Meta announces security updates in Russia and Ukraine

0

After rolling out additional privacy and security protections in Ukraine, Meta has announced to add them in Russia as well. The decision has been taken in response to public reports targeting civil society and protesters.

Account Security

To protect themselves from being targeted by threat actors, Meta has recommended that people in Ukraine and Russia must take steps to strengthen the security of their online accounts.

They have been advised to be cautious while accepting friend requests and opening links and files from strangers and must refrain from using the same passwords across different services to prevent malicious hackers from gaining access to your information. Users have been recommended to use two-factor authentication on all online accounts.

Lock Your Profile

It is a one-step measure to lock your profile. Once you lock your profile unknown people cannot download enlarge or share profile photos, nor can they see posts or other photos on someone’s profile, regardless of when they posted it.

Meta has also said that their teams are working with civil society organizations to help ensure people know these tools are available.

Friends Lists

To help protect people from being targeted, Meta has temporarily removed the ability to view and search the friends’ lists of Facebook accounts.

Instagram Privacy and Security Reminders

Meta has started sending, a notification at the top of the feed about privacy and account security on Instagram. For public accounts, Meta is reminding people to check their settings in case they want to make their accounts private.

When someone makes their account private, any new followers will need to be approved, and only their followers will be able to see their posts and stories. Also, they are sharing tips on how to keep private accounts secure through strong passwords and two-factor authentication.

Coordinated inauthentic behavior

In the last 48 hours, Meta has taken down a relatively small network of about 40 accounts, Pages and Groups on Facebook and Instagram. They were operated from Russia and Ukraine and targeted people in Ukraine across multiple social media platforms and through their own websites.  The information has also been shared with other tech platforms, researchers, and governments.

This network used fake accounts and operated fictitious personas and brands across the internet — including on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Telegram, Odnoklassniki and VK — to appear more authentic in an apparent attempt to withstand scrutiny by platforms and researchers.

These fictitious personas used profile pictures likely generated using artificial intelligence techniques like generative adversarial networks (GAN). They claimed to be based in Kyiv and posed as news editors, a former aviation engineer, and an author of a scientific publication on hydrography — the science of mapping water. This operation ran a handful of websites masquerading as independent news outlets, publishing claims about the West betraying Ukraine and Ukraine is a failed state.

Hacking attempts by ghostwriter

In the past several days, ghostwriters have also started targeting people in Ukraine, including Ukrainian military and public figures. They target people through email compromise and then use that to gain access to their social media accounts and post disinformation as if it’s coming from the legitimate account owners.

Meta has detected attempts to target people on Facebook to post YouTube videos portraying Ukrainian troops as weak and surrendering to Russia.

Meta has also blocked phishing domains these hackers used to try to trick people in Ukraine into compromising their online accounts.

Chrome to ditch its data-saving mode on Android very soon!

0

Chrome will be retiring the services of its long time partner, Power-saving mode, very soon. Earlier, the lite mode was introduced to enhance the loading speed by compressing the pages. Also, some smartphone owners had tiered data plans and used to charge extra if users exceeded their allotted limit.

Chrome lite mode

With unlimited data plans, people are no longer using the Lite mode as before. Therefore, the company has decided to remove this feature for Android. Moreover, the company has also claimed in a statement that even if they’re removing the lite mode, Chrome still utilizes data-saving features with default settings, which is actually something great!

Truke Air Buds and Air Buds+ Review: More than enough features to die for in budget segment

0

German personal audio brand Truke is consistent with product launches in India, and is finally getting noticed by consumers, thanks to their high-end features in the budget segment. Continuing its trend of unveiling two devices at a time, Truke recently launched Air Buds and Air Buds+ in the country. The two new TWS earbuds promise premium user experience, with an array of top-notch features, 20 pre-defined EQ modes along with customizable EQ via smart application. They come with price tags of Rs 1,599 and Rs 1,699 respectively and offer a long-lasting battery life, a highlighting feature the brand is known for. We used these earphones for a couple of days, and here’s what we experienced so far.

Build and Design

Following the distinctive TWS design language, both the Air Buds and Air Buds+ offer a pebble-shaped charging case that easily slips into your pocket. Made of a high-quality plastic that is non-slippery, non-reflective and fingerprint-resistant, the case is painted black from outside and red inside.

The Air Buds+ offers a little bigger case than Air Buds, and this could be because of the presence of the digital display on the front of the former. The LED display – which lets you know the battery levels or charging status of the case and buds – happens to be the main distinguishing feature between the two models. On the other hand, the basic Air Buds offers a tiny LED notification light on the bottom of the case, which shows its battery level. Both the cases house a USB Type-C port on the bottom for charging the buds. The lid on the cases opens and closes gently, offering you a satiating experience.

Truke Air Buds and Air Buds+1

Now, moving to the earbuds of these TWS models, they are indistinguishable and have a plastic build and an in-ear design with a shiny finish. Weighing anywhere between 4-5gms, the buds are lightweight with the 10mm drivers on each side. The secure fit and feather light earphones are ergonomically built for all-day comfort and are tilted at 45 degree to provide the best possible fit in your ear canal. Besides the pre-installed medium-sized silicone ear tips, the company also offers a pair of small as well as large sized ear tips in the box, which a person can choose as per his/her ear canal size.

Akin to the earlier TWS offerings from the house of Truke, you get multifunctional touch sensors on the stem of both the earbuds, which also offers the company’s branding along its length. Furthermore, these earbuds come with IPX4 water resistant rating that makes them your ultimate companion for adventures.

Functionalities

Both the devices easily get paired with your phone via Bluetooth 5.1 technology. You need to open the earbuds case that automatically puts them in pairing mode, and then open the Bluetooth settings on your smartphone and connect to the Air Buds or Air Buds+. The connection range is nearly 10 meters, which is common in most wireless devices, and its quality, of course, is not bad.

Interestingly, these are the first Truke earbuds that come with support for an app called Tuya Smart, which appears to be a third party service that can connect to smart devices. It enables a couple of features as soon as connected via the app. You can select between 20 EQ modes, toggle gaming mode/music mode, and also turn on in-ear detection that works smoothly.

The touch panels present on these devices work precisely, letting you control play/pause, go to next or previous song, control volume, open Google Assistant and attend or disconnect calls.

Performance

In terms of performance, the call/sound quality is decent and the mic on both the earbuds pick up audio appropriately. Both the Air Buds and Air Buds+ come equipped with Quad MEMS mic along with deep neural network call noise cancellation technology, which precisely picks up sound waves using Artificial Intelligence. With the help of an adaptive algorithm, the voice of the caller is separated from other voices in real time, bringing a high quality calling experience. Both sides of the call can be heard clearly even in a clamorous environment.

You can operate these earbuds in two modes- gaming mode and music mode, and it can be switched from one mode to the other with a triple tap on the right earbud. In both modes, the earbuds communicate via the SBC codec, though in gaming mode, the latency is significantly lower (i.e. up to 55ms). These earbuds adopt high-precision contact sensor achieving real-time detection on wearing status. With in-ear detection, music plays/pauses automatically as you wear in/out the earbud ensuring that you never miss out on anything. You can turn on/off in-ear detection by tapping 3 times on left earbud and also from the app. The sound stage is well-adjusted for the most part with emphasis on the bass.

No call cut-offs, connection drops or sound breaking were experienced during our tests. Considering their prices, these TWS devices offer more than enough features and deliver par excellence performance.

Battery

Both the TWS models have a battery capacity of 40mAh in earbuds and 300mAh in the charging case, promising a playback time of up to 8-10 hours with a single charge and 48 hours of total playtime with the case. It takes around 2 hours to charge these devices fully via USB Type-C port, whereas the earbuds take nearly one hour to charge. Like their predecessors, both the Air Buds and Air Buds+ stand tall in this department.

Conclusion

Considering their prices, the Truke Air Buds and Air Buds+ are outstanding in almost every department. Among the top-notch smart features that they offer, sound quality is superb, both in terms of gaming and music modes. The app support with EQ pre-sets and find my buds make them even more special. Overall, they are more than the value for money products. If you have budget constraints, don’t think twice before grabbing any of these two models.

Asus 8Z finally coming to India today: Here’s what we know so far

0

After a series of leaks and rumours for nearly a year, Asus is finally launching the much-awaited Asus 8Z in India today. The Taiwanese handset maker has confirmed about this development through an official teaser on its Twitter handle, which says that the launch event will take place at 12:00 pm on February 28. The company has even sent My Mobile an invite to join the virtual launch today.

It must be noted that the Asus 8Z was unveiled as the Zenfone 8 back in May 2021 in the global market. The Asus Z series phones are known for their sleek, compact body, without compromising on power, and the company has mentioned about this in the tweet too – “We’re bringing you unparalleled performance into a compact sleek body”.

Expected price

If we talk about its price, the global variant i.e. Asus Zenfone 8 had a starting price of EUR 599 – which roughly translates into Rs 53,300 – at the time of its launch last year. However, if reports are to be believed, the Asus 8Z is expected to cost anywhere between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 in India. It will be up for grabs on ecommerce platform Flipkart and leading offline stores.

Expected specifications

Now that the Asus 8Z is coming to India as a rebranded Zenfone 8, it is likely to feature the same specifications. It could sport a 5.92-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 20:9 aspect ratio, along with support for Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and 120Hz refresh rate. The compact HDR10+ certified display also offers a peak brightness of 1100 nits and 240Hz touch sampling rate.

If the global variant is to go by, the upcoming smartphone will have Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and could feature up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Although the Asus Zenfone 8 runs Android 11-based ZenUI 8 out of the box, the Asus 8Z could run Android 12 out-of-the-box when it comes to the country.

In terms of optics, the smartphone features a dual-camera setup on the rear panel, having a 64MP f/1.8 Sony IMX686 primary sensor with OIS and a 12MP ultrawide camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The ultrawide sensor also takes macro shots. Up front, there is a punch-hole cutout for the 12MP front camera sensor for selfies and video calls.

The smartphone is backed by a 4,000mAh battery with 30W fast charging support. It also includes IP68 water and dust resistance, support for WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and a 3.5mm headphone port. Since the Zenfone 8 is available in Obsidian Black and Horizon Silver colour options in the global market, we could expect the same shades with the Asus 8Z too in India.

7 quirkiest and weirdest smartphones designs ever!

0

Mobile phones are a necessity of our day to day lives. Being an iPhone user for more than five years, I still look at this premium, influential yet uninspiring design and ask myself why I had the urge to buy it. We have many smartphones available today with supreme features, but they all look similar. We’ve more straightforward designs as brands are more focused to provide users with the latest features and strong processors.

Although at this point, I’ve understood I’m also interested in the software more than the hardware. However, there was a whole era when brands put more effort to make their phone look unique and mint with every curve. That was the time all the tech enthusiasts were always fascinated by how the upcoming launch will be different from the last one! They were a trendsetter of their times with unbeatable features and a quirky design.

7 weirdest yet quirkiest smartphone designs

The only innovation we get today is either in the brand logos or button placements on the device. Some also differ in colors or screen size, but this was not the case earlier. Well, we can’t bring the designs back, but we can have a reminisce series to know the unique designs ever made. Therefore, celebrate the remembrance series of the quirkiest yet unique designs of smartphones ever made with us!

LG G Flex

LG G Flex received many good reviews from critics and users because of its unique and fresh design. It had an intriguing shape that helped it stand out from the crowd. It sports a flexible screen technology with a commendable performance graph and high durability. G Flex also flaunts a powerful 888 Snapdragon processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Phew! A lot to offer back in the day as well.

LG_G Flex

Anyways, G Flex did get some negative reviews as people said that it has an unnecessarily large screen and a weird curved design. However, it was still one of its own kind!

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

A phone mixed with a camera making it a camera hybrid S4 Zoom makes for the quirkiest launch. The device was kind of heavy, defying the pocketability. However, it did show some great image capturing skills. In fact, the imaging was super strong paired with a good point-and-shoot camera.

samsung-galaxy-s4-zoom

The optical zoom on this one made it a more flexible camera than any other available smartphone. It had both auto and manual camera controls and was capable to takes video in Full HD at 1080p 30 fps. Users even get options to control the light exposure! Yeah, so much for a hybrid!

Haier P7

haier-p7

It looks like a pen, does it write? Of course not, but it does make calls! This slimmest and the little phone had a screen and space for a camera as well. I can’t say how the Chinese manufacturer designed and put it together, but it does look so unique. Furthermore, the device claimed to support GPRS and give 3 hours of talk time with 120 hours of standby time! Moreover, the cell phone has a small screen displaying 128×64 pixels, supporting a USB interface for upload and downloads.

Motorola StarTac Rainbow

StarTac rainbow

Let’s take a leap back to the 1990s. The Motorola StarTac Rainbow was launched breaking the basic color barriers of old phones available at that time. It came with a fresh flip design with colorful hardware resembling rainbow colors. The device was pretty simple as it doesn’t have any internet connectivity or Bluetooth connection. It was also thick and weak on connectivity. However, it was certainly loud enough to overshadow the dull and subtle styles before.

Samsung Matrix

Have you watched Matrix Reloaded? The Samsung Matrix resembled the one used in that movie! The crew working for the design of Matrix matched their efforts best to launch it with the release of the movie. It was not a mainstream phone used for daily activities, but it was more viewed as a fan collection.

Samsung matrix

Although, it did have some power-packed features that everyone loved. One of the most popular ones was the spring-loaded earpiece which always snaps out to reveal the screen. It could also be configured to use to answer incoming calls. Additionally, it came with a 1000mAh lithium-ion battery and language support like English and Spanish. A trendsetter, isn’t it?

Nokia 7280

Known globally as a ‘lipstick phone’, Nokia 7280 had something charming about it, undeniably. The design felt really futuristic, and a part of a Star Trek base, but loved by people a lot.

Nokia 7280

The 7280 was aimed at the fashion-forward crowd as it was a part of Nokia’s Fashion Phone line. The design was inspired by lipstick in red, black, and white. Furthermore, the screen was designed in a way that used to turn into a mirror when inactive. It has no keypad, but Nokia put a dial for people to navigate. Nokia 7280 was not a convenient device, but it certainly glamour the crowd with its unique looks.

Nokia N-Gage

We can never have enough options from Nokia in this list, right? The brand did give us some weirdest phones of all time. N-Gage also makes it to the list as it was the first gaming-centered phone launched in the market. The device was introduced to lure the gaming community away from ‘Game Boy Advance, offering them the capabilities of calling in their handheld gaming device.

Nokia-N Gage

The design resembled a lot to a Taco shell, thus it was called the Taco Phone. Well, the gaming idea didn’t go quite well with this one as the calling buttons were not well-suited for gaming. However, the ideation deserves five stars about having a cell phone that could do both your favorite things!

The smartphones now are powerful with heavy features, however these funky designs did have something. The list doesn’t ends here as the more we go back, the more interesting smartphones looked! Although, it’s universally believed that keeping things subtle is what we like, but we cannot deny the fact that smartphones looked much varied earlier. They were much more more fun!
