WhatsApp is improving how users discover new channels to follow.
The app will include categories in the channels directory so users can explore content that interests them.
As per WABetaInfo, the new WhatsApp beta for Android uncovered that the company is currently testing a new channels section.
Right now, plans are in the works to include seven categories: Business, Entertainment, Lifestyle, News and Information, Organizations, People, and Sports.
Channels will automatically fall under one of these relevant categories according to their content.
The categorization will take place behind the scenes, so there would be no effort required from the side of the channel owner to choose categories.
The new categorized directory aims at enhancing the channel browsing experience for WhatsApp users.
Instead of continuously scrolling through an unsorted list, people can pick a category where their interest lies, for example, entertainment or sports.
This focused view will surface more channels catering to those specific interests.
With automatic categorization, users are able to find relevant new channels much faster, without too much searching.
Added structure and filtering should reduce aimless browsing through unrelated content.
Categorization also encourages users to look beyond just the topics they usually follow.
Clearly divided sections make it easier to sample channels from topics people might not normally think to explore.
This upgrade to the channels directory is still under development, but WhatsApp intends to release it in a future app update.
Users can look forward to a much more streamlined channel discovery process to expand their followed content.
Overall, WhatsApp’s new categorized channels approach should provide a more intuitive and personalized browsing experience compared to the current uncategorized directory.
The new categories in WhatsApp’s channels directory are designed to help users easily discover and follow channels that match their interests, enhancing navigation and reducing time spent searching for relevant content.
Channels on WhatsApp will be automatically sorted into one of seven specific categories based on their content, such as Business or Sports, streamlining the process for both channel owners and users.
No, WhatsApp users will not need to select categories for their channels. The categorization process is handled automatically by WhatsApp, ensuring channels are appropriately classified without extra effort from the owner.
Categorized channels allow users to quickly find content that aligns with their interests, offering a more focused and efficient browsing experience and potentially exposing them to new topics they might not have explored otherwise.
