Apple and Samsung Gear Up for Foldable iPhone, Release Slated for 2026

Highlights

  • Samsung Display to collaborate with Apple on a foldable iPhone screen.
  • Foldable iPhone expected to launch in 2026, debunking earlier rumors.
  • Apple also rumored to work on a 20.3-inch high-end foldable device.
  • Potential for foldable iPad or MacBook prior to iPhone release.

There have been many rumours lately about a possible foldable iPhone from Apple, even though we’ve been hearing gossip and leaks about this dream device for years.

Neowin reported that Samsung and Apple have made a deal for Samsung Display to work with Apple on a foldable display.

We had reported this same rumour back in December last year about the elusive iPhone Flip.

Samsung Making Apple’s Foldable

Samsung Display has been Apple’s main partner for making displays for iPhones and laptops.

The December leak hinted that LG Display was also working on parts for an Apple foldable, including a 20.25-inch foldable MacBook.

The latest news suggests that a foldable iPhone will not arrive until 2026, much later than the current rumours of later this year or possibly 2025.

These leaks, which should be taken with a pinch of salt, come from industry experts related to the supply chain.

It’s been reported that Apple is working on two different foldable devices.

One is the long-rumoured iPhone Flip, which would compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

The iPhone Flip has been rumoured for so long that other companies like Samsung have released multiple foldable devices already.

No Date For Foldable iPhone

Display analyst Ross Young suggests a 2024 release for a foldable iPhone. He is usually reliable with such tips.

However, a foldable iPhone has reached the level of myth-making like Half-Life 3.

We might see a foldable iPad or MacBook before a foldable iPhone. Based on rumours, we’re leaning more towards a foldable iPad, but Apple could always surprise us.

As tipped by analyst Jeff Pu, Apple is allegedly working on a 20.3-inch foldable device aimed at the high-end market in 2025.

We expect it will probably be priced somewhere between a MacBook Pro and the Vision Pro headset, if true.

FAQs

Is Apple working on other foldable devices besides the iPhone?

Yes, rumors suggest Apple could also be developing a foldable iPad or MacBook, with hints at a large 20.3-inch foldable device aimed at the high-end market by 2025.

How does Apple’s foldable iPhone compare to existing products?

Apple’s anticipated iPhone Flip would compete directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, which has already seen multiple versions released.

What are the implications of Apple’s move into foldable technology?

Apple’s exploration of foldable devices indicates a potential shift in their product strategy, aiming to expand their high-end device offerings and compete in new device categories.

ROG Ally X

Highlights

  • Massive battery capacity increase for extended gaming sessions.
  • Features over 16GB of RAM and upgradable 2280 M.2 SSD storage.
  • Retains the powerful AMD Z1 Extreme chip for high performance.
  • Enhanced design with modular joystick components and sleek black colour option.

Just one year after launching their first handheld gaming PC, the ROG Ally, ASUS is preparing to release an enhanced version dubbed the ROG Ally X.

This next-generation portable gaming machine is slated to debut on June 2nd, packing a host of upgrades and improvements over its predecessor. Here’s a glimpse at what gamers can expect from the Ally X.

Battery Life Boosted to New Heights

One of the standout enhancements is a massive increase in battery capacity. According to ASUS SVP Shawn Yen, who was interviewed by The Verge, the Ally X won’t just offer 30-40% more juice – we’re talking “way more than that.”

This substantial battery upgrade directly addresses a common pain point for handheld devices, whose batteries often struggle with intensive gaming sessions.

Yen acknowledged ASUS took note of users strapping bulky external batteries to the original Ally to extend play time, prompting them to supersize the Ally X’s battery.

More RAM, Storage Upgradability

In addition to outlasting its predecessor, the Ally X will pack more than 16GB of RAM for smoother performance with demanding games.

It will also feature an upgradable 2280 M.2 SSD, allowing users to easily expand storage capacity down the line. The upgraded internals may come at a higher price point compared to the original Ally.

Beyond the under-the-hood boosts, the Ally X’s design is getting some polish too. A sleek black colour option is on the way, and ASUS is aiming to improve reparability with modular, interchangeable joystick components. The larger battery will likely make the console slightly heavier than the previous model.

While the Ally X integrates many hardware enhancements, ASUS has opted to stick with the potent AMD Z1 Extreme chip that powered the original. This diverges from Valve’s approach of co-developing a custom AMD “Aerith” APU for the Steam Deck.

Both new and existing Ally owners will benefit from ASUS’ updated Armoury Crate SE 1.5 software. Touted as more intuitive, it offers improved game library layouts, search filters, sorting tools and a new light mode UI option among other refinements.

The Ally X was recently teased in an image on X, showing the black handheld PC tucked neatly into a cabinet. ASUS is definitely building hype around this supercharged refresh of their portable gaming platform. Let’s see what the company can actually deliver.

The ROG Ally X boasts significant improvements including a larger battery, more RAM, upgradable storage, and enhanced design features like modular joystick components for better repairability.

The ROG Ally X is set to launch on June 2. Details on where it will be available for purchase are expected to be announced closer to the release date.

What makes the battery upgrade in the ROG Ally X standout?

Unlike typical handhelds, the ROG Ally X offers a substantial increase in battery capacity, addressing common issues gamers face with battery life during intense gaming sessions.

For users who work in highly reflective display environments, Apple has a specialized solution in store: the nano-texture display glass option.

Similar to the Pro Display XDR, this feature reduces reflections, so the view is optimum.

But this option does compromise a little on contrast and sharpness, so this would be a tradeoff based on individual requirements.

So is it Worth it?

With prices starting at Rs 99,900 for the 11-inch model and Rs 1,29,900 for the 13-inch variant in India, the M4 iPad Pro undoubtedly carries a premium price tag.

  • Expected to integrate with Microsoft Bing, enhancing OpenAI’s rivalry with Google.
  • Faced with challenges of accuracy and currency in delivering search results.

Reports say OpenAI’s supposedly new search product would pit the company against Google’s very long dominance in leveraging the power of its ChatGPT language model.

As per Reuters, the service will offer contextual answers from users’ search queries, collating and synthesizing information from many web sources, including news articles, blog posts, and Wikipedia entries, for instance.

The search engine is also expected to include images when relevant to the user’s question.

Very little detail has been provided, but it’s believed that OpenAI’s search tool will at least be partly powered by Microsoft’s Bing search engine, adding further to the rivalry with Alphabet’s Google and other major players like Perplexity.

The domain search.chatgpt.com has seen some activity as of late which has fueled more speculation about OpenAI’s plans of a search functionality integrated with its popular ChatGPT language model.

Still, that doesn’t mean OpenAI doesn’t have some hurdles to overcome in launching into the search engine market.

Still Work To Be Done

Critics have pummeled ChatGPT for outputting old or incorrect information when tasked with retrieving web content.

Overcoming this and being able to deliver accurate, up-to-date search results will be the keys to OpenAI’s success in this highly competitive market.

Meanwhile, Google has been actively bolstering its AI capabilities, rapidly improving its Gemini AI models, chatbot, and the Search Generative Experience (SGE) currently being tested with “Labs” users.

The tech giant’s vast experience and resources in the search domain position it as a formidable competitor, raising the stakes for OpenAI’s ambitious endeavour.

  • Features a 6.67-inch OLED display with 2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.
  • Supports a 5,000mAh battery with 120W fast charging.

Manufacturers often rebrand and repurpose smartphones to sell them in different markets, and it appears that Xiaomi could be following such a course with its upcoming Poco F6 Pro.

Recent evidence, in the form of a public update for the unreleased phone, shows that the Poco F6 Pro having a codename Vermeer.

As it so happens the Redmi K70, a smartphone announced in China last November, also had the same codename.

The “Vermeer” codename in multiple certification listings further supports this, as Xiaomi does not reuse codenames on different models.

There is every likelihood that the F6 Pro is announced in the markets around the world bearing the K70’s specs.

Luckily we have a good idea about the K70’s specs since it has already been in China for a while now.

Obviously, the Poco F6 Pro’s pricing and availability remain unknown, but its potential positioning as a rebranded Redmi K70 allows us to guestimate the price at about Rs 30,000 or so.

We’ll see when the device comes.

POCO F6 Pro: Potential Specs

Equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset for peak performance

The recently launched Poco X6 Pro borrowed a lot from the Redmi K70E but with some compromises in battery capacity and charging speed.

This could not be the case for the Poco F6 Pro, which can be an identical twin of the Redmi K70.

If the rumors are correct, then the Poco F6 Pro will have pretty impressive specs.

It is said to feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which guarantees top performance.

The device will likely have a 6.67-inch OLED display with a 2K resolution, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and HDR/Dolby Vision standards support.

In the camera department, the Poco F6 Pro is rumoured to inherit the Redmi K70’s triple rear camera setup, consisting of a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP macro module.

A 16MP front-facing camera is also expected.

One of the standout features could be its massive 5,000mAh battery with support for 120W fast charging, ensuring users can quickly top up their device and stay connected on the go.

The Poco F6 Pro is likely to run on the latest Android 14 operating system, potentially with Xiaomi’s HyperOS skin on top.

Connectivity options are expected to include 5G, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a USB-C port, and NFC.

Apple Apologises for Controversial iPad Pro Ad Amid Creative Community Backlash

Apple Apologises for Controversial iPad Pro Ad Amid Creative Community Backlash

Highlights

  • Apple pulls the “Crush” ad for the new iPad Pro featuring OLED displays and M4 chips.
  • The ad showed creative tools being crushed, offending many in the creative community.
  • Prominent creatives like Hugh Grant criticized the ad for being insensitive.
  • Apple issues an apology and removes the ad from TV, though it remains online.

Apple has just released its new, very upgraded iPad Pro models with OLED displays and a powerful M4 chip.

To promote those tablets, Apple released an ad that rubbed the creative community the wrong way.

The ad, titled “Crush,” shows different creative tools—guitars, pianos, and pieces of art—getting crushed by a hydraulic press.

Apple’s Ad Rubs Creators the Wrong Way

The idea was to suggest the iPad Pro can replace those traditional creative mediums.

Many artists and creators took offense to their tools being destroyed in such a manner.

Prominent creatives like Hugh Grant criticized the ad for being insensitive
Prominent creatives like Hugh Grant criticized the ad for being insensitive

Since the new iPad Pro tablets use OLED screens rather than LCD screens, there is no need for a backlight, and Apple could make the thinnest product it has ever built.

The 11-inch iPad Pro comes in at 5.3mm, while the larger 13-inch is an even more svelte 5.1mm.

Famous creatives such as actor Hugh Grant and director Reed Morano openly criticized the ad for being insensitive to artists.

The backlash made it clear Apple’s marketing missed the mark with the target audience.

In response, Apple has issued an apology.

The company’s VP of marketing Tor Myhren admitted they “missed the mark with this video” and that the goal is always to empower and celebrate creativity through the iPad.

Despite the apology, Apple has decided to pull the controversial ad from TV broadcasts.

Here’s his full statement:

“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world. Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”

There’s no denying that the iPad Pro is highly capable.

However, its promotion, as evidenced by outrage on social media, alienated the very creatives it wanted to appeal to.

Apple usually is spot on with is marketing but looks like going ahead it might want to re-evaluate its marketing strategies through more dialogue with the creative community.

The other side of the coin is that people are reading too much into what was a harmless ad.

Apple CEO Tim Cook shared the ad on X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube on Tuesday.

According to Ad Age, the spot is still available online but will not be broadcast on TV.

The ad showed creative tools being crushed, offending many in the creative community

Producer Asif Kapadia pointed out how tech giants often benefit from artists’ work without giving them fair compensation. “Like iPads but don’t know why anyone thought this ad was a good idea. It is the most honest metaphor for what tech companies do to the arts, to artists, musicians, creators, writers, filmmakers: squeeze them, use them, not pay well, take everything then say it’s all created by them,” he posted on X.

In a story for THR, senior features editor Julian Sancton agreed with those sentiments.

“Indeed, at a time of bipartisan skepticism about tech and its destructive effects on society — and, in the case of generative AI, its callous disregard for human creators — it seems designed to offend as many people as possible,” Sancton wrote about the ad.

Sancton added: “All of that destruction, it seems, is meant to promote the release of … a new, extra thin iPad, revealed when the clamps open back up. You can imagine the pitch: ‘All of human creation compressed into one impossibly sleek tablet.’ But the end result feels more like: ‘All of human creation sacrificed for a lifeless gadget.’”

“Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created, the most advanced display we’ve ever produced, with the incredible power of the M4 chip. Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create,” Cook wrote.

“I can’t relate to this video at all. It lacks any respect for creative equipment and mocks the creators,” wrote one person.

Posted another: “Crushing symbols of human creativity and cultural achievements to appeal to pro creators, nice. Maybe for the next Apple Watch Pro you should crush sports equipment, show a robot running faster than a man, then turn to the camera and say, ‘God is dead and we have killed him.’”

Premium Smartphones Gain More Popularity in India for Q1 2024: Counterpoint

Highlights

  • 71% of recent smartphone shipments in India were 5G-enabled.
  • Apple and Samsung dominate as premium smartphone leaders.
  • Average selling price of Samsung Galaxy phones rises to $425.
  • OnePlus sees a decline in popularity as pricing increases.

A recent report by Counterpoint indicates that Indian consumers are shifting towards buying more premium and expensive models of smartphones.

It would appear that people are on the lookout for heavy-end devices that will be able to handle gaming, high performance and capture quality pictures with greater quality.

Commenting on the market dynamics, Research Analyst Shubham Singh said, “The onset of 2024 brought a promising start for OEMs, with better inventory levels allowing them to fill channels with multiple new launches. However, sales were less than expected due to a drop in retail footfalls and a section of consumers cutting down on discretionary spending.

During the quarter, vivo captured the top spot by volume for the first time ever, with a 19% share driven by its 5G leadership and CMF (Color, Material, Finish) positioning, along with strong imaging capabilities. Key OEMs focused on diversifying their channel strategies during the quarter, which led to growth in shipments in offline channels, with inventory building up by the end of the quarter.”

Commenting on the market value dynamics, Senior Research Analyst Shilpi Jain said, “During the quarter, India’s smartphone market reached its highest ever Q1 value. The growth was driven by the strengthening trend of premiumization, with consumers upgrading to higher-value smartphones across price tiers.

According to Counterpoint’s Consumer Lens survey, more than one-third of mid-tier consumers are willing to upgrade to the premium segment. Factors driving this trend include affordable financing schemes, better value for trade-ins, and bundled schemes, along with the demand for top-tier features such as AI, gaming, and imaging enhancements.

With a one-fourth share, Samsung led the market in terms of value. Also, at ~$425, Samsung’s ASP was its highest ever, driven by its leading position in the >INR 20,000 segment. This can be attributed to a stronger mix of its newly launched Galaxy S24 series due to its features such as GenAI, and the newly revamped A series, along with the increasing popularity of Samsung’s financing schemes.

Apple also had a record quarter in India in terms of value, leading the premium segment both in value and volume terms, driven by the latest iPhone 15 series, especially in offline channels.”

The adaptation of 5G is also growing in the country.

According to Counterpoint, 71% of shipments in the latest quarter were 5G-enabled.

This also goes hand in hand with the rise in premium phones.

Shilpi Jain, an analyst at Counterpoint, said “In the latest quarter, the Indian smartphone market reached its highest ever value for the first three months of the year. This growth was driven by more consumers upgrading to higher-priced, premium smartphones across all price segments.”

The average selling price for a Samsung Galaxy phone is now around $425 as per the report or about Rs 35,000, which is higher than ever before.

Strong sales of the Galaxy S24 series might have something to do with that as it highlighted generative AI as a key feature.

Samsung’s more affordable Galaxy A-series phones are also performing very well although the numbers are not disclosed.

Surprisingly OnePlus is a noticeable absentee in the list.

It would seem that there is dwindling interest in the company that was once top of the charts as fast premium offerings are considered.

It could likely stem from the ever increasing pricing on OnePlus’ top-end models and its diversification into a more budget segment with the Nord series.

Among other brands, Vivo captured the top spot with a 19% share by volume.

Nothing saw the fastest growth of 144% year-on-year, mainly driven by its mid-range Nothing 2(a) smartphone model.

Xiaomi shipments grew 28% year-on-year.

Transsion brands and Realme saw 20% and 18% annual growth, respectively, according to Counterpoint.
