear panel where there’s a lot going on with even a tiny display sitting next to the camera sensors.

The iPhone Vision has a waterfall display for “an immersive edge-to-edge viewing experience”. The concept images show notifications appearing on the side edge of the iPhone. It has an Always On display with 1,800 nits peak HDR brightness, and 2,200 nits peak outdoor brightness.

It is equipped with Space Audio that should provide “crisp and clear surround sound”. The iPhone Vision also has Liquid Lens for high-resolution photography, and a periscope lens for zoom capabilities.

This is something we might actually see on an iPhone soon as the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to house a periscope lens.

The back screen will display notifications and widgets so you can easily access them. The idea behind this is so that you don’t have to flip the phone to check your notifications. But the iPhone Vision isn’t a fold or flip so it doesn’t make sense. The screen could be used as a viewfinder though, for the rear cameras.

Like the Vision Pro, the iPhone Vision also runs a dual-chip system with R1 and M2 chips. More features on this futuristic iPhone include USB-C, all-day battery, improved SOS, SIM-less connectivity, 30W MagSafe charging support, and a depth mic.

This is only a concept design that Apple will most likely not take cues from but it’s interesting to see what the iPhone’s future looks like. There are many takes on futuristic iPhones, and this one adds something fresh to the queue.

1) Unopened, mint condition iPhone from 2007 goes for an insane Rs 1.3 Cr at auction.Details?

Ans) The first-generation iPhone, introduced by Steve Jobs, revolutionized the smartphone industry with its touchscreen interface and integration of various features like music, internet browsing, and streaming.

As a result, the original iPhone holds significant value, particularly when it is a factory-sealed and unopened device. These rare iPhones have been known to fetch high prices at auctions, and in a recent auction, the first-generation iPhone broke records as the most valuable iPhone sold.

The auction, conducted by LCG Auction, featured a 4GB version of the first-generation iPhone that was sold for an astonishing $158,000 (around Rs 1.3 crore). Initially, the estimated selling price for the iPhone was expected to be between $50,000 and $100,000.
However, due to intense demand, the bidding quickly escalated from $10,000 on June 30, ultimately reaching the final price of $158,644. This amount is 250 per cent higher than the previous record of $63,000 (around Rs 51.6 Lakh) set in February for another rare 4GB original iPhone.

It is worth noting that the 4GB variant of the first-generation iPhone was originally launched in 2007 at a price of $499, approximately around Rs 40,000. With the recent auction, the value of this particular variant has increased by a staggering 318 times over the span of 16 years.

The LCG Auction described the condition of the highly valuable 4GB sealed original iPhone, providing details about its pristine and unopened state:

Our offering is an exceedingly rare, factory-sealed, first-release 4GB model in exceptional condition. Virtually flawless along the surface and edges, the factory seal is clean with correct seam details and tightness. Labels on the reverse are correctly pristine beneath the seal. Outstanding color and gloss. Brand new, never activated. The phone’s provenance is pristine as the consignor was part of the original engineering team at Apple when the iPhone first launched. Collectors and investors would be hard pressed to find a superior example. Relevance and rarity comprise a winning formula for this red-hot collectible.

The auctioned iPhone holds even greater significance as it originated from a former Apple engineer who was directly involved in the development of the smartphone. This connection to an individual who worked on the device adds an extra layer of rarity and historical value.

Furthermore, the 4GB variant of the first-generation iPhone is particularly unique because it was only manufactured for a short period before being overshadowed by the 8GB version in the market. However, in the auction, the 4GB variant fetched a higher value compared to its 8GB counterpart. This was evident when another factory-sealed original iPhone 1st-gen with an 8GB capacity was also sold at the same auction but at a lower price of $44,771 (around Rs 36 lakh).

The unexpected pricing difference between the two variants demonstrates the demand and collector’s value associated with the more limited and rare 4GB model, despite the higher storage capacity of the 8GB version.

2) Apple iPhone X Vision Pro crossover concept renders hint at a secondary display.Details?

Ans) Apple’s Vision Pro took center stage at WWDC 2023. The futuristic mixed-reality headset from Apple is ahead of the curve and comprises technologies that no other VR platform offers. This has also given an idea to product design studios to imagine how a future iPhone, inspired by the Vision Pro, might look.

The latest concept of the Vision Pro-inspired iPhone by ADR Studio Design gives us an early glimpse of how the future iPhone model will be drastically different from the current offerings, which include a modern-looking camera island and a secondary display.

Airtel Xstream Airfiber 5G Price

We don’t have details on the pricing of the Xtreme Airfiber yet. However, the Play Store listing has revealed that the 6-month Xstream AirFiber plan with 100Mbps speed will cost Rs 2,994.

Reliance’s JioFiber device was recently rumored to cost between Rs 5,500 and Rs 6,000. It won’t be surprising if Airtel prices the Xstream Airfiber in the same price range.

Faqs

1) What are Airtel Xstream AirFiber 5G Device Features?

Ans) Airtel has published a new Xstream AirFiber app on the Play Store. It will be a companion app allowing users to set up and manage the Xstream AirFiber 5G device. It will deliver fibre-like high-speed internet connectivity over the air through 5G networks at an affordable price.

One of the listing screenshots reveals the device is designed like a tower. It has Airtel branding at the top, followed by three indicators. The first indicator will be Red initially but will turn Blue when connected to 5G. It will blink continuously if it is on a 4G network. The second indicator will show signal strength for the 4G/5G network. The third and last indicator will let users know the device is ready to provide WiFi connectivity to connected devices.

The app listing further reveals a user will need to be in the 5G coverage zone to make use of the Xstream AirFiber. It will use location permission on your smartphone to find the nearest 5G spot. A user must follow directions and find a 5G spot near the open area, like a window or door. This is to ensure that the device can get the best possible 5G connectivity for optimum performance.

The device has a SIM card slot at the bottom which is where you will need to insert an Airtel 5G SIM. The device will then need to be plugged into a power source and turned on. Other devices can be connected using the WiFi network name or scanning a QR code.
Since the Xstream AirFiber device has WiFi 6 support, Airtel is promising 50% higher speed than the WiFi 5 routers. Users will also get low latency which is beneficial for online gaming.

2) What are Airtel Xstream AirFiber Price and Recharge Plans?

Ans) We do not have details about the Xstream AirFiber pricing yet. It is quite possible we may hear something as we get closer to the official launch. However, the Play Store listing has revealed a 6-month Xstream AirFiber plan with 100Mbps speed will cost Rs 2,994. This is undoubtedly affordable pricing as it comes to just Rs 499 monthly.
Reliance’s JioFiber device was recently rumoured to cost somewhere between Rs 5,500 and Rs 6,000. It would not be surprising if Airtel decides to price the Xstream AirFiber in the same price range.

3) Bharti Airtel gearing up to launch Xstream AirFiber in India.Details?

Ans) Reliance Jio announced Jio AirFiber in its 45th AGM last year in the presence of Prime Minister Modi with promises of disrupting the market but till now there is no official word on when it will be launched and available to the public, however, the competitor Airtel has gone ahead and begun testing of its own Xstream AirFiber service.
AirFiber comes with a WiFi 6 router that provides reliable high-speed broadband like speeds wirelessly through the 5G network. Airtel says that it will be able to deliver up to 50% higher speed than the WiFi-5 routers.

Airtel Xstream Fiber is aimed to meet the demands of bandwidth-intensive applications and emerging technologies. It will deliver ultra-low latency, high-speed data transfers with superior network reliability. The app of Airtel Xstream AirFiber is already live on Google Play Store.

Unlike traditional broadband services, users do not require wiring and installation through technicians as they can set up their WiFi 6 router on their own using the Xstream AirFiber app. The eligible WiFi 6 router can be purchased from local Airtel stores, depending on availability.

Initially, the company is offering Xstream AirFiber’s 6-month semi-annual plan with 100 Mbps speed for just Rs 2,994 (about Rs 499 per month). In contrast to wired Xstream Fiber, this is much more affordable as Xstream Fiber users only get 40 Mbps speed for Rs 499 per month.

In India, laying fiber wires along the city streets is a difficult and costly procedure, in addition to that, it also tends to get damaged causing inconvenience to users and requires continuous maintenance. AirFiber being wireless avoids these hurdles and will help in wider availability of high-speed internet.

The committee has also warned that if anyone is caught taking photos or making videos, legal action will be taken against them.
The temple has also asked the people to wear “decent clothes” and desist from setting up tents or camps in the temple precincts.

In the past, some pilgrims were making videos and reels inside the temple in an indecent manner as well as clicking pictures…It will be implemented strictly, that is why warning boards have also been installed at Kedarnath,” reported news agency ANI quoting Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee president Ajendra Ajay.

He said although no complaints have been received from the Badrinath Dham yet, such boards will also be installed there.

Kedarnath Temple Management Committee has finally banned the use of mobile phones inside the temple premises. This means that no photography or videography will be allowed inside Kedarnath Temple. The temple management made the ban official by issuing an official order and asking authorities to put up boards for the same.

The poster put up by Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee outside the temple says,
“Do not enter the temple premises with mobile phones; any kind of photography and videography is strictly prohibited inside the temple, and you are under the surveillance of CCTV cameras”.

Another poster outside the temple premises read, “Legal action will be taken if caught.”
But why did it happen, and what events led to this? We explain in this story.

Veena Devi, a pilgrim from Gujarat’s Surat, said the authorities should make it clear that the Char Dham temples are seats of the utmost reverence and spiritual guidance for millions of Hindus, and these places should not be treated as picnic spots.

Another pilgrim Visheswar Rai from Patna said the government instead of focusing on the influx of pilgrims in large numbers should allow only religious people to come to such temples.

Kedarnath Temple Management Committee

Sameer Shukla, the founder of Soham Himalayan Centre in Mussoorie working for preserving the traditional culture and heritage of the state, said the purpose will not be served by placing signboards.

“The government to avoid repetition of such untoward incidents should differentiate between pilgrimage and tourism with a focus on maintaining age-old customs and sanctity of the shrines. The responsibility of maintaining the sanctity of the shrine should be of whosoever is the custodian of the place either by convention or by appointment.”

Himanu Basu, another pilgrim from Kolkata, said one is not allowed inside without following the rules and regulations in South Indian temples. “There is a dress code and such practice should be followed in all temples across India.”

Kedarnath Temple Management Committee

BKTC president Ajendra Ajay said people were found uploading videos and pictures undermining the sanctity of the temple. “…therefore, the committee has prohibited any kind of photography inside the temple…”

Yogendra Singh, BKTC executive officer, said they have put up half a dozen signboards on each side of the temple to inform pilgrims about the prohibition. “It was being observed that some people were hurting the religious sentiments of the devotees by not maintaining the sanctity of the place and uploading videos.”

1) What Led to Photography and Videography Ban Inside Kedarnath Temple Premises?

Ans) Kedarnath Temple has issued several new orders (Via PTI) that are effective today. The first is the smartphone ban inside temple premises. The temple committee has also asked devotees to wear decent clothes. Lastly, it has asked people to resist setting up tents or camps in the temple precincts. Do note that legal action will be taken for not following the orders.

Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee president Ajendra Ajay said a religious space follows a set of belief systems, and the devotees should respect the same.

2) Why Mobile Phones Banned Inside Kedarnath Temple?

Ans) Multiple travel bloggers and influencers post videos about the Kedarnath temple each year to let other people know about it. There were guides, travel vlogs, reels, and full-fledged YouTube videos, which helped user plan their travel event.
However, some videos have been highly criticised by people on social media, claiming they hurt religious sentiments.

The matter became controversial when a female blogger proposed to her partner inside the Kedarnath Temple premises earlier this month. The matter was big enough to divide the internet.

Last week, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee asked the local Police to take action against such people in an open letter as they were hurting religious sentiments. The Police ensured that action would be taken against such people.
From now, the order about the mobile phone ban comes into effect.

3) What’s Next after the mobile use ban ?

Ans) If you are going to Kedarnath temple, make sure you don’t use mobile phones inside the temple or take any photos or videos. Besides that, make sure you follow other orders like wearing decent clothes and avoiding setting up tents not to attract any unwanted attention.
At this point, it is not clear what legal action will be taken against those flouting the rules.

WhatsApp Fraud Calls: Kerala man loses Rs 40,000 to AI-based Deepfake WhatsApp fraud, all about the new scam: Here’s How the Scam Unfolded

WhatsApp Fraud Calls

HIGHLIGHTS

* Online scammers are now using AI Deepfake technology to scam people.
* In one such case, a Kerala man lost Rs 40,000 to a scammer.
* The victim received a WhatsApp video call from someone who resembled an ex-colleague.
* The victim received a video call from an unknown number on Whats App.
* The caller impersonated his former colleague and requested money for a medical emergency.
* The call was not from the colleague, instead the scammer used deepfake technology to trick the victim.

AI is becoming part of our lives. From planning vacations to providing intelligent personal assistance, artificial intelligence is changing how humans see technology.

However, not everything about AI is beneficial. As this new technology becomes part of everyone’s everyday lives, even bad actors like scammers are trying to update their tricks using AI.
For instance, scammers are now using AI-based deepfake technology to steal money from people.

In a recently reported case of an AI-deepfake scam, a man from Kerala was cheated out of Rs 40,000 using AI-based deepfaking. According to Deccan Herald, the victim, Radhakrishnan, who is a native of Kozhikode, received a video call from an unknown number.

Upon receiving the call, the image of the person on the video call was similar to one of his former colleagues in Andhra Pradesh. To gain his trust, the caller even mentioned the names of some of their common friends.

WhatsApp Fraud Calls

Thinking it was a genuine call, the victim continued the video call. However, a few minutes into the call, the caller requested the victim for Rs 40,000 for immediate assistance for a relative in the hospital.

Wanting to help his friend, the victim agreed to help and sent the amount online. However, a short time later, the same person asked for Rs 35,000. But this time, the victim became suspicious. He subsequently contacted his former colleague to cross-check.

It was then that he realised he had been cheated and the call was not genuine. The victim then reported the fraud to the police.

Following the complaint, the police started an investigation and tracked the transaction to a private bank in Maharashtra.

The bank authorities later froze the account. According to the Kerala Police Cyber Cell, this is the first such cheating case in Kerala where the scammers used AI technology to fake videos. The racketeers create fake videos using pictures from social media. They can also find information like names of common friends from social media.

Police have further raised an alert against online cheating using AI-based deep fakes. They have cautioned people to double-check the veracity of such requests.
The police have also asked people to alert the police over the helpline number 1930 swiftly in case of any cheating, so that the transaction can be frozen.

AI Deepfake is the new honeypot for modern online scammers. For the uninitiated, AI Deepfake lets anyone pretend to be someone else, but it cannot change the voice and mannerisms completely.

A prime example is the famous scandal involving the comedian Tanmay Bhat and his Snapchat video pretending to be Sachin Tendulkar.
However, that was a Snapchat filter used in 2016, and deepfake tech has come a long way since then through AI.

It’s now practically impossible to tell whether the video is real or deepfaked. Scammers now use this technology to impersonate family or friends to scam money out of unsuspecting victims.
In one such case, a Kerala man lost Rs 40,000 to a WhatsApp scammer. Here is how the incident unfolded.

How AI-Based Deepfake WhatsApp Video Call Managed to Scam Kerala Man?

AI-Based Deepfake WhatsApp Video Call
AI-Based Deepfake WhatsApp Video Call

The Kerala Police has posted a detailed account of the latest AI-based deep fake WhatsApp video call scam on its official social media handles.
The victim Radhakrishnan, who lives in Kozhikode, received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number.

Thinking nothing of it, the victim picked up the call and saw someone resembling a former colleague from Andhra Pradesh.

The caller then mentioned the names of several common friends to gain Radhakrishnan’s trust. Thinking that the caller was indeed his old colleague, the victim continued the call. After the initial small talk, the caller came to the point.

The scammer mentioned that he is currently in Dubai, where one of his relatives has been admitted to a hospital. He then requested Rs 40,000 from the victim, assuring that he would return the amount as soon as he returned to India.

Again, thinking nothing of it, the victim transferred the amount to help a friend in need.

However, Radhakrishnan grew suspicious when the caller asked for Rs 35,000 for the second time. This time, the victim connected with the colleague on their original number and was shocked that they had never called him for money. Realising he had been duped, the victim reported the case to the Kerala Police.

According to the police, this is a first-of-its-kind AI deepfake video call scam reported in Kerala and has requested citizens to be vigilant. Following the complaint, the Kerala Police launched an investigation into the matter.

They tracked the Rs 40,000 transaction to a small private bank in Maharashtra, which the bank authorities have since frozen.

How to Stay Safe Against AI-Based Deepfake Video Call Scams?

Stay Safe Against AI-Based Deepfake Video Call Scams
Stay Safe Against AI-Based Deepfake Video Call Scams

The miscreants use pictures posted on social media to create deepfake videos. The names and details of family and friends can also be obtained from tags and social media profiles.

Kerala Police has requested people to be cautious and report any suspected calls to helpline number 1930 so that immediate action can be taken. Below are some precautions to be practised to stay safe.

1. Refrain from entertaining calls from unknown numbers and people.
2. If it appears to be someone known, ask personal questions that only you and they will know to verify the identity.
3. If an unusual request is made, like a request for money or a credit card number, always cross-check with the person on their original number.
4. Look for suspicious signs like a change in voice, glitching video, etc. End the call immediately if you suspect that the video is fake.
5. End the call immediately if they ask for personal information that they should not know.

Deepfake calls are tricky, and someone unaware of the technology can easily for it, just like Radhakrishnan did.

But by following the above tips, you can safeguard yourself and your loved ones from such scams. The best would be to ignore any calls from unknown or suspicious numbers.

What is AI-based deep fake calls

AI
AI

But the question is how scammers managed to trick the victim over a video call? As the call goes live and there is no possibility of editing the clip? Well, as mentioned earlier, the scammers used deep fake technology to trick the victim.

AI-based deep fake calls is a type of scam that uses artificial intelligence to create fake videos or audio recordings of people. Scammers can create these calls impersonating a trusted friend or friend or family member to trick the victim into giving up personal information or money.

Deep Fakes are created using a technique called facial reenactment. This technique involves using AI to map the movements of one person’s face onto the face of another person in a video or audio recording.

This can be done very convincingly, making it difficult to tell that the video or audio recording is real or fake.

While AI-based deep fake calls are a relatively new type of scam, it is becoming increasingly common across the globe. This is because the technology used to create deep fakes is becoming more accessible and affordable.

What makes things more serious is that with deep fake video calls like the one in the above incident, it is difficult for innocent users to distinguish the reality behind the call. As not everyone is aware of this technology.

Faqs

1) How to be safe from AI-based deep fake calls?

Ans) While deep fake calls can be tricky, here are some tips on how to be safe from AI-based deep fake calls:

* Be suspicious of any calls from people that you do not know or that you do not expect. If someone claims to be a friend or family member but you’re unsure of their identity, ask them a personal question only they would know. If they are unable to provide a satisfactory answer, it’s probable that the call is fraudulent.
* Do not give out personal information or money to people that you do not know or trust. If someone calls you and asks for your personal information, such as your Social Security number or credit card number, or asks for money, be aware not to share.
* If you suspect a call might be a deep fake or fraudulent, it’s best to end the call immediately and avoid answering any subsequent calls from that number. You can also independently reach out to the person using a verified phone number that you know belongs to them to verify the identity. This way, you can confirm the authenticity of the call and protect yourself from potential scams or impersonation.
* Report any suspicious calls to the police. If you receive a call that you think may be a deep fake, report it to the police.
Additionally, be aware of the signs of a deep fake call. These signs can include:
* The caller’s voice may sound different than you remember it.
* The caller may be asking for personal information that they should not know.
* The caller may be asking you to do something that you would not normally do, such as send money or give out your credit card number.

2) Kerala Man Conned Of Rs. 40,000 Via AI-Powered WhatsApp Video Call. Here’s How?

Ans) Scammers used AI-generated deepfakes to defraud a man of Rs 40,000 in Kerala’s Kozhikode city. According to the police, the conmen contacted the victim over WhatsApp video calls using a deepfake image generated through Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

As per the police, the victim, Radhakrishnan received a WhatsApp video call from his former colleague who worked with him in Andhra Pradesh. However, the man posing as his former co-worker was actually an AI-generated image, they said.

An official of the Cyber Wing of the Kerala police said they received the information on Friday following which the money trail was traced and the particular bank was contacted to block the amount.

Kozhikode-based Scammers are using innovative methods to dupe people of their money. “The scammers used an AI-based video interface to impersonate his friend and sought money,” Cyber Wing SP, Hari Sankar told news agency PTI.

The officer said Radhakrishnan saw one of his former colleagues on video call and responded accordingly. “However, when he received another call seeking more money, he contacted the person directly and found out that he was scammed. Radhakrishnan contacted us immediately and we were able to block the amount,” Sankar said.
The Cyber Wing official urged the public to contact the Kerala Cyber Help Line number ‘1930’ in case of suspicion of any such phone calls.

He said the scammers used a basic AI-based video interface that could only be used with blurred background and basic chin, eyes, and lip movement.
