How the pandemic changed the market perception of refurbished devices in India

Refurbished Feature

Refurbished is a booming industry, and leading e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon are selling them. They are priced lower than new devices, but warranties also back them. The trend that started with refurbished phones and tablets has expanded to several other products, including home electronics and personal computers. This is why the country’s market size of refurbished products is close to $8 billion, and consumers do not hesitate to get their hands on refurbished products.

This article discusses why the market for refurbished products has emerged significantly in the past few years and is expected to surpass the $11 billion mark soon (only the electronics segment). In contrast, the sector has tremendous demand for other household and office products.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stimulating the overall demand for refurbished goods is tremendous. It can be summarized into cost considerations, increased demand, logistics gaps, increased digitalization, and improved e-waste management.

India is one of the largest adopters of digital technology, with almost 74% of the businesses agreeing that digitalization has helped improve the processes during the pandemic. Since working from home is a new norm, employees are no longer dependent on gadgets and devices offered by employers. There was an increase of 30% in demand for refurbished mobile phones in 2020. The cost-conscious Indian consumers were unwilling to spend too much on buying new products, thereby increasing the demand for refurbished products. There were logistics and supply chain gaps due to disruptions in the production and supply of microchips that also caused the demand for refurbished products to increase. Additionally, refurbishing electronic products can help address India’s significant waste management issue, as 95% of electronic waste is not recycled in the country.

“The emergence of a refurbished market can be primarily attributed to various factors, including greater digital adoption forced by the pandemic, the better quality of products, preferences of customers, the role of brands, and most importantly, the kind of services offered. Gradually, the refurbished products are becoming a valued choice, if not a preferred one”

Improved service and spare part quality for refurbished products: The emergence of an organized sector

A simple search on the leading e-commerce brands will provide options for a refurbished device that looks brand new. Such refurbished devices have been categorized in a new vertical added to the business model of such leading e-commerce brands.

Sellers offer refurbished products only after a thorough health checkup of the devices and provide the best-in-class after-sales services to consumers, including warranties, functional service-centres and dedicated CRM support. A seller-backed warranty ranges from 90 days to a year on such products. Hence, the consumer gets the cost-benefit and brand assurance while dealing with such products. Refurbished products’ sales and purchases have emerged as a new and organized sector. The companies working in the sector can source inputs and materials from different parts of the world due to their supply chain and logistics capabilities, thereby further enhancing the level of customer support.

Summing up

The emergence of a refurbished market can be primarily attributed to various factors, including greater digital adoption forced by the pandemic, the better quality of products, preferences of customers, the role of brands, and most importantly, the kind of services offered. Gradually, the refurbished products are becoming a valued choice, if not a preferred one. The majority of consumers no longer consider them as ‘used’ or ‘second-hand’ products, whose performance was inconsistent. Why? Because the products are more reliable and sold to the customers only after proper checks and quality assurance.

WhatsApp will soon let you edit your sent messages with this feature

0
WhatsApp edit

Editing a WhatsApp message once it is sent is impossible, but now it won’t be anymore. Yes, you heard it right! WhatsApp is working on its long-demanded edit feature for sent messages. WABetaInfo has also confirmed it!

The new rumoured edit feature will let the users edit all their sent messages and save themselves from falling the victim to many things. For instance, you can save yourselves from all the typos-embarrassments, silly grammar or spelling mistakes and much more. The feature is in the testing stage right now, so here’s what we know about it so far!

WhatsApp edit message feature: About

Recently, WABetaInfo flashed a report suggesting that the long-awaited edit feature is in testing mode. It also says that it is most likely to come to the beta version very soon. This newly added functionality will let users edit their sent messages. It is also going to help the platform catch up to its closest competitor, Telegram, which already has this edit feature.

WhatsApp edit message feature: About

Now, WhatsApp still offers ways to rectify any message mistake. It has the favourite “Delete for everyone” feature, where the user can delete any sent message before the receiver sees it. Another way is you can simply call it a typo error and mention what you actually planned to. The other one works well when you’re in a discussion and make any typo mistakes. With the new functionality, editing will become more streamlined and easy.

Reportedly, WhatsApp started working on the feature five years ago but the plan was postponed. However, now the app is dedicated to introducing the edit ability to its users.

WhatsApp edit message feature: How to use it

The WhatsApp edit feature is still in the development mode so we can’t say how this is going to work. However, WABetaInfo did share some images in their Twitter post, giving us an idea of how it is going to perform. Have a look!

It seems the feature will come as a dedicated button in the top bar, showing up alongside the options to copy text and forward the message when a message is long pressed.

WhatsApp edit message feature: Additional specs

Since we all have used Facebook’s edit comment feature, we know how it works. It does let the other person see if the comment has been edited. Hence, a general concern people talk about when any social platform offers such editing abilities is the awareness aspect. Will people be able to tell when a particular message is edited and is not the original version? For WhatsApp, the answer seems to be a ‘no’.

As per a report by WABetaInfo, “Probably there won’t be an edit history to check previous versions of edited messages, but since this feature is under development, their plans may change before releasing the feature.” It also suggests that edited messages could look just like regularly sent messages.

The report also says that just like there’s a time limit for deleting the sent messages, the editing feature will also have one. However, the limits are “unknown at the moment.” The report adds that the edit button will first make it to the iOS and Desktop beta builds. However, we expect it to come to Android beta builds also later on. Either way, it will likely be quite some time before we see the feature on stable versions.

Here’s how a Delhi-based D2C startup is simplifying everyday tech-related issues

0
Pankaj Garg - DailyObjects

“DailyObjects adds delight to a consumer’s life by offering products that simplify everyday tech-related issues”

New Delhi-headquartered DailyObjects has carved a niche for itself in the accessories segment by offering products that are peripherals to the consumer devices made by top tech brands of the world. The products are design-led, highly-functional, and well-thought-out answers to consumers’ day-to-day needs. Being present in diverse categories such as mobile and laptop accessories, home office and organization solutions, to name a few, DailyObjects intends to be one of the leading tech lifestyle brands globally. Ramesh Kumar Raja caught up with Pankaj Garg, Co-founder and CEO, DailyObjects, to know more about the brand, its product offerings and future projections. Excerpts:

Tell us about the idea behind setting the foundation of DailyObjects.

I and Saurav Adlakha tapped into the emerging trend of online shopping and digitalization. The e-commerce industry was still in its nascent stage, but we decided to take the leap of faith and started an online business. DailyObjects was started in 2012 with the core idea of offering products that one could use in his/her everyday life. We exist to add delight to a consumer’s life by offering products that simplify everyday tech-related issues. We started with mobile cases but kept expanding the offerings as the business grew.

We believe every day comes with new opportunities, chapters, and journeys and it deserves to be special. We provide designs that are usable, relevant, and created with research that is not just products but in fact solutions for the consumers. Be it working from home, working from the office, or even stepping out for a brunch, with our products, your day will transform significantly. Our goal is to dispel myths and misconceptions about great design, such as the idea that a good design can only be owned and enjoyed by those who can afford to spend a lot of money.

You offer a wide range of product categories. Can you please tell us about them?

We provide a variety of goods that are design-led, highly-functional, and well-thought-out answers to consumers’ day-to-day needs. We are now present in diverse categories such as mobile and laptop accessories, home office and organization solutions, bags, and wallets. Our aim is to provide high-end products for unlocking the realms of possibilities whenever possible.

How is DailyObjects different from others in the segment?

Being a design-obsessed brand, our focus is to deliver the best-designed functional products in India. Our constant endeavour is to remain agile and evolve the brand in response to changing consumer aspirations, markets, etc.

We have collaborated with over 500 craftspeople to meet the daily needs of over 2 million clients and users worldwide. We do everything in-house for most of our products and thus have developed robust systems to support that. Investing in our manufacturing facility in Delhi-NCR gives us the liberty to experiment and pick newer trends rapidly. It also helps us gain great control over the quality of products and efficient fulfilment to end consumers.

Can you please tell us about your idea behind making it a D2C brand?

The core design philosophy at DailyObjects is to build a world class product which shall be appreciated by an enthusiastic consumer beyond borders. Our brand’s categories revolve around the devices used by millions of people around the world, that’s why we are witnessing the demand from global communities, resellers and corporates.

“The core design philosophy at DailyObjects is to build a world class product which shall be appreciated by an enthusiastic consumer beyond borders. Our brand’s categories revolve around the devices used by millions of people around the world, that’s why we are witnessing the demand from global communities, resellers and corporates”

What do you think are the challenges in the D2C industry?

D2C is the go-to solution for new age brands wanting to create a robust consumer connection. However, walking on this path comes with its fair share of struggles. With the rise in e-com adoption consumers want everything right away with best in class quality. Thus, demand is less of an issue than the supply, control over sourcing, manufacturing and distribution is key for the success in D2C as in our case this gives us liberty to mitigate any shortages, quality issues etc. to leverage growth levers based on high consumer satisfaction management.

How has consumer behaviour changed during the pandemic?

Ever since the pandemic broke out, consumers have been cautious and conscious about their choices. They have been inclined toward online shopping more than ever. They now demand quick service yet that is effective, no-contact but doorstep delivery, and customized experiences.

What’s the concept behind product design and quality for customers?

We are known for our design innovation. All the products are designed and manufactured in India. We design products keeping into consideration the problem and how our offering will be a solution for the same in an aesthetically pleasing manner. We believe in resolving problems with our design. We are also of the view that the products should be durable, practical and must add wow factor to the consumers’ lives.

How are you leveraging technology to innovate the products?

As our products are peripherals to the consumer devices made by top tech brands of the world, we’ve built our R&D practices to challenge ourselves in seeking what’s the best and up to date way to make each of our products every time we launch something new. By investing in high tech manufacturing machinery we’ve not only improved the print, build and aesthetics aspects but also reduced the lead time for being fulfilment ready. This helps us in gaining the confidence of customers as well as gives us liberty to test more and more variations to come up with best in class final products.

What are your future projections?

We have had exponential growth of 300% last year while remaining profitable. We are happy with all the milestones we have achieved and that we intend to earn in the times to come. We are aiming to breach 100 Cr in sales run rate by the end of 2022 and register a 20x growth in the next five years. We intend to be one of the leading tech lifestyle brands in this category globally.

Google Doodle today: Google honours the great Satyendra Nath Bose, Indian scientist and mathematician with an interesting doodle

Google Doodle today: Google honours the great Satyendra Nath Bose, Indian scientist and mathematician with an interesting doodle

Google honours the renowned Indian scientist and mathematician Satyendra Nath Bose with an interesting and interactive doodle today on Saturday, June 4 2022. He was among the most popular physicists in the country. The doodle pays tribute to Bose highlighting his contribution to the Bose-Einstein Condensate.

In 1924, on this same day, Bose sent his long-researched quantum formulations to Albert Einstein. Einstein didn’t make him wait and recognised all his formulations as important breakthroughs in quantum mechanics instantly.

Satyendra Nath Bose: Early life, academic history, and other information

Starting with Bose’s early life, his achievements in academics were always appreciated. It kind of laid the groundwork for his journey to fame. He was a bright student. Starting his school days, Bose’s father helped him get more focused on maths. He was an accountant and used to write him an arithmetic problem for him to solve before leaving for work. This surely helped in fueling Bose’s interest in mathematics.

Hence, at the age of 15, Bose began to pursue his Bachelor of Science degree at Presidency College in Calcutta. Later on, he also got a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Calcutta. As expected, Bose was the topper of his class in both.

After completing his studies, he started teaching postgraduate students Planck’s radiation formula. His teaching not only involved reading and writing from books, but it was also the way more interactive and unique. He used to question the way particles were counted and began experimenting with his own theories. He documented his findings in a report called Planck’s Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quanta and sent it to a prominent science journal called The Philosophical Magazine. To his surprise, his research was rejected. At that moment, he made the bold decision to mail his paper directly to Albert Einstein.

Einstein indeed recognized the significance of the discovery instantly and soon applied Bose’s formula to a wide range of phenomena. This led to making Bose’s theoretical paper becoming one of the most important findings in quantum theory. Even the Indian government recognized Bose’s immense contribution to physics by awarding him one of the highest civilian awards in the country, the Padma Vibhushan. Later on, he was appointed as National Professor, the highest honour in India for scholars.

Bose was a true polymath serving in various governments’ scientific institutions. He served as the president of the Indian Physical Society, National Institute of Science, Indian Science Congress and the Indian Statistical Institute. Furthermore, he also served as an adviser to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and later became a Fellow of the Royal Society. In honour of Bose’s legacy, any particle that conforms with his statistics today is known as a boson. Many scientific breakthroughs have come from his work including the discovery of the particle accelerator and the God particle.

Meet the Co-founder of India’s only multi-modal transit app that helps you with real-time public transport information and last-mile connectivity

0
Hiranmay Mallick - Tummoc

“Tummoc strives to make public transport commutes seamless across the country”

Tummoc is the first Made-in-India multi-modal patented transit app to help you with real-time public transport information and last-mile connectivity. Launched in January 2021, Tummoc is the answer to the hassle of regular transportation options and the struggle to find reasonably priced short term rides. The absurdity of a 20-minute wait for a 10-minute ride in the metro or a bus, and difficulties in fulfilling the first and last mile requirements when using public transport, formed the base of the Tummoc experience. Tummoc intends to make public transport more accessible to you by creating a data-driven, all-in-one transit platform, thus solving the problems faced by millions of commuters through end-to-end connectivity and an efficient commute. Hiranmay Mallick, Co-founder and CEO, Tummoc, explains more about this platform, in a chit-chat with Ramesh Kumar Raja. Excerpts:

What is Tummoc all about and how consumer-centric is it?

Tummoc is India’s only patented multi-modal transit application to help commuters with real-time public transport information, last-mile connectivity and single journey ticketing. Tummoc helps you to track and find actionable and accurate bus/metro/suburban rail intra-city travel information.

We strive to make public transport commutes seamless across the country, and eventually across the globe. Currently, we’re doing this solely for the commoners to help them plan their end-to-end intra-city travel while making the most of available public transport infrastructure. Find accurate information on buses, metros, and other modes of public transport in your city.

What are the unique features that make it different from others in the given segment?

Some of the unique features include live tracking, ticketing, and giving information about fares, timing and location, which make it different from others in the given segment. Our goal is to do this not just for the sake of commuters, but also for the environment. Public transport is significantly more planet-friendly and reduces carbon emissions by a lot.

Our goal is to do this not just for the sake of commuters, but also for the environment. Public transport is significantly more planet-friendly and reduces carbon emissions by a lot”

How has been the response so far in terms of downloads that it has accumulated on Google Play and App Store?

We are receiving tremendous response from commuters and have crossed half a million-user in the beginning of the month and adding another 100K by the end of this month. We are getting positive response from Bangalore users since the time we have launched online booking of BMTC Bus passes through our app. Our ratings are going up on Play Store and App Store. Our next milestone is to reach 1 million users. The team is working hard to get this done in the next few months.

How did the idea of Tummoc strike you and what were the initial challenges of coming up with a concept that’s very new to India?

Tummoc was started as Bykerr in 2016 which was solely a first and last-mile connectivity app. It was an operations-savvy company that primarily focused on ride booking. Between its inception and 2020, Bykerr received various awards, accolades and grants such as the Best Startup of Karnataka, Toyota Mobility Award for Best Startup and a grant for the Best Startup.

Tummoc went live after rebranding from Bykerr in January 2021, and despite the pandemic, it managed to grow its user base to 50k in June. By August, it had doubled to 100k. In September, our first patent got approved for “System and Method for Multi-Modal Trip Planning with First and Last Mile Connectivity.

Can you please tell us about the cities where Tummoc operates as of now? What are your expansion plans?

Currently, we are operating in Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. Soon, we will be launching in more cities such as Delhi.

What are the important features that you are currently working on to make Tummoc even better in terms of services that it offers?

We are also working on a feature in the app where users get an option to customize their rides. For example, a user can tell us that he needs a minimum walking distance for the first file, or ask for a suggestion where the first mile is not needed. And we give him all the options of reaching his closest public transportation mode without using the first mile. All this is a work in progress. We will soon be enabling such a feature in the app.

How do you look at the opportunities ahead, especially when your mobile phone is the gateway to everything?

Exciting times ahead, but lots of works we are doing at backend, not everything can be disclosed at this point. We will be making our product more seamless with addition of new features as per the users’ feedback which we have been receiving lately.

More than opportunities we would like to focus on adding more and more solutions for our daily commuters to make their life hassle free. Opportunities will automatically be created. Surely, mobile phones are the getaway to everything; hence we are trying to make our transit system reach more and more cities so that they can easily plan their intra-city commute from their comfort of home.

What are you doing on the publicity front to increase its recall value?

The transit application is for the commoners and by the commoners of the country. So, along with all the major social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Medium, Koo, Twitter, Instagram, we are trying to explore vernacular platforms like local newspapers, local news, Public, FM to name a few. Due to the pandemic, not too much offline marketing has happened yet. But, we are already working on it and should start soon.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales are officially coming to PC

It’s finally happening! After such long anticipations and discussions, PC players can now get a taste of Marvel’s popular web-slinging avenger in all its glory. Sony has officially announced that its Spider-Man series, including Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales, is coming to PC. And the great thing is that the fans don’t even have to wait for that much. Both the titles were recently launched as PlayStation exclusives.

This comes fresh following the last month when three of the PS exclusive titles are turning soon into TV series adaptations. Also, just like God of War on PC, other game studios seem way too enthusiastic about tapping the PC player market as well.  Either way, fans are welcoming the change with open arms. With that, let’s see what we should expect.

Spider-Man Remastered PC game date announced

This is definitely celebration time for the fans. With Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered joining the other PlayStation-exclusive games like God of War, Days Gone, and Horizon: Zero Dawn, the PC gaming is getting really strong and bold. If you still recall, the first modern-day Spider-Man game was released back in 2018. Also, it was exclusively launched for PS4 and PS5. Just after a year of its release, it has already sold over 33 million copies globally (as of May 2022). However, you can expect this record to finally get overshadowed by the remastered launch on PC. The game is coming on August 12, 2022. Here’s a short teaser of what the future holds:

Although, there’s still information required to get a check on all the minimum and recommended system requirements to run the game. However,  considering its open-world factor and the complex mechanics, they should be similar to any AAA title released this year. As per the PlayStation blog, the PC release will have adjustable graphics paired with RTX support. It will also have support for the keyboard and mouse. The same stays true for the second title of the series too.

Spider-Man Miles Morales is Coming to PC in 2023

The second title of the series, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will also reach to all PC users in the coming Fall of 2022. The brand is still to release official footage, exact release date, or other details for the same. In fact, this title wasn’t even announced in the State of Play showcase. Instead, developer Insomniac Games confirmed it later in a post on the PlayStation blog.

Miles Morales is Coming to PC in 2023

We expect both of these titles to use the expanded prospects of the powerful PC platform to get us more polished gameplay. Other than the main titles, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will release with the Marvel’s Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps DLC that adds three additional chapters to our protagonist’s story.

With that, the world of “exclusive” titles seems to be at its end. And the thing is, these titles are now only getting bolder and bigger. What more are you expecting? Tell us in the comments down below.
