Bullitt and MediaTek to Make Satellite-to Mobile Messaging a Reality

Smartphones have become an indelible part of our lives in the past decade or so because they’ve come a long way from being a mere mode of convenience where you can just talk or send/receive messages.

When it comes to messaging, the SMS had come as a huge change from constantly talking hours on call to simply sending a short message to the other person.

SMS has long become obsolete where now we have WhatsApp messaging service where you can also make video calls with a person sitting thousands of miles away, which will also go out of synchronization very soon with the change of times.

Now, the latest news is that the first smartphone to feature two-way satellite messaging technology is under work as Bullitt and MediaTek have joined hands to make this dream a reality.

There are strong rumours that this undisclosed smartphone will be launched very soon in the first three months or Q1 of 2023 for which Bullitt will be the manufacturer, while MediaTek will develop the chipset, which will be a 3GPP non-terrestrial (NTN) model.

Bullitt Mediatek

Bullitt has made it clear recently that OTT satellite service and smartphone will be available at a commercial level during the first few months of 2023, for which it has been working with MediaTek to develop the technology for the past 18 months or so.

The next generation of 5G smartphones is being worked upon for which Bullitt is planning direct satellite communications technology, while the OTT satellite service will be coming with a new satellite SOS feature for which you can get a 12 month free of charge from the purchase date.

What’s more, MediaTek has already revealed that the world’s first ever 5G NTN smartphone communication technology had been tested in August 2022, where it was made clear that satellites would provide connectivity to all consumer devices.

Summary

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro has received many positive remarks from laymen users but it was quite surprising when Nothing Phone CEO, Carl Pei, revealed that he was using iPhone 14 Pro as a secondary handset and shared his views on it.

Nothing Phone and Myntra Join Hands

Highlights

  • Nothing CEO Carl Pei said he uses the iPhone 14 Pro as his secondary phone.
  • Pei praised the iPhone but said the Dynamic Island feature is ‘overhyped’.
  • He said that Nothing Phone (1) and iPhone 14 Pro designs aren’t completely similar.

Carl Pei Gives His Opinion on iPhone 14 Pro

How many times have you heard of a smartphone company’s CEO using a rival company’s handset, even though the rival is a big tech giant like Apple? The same has happened this time around when Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing Phones, shared that he uses iPhone 14 Pro as a secondary handset.

It was quite shocking for many users to know that Carl Pei, erstwhile CEO of the recently launched Nothing Phones, has been using an Apple smartphone, due to which many of them became curious to know his opinions on the model as they felt it is difficult to find such an example nowadays.

When asked to give a review of the smartphone, Pei felt that iPhone 14 Pro was better than his Nothing Phone (1) when it came to taking better photos, which is why he switched to it for doing so, but called the Dynamic island feature overrated and overhyped, while speaking positively on its cameras.

Carl Pei Nothing CEO

Pei claimed that he was happy with the design as he called the dynamic notch a smart design choice, even though he felt it was overhyped, as the communication process remains the same.

Mr.Pei also expressed his disappointment when suggested that Nothing Phone (1) was similar in design and features to iPhone 14 Pro, claiming that it irritated him to no end whenever people said this, even though he acknowledged that the button placement and flat sides of both handsets was similar.

As mentioned above, Pei has greatly praised the camera quality of iPhone 14 Pro and advised customers to go for it over Nothing Phone (1) if they were looking for the best picture quality, while he has also praised iMessage as his favourite messaging app in the past.

To praise a rival brand is not easy and it definitely shows the modesty of Carl Pei for openly praising iPhone 14 Pro and its features, while also recommending users to go for it as he felt that its camera quality outshined that of Nothing Phone (1).

Nokia G11 Plus Review

0
Nokia G11 Plus Review

Nokia G11 Plus is the improved version of a previous Nokia smartphone named G11. The brand had a relatively hushed launch of G11 Plus earlier this year, which surprises no one when it comes to Nokia. Designed quite evidently for the entry-level smartphone segment, G11 Plus appears pretty decent on the specification sheet. As a brand, Nokia now is known for its robust designs and reliable user experience. So, let’s find out how well the Nokia G11 Plus fairs in those and other important parameters in our Nokia G11 Plus review.

Nokia G11 Plus – Unboxing

The Nokia G11 Plus box design is a standard one that highlights the three years of security updates on the side along with some basic specifications in quick detail at the back of the box.  Inside the box, you get the handset, SIM ejection pin, product safety and other booklets in various languages, a see-through jelly case cover (this will mostly be depended on the region you purchase your device from), a power adapter, and USB-C to USB-A charging cable. The box also contains a not-so-impressive pair of headsets, which in all honesty are nowhere close to the quality you might expect from a brand like Nokia.

The handset comes with a pre-applied screen protector. So, while you remove the sticker with device key features printed from the smartphone screen, make sure you do not remove the screen protector from underneath.

Nokia G11 Plus Review

Design – Slim, Sleek and Super Tough

In the design department, Nokia G11 Plus has managed to fair well. The front of the smartphone comes with nice chunky bezels all around giving a perfect finish around the screen. On the right,  we have the volume rocker keys and the power key while the left side houses the dual SIM slot and SD card slots. You can use two SIM cards as well as a micro SD slot to expand the memory.

Furthermore, it looks like Nokia with this handset decided to remove the dedicated Google Assistant Button from the left side. On the top, there is the 3.5 mm headphone jack and on the bottom, there’s the USB C cable and a microphone hole. The back of the G11 Plus is quite busy comparatively speaking. We have a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 2-megapixel depth sensor and also an LED flashlight.  Moreover, There’s also a fingerprint scanner located in the middle of the device. And then we have a loudspeaker located near the bottom.

Recommended Reads: Nokia selected by Bharti Airtel

The whole device is built with polycarbonate plastic and has IP52 water-resistant grading. However, when you hold the device in your hands, it feels quite solid and doesn’t have the cheap finish that some of the same material smartphone bodies usually suffer from. The back has a well-textured finish even though in hand feels smooth. The camera plate in this one, unlike the Nokia G11, isn’t glossy which prevents it from getting unnecessary scratches easily.

6.5” HD+ Display – For Entertainment and Smoother Performance

Nokia G11 Plus Review

Nokia G11 Plus comes with a 6.5 inch IPS LCS high definition plus display with 720 x 1600 resolution with a waterdrop notch. Promising much smoother touch interactions, the display has a 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz touch sampling rate (which only works with supported apps/scenarios). The display also comes with a pixel density of 270ppi. The display in the first couple of uses appears to be perfect for an everyday smartphone experience. The scrolling, swiping and sharing through the device is smoother.

The one thing that we liked about the display of the smartphone is the narrow bezels and the chin-notch. These give the smartphone a premium-looking 89.06% of the screen-to-body ratio.

50 Megapixel AI Powered Camera

Nokia here packed a dual-rear camera setup with a 50-megapixel main camera AF (f/1.8) and 2-megapixel depth sensor FF, supported with an LED flash and autofocus functionality. It further sports an 8-megapixel front camera for video chats and selfies. Even though a 50-megapixel camera sounds like a great lens, we have to realise that this is a budget-friendly device. And thus, the 50-megapixel camera may not provide as great results as some other smartphones with the same specifications probably can.

Nokia G11 Plus, however, does have various other supporting camera features to ensure that we enjoy an optimum photography experience. The end result shots of the smartphone look vibrant and perfect for using everyday photography or even for social media. However, the quality may seem so resolved when zoomed into the photos to see finer details.

Some of these camera interface features may sound basic at first glance but we definitely feel the photography modes including Bokeh mode, Slo-motion, Panorama, Timelapse, and Pro-mode settings among others enhance the overall everyday photography experience.

Platform, Memory and Storage

Nokia G11 Plus Review

Nokia G11 Plus has a decent UI and runs on the Android v12 operating system. It is powered by an entry-grade Unisoc T606 chipset with a 1.6GHz octa-core processor. HMD will provide at least 2 versions of OS upgrades along with monthly security updates for 2 years from the date of purchase.

As per the benchmarking websites, Nokia G11 Plus managed to score 309 points during single-core testing and 1302 point during multi-core testing.

Moreover, the SoC of the Nokia G11 Plus has integrated support of 4 GB RAM as well as a Mali-G57 MP1 GPU. Together, these specifications promise improved performance in everyday tasks such as making calls, texting, internet browsing, or simply scrolling through apps.

We found that 64 GB of internal storage capacity is enough for all your important apps or other requirements considering the segment of the smartphone. In case needed, the smartphone storage can be easily expanded up to 512GB via a micro SD card.

A Big 5000 mAh Battery Support

Nokia G11 Plus comes with a 5000 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery for longer operating hours. The battery also has 10W fast charging support. For regular usage, the device can easily provide 3 days of power according to the claims made by the brand.

However, that definitely seems more like a theoretical claim since in order to achieve that many hours of power, you will have to be a lot more conservative in your approach to using the device. Practically speaking, approximately 12 hours of screen time is what one should expect when judging the battery life of this smartphone.

Nokia G11 Plus Connectivity Features

In terms of connectivity, Nokia G11 Plus supports 4G, VoLTE with dual standby, Bluetooth v5 that comes with up to 10 meters of wireless range, Wi-Fi (802.11), and a USB Type-C port. Moreover, the device also facilitates online location tracking, which is performed through the built-in GPS with A-GPS, Glonass, and Galileo.

The device provides decent call quality with speakers that you wouldn’t face any particular issues while answering calls. However, do not expect high-quality sound otherwise. The smartphone sensors include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and in-display fingerprint sensor.

Introduction

WhatsApp always adds something new so that its users can enjoy and has now come out with a Picture-to-Picture mode for certain iOS users as it is currently under testing phase but will soon find its way into regular users’ smartphones as well.

Highlights

  • WhatsApp has started to roll out picture-in-picture mode to select users.
  • This feature is being rolled out for video calls.
  • This feature is available for iOS beta users only.

WhatsApp Has New Feature for Its Users

You can hand it to platforms like WhatsApp that constantly look out for the needs of its users, which can be extremely fickle in this day and age if they’re not satisfied with a particular application and won’t think twice before switching their loyalty to another.

WhatsApp has been the most popular messaging platform since the past decade and sustained its position for that big a period, despite getting competition from Telegram and Signal, both formidable messaging platforms in their own right.

A big reason for WhatsApp’s continued success is that it frequently comes out with new features to keep its users happy, which is what it is doing currently as it has another one ready for video calls in iOS based apps.

The Meta-owned platform has enabled users to use the Picture-to-Picture Mode in both Android and iOS apps, although, as of now, this new feature is available only for videos shared from other applications like Facebook and YouTube, but now WhatsApp users can get this feature during video calls as well.

Whatsapp

WhatsApp users will also get the liberty to use other apps while they’re on WhatsApp video calls, even though only a handful of iOS beta users have the privilege to use this feature for now.

Beta users can download the latest version of WhatsApp on their iPhones to try out the feature and use another app while on WhatsApp video call, while they can disable the video call temporarily view if they want to as it involves using official iOS APIs.

Apple Wants to Shift Manufacturing to Indian Soil; Sooner than Later

0
Apple
Apple

Introduction

Apple has been planning to go ahead with manufacturing plans in India and Vietnam for quite sometime now where it seems that the company is fast forwarding its process due to China’s zero-Covid policy.

Also Read: Which phone has a better camera: iPhone 14 Plus or Pixel 7?

Highlights

  • Apple is facing a shortage of iPhone 14 Pro models.
  • This is primarily due to China’s zero-Covid policy.
  • Now, Apple is planning to shift production to India and Vietnam.

China’s Zero-Covid Policy Prompts Apple to Speed Up Its Action

Apple recently launched its iPhone 14 series in September 2022, where it was reasonably well received, despite getting criticized for its monotonous design, where even the late Steve Jobs’ daughter was not above mocking it on her Instagram story.

Apple is arguably the biggest tech giant in the world right now but like all industries, its business took a massive setback due to the global pandemic called Covid-19 and it became a trying time for different business industries to supply their products during the nearly two-year period.

Apple has now decided to hasten up its manufacturing plans in India and Vietnam as China’s zero-Covid policy is getting out of hand and greatly disrupted the company’s supply chain, resulting in an acute shortage of iPhone 14 Pro models.

iPhone 14

Given China’s stance, Apple has decided to shift nearly 40-45% of iPhones from India, whereas the percentage was single digit earlier, which was relayed by Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned Apple analyst.

It is the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Max handsets whose production has been severely affected, although there are investment banks like JP Morgan that by 2025, every fourth iPhone will be manufactured in India, and will continue to increase at a steady pace.

Apple had kicked off a new iPhone 14 production in India in early 2022, which is the first time that it has done so while the manufacturing of new iPhones too has been narrowed down in the nation given its harsh stance to reduce their dependency on China.

The advent of iPhone 14 series has increased iPhone production in India from 7 million in 2021 to around 14 million in 2022, while the percentage of imported iPhones to the country has gone down from 50% in 2019 to 45% in 2020, then 21% in 2021, and lastly, 15% in 2022, which is an excellent growth.
