Instagram Enhances User Control with New 'Limits,' 'Restrict,' and 'Notes' Feature

Highlights

  • Expanded “Limits” feature to mute messages from everyone except close friends.
  • Enhanced “Restrict” function to block tagging, mentioning, and suppress comments from restricted accounts.
  • New prompts and interaction options in the “Notes” feature for engaging conversations.
  • Improved safety measures to protect users from harassment and unwanted interactions.

Instagram has announced a series of updates aimed at giving users more control over their interactions and facilitating increased conversation among friends on the platform.

The changes span Instagram’s limits, Resrtict, and Notes features.

One of the larger changes involves an extension to the “limits” function that Instagram had created for authors to be able to hide comments and DMs from recent followers or non-followers in the case of harassment campaigns.

Limits now silence incoming messages from all but the people on the user’s close friends list.

This restriction can be set by anyone who receives any type of unwanted message, remark, or abuse, just to reduce incoming noise without disappearing totally from their community.

When set to everyone except close friends, users will see only those accounts on the list they have carefully chosen as close friends.

Other accounts can still interact with the user’s posts, but that activity will be muted.

Limits can be enabled for up to four weeks at a time and extended further as needed.

Strengthening the “Restrict” Function

In addition to the constraints, Instagram has improved its “restrict” tool to prohibit the accounts of those who have been restricted from tagging or mentioning users and has suppressed their comments.

These additional controls provide consumers more options for managing unwanted encounters.

The changes come as Instagram is under growing scrutiny over the safety of its practices—especially those related to keeping younger users out of harassment, hate speech, and other risky content.

Previously just a space for brief status updates, Notes now includes prompts that allow users to post questions, polls, or open-ended statements to spark discussion among friends and mutual followers.

Users can post thought-provoking prompts on anything from weekend getaway recommendations to new movie debates.

Following this conversational trend, Notes now allows users to double-tap to ‘like’ each other’s notes, which instantly recognizes the opinions of friends.

The @ mention feature furthers interactivity by letting one loop chosen friends directly into the note’s conversation.

Instagram Notes upgrades give a new twist to traditional image or video-based communication mixed with text-based discourse.

From a secondary feature to a vibrant platform, Notes have morphed into dynamic, two-way discussions accompanying photo and video sharing.

While Instagram provides users with more management options, the platform extends the functionalities of interactive discussions, so it remains to be seen how well the new tools will be used by the app’s global users.

Notes first launched nearly 18 months ago, with the following intro by Instagram: We’re beginning to roll out Notes, a new way to share your thoughts and see what your friends are up to. Notes are short posts of up to 60 characters using just text and emojis.

During testing, we learned that people liked having a lightweight, easy way to share what’s on their mind and start conversations. From asking for recommendations to sharing what they’re up to, Notes give people a casual and spontaneous way to express themselves and connect with each other.

What are the latest moves to address mental health concerns ?

The company has been facing growing concern over the impact of Instagram on the mental health of teenage users, with particular concerns about online bullying.

Meta has introduced a number of protective features specifically for teens, two of them introduced earlier this year.

In January, Meta started blocking DMs to teenagers from adults they don’t follow. Parents and guardians also got more powerful parental controls at the same time.

Last month, Meta began blurring nude photos in Instagram DMs – a move aimed at addressing the growing problem of ‘sextortion’ on the platform.

What is the new Close Friends options for teens ?

TechCrunch reports that teenagers are now being offered additional options for further limiting interactions.

The feature has now been tuned for teens with the “Close Friends” setting by default, and Instagram says it is specifically meant to protect people from bullying and harassment.

Accounts that aren’t part of a person’s “Close Friends” group can still interact with them, but their activity won’t show up in the feed.

Teens can limit interactions with recent followers — accounts that started following them in the past week or accounts that they don’t follow.

In addition, the company is adding new functionality to its “Restrict” feature that lets you limit interactions from specific accounts without blocking them.

Instagram will hide all comments from restricted accounts, and they won’t be able to tag or mention you.

Motorola is now entering the competitive 20k area with the launch of the Moto Edge 50 Fusion, having previously targeted the 30k market.

Priced at Rs 20,999, the Moto Edge 50 Fusion has the quality feel of the Moto Edge 50 Pro, which I previously reviewed.

This latest model is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 engine, has a 6.7-inch display with a spectacular 144Hz refresh rate, and comes with a large 5,000mAh battery, all encased in a sleek and lightweight design.

For those looking for a quality experience without the premium price, Motorola’s Edge 50 Fusion is an appealing alternative.

Starting at Rs 20,999, this phone claims to give exceptional value with standout features.

But does the Moto Edge 50 Fusion live up to these expectations?

Can it capture the essence and performance of the Edge 50 Pro at a more accessible price?

Let’s dive into my detailed review to find out.

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Unboxing Experience

Moto Edge 50 Fusion Review:
Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Unboxing Experience

Unboxing the Moto Edge 50 Fusion is a pleasant experience.

The eco-friendly and plastic-free, minimalist packaging immediately sets a premium tone.

Inside, you find the phone snugly placed, accompanied by a Type-C to Type-C cable, a 68W TurboPower charger, and a clear protective case.

Motorola also includes some paperwork, including a quick start guide and warranty information.

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Design and Display

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Display

The Moto Edge 50 Fusion is immediately a looker thanks to its sleek design, almost a dead ringer for the Moto Edge 40 and 50 Pro.

This phone is going to pop out of its class, thanks to its lightweight build, with only 175 grams and 7.8mm in thickness, making it one of the thinnest and lightest phones available.

Of course, it is available in Marshmallow Blue, Forest Blue, and Hot Pink with vegan leather on the back, making it more stylish, and it leaves no smudges at all—something I was very grateful for.

Ergonomic design makes the phone easy to use.

The right-hand side is home to the power button and volume rockers.

On the bottom, you will find the USB Type-C port, the SIM card slot, and the speaker grille, while at the top, there is the secondary mic and Dolby Atmos branding.

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Design
Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Design

It comes with a 6.7-inch FHD+ 10-bit P-OLED Curved Endless Edge screen, featuring a crisp display of 2400 x 1080 pixels and an ultra-smooth 144Hz refresh rate.

It’s a 10-bit color depth panel with 100% DCI-P3 wide color gamut that peaks at 1600 nits brightness and maintains 1200 nits in high brightness mode.

Additionally, it features a 360Hz touch sampling rate, Aqua Touch for operation under water, and 720Hz PWM dimming.

However, the curved display makes for great immersion but sometimes allows for unwelcome reflections and accidental touches that detract from the viewing experience.

Further, the vegan leather back may not be up to everyone’s taste and could wear out over time.

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Cameras

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Cameras
Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Cameras

The Edge 50 Fusion sports a 50MP Sony Lytia 700C primary camera that features an f/1.8 aperture and 1.0µm pixel size.

This is further bumped up to 2.0µm with Ultra Pixel Technology for better low-light performance.

OIS ensures blur-free photos and videos.

The secondary 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture offers a 120-degree field of view for that added versatility.

The 32MP selfie camera comes with an f/2.4 aperture and 0.7µm pixel size, increasing to 1.4µm when using Quad Pixel technology.

Dual-pixel PDAF is present for fast and accurate focus locking.

The main camera takes bright, detailed photos, particularly in Ultra-res mode. Portrait mode is really good at edge detection, though the boosted colors will not be to everyone’s taste.

The 13MP ultrawide lens takes great wide-angle shots, and the front-facing 32MP camera does a good job of selfies, with accurate skin tone and good detail.

But the selfie camera has a bug.

It always fails to capture portrait pictures in landscape orientation—either it won’t apply the bokeh effect or crash the app.

Hopefully, it will be fixed with some software update.

One of the highlights is low-light photography.

The Edge 50 Fusion pulls its weight quite adequately during the night shots.

The Night Vision mode brings about an enhancement in detail and reduces banding, something commendable in a midrange device.

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Performance

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Performance
Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Performance

The Moto Edge 50 Fusion features a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset for a performance no different from other mid-rangers.

There are much better offerings in this price segment in terms of raw processing power, however.

On AnTuTu, the Edge 50 Fusion was respectable but not top-tier.

The scores in the Geekbench tests were indicative of mid-range performance at best.

The phone handles multitasking and demanding applications with efficiency, which is all that matters, anyway.

The GPU score of 1795, though decent, suggests that for heavy gaming, some graphical settings may need to be adjusted for optimal performance.

Now, speaking of gaming, the Edge 50 Fusion will do a little just fine with games somewhat demanding, thanks to the Adreno 710 GPU and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 chipset.

However, for the really graphically intensive games, users might have to adjust settings to keep smooth gameplay.

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Software and Features

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Software and Features

The Moto Edge 50 Fusion runs on Hello UI atop Android 14, offering a near-vanilla Android experience.

There are a few pre-installed Moto apps, but mercifully, no third-party bloatware.

The phone supports various Motorola and Lenovo signature gestures and includes ThinkShield security features via the Moto Secure app.

Hunting for one striking feature, the app Ready For lets users either mirror the phone’s display or create a virtual phone screen on a PC.

This feature makes video calls using the camera of the phone, further allowing one to launch apps directly on a Windows PC or laptop for various purposes, including checking messages and receiving calls.

File transfers are easy between the phone and PC with simple swipe or drag-and-drop actions.

Other features include Moto Connect, which offers a DeX-like experience of mirroring the smartphone screen to an external display, and other utilities like Moto Secure and Family Space.

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Battery and Charging

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Battery and Charging

The Moto Edge 50 Fusion comes equipped with a 5,000mAh battery and supports TurboPower 68W fast charging.

In my tests, the phone managed to go from 20% to 100% in 54 minutes with the standard charging mode on.

But there’s also the so-called “Charge Boost” feature in settings, which needs to be switched on manually.

With Charge Boost, the phone was basically replenished from 20% to 100% in just 36 minutes, and that is highly convenient in case one needs a quick top-up.

While the usual charging time of 50-55 minutes from 1% to 100% is decent, the Charge Boost mode greatly reduces that time to 32-35 minutes.

This feature is an actual advantage for those on the move.

Motorola adds a Type-C to Type-C cable and a compatible charger inside the box, a nice gesture.

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Final Verdict

Moto Edge 50 Fusion: Final Verdict

The Moto Edge 50 Fusion offers a sleek design, impressive display, and strong camera performance at an attractive price.

While the processor may not be the best in its segment and there are minor software bugs, the overall package delivers excellent value for money.

The fast charging and clean Android experience make it a compelling choice for those seeking a premium feel without the premium price tag.

iPhone 16 Pro vs iPhone 15 Pro: Should You Upgrade Despite Similar Design?

0

Highlights

  • iPhone 16 Pro features a slightly larger 6.3-inch screen compared to the iPhone 15 Pro’s 6.1 inches.
  • Expected thinner bezels and Border Reduction Structure technology for improved screen real estate.
  • Rumoured larger battery for extended usage without frequent charging.
  • Potential camera upgrades with a 12MP periscope telephoto lens and a 48MP ultra-wide camera.

The iPhone 16 Pro is finally on its way, and with a new iPhone comes only one thing: Apple fan excitement.

But new reports are showing that the iPhone 16 Pro will not look too different from its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro.

Well, here comes a big question: will it be worth upgrading if the design is essentially the same?

No Design Changes for the iPhone 16 Pro?

iPhone 16 Pro features a slightly larger 6.3-inch screen compared to the iPhone 15 Pro's 6.1 inches.
iPhone 16 Pro features a slightly larger 6.3-inch screen compared to the iPhone 15 Pro’s 6.1 inches.

First glance, iPhone 16 Pro is quite similar to iPhone 15 Pro.

The overall appearance remains the same, but digging deeper, it will find a few changes, at least according to sources.

iPhone 16 Pro is quite similar to iPhone 15 Pro
iPhone 16 Pro is quite similar to iPhone 15 Pro

Size is the most prominent difference: the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to come in a marginally larger variant with a 6.3-inch screen compared to 6.1 inches on the iPhone 15 Pro.

For those who prefer larger phones, this might be the best reason to upgrade.

Most probably thinner bezels

South Korean carriers neither confirm nor deny early iPhone 16 release
iPhone 16 Pro might finally have thinner bezels

Another speculated update is that the iPhone 16 Pro might finally have thinner bezels, which will be provided via the use of Border Reduction Structure technology.

That means even more screen real estate, which could mean an improved viewing experience, enjoyable video streaming, and the ability to fit more content when browsing social media.

Improved Battery

Leaked iPhone 16 Pro Battery Specs Suggest Notable Enhancements
iPhone 16 Pro is also rumoured to include a larger battery

While not as flashy as a new camera or a larger screen, the iPhone 16 Pro is also rumoured to include a larger battery.

This is not as revolutionary as it sounds, but with this improvement, users, to whom battery life matters a lot, might just change their minds.

Imagine bingeing more YouTube videos or going through the Internet for longer than you usually do without reaching for the charger.

The further integration of Apple’s AI ability will be another exciting feature of the iPhone 16 Pro.

Though it is scanty on details, experts believe Apple’s AI capability could propel the iPhone 16 series to a “supercycle” in sales.

Enhancements to Siri, faster picture and video processing, and more intelligent automation of common chores are all possible.

Of course, one of the hottest topics for each iPhone release is its camera.

In the iPhone 16 Pro, two more cameras are going to be added: a 12MP periscope telephoto lens featuring a 5x optical zoom and a 48MP ultra-wide camera.

If this is accurate, then the iPhone 16 Pro will be absolutely different from the iPhone 15 Pro, possibly in ultra-wide shots and zoom quality.

Some New Additional Buttons

The rumoured “Capture” button, thought to be more of a standard shutter button

In addition, the rumoured “Capture” button, thought to be more of a standard shutter button with touch sensitivity, could allow users more flexibility with their shots and might accommodate changes in zoom on the fly.

At first look, the iPhone 16 Pro might not differ much from the iPhone 15 Pro; however, the upgrades it is rumoured to bring along might make this device an attractive choice for many users.

iPhone 16 Pro might not differ much from the iPhone 15 Pro

The phone will focus on a slightly larger screen size, longer battery life, likely Apple AI advancements, and notable camera upgrades.

And let’s not forget about the faster chip, which is a given, and any other improvements that leakers haven’t uncovered yet.

So, while the design might not be a major selling point, the overall package could be enough to convince Apple fans to upgrade, even if the iPhone 16 Pro ends up looking like its predecessor.

Highlights

  • Thunderbolt 5 doubles data transfer rates to 80Gbps, offering faster performance for intensive tasks.
  • Supports dynamic bandwidth allotment, achieving up to 120Gbps in one direction for ultra-high-resolution displays.
  • Enhanced power delivery for faster charging of laptops and devices through a single cable.
  • Backward compatibility with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 ensures seamless integration with existing hardware.

For years, Intel’s Thunderbolt has been setting the pace when it comes to high-speed connection, seamlessly integrating data transfer, video output, and power supply into a single cable.

Now, the tech behemoth is planning to take the bar up a notch in its latest release: Thunderbolt 5—a genuinely game-changing experience for consumers across a variety of sectors.

The Need for Thunderbolt 5

Thunderbolt 5: Intel's Next-Gen Connectivity Marvel Explained
Thunderbolt 5: Intel’s Next-Gen Connectivity Marvel Explained

The new Thunderbolt 5 pushes up data transfer rates, increasing to an astonishing 80Gbps—twice the capacity of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 4.

That means that tasks requiring the most data-intensive work, like high-resolution video editing, large file transfers, or advanced gaming setups, can be done smoothly and much faster.

But that’s not all; Thunderbolt 5 goes further to allow dynamic bandwidth allotment.

In a standard configuration, it utilizes four data lanes, each supporting an amazing 40Gbps, allowing for bi-directional 80Gbps rates.

However, for applications that need even more bandwidth—think ultra-high-resolution screens—the lanes may be switched on the fly, dedicating three lanes to data transfer in one direction for a whopping 120Gbps!

Key Benefits of Thunderbolt 5

Thunderbolt 5 also promises visually amazing experiences since a higher bandwidth can connect many 8K displays or high-refresh-rate monitors.

So, all creative pros and gamers can expect the most excellent video performance for escalating their work and game amusements.

Highlights

  • India prepares to introduce the Digital Competition Bill modelled on Europe’s DMA.
  • The bill aims to prohibit exploitation of non-public user data and mandate third-party app stores.
  • Apple may face fines up to 10% of global revenue for violations.
  • US lobby group urges Indian government to reconsider the bill’s regulations.

Apple’s ongoing battle against antitrust regulations is about to face a new challenge, this time in India.

The South Asian nation is preparing its own competition law, closely modelled on Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).

According to reports, this new legislation, dubbed the “Digital Competition Bill,” aims to prohibit companies from exploiting non-public user data and promoting their own services over rivals.

It also seeks to abolish restrictions on downloading third-party apps.

Apple Preparing for a Court Showdown

Apple Braces for Another Antitrust Showdown, This Time in India

The move comes as no surprise, as India feels some tech behemoths wield “immense control” over the sector, such that government intervention is indeed due.

It’s understood the proposed law would contain requirements similar to the DMA—mandating Apple to allow for third-party App Stores and giving iPhone consumers an active choice of web browser.

In Europe, the DMA slammed various changes on corporations accused of abuse of market dominance.

Apple Inc. is one of the corporations, which the verdict declared the monopoly on the selling of iPhone apps illegal.

The firm was to permit third-party application stores to distribute iPhone applications, but their implementation has been termed as “malicious compliance,” and it is under probe for possible violation

Not Apple’s First Antitrust Rodeo

India prepares to introduce the Digital Competition Bill modelled on Europe’s DMA

Similar legislation is being faced by Apple in many different countries, the latest being Japan with its own DMA.

The tech giant is also battling a lawsuit with the US Department of Justice, covering much the same ground—as well as facing a judge who seems highly unimpressed with the company’s response to her ruling in the Epic Games case.

As India readies to unveil its Digital Competition Bill, a US lobby group representing tech giants, including Google, Amazon, and Apple, has asked the Indian government to rethink the law.

The group says the regulations against data use and preferential treatment of partners could raise user costs, according to the letter.

But the Indian government will not budge in its view that the law is needed to clip the wings of a few massive tech companies.

Like the DMA, the Digital Competition Bill will have provisions to fine Apple up to 10% of its global revenue in case of any violation of the law.

The Indian government will study replies from Apple and others to see whether any changes are required before the law is submitted to parliament for approval.

FAQs

What is the Digital Competition Bill in India?

The Digital Competition Bill is a proposed legislation in India modelled on Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), aiming to regulate tech giants’ use of non-public user data and promote fair competition.

How will the Digital Competition Bill impact Apple?

The bill could require Apple to allow third-party app stores and provide consumers with choices of web browsers, similar to the DMA in Europe. Violations could result in fines up to 10% of Apple’s global revenue.

Why is India introducing the Digital Competition Bill?

India believes that tech giants like Apple wield immense control over the market, necessitating government intervention to ensure fair competition and prevent abuse of market dominance.

What other countries are implementing similar legislation?

Apple is facing similar antitrust regulations in countries like Japan, the United States, and Europe, all aiming to promote fair competition and prevent monopolistic practices.

How is the US lobby group responding to India’s proposed bill?

A US lobby group representing tech giants, including Apple, has asked the Indian government to reconsider the bill, arguing that regulations against data use and preferential treatment could raise user costs.

What does antitrust mean?

In many jurisdictions around the world, it is illegal for large companies to get together to form agreements or “trusts” to behave in a particular way .

Laws designed to outlaw this type of behavior are called antitrust legislation.

The term is used more generally to refer to laws designed to prevent companies from engaging in any kind of anti-competitive action – that is, do anything that would tend to artificially distort competition within a market.

One common myth is that antitrust laws only apply to monopolies.

This is not the case: They apply to any company large enough to have a dominant position in any market.

The definition of the word “market” can be crucial to deciding whether antitrust concerns arise.

Why is Apple facing antitrust investigations?

Apple is a very large company, and it’s nit tough for a company of that size to commit antitrust violations, so it is not surprising that any massive corporation would be put under the antitrust microscope.

For apple there are many other concerns based on the company”s market dominance in particular areas.

What are the antitrust concerns with Apple?

There are problems in areas as diverse as ad tracking and Sign In With Apple, but there are three major ones.
-The App Store

Apple says it does not have a dominant position in this market, as it considers the relevant market to be either “smartphones” or “apps.”

The company holds a minority share of the smartphone market in most of the countries in which it operates, it believes it cannot be considered to have a dominant position.

Competition regulators tend to take the view that the relevant market is “iOS apps,” and here Apple has a 100% monopoly on their sale and distribution.

Edge cases aside, there is no way for a developer to bring an iOS app to market without selling it through the App Store.

Companies like Epic Games argue that they should be allowed to sell in-app purchases without Apple taking a cut of their revenue.

The argument here is that Apple harms developers by taking part of their income, and consumers by forcing developers to charge more to make up for Apple’s cut.

Apple, in response, says that it is perfectly normal for a company to take a cut of the sales it facilitates.

Default apps

Some companies blame Apple of anti-competitive behavior by giving its own apps advantages over third-party ones.

One way that Apple does this, they say, is by pre-installing its own apps.

There is overlap here with the App Store concerns.

Relationships with carriers and retailers

Apple has also been found guilty in more than one country of exploiting a dominant position within the smartphone market to place undue demands on carriers and retailers.

Because the popularity of iPhones meant carriers had to sell them, Apple was able to dictate terms.

In South Korea, for example, it was accused of imposing three onerous conditions on local carriers:

Carriers had to buy minimum quantities of each model, dictated by Apple
Carriers had to share the cost of warranty repairs or replacements
Carriers had to pay to run Apple’s own TV ads for the iPhone

Budget-focused carriers might, for example, want to buy only older and cheaper models, as that’s what their customers want, but Apple would force them to buy flagship models, too.
And if a phone proved faulty, Apple wouldn’t just replace it, but would oblige carriers to meet some of the costs.

Finally, although carriers had to pay the full cost of running iPhone ads on TV, they were only allowed to use Apple’s own ads, and the only thing they were permitted to change was adding their own logo to the final frame.

Additional areas of concern range from Apple Pay to a 4K video codec alliance!

What could happen to Apple as a result?

Antitrust outcomes will usually happen on a country-by-country basis, though there are exceptions.

A more likely scenario is a series of smaller changes.

How is Apple responding?

In public, Apple’s stance is an outraged one, arguing that it does not have a dominant position and is doing nothing wrong.

Behind closed doors, the company is aware that it either has to change some of its practices, or be forced to do so by law.

The company has also quietly made a number of other changes in direct response to antitrust concerns, for example, opening up the Find My app to third-party accessories, and allowing people to change their default email app and web browser.
