Leaked Sketches Reveal Distinctive Designs for OnePlus 13 and 13R Models

Highlights

  • OnePlus 13 to feature a centrally placed circular camera visor
  • OnePlus 13R shown with a square camera island on the left
  • Both models expected to have notable visual differences
  • OnePlus 13 rumoured to include a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset

Just a few months after the launch of the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R, we have a clear idea of what their successors may look like, all because of leaked design sketches.

The sketches were shared by a reliable leaker, Yogesh Brar, on the social media platform X.

OnePlus 13 and 13R Design

As per the sketch, the OnePlus 13 is likely to boast a circular camera visor centrally placed on the back panel, breaking away from the current off-center placement on the OnePlus 12.

The move could hint at OnePlus’s attempt to provide cleaner design differentiations between its flagship and the toned-down models

On the OnePlus 13R, the sketch shows that the camera island on the left side of the back panel will retain but in a square shape and not in the circular design seen in the predecessors.

If these sketches turn out to be accurate, it will be much easier to distinguish between the two smartphones at a glance for anyone, even for those unaware of the subtle branding or colour changes.

Although no leaked specifications of the OnePlus 13R have been received, previous leaks suggest that the OnePlus 13 will inherit the same 6.8-inch 2K LTPO display as its predecessor.

There are rumours that the OnePlus 13 might sport a micro quad-curved display, aimed at enhancing ergonomics and giving a better grip.

As expected, the OnePlus 13 is likely to be powered by Qualcomm’s forthcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset; OnePlus has invariably used Qualcomm’s flagship processors in top-of-the-line devices.

The design of the OnePlus 12 and 12R is such that both are very difficult to differentiate from each other at first sight.

The sketches now hint that OnePlus could look to change that with the 13 series by way of rather pronounced visual differences between the two variants.

The 2024 iPad Pro models have achieved an unprecedented level of thinness, even for Apple products.

The 13-inch model measures just 5.1mm thick, excluding the camera bump, making it Apple’s thinnest device ever.

The 11-inch variant is slightly thicker at 5.3mm.

But how durable are these extremely thin and extremely expensive products?

Addressing Durability Concerns

You just know that with such an ultra-thin design, questions about rigidity and durability are inevitable, especially after the controversy surrounding the 2018 iPad Pro models, which were prone to bending.

Apple is getting ahead of the issue. SVP John Ternus, in an interview with YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss, has addressed these concerns, revealing that the new iPads feature a redesigned internal structure to improve stiffness.

Structural Redesign for Rigidity

2024 iPad Pro models achieve record thinness at 5.1mm for the 13-inch model

Per Ternus, the new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models sport a new internal layout.

A metal cover tops the logic board to form a central rib down the middle of the device.

This has “tremendously improved the stiffness of the product,” says Ternus.

The other thing Apple harped on in the keynote was that the iPad Pro was 20% better thermally than previous models.

In addition to the graphite sheets in the main housing, Apple also used copper in the Apple logo to help dissipate heat.

No Compromises, Thanks to Apple Silicon

Apple SVP Greg Jozwiak assured that the new ultra-thin design comes with no compromises, courtesy of the abilities of Apple Silicon and the company’s own hardware engineering prowess.

We shall then have to wait for the teardowns from experts like iFixit, who will unveil the redesigned innards of the 2024 iPad Pro models.

The new iPad Pro models are up for order now, with the first deliveries slated for May 15th.

FAQs

How thin are the new 2024 iPad Pro models compared to previous versions?

The new 13-inch iPad Pro is exceptionally thin at just 5.1mm, excluding the camera bump, making it the thinnest device Apple has ever produced, with the 11-inch variant slightly thicker at 5.3mm.

What has Apple done to address durability concerns with the ultra-thin iPad Pro models?

Apple’s SVP John Ternus explained that the iPad Pro models feature a redesigned internal layout that includes a central metal rib over the logic board, significantly enhancing the stiffness and overall durability of these devices.

Can you describe the thermal improvements in the 2024 iPad Pro models?

The new iPad Pro models are designed to be 20% better in thermal performance compared to their predecessors, incorporating graphite sheets and utilizing the Apple logo made of copper to help dissipate heat more effectively.

What does Apple say about the performance of the new iPad Pro models?

Apple SVP Greg Jozwiak has stated that the new ultra-thin iPad Pro models do not compromise on performance, thanks to the advanced capabilities of Apple Silicon and innovative hardware engineering.

Google Wallet Updates Minimum OS Requirements for Enhanced Security

0

Highlights

  • Google Wallet to require Android 9 or higher and Wear OS 2.x from June 10th
  • Change aims to enhance security due to lack of updates for older Android versions
  • 6% of Android users on outdated versions affected by the update
  • Google Wallet launched in India, offering digital storage for non-financial items

Effective June 10, 2023, Google is increasing the minimum operating system version that must be running on an Android phone or Wear OS smartwatch for a person to use the Google Wallet app.

Again, this is on security grounds.

As per the support documentation for Google, the Google Wallet app will require at least Android 9 on phones and Wear OS 2.x on smartwatches.

As fate would have it, security updates are no longer given to Android versions below 9.

Change aims to enhance security due to lack of updates for older Android versions
Change aims to enhance security due to lack of updates for older Android versions

That will affect the users who are still rocking Android 7.0 Nougat or Android 8.0 Oreo on their gadgets.

While Android 14 is the current version, and Android 15 is expected soon, a sizeable 13.6% of Android users were still on versions 8.x or below as of October 2022.

According to a new support document, “Google Wallet will require Android 9 or higher on your phone and Wear OS 2.x or higher on your smartwatch” on June 10. As for why this version bump is happening, Google Wallet says “security updates aren’t available for Android versions below 9.”

Wear OS Impact

Pixel Watch 2: Operating System
Google Wallet for Wear OS smartwatches will need version 2.x at least

Starting from June, Google Wallet for Wear OS smartwatches will need version 2.x at least, which is originally based on Android 8.0 Oreo.

The changes follow on from news last August that Google had axed Play Services support for Android 4.4 KitKat, instead requiring at least version 5.0 Lollipop.

In related recent news, Google has officially released its Google Wallet app in India, and it’s now available to download in that country from the Play Store.

Google Wallet vs Google Pay

Google Wallet launched in India, offering digital storage for non-financial items
Google Wallet launched in India, offering digital storage for non-financial items

While the names may sound confusing, Google Wallet and Google Pay offer different functionalities in India.

Google Wallet is a digital wallet that securely stores items like boarding passes, loyalty cards, IDs, and tickets—reducing the need to physically carry a card or tickets.

Google Pay in India focuses more on facilitating financial transactions and UPI payments to individuals and businesses.

Despite the similarities in the name, both Google Wallet and Google Pay will coexist in India, serving different functions—non-financial and financial.

FAQs

Why is Google Wallet increasing the minimum OS requirement for its app?

Starting June 10th, 2023, Google Wallet will require Android 9 or higher and Wear OS 2.x to ensure users benefit from the latest security updates, as older versions no longer receive these critical updates.

What will happen to users on older Android versions like 7.0 Nougat or 8.0 Oreo?

Users with devices running Android versions below 9 will no longer be able to use Google Wallet after the new requirements take effect, impacting those who have not upgraded their devices.

How does the OS requirement change affect Wear OS users?

For Wear OS smartwatches, the required version will be 2.x or higher. Watches on versions below will need to be updated to continue using Google Wallet, aligning with the new security standards.

What’s the difference between Google Wallet and Google Pay in India?

In India, Google Wallet is used for storing digital items like tickets and loyalty cards, while Google Pay focuses on financial transactions and UPI payments.
