An unusual detail that you will notice in the Galaxy A55 renders is a protrusion on the right side, surrounding the power and volume buttons.

This design choice, while unique, does make you wonder if there is some functionality coming out of it.
So far, we are out of ideas of what it could mean.

LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review

Highlights

  • Advanced Bluetooth 5.3 Connectivity with Seamless Pairing
  • Superior Sound Quality with Meridian Presets and HSP Technology
  • Long-lasting Battery Life with Fast Charging Feature
  • IP67 Water Resistance and Innovative UVnano Technology for Hygiene

The LG Tone Free Fit TF7 emerges as a dark horse in a challenging market with tons of competition.

Balancing a sleek, sporty design with UVnano technology, these earbuds are crafted for the modern, health-conscious user.

At a competitive price of Rs 19,999, they don’t just aim to meet expectations but to redefine them.

My several months of experience with these buds should provide insights into whether they truly live up to the hype.

In this review, we delve into the nuances of LG’s innovative approach to see if the Tone Free Fit TF7 is more than just another pair of earbuds.

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Superior sound quality Bulky design
Effective ANC No AptX support
Reliable battery life
Comfortable fit

  • IP67 Water Resistance
  • Up to 30 Hours Battery Life (with case)

Design and Fit

LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review:
LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review: Design

In reimagining the design of the LG Tone Free Fit TF7, LG has embraced minimalism and functionality with a keen eye for detail.

The earbuds themselves, echoing the colour palette of the case, boast a matte finish accented by a distinctive green line, a subtle yet stylish touch.

Their compact, stem-free appearance is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical, eliminating bulkiness.

The case’s textured surface, adept at repelling scratches and stains, is complemented by a USB Type-C port, a charging indicator, and an innovative UV nano light.

That last bit is LG’s homage to hygiene by using ultraviolet light to sanitize the earbuds, ensuring a cleaner, healthier listening experience.

I don’t know how much difference it makes in practical usage, but having it as an option doesn’t hurt.

The earbuds themselves stand out with their compact design and user-friendly features.

Smaller than utmost competitors in the price range, they feature a dot design which, while not to everyone’s taste, provides a surprisingly comfortable fit even for those with protruding ears, as the default tips fit snugly.

As such, comfort seems to be a key strength of these buds, making them suitable for both sedentary and active use.

With an IP67 water resistance rating, they proved reliable during my intensive workouts, handling sweat without any issues.

Features and Companion App

LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review:
LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review: Features

The LG Tone Free Fit TF7 feature Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity that ensures mostly smooth performance with occasional minor hiccups.

Pairing is a breeze, as I discovered when connecting them to iPhone 12 Pro Max; the process was quick and seamless.

These earbuds also boast wear detection technology, pausing and playing music automatically when removed or worn, earning them brownie points in my book.

Although lacking AptX support, which is fine since I have an iPhone, they support AAC and SBC codecs, effectively minimizing latency.

The audio-video experience is synchronized for the majority of my usage whether I was streaming movies or gaming.

Additionally, the TF7’s design incorporates intuitive touch-sensitive controls that respond more-or-less accurately to gestures.

The earbuds can perform various functions with simple taps: single taps for play/pause, double taps on the right or left for volume control, and triple taps for track navigation. These gestures are easy to remember and execute.

Apart from that, the TF7 also offer versatile multi-point connectivity, allowing simultaneous pairing with up to five devices and easy switching between them.

However, the absence of a pairing button means new connections require either disconnection from current devices or use of the companion app.

For those seeking an immersive listening experience, the earbuds also feature Active Noise Cancellation, activated by a long press on either bud.

Sound Quality

LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review:
LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review: Sound Quality

The pièce de résistance of the Tone Free Fit TF7 are definitely the incorporation of advanced technologies like 6mm drivers, Meridian presets, and Headphone Spatial Processing (HSP).

I predominantly liked the Bass Boost EQ setting, which provided an enthralling auditory experience since I like to listen to a lot of hip-hop.

The TF7s were able to deliver clear vocals and rhythmic beats, despite its relatively small driver size. The treble, too, is well-balanced, contributing to a rich and detailed sound profile.

Exploring further, I tested the TF7 with some iconic rock music, starting with the instrument-heavy Led Zeplling’s Kashmir.

The earbuds impressively replicated every element of this classic track, from the guitar and drums to the electronic beats, creating a dynamic soundscape.

The TF7’s noise cancellation feature is another standout aspect. With ANC activated, these earbuds effectively isolate you from external noise, offering an immersive listening experience.

Whether it’s the hum of an AC unit or the ambient noise at a park, the TF7 manages to minimize distractions significantly.

However, I would advise caution when using the highest ANC setting outdoors, as it can create a sense of over-isolation.

For outdoor scenarios, I recommend switching to the ambient sound mode, which strikes a balance between staying aware of your surroundings and enjoying your music.

While the audio performance in this mode might not match the full intensity of ANC, it remains impressively satisfying and safe for external environments.

Battery Life

LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review:
LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review: Battery

The FN7s offer a robust battery performance that aligns closely with the brand’s claims. The earbuds lasted about 5 hours on a single charge while using ANC continuously, which is quite impressive.

Turning off ANC extends the battery life even further, reaching around 10 hours. The charging case contributes significantly to longevity, providing at least 28 hours extra, a notable achievement in real-world usage.

An additional highlight of the TF7 is its efficient fast-charging capability.

In practical terms, this meant that with just 5 minutes of charging, the earbuds could deliver about an hour of playback time, a convenient feature for those on the go.

Testing the earbuds with ANC activated and the volume set to 50%, I recorded a battery life of just under six hours.

This performance meets expectations, solidifying the TF7 as a reliable choice for extended use, whether it’s for work, travel, or leisure.

Final Verdict

LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review:
LG Tone Free Fit TF7 Review: Verdict

The LG Tone Free Fit TF7 earbuds are a standout choice in the crowded market of wireless earbuds.

They skillfully combine innovative features with robust performance, offering excellent sound quality, intuitive controls, and reliable battery life.

While they may not be perfect for every user, especially given the lack of AptX support and the slightly bulkier design, their strengths in areas like comfort, sound customization, and active noise cancellation make them a compelling option for a wide range of listeners.

Arnold Su of Asus India on Driving Innovation in Consumer and Gaming PC Sector: An Exclusive Interview

0

Highlights

  • Asus leads with innovative gaming PCs and consumer devices in India.

  • Plans to expand with local manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

  • Asus embraces AI and VR technologies in upcoming PC ranges.

  • 5G integration set to transform Asus’s laptop offerings in India.

In an insightful interview, Arnold Su, Vice President of the Consumer & Gaming PC, System Business Group at Asus India, sheds light on Asus’s innovative strategies and future plans in the dynamic world of consumer and gaming PCs.

Su delves into how Asus maintains its cutting-edge position in the market, particularly focusing on the burgeoning gaming sector and the evolving needs of the modern consumer.

Could you share insights into Asus’s strategy for staying at the forefront of innovation in the consumer and gaming PC markets?

Since the beginning of our operations in India, we have been at the forefront of exercising our vision to introduce state-of-the-art solutions that are backed by innovation.

Interestingly, when the idea of gaming was based on the premise of building your PC, putting all the permutations and combinations of bringing the best monitor that is in line with the processor, we decided to foray into the R&D to become a one-stop-shop solution for the enthusiasts.

We built PCs specifically for gaming that packed performance, introduced seamless software integrations, and compelling visuals that revolutionized the whole segment.

Not just limited to gaming, we are also making significant strides in our consumer and creator series portfolios.

This year also saw the launch of ASUS’ Creators Series, which has been built to support the burgeoning creator economy in the country.

It is laden with tools that help content creators deliver compelling visuals and a seamless user experience.

Our commitment to foray into cutting-edge technology is a priority for the Indian market. We also became the first company in India to launch a handheld gaming device, the ROG Ally, to promote gaming on the go. The product received an overwhelming response in the market.

Imbibing this strategy has helped us become the number one gaming PC company in the country five quarters in a row and the second-largest consumer laptop brand, as reported by the latest IDC report.

What trends do you foresee in the gaming PC sector in the next few years, and how is Asus preparing to meet these emerging needs?

With the proliferation of 5G connectivity, the adoption of cloud gaming and augmented reality (AR) games will see traction in the coming years.

Additionally, the online gaming and esports industry has been growing significantly over the past few years.

Therefore, the growth potential for the esports industry is enormous in India in the coming years.

Aligned with these trends, ASUS ROG has a diverse line-up in the Indian market designed to match the needs of the gaming community as a whole, be it professional gamers or upcoming gaming enthusiasts.

The TUF series is the perfect companion for those looking for an affordable gaming machine. For performance-centric gameplay, we have the ROG STRIX SCAR series.

Those looking to switch between work and play within minutes can go for our Zephyrus Series, and lastly, the ROG Flow X & Z series offers top-of-the-line industry innovations, perfect for those looking to keep up with work and gaming on the go.

Further, there is a “gaming on the go” phenomenon growing in the country. Consumers want a lightweight gaming experience but, at the same time, doesn’t compromise on performance.

The recently introduced ROG Ally will be a major driver of this phenomenon in the country. This groundbreaking product is the industry’s first Windows-based gaming console PC.

We are confident that this innovation will transform the gaming landscape, offering gamers an unparalleled and immersive experience not found in any other product.

How does Asus incorporate consumer feedback into its product development process, particularly for gaming PCs?

We at ASUS are constantly working towards ensuring that our products are in line with customer requirements.

To understand this, we try to integrate feedback and insights to deliver better and more innovative products tailored to their needs.

Even during the development journey of the ROG Ally, which spanned over five years, originating from the conceptualization of the ROG Mothership.

We conducted numerous focus groups and testing rounds involving diverse stakeholders, employing an iterative approach of constant testing and refinement.

This process enabled us to determine the optimal combinations of screen size, type, trigger type, grip area width, ergonomics, and other crucial factors.

Additionally, the integration of Anime Matrix in our latest offering in the Zephyrus series was conceptualized on the premise that gaming laptops mostly lack an aesthetic appeal. This option allowed users to display a fragment of their personality.

Consumer satisfaction and feedback integration are at the crux of ASUS operations.

We conduct multiple rounds of market research to understand how the response has been for our products and to understand customer queries.

With technologies like AI and VR gaining momentum, how is Asus integrating these into its consumer and gaming PCs?

ASUS has evolved into being recognized as a provider of technology solutions beyond motherboards and graphics cards.

Recognizing the potential to expand our capabilities, we ventured into High-Performance Computing (HPC) system development in 2017.

At that time, we dedicated a team of 200 individuals to delve into system-level Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Two years ago, in collaboration with the government, we established Taiwan Web Service (TWS), an ASUS subsidiary aimed at delivering AIHPC supercomputer cloud services.

Our deep expertise in computing enabled us to successfully introduce significant products like ChatGPT to the market.

Looking ahead to 2024, we anticipate an exciting year for AI.

ASUS is committed to sustained investment in research and development, focusing on core technologies.

We firmly believe that AI is at the forefront of a new technological evolution.

As such, our commitment to further investments aims to propel AI application innovation to broader and more advanced levels.

Is Asus considering local manufacturing or assembly to meet the demand for gaming PCs in India, and how might that impact the pricing and availability of the ROG series?

For the coming years, our intent is to scale our contribution towards the esteemed make in India initiative.

This contribution will eventually benefit consumers in the future as we will continue to floor innovative and affordable devices across our portfolios and product line-ups.

With the rollout of 5G, how do you see it impacting the PC industry, and what are Asus’s plans in this area?

Gaming is one of the pertinent demand drivers of PCs. According to a recent industry study, India is the fastest-growing games market in Asia.

Therefore, with faster internet speed and low latency, 5G will allow Indian gamers to enjoy an immersive gaming experience even while playing heavy games on their laptops.

Moreover, 5G will make cloud-based gaming more accessible to mobile game enthusiasts who wish to explore low to mid-range laptops as cloud gaming does not necessitate heavy and sophisticated premium-range devices.

Advertently, this will result in the growth of 5G laptops in the coming years.

How does Asus balance the need for high performance with affordability in its consumer PC range?

Understanding that there are different sets of consumers whose requirements span across multiple price points, we have introduced a range of products for both, consumer and Gaming PCs.

We ensure that our innovation and cutting-edge solutions are not just limited to the premium segment but is also reflected in our range of more affordable laptops. We will continue to push premium features in our affordable range.

FAQs

Asus focuses on understanding customer needs and integrating feedback into product development, especially in gaming PCs. With a diverse lineup like the ROG STRIX SCAR series and the TUF series, Asus caters to both professional gamers and enthusiasts, ensuring high performance and affordability.

What are Asus’s plans for incorporating AI and VR into its PCs?

Asus is heavily invested in AI and High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. The Apple Watch SE is main reason for this extreme dominance, according to new market intelligence data.

Apple Watch Market Share

Apple Watch Market Share

Despite the overall smartwatch market growing by 9% in the same period, Apple Watch’s market share remains strong.

Apple’s inane ability to maintain leadership in the face of intense competition has always been noteworthy but especially this time around considering the later release of its latest model compared to the previous year.

As mentioned, the 2nd-generation SE model, in particular, has been a substantial contributor to Apple’s sustained market presence.

Huawei’s Impressive Performance

Huawei has emerged as a significant contender, making a remarkable comeback in the premium smartwatch segment.

Despite previous setbacks due to US chip sanctions, Huawei has seen a 56% year-on-year increase in overall shipments, with its HLOS smartwatches experiencing a 122% surge.

Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds Review: High on Quality, Low on Price

0

Highlights

  • Eco-friendly design with 50% recycled materials.

  • Comfortable fit, ideal for active use.

  • Bass-heavy sound perfect for modern music.

  • Impressive 20-hour total battery life with rapid charging.

Skullcandy, a familiar name in the audio gear industry, introduced its latest offering in the earbuds category – the Smokin’ Buds, back in September.

With a price tag of Rs 7,999 these TWS are positioned at the higher end of the budget range.

This addition to Skullcandy’s lineup comes amidst stiff competition in the wireless earbuds market, promising a range of features designed to appeal to various users.

I approached the Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds with a mix of skepticism and curiosity.

This review will explore whether these earbuds stand out in a crowded market and justify their pricing.

  • Capacitive Touch Controls

  • Microphone in Each Earbud

  • Noise-Isolating Fit

Design and Build

Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds Design and Build

I feel that the Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds, crafted from 50% recycled plastic, strike a balance between eco-conscious design and practicality.

Despite its commendable sturdiness and IPX4 certification for splash resistance, the earbuds and their case give a plasticky impression, which is fine given the pricing but a few competing products definitely look cleaner.

Also, the ear tips, made from a stiffer, lower-quality silicone, might require replacement after prolonged use.

While the case is durable, its plastic hinge feels slightly flimsy and potentially susceptible to wear over time.

Nevertheless, the lightweight, sleek design of the Smokin’ Buds and their portable case makes them an easy and convenient companion for everyday use.

The Smokin’ Buds Wireless does well to blend comfort with functionality.

Nestled inside the case are two ultra-light earbuds, offering a secure fit that remains stable even during activities like jogging.

I would know since I took them two separate intense jogging sessions and not once did they fall off.

Accompanying these earbuds are three different sizes of ear tips to cater to various ear shapes, ensuring a snug fit in the outer ear.

I felt that the ear tips’ stiffer silicone composition requires a bit of effort to insert, but it does contribute to the buds’ overall stability.

However, this tight fit might lead to some discomfort during prolonged use.

The initial setup is user-friendly; upon inserting the buds, a voice prompt signals pairing mode, allowing for a seamless Bluetooth connection with devices like my iPhone.

Features

Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds Features

As for the features, the TWS from Skullcandy come equipped with touch-sensitive controls that are mostly effective, though not without their quirks.

They facilitate a range of commands: a single tap plays or pauses music, answers or ends calls, a double tap raises the volume, and a quadruple tap changes the EQ mode.

However, there is no wear detection support, which felt like a miss for me.

Additionally, holding either bud for a second can reject a call or activate your voice assistant whether Android or iOS.

However, the control for lowering the volume—a triple tap—didn’t function in my testing. While these controls are comprehensive, they lack the precision found in more expensive offerings.

One notable absence is a dedicated app for the Smokin’ Buds, meaning users cannot fine-tune settings like the EQ or customize controls to their preference.

This limitation could be a drawback for those who prefer a more personalised listening experience.

Audio Performance

Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds Audio Performance

Let’s get into sound quality and the Smokin Buds deliver a more than decent experience within their budget range.

Testing them with a variety of genres highlighted their strengths and limitations.

The intense tracks of Guns and Roses were impressively rendered, with robust guitars, vibrant vocals, and dynamic drums.

While the clarity in orchestral pieces like Hans Zimmer’s Time in Inception wasn’t as refined as it might be on higher-end headphones, the overall quality was satisfactory for the price.

In terms of sound profile, the Smokin’ Buds have a bass-heavy emphasis, making them ideal for genres like pop and hip-hop.

However, as we mentioned instrumental enthusiasts might find the sound lacking in detail.

The earbuds have good peaks and dips performance, although there’s a noticeable imbalance in the high-bass and low-mid ranges, and a dip in the mid-mid that slightly hollows out vocals and lead instruments.

There is no ANC with the Smokin’ Buds but the earbuds’ snug fit effectively filters out much background noise.

This also translates to clear call quality, with recipients noting crystal clear sound.

The noise isolation capability of these earbuds is quite effective, minimizing external distractions and enhancing the listening experience.

Battery Life

Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds Battery Life

The Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds offer an impressive battery life, with up to 8 hours of playback time on a single charge and an additional 12 hours available from the charging case.

This makes a total of 20 hours of use when both the buds and case are fully charged.

Along witha rather portable design and lasting battery life the buds can last a full workday of listening, with the added flexibility of topping up the charge on the go.

Additionally, the Smokin’ Buds feature a practical ‘Rapid Charge’ function, providing up to two hours of playback from just 10 minutes of charging, making them a reliable option for those with busy lifestyles or frequent travelers.

Final Verdict

Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds Final Verdict

The Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds, priced at Rs 7,999, are a solid choice in the budget TWS market.

They balance eco-conscious design with practical features, offering comfort and stability, albeit with a plasticky feel and stiffer ear tips.

While they lack advanced features like wear detection and app customization, they compensate with efficient controls and good battery life.

Audio performance is robust, especially for bass-heavy genres, though not as nuanced for intricate musical styles.

Overall, I think that they are an affordable option for everyday use, well-suited for users prioritising functionality and battery life over high-end sophistication.

FAQs

How is the build quality of Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds?

They excel in bass-heavy music, making them ideal for genres like pop and hip-hop. However, they might not deliver the same level of detail in more intricate musical styles due to their sound profile.

Are there any limitations in the features of Smokin’ Buds?

Yes, they lack wear detection and customizable app support. The touch controls are comprehensive but not as precise as more expensive models.

What’s the battery life like on the Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds?
