After releasing the highly anticipated OnePlus Nord 3 last month, the Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer is back to the sale stands with its latest Nord CE upgrade, the OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G. I must say, these smartphone monikers are getting quite amusing.
Anyhow, if you need any proof of why OnePlus is still one of the best mid-range smartphone brands out there, the new OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G could very well be the answer.
With Nord CE3 5G, OnePlus is promising a clean yet strikingly designed smartphone withpowerful hardware.
But we all know how overcrowded the mid-range segment has become and getting a breakthrough in this category is always the trickiest.
I have managed some quick hands-on time with the newly launched device and one thing I can say – it’s definitely a worthy successor to last year’s Nord CE 2. There is a considerable upgrade from Nord CE2.
You are getting a bigger display, a bigger battery, faster charging, and indeed a more flagship-level camera setup. However, the question remains, can Nord CE3 5G be the “gaming-changer” device?
Let’s see.
OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G – Unboxing
I received the review unit a week before the sale date. The unit was provided by OnePlus. It came in the traditional OnePlus Nord packaging. The black colour box with prominent Nord branding using variants colours is a standard now.
I received the Aqua Surge colour variant for this review and thus, the box also had the same colour Nord branding. The packaging is sophisticated and has the necessary information printed on the back.
Opening the retail box carefully, I first found another black paper box with the OnePlus logo.
This paper box contains a good-quality plastic phone case along with some documentation.
The documents include a OnePlus Quick Guide, a OnePlus safety guide, a Red Cable Club membership card, a welcome letter from OnePlus Nord Team and some brand stickers. You also get the SIM ejector tucked in a paper card with other documents.
The inclusion of the OnePlus brand sticker and the Red Cable Club Membership Card is to make you feel like you are part of an exclusive club, gaining access to exciting events and rewards.

The latest Nord CE3 follows a classic OnePlus design philosophy that we have more or less seen in previous OnePlus devices. I had the Aqua Surge colour variant for this review and it looks vibrant with a glass-like feel at the back panel.
The glass-like back adds a premium vibe to the device that only enhances the overall appeal of the phone design. It also provides increased fingerprint resistance to the back panel.
One of the first things you notice in Nord CE3 is how lightweight the device feels in hand. It weighs 184g. For 6.7-inch smartphones, Nord CE3’s in-hand feel is exceptionally well-balanced.
The proper weight distribution is definitely one of the main contributors here along with the clean industrial design.
Another reason why Nord CE3 feels comfortable and has achieved a great ergonomic design is the flat edges paired with subtle curves at the back. It smoothly fits in the palm of your hand.
OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G
There are subtle shifts in the design DNA if you compare it with Nord CE2 though. I didn’t have a Nord CE2 unit to do a side-by-side comparison.
But from whatever I could compare via images of Nord CE2 available on OnePlus’s official website, it was clear that the brand has adopted multiple changes throughout.
First of all, the rectangle ballooning of the rear camera house that we saw in Nord CE2 is now gone from its successor.
There is no separate house for camera setup in Nord CE3 and all you get on the back panel are dual stainless steel camera surrounds featuring three lenses.
The shiny metal rings perfectly protect the cameras while a glitzy diamond-shaped flash adds a refreshing bling.
Moreover, the power button and volume rockers are found on the right-hand side frame of the phone. And just like Nord CE2, the new device also doesn’t have the OnePlus classic Alert Slider.
You also get Dual speakers with one at the top and one at the bottom frame. Apart from this, the SIM tray is located at the bottom frame along with a Type-C USB 2.0 port.
The hybrid SIM slot is dedicated to Dual Nano-SIM/One Nano-SIM and one MicroSD with up to 1TB memory expansion support. There is an IR blaster at the top frame
As for protection features, Nord CE3 5G has got an IP54 rating, which means protection from limited dust ingress and water spray from any direction.

The display, although looks great on paper, isn’t the strongest feat of the Nord CE3. This was also one of the major issues with its predecessor as well. Although, OnePlus did work on some upgrades.
OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G comes with a large 6.7-inch Fluid AMOLED display that promises a stunning visual experience.
The display has sRGB, Display P3, 10-bit Color Depth, and HDR10+ Support while offering FHD+ experience with 2412 x 1080 pixels resolution, and a pixel density of 394 ppi.
But that’s not all – the OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G excels in its refresh rate capabilities. You have the flexibility to choose between 60Hz, 90Hz, or an impressive 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring buttery-smooth animations and scrolling.
Whether you want to conserve battery life with 60Hz or take full advantage of the fluidity at 120Hz, the choice is yours.
Another good thing about the OnePlus Nord CE 3’s display is its impressive screen-to-body ratio of 93.4%. This means minimal bezels, maximizing the screen real estate for an edge-to-edge feel that draws you deeper into your content.
The viewing experience is truly immersive thanks to the small 2.37mm chin and 1.47mm side bezels.
While using the phone before this review, I struggled with the display brightness though. The phone does come with a 2160Hz PWM dimming feature but still, most of the time I was using the phone to stream YouTube or Netflix, the display brightness seems too dull.
Switch on the Eye Comfort mode and it becomes even more dark-toned. I’m not sure about the brightness feature as OnePlus has provided no information.
Above is a YouTube video stream I recorded indoors in artificial lighting. This quality is good when Bright HDR Video Mode is turned on.
Also, we are getting a set of dual speakers with top and bottom speaker firing vents. The sound quality you can check in the video above. The speaker sound isn’t too loud and it gives more bass than punch is what I felt.
On the other hand, the 20.1:9 aspect ratio is perfectly tailored for modern multimedia consumption, offering an elongated screen that’s perfect for watching movies, gaming, or multitasking with split-screen views.
All-in-all, you can expect true-to-life visuals with decent clarity and crisp visual detailing. The device is capable of making your media consumption and gaming experiences feel truly immersive.
It is not one of the best displays in the segment but it doesn’t falter from what all is expected from a smartphone of this calibre.

The eight cores which run at up to 2.7GHz clock speed, deliver up to 5% improvement in CPU performance and up to 10% in improvement GPU performance as compared to the previous generation chipsets.
The Adreno 642L GPU is there to enhance gaming and graphics-intensive applications, promising to deliver stunning visuals and seamless gameplay.
With configurations available in 8GB and 12GB LPDDR4X RAM options, the device is clearly designed to make multitasking effortless, allowing you to switch between apps without any lag.
STORAGE TEST v10
Moreover, the storage options of 128GB and 256GB UFS 3.1 ensure ample space for all your files, apps, and media, while also contributing to faster data access and app loading times.
It is also the first OnePlus Nord Core Edition phone to support RAM-Vita, a technology developed by OnePlus to help you get the most from your phone’s memory.
When it comes to performance, Nord CE3 5G definitely has powerful hardware support. In practical use, the performance of the phone is impressive.
I didn’t encounter any lags or force closes while using the phone as my primary device for a couple of days.
To understand the actual unit capacity of the phone further, I ran some basic benchmark tests. While the Geekbench 6 CPU result was 1121 for single-core and 2754 for multi-core, the GPU result for the same benchmark app came 2558 for GPU OpenCL.
As for the AnTuTu v10 results, Nord CE3 5G scored 645598 with CPU temperature recorded at 48.2℃.
If we compare the AnTuTu result with its predecessor Nord CE2, there is a considerable difference in recorded scores. Nord CE2 has an overall AnTuTu score of 423,161.
WILD LIFE STRESS TEST SCREENSHOT
Putting the device through the Wild Life Stress test to understand its capacity to perform under longer periods of heavy load showed some great results.
It came to around 99.1% stability with Best Loop Score recorded at 2861 and the Lowest Loop Score of 2834.
Similarly, the phone works well for games also. I spent a few hours testing out BGMI and Genshin Impact Mobileusing the max settings. The gaming experience is actually much better than I expected.
There were no noticeable frame drops even with the highest settings of BGMI. Although Genshin Impact at higher settings might not run as smoothly as stutters were quite noticeable from the very beginning of the game.
So you might have to dial down the settings to 30 fps and graphics quality to medium to play games such as Genshin Impact. Simply by altering the settings, I was able to get fairly stable gameplay.
Moreover, I did notice that the phone gets quite warm to the touch after just a few intense gaming sessions. And just to make it clear, the phone’s cooling system otherwise works quite well and it does cool down itself fast as well.
As for software, it has the latest OxygenOS 13.1, based on the smooth and customizable Android™ 13 operating system. OxygenOS is renowned for its clean and bloatware-free interface. It offers a near-stock Android experience with added customizations and features.
The Nord CE3 5G camera system is versatile and capable of providing great output. OnePlus is sticking to the triple camera setup on the rear side a combination of primary + ultra-wide + micro sensors.
However, there is a significant upgrade when it comes to sensor quality and output in the primary camera.
The primary camera of Nord CE3 5G boasts a 50 megapixels Sony IMX890 sensor with a size of 1/1.56″ and a pixel size of 1.0 µm. The 6P lens setup and ƒ/1.8 aperture allow for excellent light-gathering capabilities.
The output of the primary camera is stunning giving clarity and detail in every shot. It excels in capturing vivid and well-defined images even in challenging lighting conditions.
Macro Lens
The presence of Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) ensures fast and accurate focusing, making it ideal for capturing action shots and moving subjects.
Additionally, both Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) support work in tandem to eliminate camera shakes. The largely produces blur-free images even in shaky scenarios.
Ultra Wide Lens
Then we have the 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera featuring a Sony IMX355 sensor with a wide 112° angle of view.
It is a perfect combination to capture landscapes, group photos, and immersive shots that encompass more in a single frame.
The shots I tried to take using the ultra-wide sensor were bright and detailed.
Though it has a fixed focus, the ultra-wide camera captures sharp and distortion-free images that add depth and creativity to your photography.
Primary Camera
A dedicated 2-megapixel macro lens with an effective shooting distance of 4cm produces decent results.
It allows you to explore the tiny details of your subjects, whether it’s intricate textures, delicate patterns, or tiny flora and fauna.
You also get a decent 16-megapixel front camera for all your selfie and video calling needs.
With a wide ƒ/2.4 aperture and a focal length equivalent to 24mm, the front camera allows more light to enter the lens, brightening up the selfies and creating a background blur that makes the subject stand out.
The selfies came out a lot more natural. The camera does not fine-tune the images too much and keeps the skin tone genuine.
If you are into videography, the OnePlus Nord CE 3 5G might look great to you from the spec sheet. With the ability to shoot videos in 4K at 30 frames per second, Nord CE3 5G is capable of capturing stunningly detailed and lifelike footage.
However, for best results, I would recommend the 1080p video that supports both 30 and 60 frames per second recordings.
Check out both video recording samples above in daylight and nightlight. Both were recorded at 1080p settings and have managed to capture with great clarity.
Even though recording special moments or creating professional-grade content using the 4K video can ensure exceptional clarity and realism, not much customisation is available at that resolution setting.
With 1080p video at 120 frames per second and 720p video at an impressive 240 frames per second, you can capture stunning slow-motion shots that bring out every detail in action-packed moments.
On the other hand, the Ultra Steady Mode ensures smooth and stabilized 1080p video at 60 frames per second, making it ideal for recording on-the-go action or fast-paced scenes with minimal shakiness.
For the social media enthusiasts out there, Nord CE3 5G offers a host of other exciting video-capturing features, including Pano for capturing breathtakingpanoramic videos, Macro for detailed close-up shots in videos, and Text-scanner for extracting text from videos.
The device also provides retouching options, filters, and Google Lens integration for added versatility and creativity in your video-capturing endeavours.
