Redmi 13C 5G Review

Highlights

  • Offers affordable 5G connectivity at just Rs 10,999.
  • Long-lasting battery life with a day’s power on a single charge.
  • Features a 90Hz refresh rate for smooth display performance.
  • Unique design with gradient finish and geometric patterns.

Xiaomi delivered a pleasant surprise with the launch of the Redmi 13C 5G last December as a competitively priced 5G smartphone that doesn’t break the bank.

With a starting price of just Rs 10,999 for the 4GB + 128GB configuration, the Redmi 13C not only makes 5G accessibility a reality for many but also stands out by offering up to 256GB of inbuilt storage—a feature that’s becoming increasingly important for long-term usage.

Despite its appealing price and storage capacity, the Redmi 13C 5G is a straightforward device in other respects.

However, beyond its technical specifications, Xiaomi has put some effort into making the Redmi 13C 5G stand out with a touch of creativity.

In this review, let’s try and find out if the Redmi 13C 5G can make a mark and if you should buy it two months after its release.

The Redmi 13C truly brings a touch of the flagship experience to the budget segment, marking a significant leap from its predecessor, the Redmi 12C.

As I explored this new addition, I was immediately struck by its aesthetic charm.

The gradient finish and the intricate geometric patterns that emerged under the light added a dynamic shimmering effect, beautifully transitioning between shades of green and yellow.

This design choice not only elevates the phone’s visual appeal but also maintains a clean and sophisticated look, with just the camera module and a discreet Redmi logo adorning the rear panel.

Redmi 13C: Side Buttons

Redmi has gone above and beyond to ensure attention to detail and design excellence, even at a more accessible price point.

However, I immediately noticed the absence of an Infrared transmitter, a feature I had come to appreciate in previous Redmi devices.

While the phone retains other standard features, such as the 3.5mm headphone jack, it introduces a side-mounted physical fingerprint scanner.

Additionally, the sleek glass design, while visually appealing, made the phone feel slippery in my hands.

The contrast between the sharp edges and the smooth mid-frame seemed to exacerbate this issue, compromising the grip.

Redmi 13C 5G: Display

Redmi 13C 5G: Display
Redmi 13C 5G: Display

Exploring the Redmi 13C 5G’s display capabilities offered a mixed bag of impressions.

The device boasts a sizable 6.74-inch LCD screen, a feature that’s quite impressive for an entry-level smartphone.

This screen is not just large; it’s also bright, with support for up to 600 nits of peak brightness, a specification not commonly found in the budget segment.

As I spent time with the device, watching videos on YouTube and shows on Netflix, the benefits became evident.

YouTube videos appeared crisp at high resolutions, or at least as crisp as one can hope for at this price.

I also noticed that Netflix playback could benefit from further optimisation.

As someone accustomed to the sharper visuals offered by Full HD displays, I found the Redmi 13C’s resolution a bit lacking.

However, for most, the HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate will be more than adequate.

The inclusion of a 90Hz refresh rate, in particular, was a pleasant surprise.

Switching from the standard 60Hz to 90Hz noticeably smoothed out my scrolling and navigating experience, adding a layer of fluidity that enhanced overall usability.

Redmi 13C 5G: Cameras

Redmi 13C 5G: Cameras
Redmi 13C 5G: Cameras

As far as the optical apparatus on the Redmi 13C goes,  it’s clear that Xiaomi has focused more on delivering performance and fast internet speeds rather than an expansive camera system, which is fine in my opinion.

Budget phones were never known for their image-capturing prowess anyway.

The device features a rear camera setup that includes a 50MP primary camera and a 2MP depth sensor but omits an ultra-wide lens.

The front houses a 5MP AI selfie camera, which, despite its modest resolution, can capture vibrant and detailed shots under the right conditions.

During my time with the Redmi 13C 5G, I observed that the camera software tends to favour high saturation, resulting in images with a warm, maroonish tint.

This approach makes most shots look lively and attractive, though it often comes at the cost of accuracy and detail, especially under bright sunlight where exposure tends to be unbalanced, leading to overblown highlights and loss of detail.

I also put a workaround to enhance sharpness in images by activating night mode even in well-lit conditions.

While the dynamic range and focus speed could be improved, especially in lower light conditions, the night mode performance itself was commendable, effectively retaining colours and details without significant blowouts.

However, when it comes to real low-light photography, the phone presents more challenges, with a noticeable reduction in colour vibrancy and an increase in noise.

Similarly, the selfie camera’s performance also dips in dim lighting, with difficulties in accurately capturing skin tones.

A highlight of my experience was using the portrait mode.

The Redmi 13C 5G impressively blurs the background, creating a pleasing depth effect even without a dedicated depth sensor.

While edge detection isn’t flawless, leading to occasional inaccuracies, the overall performance is remarkable for a device at this price point.

Redmi 13C 5G: Performance and Software

The heart of the Redmi 13C 5G is the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ SoC, a choice that delivers a balance between affordability and performance.

In my review, I found the processor to offer modest processing capabilities.

Day-to-day tasks are manageable, though not without some stutters and lags, particularly noticeable when switching between apps or using Google Assistant.

However, these minor performance hiccups don’t significantly detract from the overall usability of everyday work.

Gaming on the Redmi 13C 5G was a pleasant surprise.

Casual games like Subway Surfers ran with no noticeable lag, and even more graphics-intensive games were playable, albeit with expected limitations.

I was provided with the 256GB storage and 8GB RAM variant, which makes background apps last for a long time on the device.

Of course, 5G is a trademark selling point on the device and I faced absolutely no issues using it on Delhi’s Airtel 5G network.

Typing on the device was responsive, with no discernible delay, contributing to a smooth user experience.

The user interface, characterized by large app icons and text, presents a mostly clean and uncluttered environment, making it easy for users to navigate and adapt to the phone’s system.

One aspect of the device that stood out was its thermal management.

Despite engaging in performance-intensive activities such as gaming and running benchmarks, the Redmi 13C 5G remained remarkably cool, a feature I have seen rarely in this price segment.

However, the software experience, based on Android 13 with the MIUI 14 skin, left room for improvement.

As usual, the presence of bloatware and frequent ads, including on the lock screen, detracted me from a fluid user experience.

These included promotional content for various apps, from games to news.

While these can be removed, the initial presence might be off-putting for some users.

Redmi 13C 5G: Battery

Redmi 13C 5G: Battery
Redmi 13C 5G: Battery

My experience with the Redmi 13C 5G’s battery life was more than acceptable.

It houses a 5,000mAh battery with support for up to 18W fast charging, although it’s worth noting that the included charger is rated for only 10W. Despite this, the battery’s endurance was remarkable.

Whether I was putting it through a battery stress test or simply going about my day-to-day activities, the device consistently delivered a full day’s use.

This was under conditions that typically drain battery life quickly: operating with a 5G SIM, the high refresh rate activated, and the brightness set to 80 percent.

For users with basic smartphone needs, the Redmi 13C 5G’s battery life will be more than satisfactory.

It’s clear that Xiaomi has optimized the device for longevity, which is a crucial aspect for many.

The Redmi 13C 5G stands as a building block to Xiaomi’s commitment to bringing 5G connectivity and generous storage options to the budget smartphone segment.

Despite its modest performance and software clutter, it impresses with its design, display refresh rate, and battery life.

It’s an excellent choice for budget smartphone buyers or those prioritising battery life and design over extremely high-end specs.

The charging case, sporting a rectangular design with rounded edges, is pocket-friendly and features a matte finish.

This look is attributed to an NCVM coating and CO2 laser engraving, which offers a distinctive metallic texture that adeptly balances light and shadow.

Weighing in at 40.3 grams, I found the case to be quite portable and it is equipped with a small LED indicator and a USB Type-C port at the back.

Upon opening the case, the earbuds’ slots are marked for the left and right earbuds, alongside a central function button.

The Buds 3 are more than ideal for outdoor activities and the IP55 rating offers some protection against dust and water, although the case lacks such certification.

Featuring Bluetooth 5.3 and LHDC 5.0 codec, the OnePlus Buds 3  makes it a point that it packs high-quality sound on supported devices.

As per usual OnePlus standards, the pairing process is straightforward, especially for OnePlus devices (6 and later), with a fast pair option for the latest Android phones.

I paired it on my iPhone and faced no issues except that there is no Fast Pair. What I did like quite a lot is that the earbuds support dual connection, allowing for seamless audio switching between two devices.

Control customisation is available through the settings on OnePlus, OPPO, or realme phones, or via the Hey Melody app on devices like iPhones.

The controls offer flexibility in managing playback, calls, and noise-cancellation modes.

I have to say that the HeyMelody app is more than intuitive offering various functionalities like 3D Audio mapping and Golden Sound customisation.

You can also adjust and make custom EQs while fiddling around with the earbuds fit test to get the best out the Buds 3.

OnePlus Buds 3: Connectivity, Pairing, and Controls
OnePlus Buds 3: Connectivity & Controls

I will talk about these features in more detail in the audio quality section of the review.

As far as the actual controls go, the OnePlus Buds 3 feature intuitive inputs that are easy to remember and use.

On both the left (L) and right (R) earphones, a single tap will play or pause your music.

If you’re looking to skip to the next track or answer a call (and hang up afterwards), a double tap on either earbud will do the trick.

For those times when you want to go back to the previous track, simply triple-tap.

If you need to enable noise cancellation or switch between its modes to better suit your environment, pressing and holding either earbud for 1 second will get the job done.

Additionally, pressing and holding for 3 seconds allows you to switch the connected device or reject incoming calls, providing a seamless and versatile listening experience.

OnePlus Buds 3: Audio Quality, ANC, and Microphone

Now coming to the meat of the matter, the Buds 3 pack in dual driver setup, comprising a 10.4mm dynamic driver and a 6mm planar diaphragm tweeter, promises an expansive frequency range from 15Hz to 40KHz.

In my listening experience, the sound quality is characterised by crisp vocals and balanced bass, with OnePlus Audio ID 2.0 allowing for personalized audio tuning.

I especially enjoyed all of the heavy bass EDM and Hip/Hop tracks with great clarity.

Although lacking spatial audio with head tracking, the OnePlus Buds 3 introduces a feature called Golden Sound which can be accessed in the Hey Melody app.

It amplifies the audio experience by tailoring a sound profile to your individual hearing capabilities.

This profile enhanced the audio quality for me, bringing out more pronounced highs and offering a superior listening experience compared to the standard sound signature of OnePlus

For those with current OnePlus devices, the addition of Dolby Atmos and the ability to switch between multiple sound profiles further enriches the audio experience on their smartphones or tablets.

However, for my taste, the Buds 3 lacks a very spacious soundstage with instrument separation not coming out to be very nuanced.

The bass tends to muffle the highs which can put a damper on some of the classical rock numbers I love to listen to.

Even with OnePlus 3D Audio which should broaden the soundstage, providing a more expansive audio experience, there is a slight airy quality to the music, which, while adding a sense of space, may detract from the naturalness of the sound for some listeners.

In terms of the bitrate on offer OnePlus asserts that when using LHDC, it supports a maximum bit depth of 24-bit and a sampling rate of 96kHz, with a bitrate up to 1Mbps.

The bitrate can be adjusted in increments of 400kbps, 500kbps, 900kbps, and 1000kbps.

The 400kbps and 500kbps modes are quite practical if you opt to activate them manually.

The 900kbps mode is generally reliable when you’re near your phone, although occasional hiccups may occur, which may take a few seconds to rectify.

The ANC feature effectively reduces ambient noise, offering up to 49dB noise cancellation.

The Max setting delivers the best performance by utilising full power to significantly reduce ambient noise across a wide frequency range.

It diminishes low and mid-frequency sounds, although some high-frequency noises like ambulance sirens or bird chirping remain perceptible, albeit not to a distracting degree.

Finally, the Transparency mode proves invaluable for maintaining conversations and increasing situational awareness in social environments and while walking, making it a practical feature for everyday use.

The earbuds provide up to 10 hours of playback, but with ANC this was reduced to about 6 hours.

In my time using it the fast charging delivered 7 hours of playback with just 10 minutes of charging, a notable convenience

The preference for the Galaxy A14 4G over its 5G counterpart indicates a market segment where 4G capabilities meet consumer needs adequately, particularly at a lower price point.

What’s notably absent from the list are the Galaxy S23 models, which suggests that Samsung’s flagship series may not hit it off with consumers as strongly in 2023 as the company might have hoped.

Even more troubling is the fact that the Galaxy S23 series actually had a 9-month headstart on the iPhone 15 series and even then it was unable to make the list.

Perhaps, Samsung could be trying a different strategy with the recently released Galaxy S24 to boost those sales numbers up.

FAQs

Q: Which smartphone was the top seller in 2023 according to Canalys?

A: The iPhone 14 Pro Max led global smartphone sales in 2023 with 34 million units shipped.

Q: How did the iPhone 15 series perform in the market?

A: The iPhone 15 series performed strongly, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max nearly matching the sales of the iPhone 14 Pro Max despite being newer to the market.

Q: What does the preference for the Galaxy A14 4G suggest about consumer trends?

A: Consumers’ choice of the Galaxy A14 4G suggests a significant demand for 4G capabilities in certain market segments, particularly where price sensitivity is a factor.

Q: Why might the Galaxy S23 series have been absent from the top-selling list?

A: The absence of the Galaxy S23 series from the list could indicate that it didn’t resonate as strongly with consumers, despite its early release in the year compared to Apple’s models.

Q: iPhone 15 Pro Max will still be the best-selling model in early 2024, says Kuo.Details?

A: The iPhone 15 Pro Max will still be the highest-selling iPhone model in the first half of 2024, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, with its special telephoto lens being highly profitable to supply chain partner Largan.

The premium models of iPhone tend to be the big sellers for Apple, and for the iPhone 15 Pro models, it’s no exception. In analysis of Apple’s camera lens supplier Largan, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the Pro Max model is benefiting from sales the most.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max will “still account for 40-45% of iPhone 15 shipments in 1H24,” writes Kuo in a Medium post discussing Largan on Monday. As it turns out, that particular model is very financially beneficial to the supplier, and “critical” to its off-season financial results.

The tetraprism lens arrangement in the Pro Max model is expected to increase Largan’s revenue by NT$3.4 billion to NT$3.8 billion ($108.8 million to $121.7 million) in the first half of the year, says Kuo. “This lens alone could contribute to Largan’s 20-25% YoY revenue growth in 1H24,” he continues.

That lens will be used in more iPhones in the 2024 releases, Kuo said in an early December note. Both Pro models of iPhone 16 will apparently use it.

Largan’s yield of the lens will also continue to improve throughout the period, which will help Largan’s profits further.

This situation with the iPhone 15 Pro Max also means Largan has a “rare positive view of off-season demand for high-end lenses,” Kuo adds, when viewing the business overall.

Largan is anticipated to beat seasonality for the first half of 2024, with a 30% to 40% year-on-year revenue growth and a gross margin above 50%.

Q: What was Apple’s market share in the premium smartphone segment in 2023?

A: In 2023, Apple held a dominant 71% share in the premium smartphone market, a slight decrease from 75% in the previous year, showcasing its continued market leadership.

Q: How did the iPhone 15 Pro Max perform in the Chinese smartphone market?

A: In October, the iPhone 15 Pro Max unexpectedly led China’s smartphone market, securing a 5% market share.

This is particularly notable given the market’s usual preference for local brands like Huawei.

Q: Which other Apple models ranked in the top five in China?

A: Alongside the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 also made it to the top five best-selling smartphones in China, holding 4% and 3% market shares, respectively.

WhatsApp Reportedly Set to Enable Cross-Platform Messaging: What You Need to Know

Highlights

  • WhatsApp to introduce messaging across platforms like Signal and Telegram.
  • Feature activation requires user consent and isn’t default.
  • Cross-app chats are to be stored in a separate “third-party chats” inbox.
  • Interoperability depends on third-party services agreeing to Meta’s terms.

WhatsApp is on the verge of introducing a groundbreaking feature that will enable users to send messages across different platforms, such as Signal and Telegram.

This development is propelled by the European Union’s mandate requiring Meta to open up its messaging services by March, a directive that’s also prompting Apple to diversify iPhone app sourcing in Europe.

Despite the anticipation, the specifics of how this cross-messaging functionality will materialize have been somewhat elusive, with only some speculation coming from WhatsApp beta versions until now.

Brouwer, who has experience with Meta’s encryption rollout for its Messenger app, said: There’s real tension between offering an easy way to offer this interoperability to third parties whilst at the same time preserving the WhatsApp privacy, security, and integrity bar. I think we’re pretty happy with where we’ve landed.

Cross-Platform Messaging: A New Frontier

Cross-Platform Messaging: A New Frontier
Cross-Platform Messaging: A New Frontier

Dick Brouwer, an engineering director at WhatsApp, recently shed light on how this integration might function in practical terms during an interview with Wired.

WhatsApp users can engage in conversations with users of other encrypted messaging services.

However, this feature requires user consent to activate and won’t be available by default.

Navigating the Integration

WhatsApp Reportedly Set to Enable Cross-Platform Messaging
WhatsApp Reportedly Set to Enable Cross-Platform Messaging

The integration process introduces a notable distinction in user experience.

Instead of merging all conversations into a single inbox, messages from third-party apps will be allocated to a distinct “third-party chats” section.

This separation necessitates additional steps to access these conversations, a decision attributed to WhatsApp’s inability to ensure equivalent privacy and security standards across all platforms.

The Path to Interoperability

Cross-app chats are to be stored in a separate "third-party chats" inbox
Cross-app chats are to be stored in a separate “third-party chats” inbox

For cross-app messaging to be feasible, third-party services must agree to a set of terms laid out by Meta.

The specifics of these agreements remain undefined, and it’s going to be totally possible that some platforms might resist entering into such arrangements with Meta.

As you would have it, Apple is reluctant to integrate iMessages into this system, considering it has always been opposed to similar cross-platform initiatives.

Brouwer mentioned a preference for the Signal encryption protocol, already utilized by WhatsApp, Messenger, Google Messages, and Skype, suggesting a readiness for interoperability among these services.

Nonetheless, platforms employing different encryption methods might be hesitant to switch, though Meta is open to considering alternative encryption standards provided they meet WhatsApp’s security criteria.

FAQs

Q: How will WhatsApp’s cross-platform messaging work?

A: Users will be able to send messages to and receive messages from other encrypted messaging services like Signal and Telegram, upon opting in to this feature.

Q: Will all my chats be in one place with cross-platform messaging?

A: No, messages from third-party apps will appear in a designated “third-party chats” inbox within WhatsApp, separate from regular WhatsApp conversations.

Q: What do other messaging platforms need to do to become interoperable with WhatsApp?

A: They must agree to a set of terms defined by Meta, which may include adopting certain encryption protocols like the Signal encryption protocol used by WhatsApp.

Q: Can I automatically start using this feature once it launches?

A: No, users will need to manually opt in to activate cross-platform messaging functionality within WhatsApp.

Q: Will Apple’s iMessage be part of WhatsApp’s cross-platform messaging?

A: It’s unlikely, as Apple has historically been resistant to participating in similar cross-platform messaging initiatives.

Q: WhatsApp Cross-App Chatting How will it work ?

A: While the exact details are still under wraps, here’s what is known so far:

Opt-in Required: You won’t be automatically enrolled in cross-app chat. You’ll need to opt-in to activate the feature.

Separate Inboxes: Don’t expect a unified inbox. Messages from other apps will appear in a separate “third-party chats” section, maintaining WhatsApp’s privacy standards.

Technical Hurdles: Integrating different protocols and ensuring security across platforms is a complex challenge. Expect some bumps along the road.

Q: What are the disadvantages of Whatsapp Cross App Chatting ?

A: Mixing platforms with varying privacy levels raises questions about data security.

Cross-app features might be restricted compared to native app experiences.
Separate inboxes might be inconvenient for some users.

Q: What are the advantages of Whatsapp cross app chatting?

A: No more switching between apps to reach everyone.

Connect with friends on different platforms without waiting for them to switch.
It Could lead to improved features and services across messaging apps.

Q: How long is Interoperability been under work ?

A: According to Brouwer, the company has been working on interoperability for around two years now.

The move comes as WhatsApp parent company Meta has been designated a ‘gatekeeper’ company under the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which requires it to open up its messaging services within six months.

Q: Will Interoperability allow group chats & calls ?

A: Interoperability will allow WhatsApp users to exchange messages, images, videos and files with people on other messaging platforms. Brouwer said it will focus initially on one-on-one messaging rather than group chats or calls.

Users will have to opt in to activate the feature. Importantly, WhatsApp will keep messages from other apps separate – they will appear in a ‘third party chats’ section rather than the main inbox. This is to maintain WhatsApp’s high privacy standards.

Q: Will iMessage open to interoperability?

A: Apple’s iMessage may also have to offer interoperability under the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
Apple has not commented on its plans.

In the US, it faces separate scrutiny about keeping iMessage as a closed platform. Opening it up could facilitate communication between iOS and Android users.

Q: Does EU demand interoperability within six months ?

A: Under EU rules, interoperability has to launch within just six months. However, it’s unclear if it will be Europe-only initially.

WhatsApp did not clarify if the feature will be available globally. When enabled, a “third party chats” section will appear for users, as previously spotted in WhatsApp beta versions by WABetaInfo – although this page isn’t directly accessible or functional at the moment.

Q: Which apps will link to whatsapp in interoperability?

A: WhatsApp has not revealed which platforms might link up. Major messaging apps like Telegram, Signal, Snap and Google did not comment on plans to enable WhatsApp interoperability.

Given the technical complexities, it may take time for third parties to launch integrations after WhatsApp publishes its March guidance.

“Starting next week, you’ll be able to access it in more locations in English, and in Japanese and Korean, with more countries and languages coming soon,” added Google.

Q: How is Gemini Advanced a direct challenge to Microsoft Copilot?

A: Gemini Advanced looks like a direct challenge to Microsoft Copilot, said Paul Baier, CEO of analyst firm GAI Insights. But the offering takes the approach of focusing on the user data within Gmail, Google Docs or Slides as opposed to a copilot that is tethered to an application.

“They are rolling more advanced models out for a data-centric copilot view, which is very different from the  Microsoft app-centric view,” Baier said.

While Microsoft’s Copilot flagship is Microsoft 365 Copilot, the vendor started with Copilots for Excel, Word and PowerPoint, which caused some confusion among enterprise customers, he said.

“All of Microsoft products started as an on-premises-based software product and then moved to the cloud,” Baier continued.

Meanwhile, Google started with a cloud-based architecture, which will enable it to have a more integrated experience for generative AI tools, he added.

“Google is saying, ‘Hey, we have all your data. We are going to do a copilot across all your emails, all your slide presentations, all your Google docs,'” Baier said.

“They’re going to be data-centric and they’re going to be more powerful over time for individual productivity.”

For enterprises that use Google Cloud or Workspace, the addition of Gemini will enable easy access to data from spreadsheets, email, and Word documents, he continued.
Despite the apparent similarities, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini Advanced are different, said Futurum Group analyst Mark Beccue.

“Where Copilot is different is [Microsoft] is incorporating it into other things that they do that Google necessarily doesn’t do,” Beccue said. An example is Windows OS, he said.

Q: What is Google One AI Premium Plan ?

A: Google has announced the launch of Gemini Advanced alongside a new premium subscription plan called Google One AI Premium.

This new plan is priced at $19.99 per month and includes all the existing Google One Premium subscription features, like 2TB of cloud storage and access to Google’s latest AI advancements.

With the new plan, subscribers will soon be able to use Gemini technology within Google’s productivity tools, including Gmail, Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets.

A: Google has started development on its second-generation foldable phone, aka Pixel Fold 2, and the first purported images of the Pixel Fold 2 have appeared on the internet, revealing a major redesign.

An unnamed person, who also shared the hardware details of the upcoming Google foldable phone, has now shared an image of the first prototype with the Android Authority, revealing the phone’s design and there are some major changes compared to the first-gen Pixel Fold.

The source said that Google’s upcoming foldable phone has a narrower cover screen and an inner screen that is closer to a square aspect ratio.

The device’s overall form factor might be similar to the OnePlus Open, which has screens that are between the Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 in size.
