With the impending release of iOS 17 this September, Apple fans have much to anticipate. The new iteration of the operating system promises a slew of enhancements, with notable improvements to the Messages app and a significant revamp of the autocorrect feature.
Yet, as previewed in the recent WWDC, Apple has indicated that not all of the heralded features will accompany the initial launch, and some will only see the light of day later in the year.
Here are two features that won’t be available with the iOS 17 launch later this month.
One of the standout features is the revamp of AirDrop. The upgraded AirDrop now boasts functionalities like NameDrop – a feature allowing users to exchange numbers seamlessly, and a proximity-triggered sharing option where content can be shared just by bringing two iOS devices close together.
However, the most awaited aspect is the enhancement allowing AirDrop transfers to complete over the internet, a solution for those annoying instances when you move out of AirDrop range midway through a transfer.
Apple assures that the content will be transmitted securely, retaining its quality, via the internet if both parties are logged into their iCloud accounts.
Unfortunately, for those eager to test this feature, it is not part of the current iOS 17 beta and will be rolled out later.
Shifting the spotlight to Apple Music, iOS 17 promises a more communal experience. The much-anticipated feature is the introduction of collaborative playlists.
This addition lets users share a playlist, allowing friends not just to listen but also to contribute, reorganize, delete, and even use emojis to react to the tracks playing.
This feature accentuates Apple Music’s turn towards a more social platform, bringing a collaborative vibe to the listening experience.
But, patience is the game here. The collaborative playlist isn’t part of the inaugural iOS 17 release but is promised to be integrated “later this year.”
While these exciting features are on the horizon, their absence from the initial iOS 17 launch doesn’t spell gloom.
Apple’s release strategies can be fluid, meaning while some features might be introduced sooner, others currently in the iOS 17 beta might see a postponement.
NameDrop in the new AirDrop allows users to seamlessly exchange numbers, enhancing the convenience of device-to-device interactions.
This AirDrop feature lets users initiate content sharing simply by bringing two iOS devices close to each other, without manually selecting the recipient device.
The collaborative playlist feature in Apple Music allows users to invite friends to a shared playlist. Contributors can add, rearrange, or remove songs and use emojis to react to tracks. This brings a more social dimension to Apple Music.
Not all features previewed in the iOS 17 beta might be available at the initial launch. Apple has indicated that certain functionalities, such as the internet completion of AirDrop transfers and collaborative playlists in Apple Music, will be released “later this year”.
