YouTube Tests New 'Most Relevant' Subscription Feed on Mobile

Highlights

  • Introduction of a “Most Relevant” feed for mobile users.
  • Personalization based on user interaction and viewing history.
  • Optional feature with easy toggling between traditional and new feeds.
  • Limited roll-out to gather user feedback and refine the feature.

YouTube has begun experimenting with a new way to sort and display content from the channels you’re subscribed to.

A small number of mobile users now have access to an optional “Most Relevant” feed for their Subscriptions.

A New Feed For Subscribers

YouTube Tests New 'Most Relevant' Subscription Feed on Mobile
YouTube Tests New ‘Most Relevant’ Subscription Feed on Mobile

Instead of just showing videos in chronological order as the default feed does, this test mode aims to surface more personalized recommendations.

YouTube will prioritize showing uploads from creators you interact with frequently or watch most often.

The idea is to cut through inbox noise and highlight videos you’re most likely to be interested in based on your viewing habits and preferences.

However, joining the test is completely optional.

Those selected to try out the “Most Relevant” Subscriptions feed will see a new button or avatar appear at the top of the regular feed.

Tapping this toggles between the standard chronological view and the personalized one ranking channels by relevance.

So if you’re happy sticking with the current straightforward Subscriptions layout, you can just ignore the test and continue watching new uploads as they arrive.

YouTube stresses the default experience isn’t going anywhere.

Currently A Small Scale Roll-out

YouTube Updates Policies
Limited roll-out to gather user feedback and refine the feature

The experiment is rolling out gradually to just a small percentage of YouTube’s mobile userbase for now.

Wider availability will depend on the feedback and data gathered during this limited trial.

YouTube frequently runs these kinds of novice feature tests to gauge audience interest and fine-tune ideas before potentially launching them more broadly.

Trying smarter recommendation algorithms for Subscriptions could make it easier to stay on top of your favourite creators.

FAQs

What is the ‘Most Relevant’ feed on YouTube?

YouTube’s ‘Most Relevant’ feed is an experimental feature that sorts subscription videos not by upload time but by what YouTube thinks you’ll prefer to watch.

It bases its suggestions on your past interactions and viewing habits.

How do I access this new feed?

Those included in the test will see a new button or avatar on their subscription feed.

By tapping it, users can switch between the classic chronological layout and the new personalized feed.

Will this feature replace the current subscription feed?

No, YouTube has made it clear that the ‘Most Relevant’ feed is an optional test. Users can choose to stick with the conventional chronological feed if they prefer.

How is YouTube deciding which videos are most relevant?

The platform uses algorithms that analyze your interaction frequency and viewing preferences with subscribed channels to tailor the content shown in the ‘Most Relevant’ feed.

What happens if I’m not interested in participating in this test?

If you’re selected but prefer the usual layout, you can simply continue using the default chronological feed without opting into the test.

Trust Wallet Issues iOS Security Alert Based on Unverified Claims

Highlights

  • Trust Wallet warns of a zero-day iMessage exploit sold for $2 million in bitcoin.
  • Security experts question the credibility of the source, CodeBreach Lab.
  • Trust Wallet advises iOS users to disable iMessage as a precaution.
  • No evidence of exploit effectiveness; Apple has not confirmed any vulnerabilities.

The cryptocurrency wallet app Trust Wallet, owned by Binance exchange, has caused concerns by warning iOS users about an alleged security vulnerability in Apple’s iMessage system.

However, the claims appear to be based on an unverified advertisement rather than credible evidence.

Trust Wallet’s Security Flaw

In posts on social media, Trust Wallet stated it had “credible intel” about a zero-day exploit that could allow hackers to remotely access iPhones through iMessage without any user interaction required.

The company said this purported flaw was being advertised for sale on the dark web for $2 million in bitcoin.

Based on this claim, Trust Wallet advised iOS users to disable the iMessage application as a precaution until Apple releases a security patch to address the alleged issue.

The warning naturally sparked alarm among many iPhone owners concerned about being hacked.

However, upon closer inspection, the supposed “intel” appears to originate from an advertisement on a relatively unknown dark web site called CodeBreach Lab, which has no established reputation.

The advert makes the bold claim of offering a zero-click remote code execution exploit impacting the latest iOS version, but provides no proof to back this up.

Security experts have expressed skepticism, noting CodeBreach Lab’s obscure nature and complete lack of established credibility.

It seems highly likely the site’s “iMessage Exploit” listing is little more than an audacious scam attempt to trick people into paying an exorbitant sum.

While Trust Wallet may have been well-intentioned, it appears the company fell victim to fear-mongering hype rather than a genuine and verified security threat.

Apple has not acknowledged any active iMessage vulnerabilities, making this particular iOS scare story seem unfounded – at least for now.

FAQs

What did Trust Wallet claim about the iOS security flaw?

Trust Wallet claimed to have “credible intel” about a zero-day exploit in Apple’s iMessage that could allow remote access to iPhones without user interaction.

They cited an advertisement on a dark web site offering this exploit for sale.

How did Trust Wallet respond to the alleged iMessage security flaw?

Trust Wallet advised iOS users to disable iMessage until a security patch could be issued by Apple, citing concerns over user safety based on the information they believed was credible.

Where did the claim about the iMessage exploit originate?

The claim originated from an advertisement on CodeBreach Lab, a dark web site that lacks a reputable track record and is unknown to many in the cybersecurity community.

What are the concerns regarding the credibility of the iMessage exploit advertisement?

Security experts have expressed doubts about the legitimacy of the CodeBreach Lab and the iMessage exploit advertisement, considering it likely to be a scam due to the lack of proof and the site’s obscurity.

Has Apple commented on the alleged iMessage security flaw?

As of now, Apple has not acknowledged any vulnerabilities related to the claims made by Trust Wallet regarding a zero-day exploit in iMessage.

Vivo T3X Review: A Mid-Range Contender with Premium Aspirations

Highlights

  • Impressive 120Hz FHD+ display for sharp visuals
  • Long-lasting 6000mAh battery with 44W fast charging
  • Dual-camera setup featuring a 50MP main sensor
  • Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor ensures smooth performance

The Vivo T3X is a brand new offering from Vivo coming right on the heels of the Vivo T3 unveiling.

The latter was part of the Vivo’s budget offerings and the former is no different with some noticeable improvements to the user experience.

There is an air of superiority in the T3X’s design which might be a bit reminiscent of several of the past Realme phones.

Nonetheless, the T3X  is highly promising in terms of its specs on paper and its starting price of Rs 13,499.

Smartphone Configuration Price
Vivo T3x
4GB + 128GB Rs 13,999
6GB + 128GB Rs 14,999
8GB + 128GB Rs 16,499

I have used the device for a few days and now it is time to jot down my thoughts for this complete review of the Vivo T3X.

Vivo T3X: Unboxing Experience

Vivo T3X: Unboxing Experience
Vivo T3X: Unboxing Experience

Opening the box of the Vivo T3X, I was greeted with a complete set of accessories, which is becoming increasingly rare in today’s market.

The package included the phone, a charger, a USB Type-C cable, a clear silicone case, and standard documentation.

This comprehensive unboxing experience sets a positive tone right from the start.

Vivo T3X: Design and Display

Vivo T3X: Design and Display
Vivo T3X: Design

As mentioned, the Vivo T3X boasts a design that feels both fresh and familiar.

It features an ultra-slim, one-piece flat design that’s exceptionally light in the hand, considering it houses a substantial 6000mAh battery.

The “Crimson Bliss” and “Celestial Green” colour options add a touch of elegance, with each variant offering a unique aesthetic that stands out visually.

I have the latter of the two and I think it looks just wonderful to hold and feel.

However, the device does not stray far from the typical Vivo design language, which might seem a bit repetitive for those familiar with the brand.

Vivo T3X: Design and Display
Vivo T3X: Display

The 6.72-inch FHD+ display is impressive, with a high brightness of 1000 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring vivid and fluid visuals.

The TÜV Rheinland certification for low blue light emission is a thoughtful addition, enhancing viewing comfort.

There are features like an Always-on Display to contend with and the device does have a WideVine L1 certification for HD content.

Vivo T3X: Camera Capabilities

Vivo T3X: Camera Capabilities
Vivo T3X: Camera Capabilities

The Vivo T3X is equipped with a dual-camera setup, featuring a 50MP main camera and a 2MP depth sensor.

In daylight, the main camera captures sharp and detailed images with vibrant colours.

However, the absence of an ultra-wide lens limits the versatility of the camera setup, and the 2MP depth camera feels a bit pointless given how good AI-based image separation has truly become.

Nighttime photography is enhanced by the Super Night Algorithms, which improve clarity and reduce noise, although the results can sometimes appear over-processed.

In general, the images are endearing and are fit to be called an output from a budget offering.

Even so, using a flash in many scenarios would actually be more helpful.

Finally, you see the front-facing 8MP camera performs adequately for selfies and video calls, bolstered by features like Bokeh Flare Portrait mode, which adds a creative touch to photos.

Vivo T3X: Performance and Features

Vivo T3X: Performance and Features
Vivo T3X: Performance

Under the hood, the Vivo T3X is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, offering reliable performance across most tasks.

The chipset is now more popular with sub-Rs 20,000 phones with just recently the Realme P1 Pro also harbouring the same silicone.

There’s 8GB RAM to keep you company along with 128GB of internal storage.

The device performs as expected on benchmarking platforms and has little trouble with anything graphical-related unless it is something heavy-duty like BGMI.

The handset deliver an immersive audio experience with Dual Stereo Speakers enhanced by Audio Boosters, delivering a 300% increase in volume for a richer audio experience, and it’s backed by Hi-Res Audio Wired and Wireless Certification for superior sound quality.

Vivo T3X: Features

The side-mounted fingerprint sensor provides quick and reliable authentication. Apart from that the device also has no issues with running fast 5G connections.

The Vivo T3X operates on Vivo’s FunTouch OS based on Android 14, offering a sleek and user-friendly interface packed with customization options to enhance the user experience.

Features like Memory Booster and Interface Preserver contribute to smooth multitasking and efficient app management, allowing quick restoration to previous app states.

For multitaskers, the phone supports advanced features like split-screen and mini-window modes, greatly enhancing productivity by allowing users to handle multiple tasks simultaneously without a drop in performance.

However, the presence of bloatware remains a downside, cluttering the otherwise streamlined experience with unnecessary apps and intrusive notifications.

Finally, the 6000mAh battery with 44W fast charging provides excellent battery life, though it’s worth noting that the charging speed isn’t the fastest in this segment.

Vivo T3X: Final Thoughts

Vivo T3X: Final Thoughts
Vivo T3X: Final Thoughts

The Vivo T3X is a solid choice for those looking for a budget-friendly smartphone that doesn’t compromise on performance or features.

While it may not offer the best camera versatility or the fastest charging in its class, it excels in display quality, battery life, and overall usability.

It’s a commendable addition to Vivo’s lineup, ideal for users seeking a dependable everyday smartphone.

The Q1 2024 report revealed that Samsung has regained the top spot from Apple in terms of overall smartphone shipments.

However, this shift can be attributed more to a decline in Apple’s sales than an increase in Samsung’s shipments.

Samsung shipped 60.1 million total smartphones in Q1, a slight 0.7% decrease compared to the same quarter of 2023 when it shipped 60.5 million units.

In contrast, Apple’s Q1 2024 shipments of 50.1 million units represent a nearly 10% year-over-year decline.

Resurgence of Xiaomi and Transsion

While the top two players, Samsung and Apple, experienced negative growth in the first quarter, other brands witnessed significant gains.

Xiaomi made a strong comeback with a 33.8% increase in sales year-over-year, shipping 40.8 million units.

Transsion, on the other hand, nearly doubled its result in Q1, shipping an impressive 28.5 million units, up an incredible 84.9%.

According to Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, “As expected, smartphone recovery continues to move forward with market optimism slowly building among the top brands.”

He further added that while Samsung and Apple are expected to maintain their hold on the high-end market, the resurgence of Huawei in China and notable gains from Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and vivo will likely prompt the top OEMs to explore areas for expansion and diversification.

Nabila Popal, research director with IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team, highlighted two key trends emerging from the turbulence of the past two years: the growth in value and average selling prices (ASPs) as consumers opt for more expensive devices with longer lifespans, and a shift in power among the Top 5 companies, which is expected to continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world.

Elon Musk Announces Fee for New X Users to Combat Bots

0

Highlights

  • Musk plans a fee for new users on X to deter bots.
  • The fee will apply during the first three months for new accounts.
  • Cost-effective measure against spam, with specifics yet to be revealed.
  • Past trial with $1/year tier hints at ongoing anti-bot strategy.

Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), is looking to introduce a “small fee” for new users to post and engage on the platform.

In his words, this move is a direct response to a relentless onslaught of bots and spam accounts, which have been a persistent issue on the social media platform since before he had taken over complete control.

Combating Bots and Spam

In a post on X, Musk explained that charging a small fee for new accounts to post is “the only way to curb the relentless onslaught of bots.”

He argued that AI tools can easily bypass traditional “you’re a robot” tests, making it challenging to identify and prevent bot accounts from proliferating.

Fee and Subscription Details

While the specific amount of the fee has not been disclosed, Musk stated that a bot costs only a fraction of a penny, making it economically viable for malicious actors to create multiple bot accounts.

However, if X charges even a few dollars, the running costs for bot operators would become prohibitively high, deterring them from creating new bot accounts.

Additionally, Musk clarified that users who do not pay the fee upfront will still be able to post and engage on the platform for free after three months.

It looks like the fee may only apply to new users during their initial three months on the platform.

Evidence of Implementation

Code found within the X app has confirmed the possibility of implementing such a fee system.

It seems that new users may need to subscribe to unlock posting and engagement capabilities from the outset.

Previous Experiments and Efforts

The Technical Background
Musk plans a fee for new users on X to deter bots

Musk’s commitment to eradicating fake and bot accounts has been a key priority since his acquisition of Twitter in late 2022.

Last year, X experimented with a $1/year subscription tier called “Not A Bot” in the Philippines and New Zealand, potentially laying the groundwork for the upcoming fee system.

While the specifics and rollout timeline of this fee system remain unclear, Musk’s efforts to combat spam and ensure a more authentic user experience on X continue to evolve.

FAQs

What is Elon Musk’s rationale for introducing a fee for new users on X?

Elon Musk believes charging new users a small fee is necessary to counteract the rampant bot activity on X.

This strategy aims to make the creation of bot accounts economically unfeasible, thus protecting the platform from spam and ensuring a more genuine interaction among users.

How will the new fee on X affect bot activity according to Musk?

By imposing a fee, even a minimal one, the cost of operating bot accounts will increase significantly.

Musk suggests that this financial barrier will discourage the proliferation of bots, as it will no longer be cheap or easy to create and maintain multiple spam accounts.

Will all users have to pay to use X?

No, the fee will only be required for new users to post and engage during their first three months on the platform.

After this initial period, users can choose to continue without paying, although the specifics of what features will remain accessible without payment have not been fully detailed.

What evidence supports the implementation of a posting fee on X?

Code within the X app has been discovered that supports the integration of a subscription model for new users, indicating that the platform is preparing to enforce this fee to unlock certain features from the start.

Has X previously tested similar strategies to combat bots?

Yes, X launched a $1/year subscription tier called “Not A Bot” in the Philippines and New Zealand as a trial to mitigate bot activities.

This initiative was part of Musk’s broader efforts to ensure authenticity and reduce fake engagements on the platform.
