The Google Pixel 7a is one of the best budget phones you can get right now. Launched at I/O 2023, the device packs a handful of upgrades from its predecessor, including a beefed-up 90Hz display refresh rate.

While this still pales in comparison to the 120Hz displays on phones like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, it’s a decent addition on a sub-$500 phone. However, the display on the Pixel 7a may not be operating as intended, especially in sunny conditions, as per one Reddit user.

Redditor pawlikx_iron noticed the 90Hz refresh rate comes down to 60Hz when in broad daylight, adding that it goes back up to 90Hz when they are under shade. This implies a correlation between sunlight exposure and the lowering of the device’s refresh rate.

Sunny conditions naturally make the phone hot, with one individual in the comments suggesting that the drop in the refresh rate could be due to the Pixel 7a’s built-in thermal throttling mechanism.
However, the affected user claims their Pixel 7a feels “cool, not hot.” Google is yet to comment on this behavior.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean you can never use your Pixel 7a in sunny conditions. As one user points out in the replies, all you need to do is head over to Developer options from your Pixel 7a’s Settings and toggle Force peak refresh rate.

Google launched the Pixel 7a smartphone in India last month, its affordable offering from its flagship Pixel series.

According to a Redditor pawlikx_iron (via Android Police), the Pixel 7a’s screen automatically switches to 60Hz from 90Hz when outdoors. This happens even when the temperature outside isn’t hot, and it goes back to 90Hz when the user is under the shade.
The Pixel 7a’s display has a refresh rate up to 90Hz, which switches to 60Hz depending on the phone’s usage and power management.

If the temperature outside is hot, then it would make sense for the Pixel 7a to automatically drop the refresh rate to 60Hz. This is because a higher refresh rate leads to more battery consumption.

But this wasn’t the case for this Pixel 7a user. It isn’t clear yet why this happens but it could be due to outdoor brightness affecting the phone’s display.

This might also not affect many users, except for those who are deeply concerned about the scrolling experience on their Pixel 7a. And for such users who wish to have this, then they can make some adjustments. This is by setting 90Hz as the default refresh rate setting for the Pixel 7a from the Developer options, and turn on ‘Force peak refresh rate’.

It was recently revealed that the Pixel 7a uses a less efficient version of the Tensor G2 chipset — which can cause the phone to run hotter than other Pixel 7 devices. So it’s possible Google has taken a more proactive stance to ensure the Pixel 7a’s temperature stays as stable as possible.
Shortly after launch users noted that the Pixel 4 was having issues maintaining a 90Hz refresh rate — and the problem was lighting conditions. Setting the screen brightness below 75% caused a dip to 60hz, except in conditions with sufficient ambient lighting, with Google noting this was a power-saving move. Shortly after this news broke Google released updates to ensure 90hz was available in more lighting conditions.

It’s not clear whether Google will do anything similar with the Pixel 7a, but there is something you can do about it at home. As one Reddit user points out, heading into Developer options will reveal an option to Force peak refresh rate. That should force your phone to stick to 90Hz in all conditions, though you should be aware that excess heat will affect power efficiency and could damage your battery over time.

Developer options are hidden by default, but it can be revealed by heading to Settings > About phone > tapping Build number seven times and entering your PIN. You can then find the Developer options menu in the System menu of the settings, or by searching for it.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE has been rumoured to be in the works since the launch of the Galaxy S23 series earlier this year, but there’s no official confirmation from the company yet. It appears the phone will launch in the coming months.

According to SmartPrix, in collaboration with tipster OnLeaks, the Galaxy S23 FE may feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC instead of an Exynos SoC. The publication has also leaked the phone’s renders, likely based on a prototype.

It has been revealed that iQOO would launch the Neo 7 Pro smartphone in Dark Storm and Fearless Frame colour options. Amazon India has revealed the renders of the smartphone in both colour options.

The Fearless Flame variant will feature a leatherette back panel. Mukul Sharma also added that the company would launch the device in 8GB RAM with 128GB storage.

The company would also launch the device in 12GB RAM with 256GB storage. Previously, iQOO had revealed that it would equip the device with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC.

The chipset has ARM Cortex-X2, Cortex-A710 and Cortex-A510 cores. The flagship SoC from Qualcomm will pair with Adreno 730 GPU. iQOO also adds that the device will feature an Independent Gaming (IG) chipset.

The upcoming Neo 7 Pro will also feature a Motion Control feature similar to the vanilla Neo 7 device. In another tweet, the company confirmed the device would support 120W fast charging tech.

iQOO claims the device can charge up to 50% in under 7 minutes. The reports reveal that iQOO would price the device between Rs 38,000 and Rs 43,000.

Previously, it was revealed that iQOO would rebrand Neo 7 Racing Edition as Neo 7 Pro in India. iQOO is likely to equip the device with a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution. The display will have a refresh rate of 120Hz and a centred punch-hole for the selfie camera.

The flat display will have thin bezels on all sides. Previously, the GeekBench listing of the smartphone had revealed that the device would run on Funtouch OS 13 based on Android 13 out of the box.

The smartphone will feature a triple-rear camera setup with a 50MP primary camera with OIS support. The sensor will be paired with 8MP ultra-wide-angle and 2MP macro lenses.
The punch-hole in the display will feature a 16MP selfie camera.

The device would be backed by a large 5000mAh battery. The AMOLED display will feature an in-In-display fingerprint scanner.

Customers can even exchange defunct home appliances like televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines.

The aim of the program is to not only help customers get rid of their dead devices but also reduce e-waste at the same time. This is the reason Flipkart has teamed up with authorised vendors for the safe handling of e-waste. From the customer’s perspective, they can now give their non-working devices to the company instead of throwing them away along with other garbage or looking for a relevant buyer themselves.

Another good thing is Flipkart is even offering exchange value for defunct devices offered by the user. It is currently unknown what value will be provided and what would be the criteria for finalizing the exchange value. The company will also take care of device pickup which is specifically beneficial in the case of heavy appliances.
Flipkart says defunct devices will get refurbished, recycled, or disposed of based on their condition. The first priority of the team will be to check if it can be refurbished. If not, the device will be checked for recycling process and at last for proper and responsible disposal.

What the new exchange program offers

Flipkart reveals that the new exchange program is designed to address the concerns of customers who find it challenging to dispose of their non-functional appliances. With this program, Flipkart aims to offer a hassle-free process of disposing inoperative appliances to its customers. Along with this, the exchange program will also offer an exchange value that can be used to purchase an upgraded product.
With this exchange program Flipkart also aims to reduce electronic waste generated by improper disposal. Depending on the condition of the defunct product, it will be refurbished, recycled, or disposed of responsibly by authorised vendors.

Ashutosh Singh Chandel, senior director & business head, Re-Commerce at Flipkart, said, “India is the third largest e-waste generator in the world (with 3.2 million tonnes in 2019); however, only 10 percent of the waste is collected for recycling, as per MEITY policy paper (source) which necessitates the shift to a more circular approach for the sector. With the new exchange program for non-functional appliances, we want to provide our customers with an innovative, sustainable, and convenient solution to discard unused electronic and large appliances and upgrade to a product they aspire to have. Apart from benefitting our valued customers, this program will act as a catalyst to transition to a circular economy and reduce the impact on the environment.”
