OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei reviews OnePlus 11, says it has ‘no real identity’

Carl Pei, who is the co-founder of OnePlus, left the company to launch Nothing wherein he has unveiled two TWS earbuds and a smartphone, the Nothing Phone (1). When the new iPhones came out, Carl Pei, who is a self-proclaimed Apple fan, reviewed the iPhone 14 and shared his insights about the phone.

Now, Carl Pei has shared his review of the recent flagship OnePlus 11 on Nothing’s YouTube channel.

The 12-minute long video shows the reactions of Carl Pei to the hardware and software of the flagship.

Carl Pei calls the OnePlus 11 phone “beautiful” and talks about the details of the design that most consumers might be attracted to at first.

He talks about the subtle textures of the camera module and how the edges of the phone appear thinner than they actually are.

Carl Pei OnePlus 11 Review

However, the  Nothing CEO shares his share of criticism about the phone’s corner-cutting. This includes how the camera module appears to be connected to the side frame of the phone but isn’t really, and some misaligned button placement.

Regardless of this, Pei says that he is impressed with the overall premium feel of the OnePlus 11.

The CEO of Nothing then lists his likes and dislikes about the OnePlus11. One point, he touches on the production cost of the phone.

According to his estimation, the production cost of one of the flagships, including the license for Hasselblad, is around $480.

In this case, a profit of roughly $300 is made from each phone. It’s worth mentioning that the costs do not include logistics and other expense.

Moving aside from hardware, Carl Pei gets more critical of software. This is apparently the first time he is using OxygenOS since the UI switches over to the codebase of ColorOS.

He says that he’s clueless about why the company would take something that worked and mess with it.

He also points out some problems such as the usability of the software, opening the app drawer, and text blocks that were designed with Chinese characters in mind.

Concluding the review, Carl Pei says the OnePlus 11 is a great phone but has “no real identity.”

Physically, the phone apparently doesn’t have the brand cohesiveness that he looks for when it comes to the companies he supports.

Furthermore, the software is also not as polished as he would want despite having numerous helpful functionalities.

OnePlus Design Carl Pei Review

As far as the design, he was a fan of the rounded edges and curved glass, which in his opinion, gave the phone a more narrow feel than it actually has.

He was also a fan of the different kinds of finishes the device has, such as the sandstone black-ish finish on the black model against the shiny finish inside the camera housing.

However, there were things he did not like, such as the side buttons, which he found to be really thin hen compared to the nothing phone, and what he thought would be a challenge for users to tell apart when trying to feel around for them.

Another small detail Pei took issue with was the fact that the mute and volume rocker buttons were not perfectly aligned with each other. Not such a big issue for users, but just an eye-sore for those that notice those little details.

He also made sure to mention that because the OnePlus phones look different every year, there really isn’t an identifiable feature or an “identity” to the phone. According to Pei, Android fans will recognize the phone, but regular people off the street won’t be able to tell which phone it is, unlike when they see a phone from a more recognizable brand.

OnePlus Price Carl Pei Review

At the time the video was taken, the pricing on the OnePlus 11 had not yet been revealed, so Pei was working with the assumption that the device would cost $800 as opposed to the $700 that it actually costs.

Based on that assumed pricing, Pei mentioned that the price matches up with the premium quality of the hardware.

He also made the assumption, or rather an approximation based on his own experience with suppliers for the Nothing Phone, that the OnePlus 11 probably cost $460 to manufacture. That is without including licensing fees and other expenses.

OnePlus Camera Carl Pei Review

Pei incorrectly assumed that the OnePlus 11 camera was using the IMX766 sensor from Sony, which actually turned out to be the IMX890.

However, based on that assumption Pei admitted that photos on the OnePlus 11 are better tuned than on his own Nothing Phone (1).

This observation was made particularly when comparing photos taken in scenarios with lots of light, where the OnePlus 11 camera captured more details.

This realization prompted Pei to admit that his team still has work to do when it comes to improving camera quality on the Nothing Phone.

Another detail Pei thought was important to mention regarding the cameras was that on the OnePlus 11, is that they are all useful to the consumer and not purely a spec flex with an insane amount of megapixels.

OnePlus Software/UI Carl Pei Review

Pei was the first to admit that he’s not that much into customization, so he didn’t play around with that aspect as much.

However, he did notice that the screen calibration was very vivid on the OnePlus 11 display.

That said, he did have some gripes with the level of polish in the user interface, noting that he found little quirks, such as when swiping up around the google search bar on the home screen and other details that didn’t exactly behaving like a normal Android device.

Carl Pei was pleased with the hardware but not so much with the software, and made it a point to make recommendation to those looking for a premium smartphone in the same price range.

Surprisingly, Pei recommended iPhone for those who like iOS and a Pixel phone for those who like Android, with a final plug to his own Nothing Phone (1) for those that are looking for something at half the price.

MyMobile Review

OnePlus 11 has an amazing 2K Fluid AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, premium build quality, impressive 100W fast charging support, and a very strong primary camera on the back that can click good photos in most scenarios.

On the other side ,the phone doesn’t come with an IP rating, which is a big downgrade considering the price range it is available in. There is some throttling issue, especially under load.

Faq’s on WhatsApp Updates

1)How to hide your “Last Seen” on Whatsapp?

Ans)Step 1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android.
Step 2. Go to your WhatsApp settings.
On iPhone, tap Settings – the gear icon – in the bottom right corner.
On Android, tap the More icon – the three vertical dots – in the top right corner, and then select Settings in the menu.
Step 3. In Settings, tap Account.
Step 4. On the Account page, tap Privacy.
Step 5. Tap on the “Last Seen” option to change your online status.
Step 6. There are two options to hide the online or Last Seen status on your WhatsApp account — you can choose for only My Contacts to see your status or for Nobody to see your status.
After saving your settings to “Nobody” in the Last Seen section, you can rest assured that nobody would be able to check your Last Seen time stamp.

2)How To Be Online on Whatsapp Without Being Visible to Your Contacts?

Ans)There are no internal WhatsApp settings that can assist you in remaining invisible when online to the rest of your contacts. In order to stay online without being visible, you will have to use certain third-party apps such as “WA Bubble for Chat.”

You can visit Play Store on your Android device or App Store if you are iOS to download the “WA Bubble for Chat” app. Once downloaded, you can start using the app for chatting without opening WhatsApp.

All your WhatsApp will be visible in different bubbles and you can start chatting in any particular bubble without actually opening WhatsApp. This way you actually never technically are online and thus, remain invisible to the rest of your contacts.

3)What is the Companion mode for whatsapp?

Ans)Currently, WhatsApp doesn’t allow its users to log in with their WhatsApp accounts on more than one smartphone. This is most likely going to change in 2023 with the instant messaging app introducing a new “Companion Mode.” Using this feature, users will be able to link their WhatsApp accounts or the same mobile number on different smartphones.

4)What is the View Once Text feature in WhatsApp ?

Ans)The View Once Text, as the same clearly suggests, is a feature that will delete messages sent once the recipient opens and reads them once. The app already has a view once photo feature that deletes photos shared once seen. The View once text could be extremely useful when you are sharing information that you do not want the recipient of your message to save on their device.
