Spotify buys Podsights, Chartable podcast analytics firms: Know more about these acquisitions

0

In order to expand its business, popular music streaming platform Spotify has acquired two major podcast ad tech firms, Podsights and Chartable.

With the acquisition of Podsights, the Swedish company will reportedly be able to help advertisers understand how podcast ads drive actions that matter to their businesses. Podsights is a leading podcast advertising measurement service that helps advertisers better measure and scale their podcast advertising.

“We believe the opportunity for digital audio and podcast remains significant. With these acquisitions, we’re taking a big step in upleveling digital audio measurement and insights to help the entire industry scale to new heights,” the company said.

According to reports, Podsights’ team of around 40 full-time employees will join Spotify and the company says that it has no plans to adjust that team at this time.

On the other hand, Chartable is a podcast analytics platform that enables publishers to know and grow their podcast audiences through promotional attribution and audience insight tools.

Spotify has also revealed financial details related to these acquisitions. It will invest $100 million in the licensing, development and marketing of music and audio content from historically underrepresented creators, its CEO Daniel Ek said recently.

The company also reported its fourth quarter (Q4) results for 2021, taking its paid subscribers to 180 million globally. Monthly active users on the platform grew by 18 per cent (on-year) to reach 406 million.

It must be noted that advertising represented 15 per cent of Spotify’s revenue in the October-December quarter last year.

Interestingly, the development comes at a time when Spotify is facing backlash because of Joe Rogan’s podcast which critics say is spreading misinformation related to COVID-19. It has also led to several artists leaving the platform in protest.

Russia-Ukraine crisis: Cyber-attack, most common types and how to avoid

0

Even as the tensions between Russia and Ukraine refuse to die down, a series of cyber-attacks has knocked the websites of the Ukrainian army, the defense ministry and major banks. These attacks could be a smokescreen for a more serious and damaging cyber-threat. According to a report by news agency AP, at least 10 Ukrainian websites were unreachable due to the attacks, including the defense, foreign and culture ministries and Ukraine’s two largest state banks. In such attacks, websites are barraged with a flood of junk data packets, rendering them unreachable.

However, this is not the first time when Ukraine faced this sort of hybrid warfare as it had happened in 2017 too, when a series of powerful cyber-attacks using the Petya malware reportedly began on 27 June 2017 that swamped websites of Ukrainian organizations, including banks, ministries, newspapers and electricity firms.

cyber-attack-1

In the backdrop of these developments, let’s understand what exactly the cyber-attacks are, what are the common forms of cyber-attacks and how one should avoid them.

What is a Cyber-attack?

A cyber-attack is a malicious and deliberate attempt by an individual or organisation to disable computers, steal data, or use a breached computer system to launch additional attacks. Cybercriminals use different means to launch a cyber-attack that includes malware, phishing, ransomware, man-in-the-middle attack, or other methods. These sorts of attacks hit businesses every day. According to former Cisco CEO John Chambers, there are two types of companies: those that have been hacked, and those who don’t yet know they have been hacked.

Most common types of cyber-attacks (as per Cisco)

Malware: It’s a term used to describe malicious software, including spyware, ransomware, viruses, and worms. Malware breaches a network through vulnerability, typically when a user clicks a dangerous link or email attachment that then installs risky software. Once inside the system, malware can- block access to key components of the network (ransomware); install malware or additional harmful software; secretly obtains information by transmitting data from the hard drive (spyware); and disrupt certain components and renders the system inoperable.

Phishing: It’s the practice of sending fraudulent communications that appear to come from a reputable source, usually through email. The goal is to steal sensitive data like credit card and login information or to install malware on the victim’s machine. Phishing is an increasingly common cyber threat.

Man-in-the-middle attack: Also known as eavesdropping attacks, the Man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks occur when attackers insert themselves into a two-party transaction. Once the attackers interrupt the traffic, they can filter and steal data. There are two common types of entry for MitM attacks. 1). On unsecure public Wi-Fi, attackers can insert themselves between a visitor’s device and the network. Without knowing, the visitor passes all information through the attacker. 2). Once malware has breached a device, an attacker can install software to process all of the victim’s information.

Denial-of-service attack: A denial-of-service attack floods systems, servers, or networks with traffic to exhaust resources and bandwidth. As a result, the system is unable to fulfill legitimate requests. Attackers can also use multiple compromised devices to launch this attack. This is known as a distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

SQL injection: A Structured Query Language (SQL) injection occurs when an attacker inserts malicious code into a server that uses SQL and forces the server to reveal information it normally would not. An attacker could carry out a SQL injection simply by submitting malicious code into a vulnerable website search box.

Zero-day exploit: A zero-day exploit hits after a network vulnerability is announced but before a patch or solution is implemented. Attackers target the disclosed vulnerability during this window of time. Zero-day vulnerability threat detection requires constant awareness.

DNS Tunneling: It utilises the DNS protocol to communicate non-DNS traffic over port 53. It sends HTTP and other protocol traffic over DNS. There are various, legitimate reasons to utilize DNS tunneling. However, there are also malicious reasons to use DNS Tunneling VPN services. They can be used to disguise outbound traffic as DNS, concealing data that is typically shared through an internet connection. For malicious use, DNS requests are manipulated to exfiltrate data from a compromised system to the attacker’s infrastructure. It can also be used for command and control callbacks from the attacker’s infrastructure to a compromised system.

Cyber-attacks surge amid Covid-driven digitalization

According to World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2022, the accelerating pace of digitalisation, triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to a record-breaking year for cybercrime with ransomware attacks rising 151 per cent in 2021, and an average of 270 cyberattacks per organisation being faced. Each successful cyber breach cost a company USD 3.6 million (nearly Rs 27 crore) last year, while the average share price of the hacked company underperformed NASDAQ by nearly 3 per cent even six months after the event in case of the breach becoming public.

The study further said that the global digital economy surged on the back of the COVID-19 pandemic, but so has cybercrime and nearly 80 per cent of cyber leaders now consider ransomware a ‘danger’ and ‘threat’ to public safety. At the same time, there is a large perception gap between business executives who think their companies are secure and security leaders who disagree. Even after a threat is detected, the study found that nearly two-thirds would find it challenging to respond to a cybersecurity incident due to the shortage of skills within their team. Even more troubling is the growing trend that companies need 280 days on average to identify and respond to a cyber-attack. To put this into perspective, an incident that occurs on January 1, may not be fully contained until October 8.

Effective solutions to cyber-attacks

With cybersecurity being as important as ever, it is imperative that we adopt the right set of tools. This is an effective way to create a secured infrastructure and processes. It is also important to carry out regular assessments and gap identification, in order to protect your devices and personal information on different platforms, from falling prey to cyber criminals. Here’s a list of what to do to secure yourself in the cyber world.

  1. You must update the software of your device on a regular basis. Set your installed Windows and applications to automatic software update and they will notify you as soon as they become available, which will safeguard you from vulnerabilities.
  2. You must use multi-factor authentication. It is an authentication method that requires the user to provide two or more verification factors to gain access to an application or an online account, like a temporary code on a smartphone or a key that’s inserted into a computer.
  3. One must backup all important files offline to an external hard drive, or to a secure cloud service.
  4. Don’t leave your devices unattended in public places. Always use complex passwords for all laptops, tablets and smartphones to login.
  5. You must encrypt devices such as laptops, smartphones, removable drives and cloud storage solutions as well as other documents containing sensitive personal information.
  6. Securing your router is a must. Change the default name and password and ensure you turn off remote management feature and remember to log out of the router. It’s recommended to set up router with WPA2 or WPA3 encryption.
  7. You should use legitimate/licensed software and employ antivirus and anti-malware protection applications on your electronic devices.

Online Gaming: mFilterIt releases key threats to watch out for

As India’s eSports segment grows exponentially, this expansion is majorly attributed to the rapid digitalization that has occurred in recent years. eSport, as an ecosystem, has a much larger economic potential and is expected to generate around INR 100 billion in economic value between now and FY2025. Now with the government’s clear vision and setting up of a task force to recommend steps for promotion of animation, visual effects, gaming, and comic (AVGC) sector in the Budget 22-23, the gaming industry has come to a forefront.

As the Indian gaming industry embarks on a growth journey, it’s also crucial to be aware of the threats of online gaming. mFilterIt today released a set of threats involving various digital frauds that the gamers must keep in mind before stepping into the arena as the threat of fraud remain high.

Amit Relan, Co-Founder and Director of ‘mFilterIt’ said, “According to a recent 2021 Ernst & Young Report, India’s eSports business grew to INR 3 billion in FY2021 and is predicted to increase up to INR 11 billion by FY2025. The government also recognized the growth and employment opportunity in the AVGC sector by announcing an AVGC promotion task force to build domestic capacity. The gamers are focused on achieving a specific level of success, whether it is through tournament participation, gaining top positions in games, or other means. Unfortunately, this puts them exposed to an increasing number of digital scams. We at mFilterIt, want to bring the threat to the gamers on the surface and offer a way to prevent themselves from frauds and online predators by generating awareness.”

Following are the enumerated ways identified by mFilterIt, that are used by fraudsters to target the online gaming community, the awareness around these threats is the key to avoiding getting trapped by scammers, the key threats are as follows:

In-app purchases cause gamers to lose real money

With the growing use of gaming smartphones, even if, four out of ten players in India make an in-app purchase, it translates to hundreds of millions of dollars spent on games each year. Account takeover fraud of a gaming ID means losing real money for gamers who wish to play a fair game. In-app purchases are costing gamers real money.

In-app purchases

According to a new report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the Indian gaming market is projected to hit $3.9 billion (in value) by 2025, and over 40 percent of hardcore gamers are paying for their games with an average spend of Rs 230 per month.

Rising cases of cyberbullying in gaming

Digital fraudsters are highly capable of tracking down minors with compromised accounts. This might result in harassment through exploitative ways such as demanding a ransom in exchange for the account status being restored.

cyberbullying in gaming

According to Akamai Technologies research, the gaming industry was subjected to 12 billion cyberattacks between November 2017 and March 2019. Children usually fail to disclose or report a problem to their parents, which can have serious implications, including emotional and mental distress.

Breach of data privacy and cyber attacks

Children below 14-15 years, use their parent’s smartphones to play games occasionally. This may lead to data breaches of the mobile owners. The mobiles carrying more serious and confidential information including banking details, official documents, personal images, etc. are likely at a higher risk. The fraudster could also get access to Google or other OS account details and get access to the entire device including data and other applications on the smartphone.

Cyber-attack

According to the Norton Cyber Safety Report: Gaming & Cybercrime 2021, three out of every four gamers in India have been victims of a cyberattack at some point. Aside from the cash loss, about 35% of the victims, claimed to have malicious software installed on their gaming devices because of a cyber-attack, and 29% of the victims discovered that their online gaming account had been hacked.

Account Takeovers (ATO)

Passionate gamers work hard and play a fair game to reach a certain level in the game, to be considered as a professional which can make them eligible for awards and entry to tournaments. Account takeover or ATO is a major issue in paid and subscription-based online services such as eCommerce, OTT, and now eSports. While eCommerce and OTT apps interface with adults who could still be difficult to break into, eSports gives fraudsters an easy playfield as it will mostly have children on the other side.

The gaming industry must collaborate with ATO anti-fraud solution makers to proactively stop this wildfire so that children of tender age could be saved from experiencing the dark side of digital at an early age where they cannot handle it.

Beyond the gamers, what’s the impact?

These frauds also adversely impact the game. For beginners, there’s the matter of brand reputation and infringement. Many websites and apps have been established using the logos and other identifiers of such games. This is a case of infringement, and the website or app owner might run anything as irrelevant and explicit as pornographic material on their app. This could be detrimental to the company’s reputation.

Also, there would be a large number of inactive accounts if a fraudster hijacks a legitimate account and drains all of its funds. The account will no longer be operational, but the user will remain active. This will artificially expand the user base without providing a commensurate ARPU. Thus, lowering the revenue potential and other crucial metrics used by investors and lenders.
