Are Samsung Phones Safe? New Report Raises Concerns Over Radiation Levels

Highlights

  • Some Samsung Galaxy S22 and A23 models have high SAR levels.
  • The Galaxy A23’s head SAR level is reported at 1.49, close to the safety limit.
  • Samsung’s newer S24 models show improved, lower SAR levels.
  • Responsible phone use can help reduce radiation exposure risks.

A lot is being talked about radiation these days from our mobiles.

Can pressing them constantly to our ears be bad for our health?

A new report raises some alarming questions about certain Samsung models in particular.

The report is produced by a company called Stocklytics.

It looked closely at something called the ‘Specific Absorption Rate’ or SAR.

This measures the amount of radiation your body absorbs with a mobile phone.

Watchdogs such as the American government impose legal limits on the SAR levels to try and keep us safe.

“Samsung has come under scrutiny following recent revelations about the radiation levels of its popular Galaxy S22 and A Series devices. These phones may exhibit higher radiation levels due to the complex interplay of advanced features, high-performance antennas, and intensive power demands, all of which contribute to increased electromagnetic emissions in order to maintain superior connectivity and functionality.” Stocklytics financial analyst, Edith Reads.

Samsung Phones Posing Higher SAR Levels

According to the report, some of Samsung’s newest handsets are getting near to those safety limits.

The Galaxy S22 range is inching up to the top level allowed for radiation near your head and body.

The more troubling issue, however, is the numbers for the A23 phones – their head SAR is greatly worrisome at 1.49.

But all is not lost.

Samsung has done many low-radiation handsets in the past, including Note 10+ and A72.

Their new S24 models seem better than the S22-carrying lower SARs despite more fancy new features.

So what are we to make of all of this?

Yes, some Samsung phones set off alarm bells, yet it is clear that the company knows how to produce handsets that are safer.

As mobiles get smart, brands have to balance innovation with shielding customers from excess radiation exposure.

What Can Be Done

Samsung's newer S24 models show improved, lower SAR levels.
Samsung’s newer S24 models show improved, lower SAR levels.

Meanwhile, going forward, Samsung needs to learn from its past mistakes on approximation and radiation safety.

After all, no technological marvel comes at the price of our well-being.

Responsible mobile phone use is also instrumental in this regard: limited calls, speaker mode, wired headsets are some of the measures that can reduce the risks.

Finally, a little reasonable caution about mobile radiation makes sense.

But there is no need to panic either.

All that is needed is transparent data, responsible companies, and sensible individual habits-so that we wisely enjoy our smartphones while keeping a check on the possible harms.

FAQs

What is Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)?

SAR measures the amount of radiation absorbed by your body when using a mobile phone. Legal limits on SAR levels are set by watchdogs like the US government to ensure safety.

Which Samsung phones have raised concerns about high SAR levels?

The report highlights that the Galaxy S22 and A23 models are nearing the safety limits for radiation near the head and body, with the A23’s head SAR level particularly high at 1.49.

Are there any Samsung models with lower SAR levels?

Yes, Samsung has produced low-radiation handsets in the past, such as the Note 10+ and A72. The newer S24 models also show improved SAR levels compared to the S22.

What can consumers do to reduce their radiation exposure from mobile phones?

Consumers can reduce risks by limiting call duration, using speaker mode, and opting for wired headsets. These practices help minimize direct exposure to mobile phone radiation.

What steps should Samsung take to improve radiation safety in their phones?

Samsung should learn from past models and prioritize radiation safety in their designs. Balancing innovation with customer safety is crucial, and continued focus on reducing SAR levels is necessary.

Sony ULT Field 1 Review: Powerful Bass and Robust Design in a Portable Speaker

0

Highlights

  • Rich, immersive sound with front-facing tweeter, woofer, and passive bass radiators.
  • Durable and portable design with IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.
  • Long battery life up to 16 hours with quick charge functionality.
  • Easy customization with the Sony Music Center app, though limited in-depth options.

I guess there’s a reason to celebrate audiophiles: Sony has just launched a new line of products with names that are easy to remember.

Sony ULT Power Sound series is around giving you powerful bass.

The new line sports three speakers and a pair of headphones, diversifications of Sony’s Extra Bass and XE-Series lines.

One of these new speakers is the ULT Field 1, which is a tiny portable speaker that will cost Rs 16,990—almost as much as some top-end JBL models.

Let’s go in deep and find out what the ULT Field 1 has in this review.

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Rich, immersive sound Limited app customization
Robust and durable design Larger than some competitors
Long battery life Basic design options

Unboxing Experience

The Sony ULT Field 1 looked great right after unboxing.

The packaging was very sleek and premium-designed.

Inside the package, the speaker was well secured and packaged together with a USB Type-C charging cable and a user manual.

Simple unboxing offered access to each element in an obvious and easy way.

Build and Design

•Rich, immersive sound with front-facing tweeter, woofer, and passive bass radiators.
Rich, immersive sound with front-facing tweeter, woofer, and passive bass radiators.

The ULT Field 1 has somewhat of a small footprint, which means it is very portable and is great for outside use.

Its design is wrapped in a hip, sturdy body with a premium feel.

The speaker is slightly larger than the JBL Flip 6 but offers fewer color options.

It is 2.7 by 7.6 by 2.8 inches and barely heavier at 1.4 pounds.

The speaker is oblong and lined with fabric, narrowing towards the middle, like the costlier Sony SRS-XG300.

The ends are then protected with a coating of silicone.

The tweeter and woofer are front-firing into a 15-degree angle for mono audio; passive bass radiators are located at each end for full-spectrum sound reinforcement.

It includes a rugged strap for carrying or hanging that’s in a bootlace style.

•Durable and portable design with IP67 rating for water and dust resistance
Durable and portable design with IP67 rating for water and dust resistance

The ULT Field 1 can be set up in either vertical or horizontal orientation.

Its body form is a standard rectangle, quite different from the XE200 in terms of design.

The bungee strap is adjustable, although one has to be a bit more patient with the fit.

The controls for power, Bluetooth, play/pause/call, volume, and ULT are easy to navigate.

Sony has its Music Center app, facilitating an adjustable equalizer, with not many options, of course.

It’s an IP67-rated device as well; hence, it is waterproof, dustproof, rustproof, and shockproof.

Sound Quality, Features and Battery

•Easy customization with the Sony Music Center app, though limited in-depth options.
Easy customization with the Sony Music Center app, though limited in-depth options.

The Sony ULT Field 1 provides great sound quality, especially for a portable speaker.

The woofer has been designed and placed front-firing, while the speakers are forward-firing, resulting in passive radiators at both ends—bestowing rich, room-filling sound.

Listening to the track “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd, the speaker implemented very strong sound staging; the guitar solos and atmospheric sounds resonated with brilliant highs and detailed mids.

“Come Together” by The Beatles had deep and resonant bass without covering the rest of the audio spectrum; the bass lines were punchy and filled the soundscape completely.

Using the Sony Music Center app made customizing sounds to my personal enjoyment easy.

The user interface of the app is straightforward, and I found it easy to manage almost everything I want from the speaker.

Sound Quality, Features and Battery
Sound Quality, Features and Battery

The onboard equalizer was a tad finicky to adjust the sound profile, but when once set, it really gives a personalized experience.

Streaming music from Tidal and Spotify was easy, with the app providing fast, easy access.

The Sony app isn’t as granular as others, like the JBL One App I mentioned, but it gives you access to the essentials.

It doesn’t have that level of premium finish and intuitiveness as app designers that some competitors have, but pass the Music Center app it did for most standard-level adjustments and searching for settings all around.

One of them has to be the eXtra Bass technology, which really beefs up an already bass-heavy track.

While listening to Pink Floyd’s \”Money,\” the bass was powerful and punchy, yet the mids and highs were not at all distorted, even at higher volumes.

It is quite balanced, and thus, every genre of music, right from classic rock through modern pop, is handled well by ULT Field 1.

Final Verdict

Final Verdict
Final Verdict

The Sony ULT Field 1 is a very good portable speaker that actually encompasses a very robust build quality, amazing sound performance, and amazing practical features.

At a price of Rs16,990, the Sony ULT Field 1 is really a good deal with heavy bass, balanced mids, and crisp highs.

The claim to outdoor use is backed by the durability of an IP67 rating.

The Sony Music Center app is less robust than those of some other companies but still gives you the basics as well as the ability to play with settings.

Its portability, ease of connection, and long battery life all rank it high for music lovers who want tunes working for them while on the move.

The ULT Field 1 is a speaker fit for everyone and serves as an extremely reliable and high-quality portable speaker.

Google Pixel Watch 3 Leaked Renders Reveal Design and Battery Upgrade

Highlights

  • Pixel Watch 3 retains a circular bezel-less display with a crowny button.
  • Slightly thicker design with dimensions of 40.79 x 40.73 x 14mm.
  • Battery capacity upgrade to 307mAh for improved battery life.
  • Expected to launch in multiple sizes, including a possible Pixel Watch 3 Pro.

Exclusive 5K renders and a 360-degree video have given us our first detailed look at Google’s upcoming Pixel Watch 3 smartwatch.

The exclusive leak is brought to you by the partnership between 91mobiles and Steve Hemmerstoffer.

According to the leaked renders, the Google Pixel Watch 3 retains the same overall design as the predecessor: Google Pixel Watch 2.

We are looking at a circular bezel-less display with a crowny button on the side.

Slamming a guess here, it could measure 1.2″ diagonally, much like its predecessor.

One thing that is expected to change this year is the thickness of the Pixel Watch 3 design.

Its dimensions could stand at around 40.79 x 40.73 x 14mm, which would be more significant than the Google Pixel Watch 2’s 41 x 41 x 12.3mm body—that is, if we don’t include the protrusion part.

Battery Capacity Upgrade

Google Pixel Watch 3 Leaked Renders Reveal Design and Battery Upgrade

Alleged Pixel Watch 3 listings spotted on certification websites like Dekra and Safety Korea reveal the smartwatch could pack a 307mAh battery.

Although just an upgrade from the 304mAh cell in the Pixel Watch 2, it should still make a difference in battery life.

Leaked renders do show the Pixel Watch 3 running Wear OS, Google’s smartwatch operating system.

At launch, it will be available in at least the Black color option with the matching strap, though more will likely follow.

Multiple Sizes Expected

A key new addition could be the availability of the Pixel Watch 3 in two different sizes.

In contrast, the Pixel Watch 2 came in a single 41mm case size.

If accurate, we may see a larger ‘Pixel Watch 3 Pro’ model accompanying the standard version.

While the design appears unchanged, Google will undoubtedly introduce hardware and software upgrades to keep the Pixel Watch 3 competitive in the smartwatch market.

The Pixel Watch 3 is slated to be unveiled alongside the Pixel 9 smartphone series in October, continuing Google’s strategy of offering a companion wearable alongside its flagship phones.

Highlights

  • Galaxy Watch7 Ultra features a squarish outer bezel with a circular display.
  • New third physical button for quick access controls.
  • Larger speaker grills for improved audio capabilities.
  • Seamless watch band integration and easier band removal.

Exclusive 5K renders of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Watch7 Ultra have leaked online ahead of its official unveiling at the next Galaxy Unpacked event.

Prior leaks indicate the Galaxy Watch7 series could feature a new chipset, 50% faster charging, and may finally add blood sugar monitoring.

Samsung is expected to officially announce the Watch7 Ultra and other new devices at its July 10 Unpacked event in Paris.

Now these new images, courtesy of @OnLeaks, in collaboration with Smartprix, brings us our first detailed look at the next iteration of Samsung’s premium smartwatch line-up.

A Squarish Design with a Difference

The most obvious thing you will pick out regarding the Galaxy Watch7 Ultra is the squarish outer bezel surrounding the circular display.

This angular look differs from the all-round approach of Galaxy Watches before it.

Still, Samsung has stuck with using a rounded display to ensure the core UI experience of the product is one and the same.

It’s a bold move, but the squarish bezel doesn’t make the watch quite so rectangular as the Apple Watch, for instance.

The rotating bezel, another loved feature from the Galaxy Watch Classic, will also still be present and is as shiny as ever, in contrast to the matte angular frame.

New Button and Larger Speakers

Another noticeable change is how a third physical button is sandwiched between the traditional two on the right side.

That could provide new quick access controls similar to Apple Watch’s Action button.

The Watch7 Ultra also appears to have larger speaker grills than before, hinting at improved audio capabilities.

Same Display, But Larger Footprint

While the roundabout display is still around 1.5 inches, similar to that of the Galaxy Watch6 Classic, the overall dimensions are slightly larger still, at roughly 47 x 47.4 x 16.4mm, thanks to the added squarish bezel.

The rotating bezel itself has subtle line markings instead of numeric indicators found previously.

Flipping to the back reveals a circular array of health sensors, with the temperature sensor shifted towards the center.

Watch Band and Battery Improvements

Renders suggest the watch bands now integrate more seamlessly into the body.

Additionally, there are two button-like protrusions adjacent to the sensors, potentially for easier band removal compared to previous models.

  • Elon Musk threatens to ban Apple devices in Tesla offices over OpenAI integration.
  • Musk calls Apple’s partnership with OpenAI a security violation.
  • Musk criticizes Apple’s ability to protect user data with OpenAI.
  • Apple emphasizes privacy focus with new AI capabilities at WWDC.

Elon Musk has fired a warning shot at Apple, saying he will prohibit the tech giant’s devices at his companies if they integrate OpenAI’s artificial intelligence software at the operating system level.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO called such a move “an unacceptable security violation.”

His stern remarks came after Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI at its annual developers conference on Monday.

The deal will see ChatGPT integrated with Siri and made available for free across iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year.

No Control Over Data, Claims Musk

While Apple stressed its AI dubbed “Apple Intelligence” is built with privacy in mind, Musk questioned the iPhone maker’s ability to ensure OpenAI protects user data.

“Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river,” he stated on X (formerly Twitter).

Musk also claimed that visitors to his companies would have to store Apple devices in “a Faraday cage” due to the purported security risks of OpenAI integration at the OS level.

Bitter Split with OpenAI

The billionaire co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but had a messy split from the AI startup.

He sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman earlier this year, alleging it abandoned its non-profit mission.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft’s $13 billion investment, dismissed Musk as being jealous of its success.

In the AI arms race, Musk launched his own startup xAI last July to develop “Grok” – his own conversational AI aiming to “understand the universe.”

He has positioned Grok as an open source alternative aligned with his beliefs, doubling down on his offensive against OpenAI.

Apple Touts Privacy Focus

Apple emphasizes privacy focus with new AI capabilities at WWDC.

For its part, Apple maintained its new AI capabilities announced at WWDC put user privacy first. “All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence. It’s personal intelligence and it’s the next big step for Apple,” CEO Tim Cook stated regarding Apple Intelligence.

It seems that this stark warning from Musk will escalate tensions between major tech players racing to lead the generative AI revolution, with data privacy and security being a central battleground.

With the new Vitals app, Apple Watch users can quickly view key overnight health metrics, receive alerts when two or more metrics are out of their typical range, and gain better context when it comes to their health.

One of the key new features in watchOS 11 is the ability to adjust your Activity ring goals by day of the week.

This allows you to account for rest days while still maintaining your achievement streaks.

You can also set workouts to automatically alert a friend once completed safely, like a late night run.

Training Load Monitoring

In the Activity app, users can see how their training load for the most recent seven days compares to their 28-day training load, classified as well below, below, steady, above, or well above.

watchOS 11 introduces a “training load” metric that monitors your exercise intensity over time.

It uses an algorithm analysing heart rate, altitude, workout duration, age and weight to estimate your overall training effort level.

Revamped Health Tracking

When users log a pregnancy in the Health app on iPhone or iPad, the Cycle Tracking app on Apple Watch will show their gestational age and allow them to log symptoms for things frequently experienced during pregnancy.

The update includes a new Vitals app that provides an at-a-glance overview of your daily health data compared to historical norms.

If multiple metrics seem out of range, you’ll get a tailored message explaining how they could be impacting you.

For users tracking their cycles, watchOS 11 now shows estimated gestational age and pregnancy charts when applicable.

It also adjusts high heart rate notification thresholds accordingly.

Smarter Watch Faces and Live Activities

The Photos face can help users select their best photo options by analyzing thousands of photos using machine learning; then a custom algorithm finds the best composition.
